My hubby came to this restaurant as a child. They have been open since 1972. He said the place has not changed. The decor is neat and eclectic with church pew sitting. We ordered a par baked pizza to finish baking at home. The pizza was really good! They had a nice crowd leaving as it was close to closing. We talked to the owners and they were nice. The restaurant is only open 5:00-8:30 Tues-Saturday. I would like to go back and dine in and try a pasta dish. read more

Let me start by saying the staff is so kind and wonderful. We're it not for them d the amazing service I do warn people away from this spot. The food is ok. Portions are huge but unremarkable. I strongly suggest the busketty. Also if you have a baby go there immediately. You won't find a place nicer to your wee ones. My 10 month old had the time of his life dining on oyster crackers and noodles. And if they are happy does what I eat REALLY matter? 19/10 for family friendly 5/10 for food quality read more

I walked into Spangs to place a to-go order. I had written down our order (we were ordering 8 pizzas; large group) and read it off to him. He didn't read it back to us after he wrote it down, but I figured he would get it right. I was wrong. He had ordered 2 of them wrong and forgot one. I mentioned this to him and he insisted he wrote it down the way I told him. I explained I read it directly from my sheet and showed him the sheet, again. He finally agreed to have another pizza made, correctly, but after I had to 'act like a Karen', unfortunately. He was rude and seemed annoyed when I came in saying I wanted to place a to-go order. I don't think he would have fixed the issue if I hadn't made a big deal about it. The gentleman was very rude! We have been getting pizza there every year for 30+ years on our vacation. Our calamari and deep dish pizza were pretty good. My low review is based on the whole pick up experience. We were quoted 80 minutes for our pizza and that was fine, we had things to do to keep busy. I arrived at 80 minutes, and had to wait an additional 40 minutes because they misplaced my ticket along with another gentleman's. The person minding up front was not the waitress/hostess. Just some lady who called herself a "busser" the waitress seemed like a delight but this busser was very off putting and rude to people nicely trying to figure out where their orders were. There are signs posted everywhere about be patient we have very low staff, but they are still trying to do dine in and carry out with 1 waitress, a small child, and the rude busser. If they flipped to carryout or delivery only I'd maybe try it again, but them doing both was not a great experience. read more

Myself and family recently had Spangs, the pizza is delicious! Sausage is amazing, such wonderful flavor. Dough/Crust has such a nice flavor. Ordered online, was told it would be ready in an hour and it was. My wife and her sister ordered fettuccini Alfredo with chicken. Long story short they did not eat it. It was tasteless and the Alfredo sauce broke down. The chicken on top was a frozen chicken patty which also was tasteless. That was the worst looking and most tasteless food. I tried it to see myself and it was disgusting. My roast beef sandwich with au jus was not good. It was cold in the meet portion and very tasteless. If my eyes were closed I would not be able to tell what it was. We walked in with a group of 3 different parties tonight at approximately 5:10pm. The hostess spoke to the group that walked in in front of us and then called us over. The hostess was very rude when she greeted us and then told us it was an hour and a half wait. My brother nicely inquired why when putting our name in and the hostess had a huge attitude saying "I keep repeating myself. We have one server". Food is very good and portions are hearty. They are short of staff, like many restaurants in the area, so you may have to wait. But the staff work hard and are very nice and polite. I shared their Polynesian pizza (Canadian bacon & pineapple) which was delicious. Others in our large group had other pizzas, pastas and sandwiches. This is a common situation every year that we come up to the Northwoods and try to order from them. This time, however, I decided to go in and put in my order in person. When I walked up to the counter, I saw that the phone was off the hook. I tried to take a picture of it on the sly but couldn't get one where you saw the "Talk" and 45 minute length on the screen. While waiting to put in my food order, the bartender berated one of the wait staff, grabbing her by the arm and saying "Listen to me!" before explaining there was a Birthday at the bar. When I came back to pick up my food, a server shouted at the another server, "Don't give me any more tables!" Not really sure why all of this is going on in front of customers...or at all (regarding the first situation). We don't eat in as a family anymore because they have been consistently rude to us over the years due to our large party. But I'm done with carryout as well because of the hassle. read more

