I have been going to SW Care for over twenty years and have always felt my care and Providers were top-notch. They are responsive, caring, informed and on time (a biggie). Love the Harkle Pharmacy, they always answer the phone and fill prescriptions really fast. I've had four NP's in this time, all outstanding. Don't know where I would go if I didn't have SW Care. Southwest Care is the most incompetent medical facility I've dealt with in NM and that says a lot! One of their doctor's requested a genetic blood test for me, which I had, and also which SWC didn't get prior approval. I received a bill for $850, that eventually went to collections, because SWC wouldn't submit the required paperwork to BlueCross. This went on for nearly a year and the office manager/billing guy, Leo, was completely useless. In fact, at some point I realized he was vindictive and purposefully not submitting the documents. Staff in the office warned me about him and said he could easily solve my case by sending in a preauthorization form. They said he's mean spirited, vengeful, and inept, and the staff are afraid of him because he has some ownership in the practice?! In the end I was able to get BC to pay for the test but the extended hassles I went through, unprofessional behavior, vindictiveness, and incompetence of this organization should not be tolerated by their board. read more

I love Southwest care.. I have always gotten good care there, communication is good and has gotten even better.

The quality of care at Southwest care is desperately low. responsiveness in communication is low and expertise is lacking, bedside manner is practically non existent as the clinicians walk around like zombies, the receptionist is nice and some nursing staff are excellent and far more skilled than the doctors. If your new to the area and trying to establish care, especially with chronic conditions do yourself a favor and find a hospital practice to take you on and don't waste your time at this place. Southwest Care - Nearly killed me with their complete and utter incompetence and lack of responsiveness. Specifically ignored 7 attempts in writing, phone messages, and one visit in person to get a referral to higher care. I lost 43 days at work, I nearly died, I am still on oxygen waiting for a referral for pulmonary evaluation and rehab. The real kicker for me was the nurse telling me not to overload Dr. Faynessa Hernandez with too many things or she will deliberately ignore them because she/southwest care is fucking incompetent. (that last bit is my assertion, not nurse Brian's.) Although I did overhear nurse Brian say, She (me) already thinks we (Southwest Care,) is inept. No, you are not just inept, you're incompetent, and dangerous. Still waiting a month for blood test results... FFS Let's hope this atypical pneumonia isn't chronic and let's hope they don't diagnose another pneumonia as an upper Respatory infection or worse ignore a patient's request for a referral for a week. read more

