On a Saturday mid morning there will be a bit of a wait for a table ~30 minutes. No problem, enough time to window shop a few of the stores on Southport. We decided to stop in before leaving Southport as it's typically packed. We went in around 1ish and were able to get a table. Pretty expensive, but really tasty breakfast sandwiches. I didn't think I'd like the regular breakfast sandwich because of the arugula and English muffin, but wow was I proved wrong. The English muffin was big and fluffy and the arugula wasn't overwhelming and was nicely dressed. You could even taste the sage in the sausage! The bodega breakfast sandwich was really good, too, with a big fluffy bun and the very yummy aioli. Side fruit was classic. The potato mash was just mashed potatoes. I went on a Sunday right before Christmas and there was no weight around 10:30. Typically, I hear that weekends are super crowded, but I think because of the holiday a lot of people had left the city. I got the quiche of the day which had mushrooms and artichoke. It was creamy, fluffy and super flavorful. It was served with a decent salad that had too many seeds for my liking. My friend got the hash bowl which I tasted and was very flavorful. We split the bread, pudding, pancakes, and I can see why people rave about these. Having just made bread pudding I can tell you that the consistency is exactly the same. It did not taste like a normal pancake because it was pretty chewy and dense. However, I would definitely come back to get these again or try other brunch items. We went in to grab some lunch and the hostess said there was a 35 minute wait, when we get back we tell her that we want to sit outside, and she replied that the 35 minute wait was for indoor seating only, we could've sat outside the whole time. Then we sit at a table for 10 minutes before we ask a waitress walking by if we can order, and she said she would grab our waitress for us, she came back telling us that she was our waitress and didn't realize it. Gosh, this place is just so expensive. I come here every so often and I always regret it - my last visit was $40 and all I had was a latte and a hash bowl. We've been coming here since the day they opened and sadly the food and service has gone seriously downhill. Today's breakfast was almost inedible: carafe of coffee was acrid, pancakes were close to raw, chorizo and eggs tasted "old" and were flavorless-- even the poblano hot sauce didn't help, side of fruit was $7 with 5 small cubes of fruit which was watery. The only tasty thing was my tea. We were never checked on until the check was delivered. Not recommended anymore and we'll spend our $60 for breakfast for 2 people elsewhere. Starting with the Chopped Salad which was the best plate on the table, followed by the Hash which was a gluten free miracle meal... sooo good! Such a wonderful local gem! Everything here is delicious. I don't think they take reservations, but you can drop in, put your name on the list, stroll the shops on Southport and they'll text you when your table is ready. Came on to this wonderful little gem because the bagel place was closed. I love the bagel shop next door to the Music Box only they are closed on Tuesdays. I've been to this place a few times and the food is solid. I have tried the bread pudding pancakes (best thing I've had), the breakfast sandwich (I've had better), the mash potatoes, the hash, and the grilled coffee cake. The coffee cake is HUGE. It's literally a small cake, but it was absolutely delicious. They also make a great grilled cheese. The service is friendly and the ambiance is nice. The grocery items in there are top notch, as well. There are a few things that I'm not crazy about, though. The tables are a little too thin. The coffee comes in a small pot and the cream comes in a small saucer. In my opinion they take up too much room and it can get a little messy from the constant pouring. You also have to request salt and pepper. The one bathroom they have could be a little cleaner too. But overall I really like this place and will most likely be back at some point. read more

Southport Grocery & Cafe is a neighborhood joint we've been to quite a bit over the years, but it seems even more recently that it's been blowing up (especially on the weekends) so it's been probably a year or so since we've made a visit. We came on a Sunday around 11:30 and had about a half hour wait. There are so many stores to wander around in the neighborhood, it honestly flew by. Y'all! Be sure to check-in on Yelp when you're here to redeem a special treat (ok, it's a cupcake!). As if their brunch couldn't get any better, throw a cupcake in the mix and I'm a customer for life. One of my favorite parts of Southport Grocer is the creative sweet menu items. Grown up pop tarts, bread pudding pancakes, cupcake pancakes!?! Also a fan of the grilled coffee cake. On this visit we went with the bread pudding pancakes and wow. The batter is made from bread pudding so they are extra gooey, and then topped with cinnamon sugar butter and vanilla anglaise. I went with the breakfast sandwich for my meal and dang, it's delicious. To top it off, the service is always great. Very attentive and a staff that seems happy to be there. You can go for a dining experience with a cafe menu, you can pick up pastries (cupcakes, brownies, cookies, etc) and coffee or you can purchase some of their grocery items (jams, soup mixes, dips, hot sauces, pancake mix, seasonings, pickled tomatoes, etc). Better yet, you can do all three! I highly recommend looking through their grocery section because you will find some great items for your pantry. My friend purchased this chili jam and some pickled items. I was impressed with he amount of grocery items they had for sale and then they also had a nice counter with pastry items and their coffee bar was impressive. I could see myself visiting this place to put together a fun gift basket for a foodie friend!
