First of all, I was skeptical of the reviews. What do you mean it's painless?! It's a f*in bikini wax! And yet, I booked an appt online any way, despite my skepticism. She does have great reviews, some of them have to be real, right? The studio space is beautiful, clean, and bright and airy. Just as you'd expect for an AK spa. Sophia was friendly, welcomed me with a handshake and a bright smile, and best of all, she was a little goofy. We'll skip the majority of the details from here so I'll cut to it - she's AMAZING. As mentioned, it didn't feel great. But you know what? She took her time, kept conversation (gosh that's always awkward, isn't it?!), and it really didn't hurt that bad. She was so patient. In all my 15 years of waxing, from New York, to Paris, to Seattle, to - yes - Brazil, I have never had an eyebrow or bikini wax like the ones Jessica Luk gives over at Spa Sophia. I never knew that the experience of grooming my nether-regions could actually be pleasant, until a few months ago when I went in for a session with Jess. She spoke with me about my skin type, then went through options, and we decided on the chocolate wax - I'll admit, at the time it sounded a little frou-frou, but Jess was so warm, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic about her work and about me that I was convinced to remain open-minded. Boy, am I glad I did! Not only was the procedure relatively painless, due to what I'm inclined to cite as Jess's perfect technique (I'm not a wax-ist or whatever they're called, but I know pain!), but the process flew by! Jess and I chatted our way through about any and everything, and before I knew it I was coiffed. Next, it was on to brows. I barely have any brows at all, with very fine hair and extremely delicate skin, and even at very expensive spas I've previously walked out literally crying over botched waxings. Again, I had no cause for fear with Jess. Honestly, this is the best brow wax I've ever had. Not only did I walk out of the spa with perfectly arched, manicured brows that framed my eyes and have garnered me complements for WEEKS, but for the first time ever I didn't suffer even a moment of that "I just got waxed" look! At the end of my session with Jess, I walked out confident and hair-free to my desired degree - but not before scheduling a follow-up visit. For the first time in my life, I'm committing to regular appointments. I'm sticking with Jess, and HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you give her a shot as well. read more

I had the most incredible shirodhara experience at Spa Sophia with Ayurvedic practitioner Megan Darwin. I've never felt anything like it. I left feeling like I'd had massage, acupuncture, a chiropractic adjustment, done yoga and had a therapy session - never been so relaxed in my entire life! I would give this place 100 stars if I could! I found Spa Sophia about a year ago when I was living in Venice. I was desperately searching for a place to get my eyebrows waxed that I would love as much as my old one in Louisiana. Then I met Amanda!! This is a great spa in that it fuses high end poshness with a down to earth welcoming manner. I am terrible at tweezing eyebrows, but that's an easy fix for Vanessa at Spa Sophia. I've been getting facials from her for a few years and every time after I leave I'm kicking myself for not coming back more frequently. She's so skilled & experienced, and intuitive & knowledgable. She's someone who just knows her shit, and does her craft with integrity. The rest of the staff always feels welcoming, sincere and kind--very un-West LA in that (great) way. A little pricey but always feels worth it. (I mean, if I were going to wear a shirt everyday the way I wear my face everyday, I would surely spend $160+ on it! Way overdue review. Been coming to this amazing spa for nearly 4 years. The environment is calming. I have only had one issue with not being taken on time for an appointment. Otherwise every time they are always on time. Parking can be a challenge sometimes but my Brazilian waxes are always completed in less than 15 minutes. I had an excellent facial by Amanda Coggin. She was very professional and knowledgable about skin, and her warm spirit made my experience extremely relaxing. I found my self snoring by the end, mouth open and all. She was gentle in the extractions and the facial massage while masks were being applied were firm and soothing at the same time. She brings "good energy" and a wealth of knowledge to the experience. I've had numerous facials at other places and I highly recommend Amanda as an esthetician. I will be going back regularly for sure. She also made some good recommendations on follow on care in terms of exfoliators that have helped clear my skin. When I first moved from San Francisco to Los Angeles, I had a terrible time finding the perfect places for facials and waxing. Some seemed to only want to cater to celebrities, others were overpriced or lacking on the ambiance. Once I found Sophia's, though, it's been nothing but perfection! My eyebrows always look stellar! Her bikini waxes are quick and the least painful I've ever had. Her facials are relaxing and nourishing. I actually went to her after a botched facial from a Beverly Hills day spa that