Ive been coming to SWCC for 16 years now. I TRAVEL 3 HRS to get to SWCC !!! I had full blown aids when I got there ! Today I live as if I've never been sick !!! If all you need for your ongoing medical care is a place to go for a routine wellness checkup, blood/lab work or to get a routine prescription filled then you'll most likely be okay and have few, if any problems using SW Care for your primary care. If you have ongoing chronic health issues my advice would be to get your medical care somewhere else. I've been through several doctors (MD) and several Nurse Practitioners in almost 5 years here because the employees keep resigning (they quit and more on to other venues. Needless to say, the continuity I receive here relative to my medical records and medical needs is lacking in professionalism. Must be nice to have a job where you are not qualified, don't do the service you're hired to do, and still get paid. I have been to 2 of these locations and both the service and skill is horrible .If your in luck and the dr is there for more than a year you are lucky. Then wait time is any where from 30 min to and hour and a half . The amount of paper work required to even see a dr is inconceivable , when all the info in your chart is the same they still want an up date . I clearly said to them in their face THAT THEY NEVER LOOK AT THE INFO , they assured me they do . I said ok lets see , I put that I was transgendered diabetic and pregnant , 3 of the largest red flags there are in medicine NO ONE EVEN SAID A WORD ABOUT IT EVEN AFTER MULTIPLE VISITS . I have been going to Southwest Care Center since 2012, and I am SO happy to have found this practice. Over the years, the doctors I have seen have totally changed my life for the better. My doctors have been so up to date on the latest medical research, are bright, and caring people. I don't want to know where I'd be without Southwest Care Center. Honestly, I'm shocked they have such a low rating here! The pharmacy is so awesome, too. When I call with a question, they always answer the phone right away, and I rarely have to wait on hold. With other pharmacies, such as CVS, that is impossible! Perry is very kind and goes out of his way to make sure your problem is solved! Most other pharmacies make YOU do the leg work. Arrived 4 minutes late to wait in line for 15 minutes while the receptionist chatted with a customer and by the time they were done they said we were too late for our appointment. And the doctor wasn't even there because he took the day off. It's like they go out of the way to find the meanest snobbiest receptionists on the planet. Do not go to the galisteo location unless you are looking for abuse. This place is atrocious - let me count the ways! 1. I had an appt for a Covid vaccine. I had received 4 e-mails and 4 text messages reminding me of my appt. at 12 noon. As I was driving to the appt I received a phone call stating that my vaccine appt was at 1:35. I drove on anyway. 2. When I arrived at 11:45 (as my text messages told me to arrive 15 minutes early) the folks at SW said that they wouldn't open until noon. 3. The receptionist was very rude and couldn't find my appt - even though I had registered at the NM-DOH and at SW Care and they had been sending me reminder messages for 3 days. 4. Even though I had filled out the medical questionnaire on line they had me fill out the exact same form by hand again. 5. Worst of all - they were NOT practicing social distancing. People were passing in the hallway in close proximity. The waiting room (for the 15 minutes after the shot) was packed with people spaced less than 2 feet apart. I have been a patient established with the Southwest Care Center for approximately a year and a half. I am temporarily in Texas taking care of my veterinarian husband who has stage 4 prostate cancer. Ten hours away. And 9 months away taking care of him for me. My omnipod pump no longer works and was replaced with a new pump. Due to extreme stress my blood sugar is averaging 322. I can not turn on my old pump to get the input for the new pump. I called and they told me to basically F off. And of course given that I am very frustrated in my plight, I asked them if they were saying exactly that. I own a home and am a resident of New Mexico. I would say that there are few there with critical thinking on how to help a person in an alarming situation to just help with inputing data into a pump goes way below their compassion level. By the way , you must coordinate setting up appointments. You can't just make them for me and expect me to attend them. If I haven't made them myself sometimes I don't even know about them because I am super busy caring for my husband. I take my husband to 12 appointments per month. They told me that I would have to come in for a personal appointment. I am 10 hours away. Even MD Anderson does telemedicine 4 hours away for my husband. Given that I am a retired department head from two university medical centers, I cannot recommend Southwest Care for diabetics. They do not have the compassion. read more

I was excited to finally have a primary care doctor, turns out the person they gave me was a physicians assistant, not a doctor, and was incredibly unhelpful with my health concerns. Needs serious work on her bedside manner. All she could tell me what to see her supervising physician, who is who i should have been seeing in the first place. waste of time. They are also super disorganized. every time i return a phone call to answer a question I was called to answer i get referred to someone who has no idea what i am calling about, even though i am returning their call. every simple little thing i have tried to work out with them takes forever because of this. Southwest Care on Harkle RD in Santa Fe has completely changed, The best of the best Doctors are No longer There. The Doctor I have been transferred to is really rude. I recently moved to a new city that also has the southwest care I was not ready to make the switch yet . It is a little confusing to me as well when you go to see a dr. and they have to use google to figure things out. Doctors did not have google back in the day.. It is also obvious it is hard for them to keep staff on board. I receive letters a lot saying another staff member will be leaving there company. My Best Doc ever Dr. Adams also left. Long story short I had my first Appt. at the Albuquerque Facility with Doctor Rothman she spent about close to 3 hour with me and explained to me her Motto and answered all questions in complete Detail. She seems to be very sweet and dedicated to her Job I really hope she remains employed for a very long time. read more

I am so disappointed in my visit. I have been going to southwest care since it was Women's Health Services, for my yearly preventative exam. I had exceptional care and caring, including saving my life from my second bout of breast cancer 10 years ago, until my Dr retired. I was then seen by another DR who was not on my wave length. The following year I tried a new Dr and he was FANTASTIC. When I made an appointment with that Dr the next year, my appointment was canceled and changed twice and then I was told the DR had moved to ABQ. I was willing to drive to ABQ but he was no longer doing family medicine and has subsequently left the practice. So this year I called to make my preventative appointment before the end of the year, so that I will not get charged an extra several hundred dollars for my insurance. This appointment, made months ahead, yet again was canceled and rescheduled. Then when I arrived today, not only did I not receive my covered annual exam and was charged a co-pay. When I didn't fill out the forms on their tablet (information which should have been in my file as I have been a patient for almost 2 decades) fast enough I was made to feel as if I was incompetent and inconveniencing everyone. I talked my new DR for an hour, while he took my history, but after 15 years I would have assumed they would have known my history. Then apparently my time was up and the DR disappeared to fill out some forms. Not only did I not get to actually discuss my worries and issues, I didn't receive any exam. I didn't get a refill on my yearly prescription and I had to make another appointment which of course they could not make by the end of the year. I left in tears feeling unheard, dismissed and worried about the cost to my insurance payments. NO ONE seemed to care who I was, the fact that I have been deeply depressed both from the anniversary of my brother's death and my own health, anxiety and stress (there is no routine exam for a 2x cancer survivor who watched her mother in her 50's, die of the disease) was blown by and barely if at all acknowledged. It was like going to a Stepford doctor. Sadly I'm not sure there are any caring doctors left who are taking new patient so i feel rather hopeless of ever being heard and cared for again. read more

I have been with Southwest Care for over 5 years and the changes I've seen are unacceptable. They are no longer your local doctors office. You are now basically a number. It takes over a month to get an appointment, God forbid your not feeling well. You follow their "rule" to allow them 72 hours for a prescription yet you end up calling on the third day and your out if your medication and they can't fill it til the next day. Medication I can't skip!!! The hold time when calling is sometimes over 15 minutes. Either they have become too big of a practice to be of any help or poor management. Not Sure!? read more

Insurance money hungry. All I wanted was a blood test. I saw a doctor when the issue I had first showed up. He said I didn't need a blood test. When the symptoms persisted longer than the doctor said they would, they demanded I be seen again before getting a referral to get the blood test. The kicker: no one could see me for 2 weeks. I was told to go to urgent care (and wait in that line) I don't see the harm in getting a blood test, EVER. My guess--Southwest "Care" center just cares about your insurance money. read more

I got a new patient appointment within a reasonable amount of time to see the doctor I asked for with no problem. Everyone from the front desk to the doctor is polite, helpful and my doctor and his team listened to what I was telling them about my chronic illness. A 2.5 rating would be too high. I was 5 minutes late, they chided me and said it was 20. They triggered my PTSD. They refused to provide care, even though I've been waiting to have a headache of four months duration treated, and they already re-scheduled this "Urgent" appointment. Apparently your insurance carrier getting involved to get help for four months of severe pain, isn't particularly urgent, in this state. I don't believe any of the people in this practice actually even care to practice medicine. They cannot take a history without rudely interrupting and then it isn't an adequate history on which to make any medical decisions. So, in medicine, we take an oath to do no harm. This place is harmful enough that they should not be in business. Take heed before risking your health with them. read more