literally burnt my face, and Sophia gave me some salve (free of charge!) to put on it to help heal (and it completely helped!) I have been meaning to write a review for Sophia for months! I'm not sure if it says more about me or about Sophia that going in to wax my lady bits feels more like a girl's night than, well, a Brazilian wax. Sophia's energy is so fun and relaxing that it really takes a lot of the focus away from the process. While I can't guarantee that you will feel nothing, I can say her skill level is some of the best I've seen (felt?) and her general awesomeness makes the experience that much better. I am not a Yelp reviewer (working in the restaurant industry has seen to that) but I had to break that barrier for Sophia... and my mechanic (good bikini waxers and mechanics are something to be cherished). Absolute relaxation and full body rejuvenation, I felt like I had been restored back to health after being with Megan for 90 minutes at her beautiful space at Spa Sophia. I have been coming to see Natarsha for the last 6 months and she is amazing! Her Brazilian wax is perfection. I have highly sensitive skin and had sworn off bikini waxes until I came to Spa Sophia. I never have any issues afterwards and she is very gentle using a combination of hard and soft wax in order to maximize results and minimize pain. I just had her tint and shape my eyebrows and I have to say my brows have never looked this good (and I have been to some of the top brow specialists in town). Really great waxing services here. It's a smaller space located on Abbot Kinney, but the rooms where they do the services were open and airy. Jessica made sure I was comfortable and turned the air conditioning on, offered me water, etc. She also did a good job on my service. I went to Spa Sophia for the first time yesterday for a Brazilian wax and a facial. I seriously can't say enough good things about this place!! Sophia was the esthetician and she was AWESOME. I went in for a brow waxing and facial from Amanda and it was amazing! I now see her exclusively. She was quick and skilled with the waxing and I love how she shaped my eyebrows. It was as painless as possible. The facial was exceptional and by far the best I have ever had! I didn't know what a facial could be until I got one from Amanda. I've been going to Sophia for several years now and I'm so excited she finally opened her own studio. She's so personable, which is great especially if you are a newbie to bikini waxing. She's the kind of girl you can gab with about anything - plus carrying on a conversation takes your mind off the goings-on below the equator. So glad that I found this place. I went in for the first time last Friday. It was really easy to make an appt online, and her studio is really nice and surprisingly comfortable. She tried to explain the wax that she uses but I wasn't really paying attention- whatever it is, it works really well and hurts about 50% less than what I am used to. She lets it dry on your skin and for some reason that helps a lot. She was playing Fleet Foxes and told me a story that made me laugh (I've never felt so comfortable that I can laugh while on the bikini wax table..). So, I'm prone to ingrown hairs, and I just had to note that at my last appointment, I brought this up and Sophia spent extra time doing individual extractions of each one! Most of these I'm pretty sure I developed before I even started going to her, as my last wax place wasn't very good. She didn't charge me any extra, and everything has healed up and looks so much better. I was impressed with how carefully she removed each hair, and how cognizant she was of my pain level throughout. I have been going to this place for almost 3 years for all my waxing needs. I have no idea why it took me this long to post a review. Maybe it was my own selfish desire to keep the place low-key and easy to get an appointment at. Anyways, I was originally drawn to the place by great reviews I had seen at the time. I had been off the wax wagon for almost a year at this point after a horrifying experience at another wax place. I'll spare everyone the details but it definitely is not something I was looking to repeat. Sophia was amazing and super friendly which helps when one is getting a Brazilian. She is also quick and makes the experience as pain-free as possible. The vibe of the place is really relaxing and super cute. Very shabby chic, meets beachy vibe. Spa Sophia does much more than waxing. They also have highly-trained massage therapists and estheticians. The other day I finally decided to get a facial after experiencing frustrating adult acne flare ups. Natarsha was my esthetician and she was AMAZING!!!! She went through my normal routine and helped to tweak it to get my skin back to a clearer state. The best part was she actually simplified my routine and eliminated the number of products I was using which ultimately saved my checkbook too. It's been almost 4 weeks since my facial and after continuing to follow the super easy routine she's given me my skin has actually stayed relatively clear. I have every intention of going back to see her in the next week or so to do my follow up so we can make any necessary tweaks to really get my skin back to where it was a year ago.