2 weeks ago, my husband was seen by the PA Emily Talley in order to undergo some tests for some obvious venous insufficiency due to the eruption of ulcers on his left foot. During that visit, she ordered an excessive number of tests as well as issued referrals before seeing the results of the tests. Furthermore, she was insistent he begin taking blood pressure meds due to an elevated BP and became annoyed when he refused. She went on to frighten him by expressing concern for bone cancer and the potential for stroke. I was not with him at the time and needless to say, when he left, his blood pressure was even higher because he tried to let her know that he was knowledgeable and already doing a lot of natural things to help things along. She wasn't interested in anything he was doing, focused on what she thought was best and sent him on his way. He went through all the tests she requested, was told by the reviewing vascular surgeon that the ultrasound images showed minor valve damage; yet, there was no need for surgery. Upon his return for a follow up with Ms. Talley, his blood pressure was up, he was feeling bloated & retaining water which was reflected in his weight & when she entered the room, (I was there), she jumped right back into blood pressure meds. We also discussed the slight elevation in his microalbumin levels to which I pointed out that my husband has been taking huge doses of ibuprofen for well over a year. I've told him to stop as my background does include pharmacology and I happen to be the person treating his current condition, naturally. Nevertheless, she stated (out loud), 'No ... microalbumin is a sign the body is not breaking down protein.' My husband asked why his kidneys are working otherwise. She was happy to explain and continued to tell me 'no, it's not the ibuprofen. In fact, I don't care what's causing it, I just care about what's happening and the microalbumin is high which is more than likely due to the high blood pressure.' and went on to push a prescription. When he refused, she wanted to know why we were even there, essentially leaving us to feel like we were wasting her time. I get it; yet, that's not the case. As a holistic clinician, I can't order tests and we needed to confirm what was going on. She said she understood and then asked about the vascular surgeon. We told her what the reviewing surgeon said and she became annoyed, calling the surgeon she wanted my husband to see. The bottom line is Emily Talley wasn't interested in our feedback or concerns i.e. with the ibuprofen. She even went so far to point out her education and years of prescribing medications. It felt like an ego trip more than a medical visit. What's more, upon looking at the healing ulcers, she handled my husband's foot without gloves while open wounds were present. Not to mention, ibuprofen is known to elevate blood pressure which means the chronic use of ibuprofen will not only raise it, it will lead to elevated microalbumin as well as increase a person's chance of heart attack or stroke ... what's worse, had he agreed to take the blood pressure med, this would have upped his chances even further. I am thoroughly disgusted by this inept care especially since my mission(which I pointed out to her) is to improve the way allopathic and holistic modalities collaborate. read more

I have been a patient of SW Care for a few years...and I used to think it was a good clinic ...but in the past year the quality of the clinic has gone way down...I mean *way* down. I have called a number of times for assistance and to leave a message for a call back from my health care provider's assistant and I never get a call back. I had to make an appointment just to speak to her and then she tells me she never got a message to call me. The other very frustrating part about calling there for assistance is that you have to listen to this loooong advertisement and when someone does answer they ask so many personal medical questions that I think violates HIPPA... I don't care to tell someone who answers the phone my entire medical history. I called this morning and when the receptionist ask what the call was about I said it was about a referral...she wanted to know the specifics of the referral and when I told her that I did not care to tell her what the referral was about she got upset and hung up abruptly. We love Dr. Shandler. We had a TERRIBLE experience with Therese Owen, one of the nurses. She was hostile and angry toward my daughter when she was giving immunizations. She grabbed my daughter's arm, and told her to "relax". She told my daughter that she looked like she would faint (This was ridiculous). This made my daughter uncomfortable. Therese went ahead and roughly and impatiently began the shots. My daughter asked for a break between shots, and Ms. Owen flew off like a nurse Ratchet. She told my daughter that she would have to "retain her" in the clinic if she didn't relax. My daughter asked me why such a mean person would be working in a pediatric clinic. I told her that I could not answer this good question. Ms. Owen explained nothing to me or my daughter. She seemed to be pressed for time, and could not care less about being compassionate or sympathetic. She acted punitive, instead of caring. I tried to contact management six times, by phone, website, and e mail. When I call, I get transferred to "Vera's office". I have not heard from any one. I have left messages several times. This clinic has the feel of an unsympathetic bureaucracy. This is not to take anything away from Dr. Shandler, who is an excellent pediatrician, and is a Santa Fe treasure. I do not like leaving (or getting) bad reviews, but it has been weeks since I have tried to talk to someone. If I had the chance to speak with someone, it would have been a better way to communicate... but that does not seem to be a priority of this clinic read more