Honestly we went in expecting mediocre Italian good. You know how it is - the Italian restaurant has average spaghetti, cheesy decor, and corny music. I was wrong! Granted the interior hasn't changed much since we first went to Spang's ages ago, but the food was really good. We got the calamari appetizer, and it wasn't at all rubbery. It was fresh, and I really enjoyed it. I decided to get a pizza, and that was really good as well. The thin crust is fast ah, and the pizza sauce didn't give me heartburn (which is usually the case). The ONLY downfall was the wait to be seated. When we arrived, we were told it would be a 20-25 minute wait, which we thought was reasonable for a Saturday night. We weren't seated for nearly an HOUR. Had the hostess given us an accurate time, we likely wouldn't have been so annoyed. read more

Take out only during COVID!! We love going to Spang's every time we are vacationing in Eagle River. We were disappointed this week when we arrived for dinner and found out it was take out/delivery only. By that time it was an hour wait for take out. I've been going to Spang's since I was a kid. Now that my wife and I visit the Northwoods a handful of times every year, we like to frequent the restaurants I've always enjoyed. The customer service however has been going downhill over the last couple of years. Last week I ordered a small 10" pizza for carryout a few minutes before opening and was told it would be 45 minutes. I knew to give them a few extra minutes so I arrived 55 minutes after I called. When I went in the girl at the counter apologized and said it wasn't yet ready, and that it'd take about 10 more minutes, after I had been waiting for about 5 minutes to be helped. I was caught a little off-guard as I had already given them an extra 10 minutes, but said OK and I went to wait outside on the deck. After 10-12 minutes had passed I went back in and was again told my pizza was not ready. The girl apologized and gave the excuse that the restaurant got swamped right when they open. This is not an extraordinary case - they're always very busy on weekend nights. After waiting about another 5 minutes she went in to check on the pizza and came back out with it. 90 minutes to cook a pizza. Not a large pizza or an order of pizzas, but one, small, 10" pizza. Telling me on the phone it'll take 45 minutes, then taking twice as long, giving baseless excuses, and no offer to discount the order or even a discount off a future order is just plain bad customer service and a crummy way to run a restaurant. The food is good, but the business quality is awful. If my order is going to take 90 minutes, tell me outright so I know - so I know to take my business elsewhere, which is what I'll be doing from here on out. Last year I waited an extra 15 minutes for my pizza, at this rate in 5 years I'll need to order a week ahead. If you have nothing better to do with your life than wait outside twiddling your thumbs for a food order to take twice as long as you were told, by all means eat here. If you're like the rest of us, go somewhere that knows how to run a restaurant, there's plenty of other great choices around. read more

We come to this restaurant every summer for Italian comfort food. The house ranch dressing is amazing! They are offering curbside pick up for take out orders but allow at least an hour when calling in. The employee bringing the food to the car was wearing a mask and respecting social distancing when possible. The food is still as good as always. read more

I have been a regular here for years. Hands down one of the best pizzas I've ever had. The cheese and sauce gives the pizza an unreal taste. After all these years, the pizza is just as great as the time before and never gets old. Prices are a little high (high teens or low 20s for a large pizza) but it is well worth the product received. A terrible dining experience with rude and indifferent staff. Was in St Germain on vacation with my wife and 2 kids. Arrived early at about 5pm with only one or two tables occupied. Was told right away that they are short of staff and that ordering would all be done through our telephone. All ordering for food and drinks would be done through their online site info that they provided as well as giving credit card information upfront. This was unusual but not the end of the world. I certainly sympathize that staffing challenges can be difficult. However, from then on it went off the rails. We tried to use the website to order a pizza that had half and half ingredients, as well as drinks and an appetizer. The site is poorly organized but we took the required steps to order what we wanted. The staff brought out everything haphazardly. As you stopped to ask for napkins or drink refills or a question on the menu, The staff was already flustered and annoyed as more tables were being seated. They told if we wanted a drink refill, we could do it ourselves and walk downstairs to a soda station. The food was not good at all. Skimpy portions on the appetizer for the price. Then the pizza came out completely wrong from what we ordered. Ingredients were done wrong and the pizza was extremely undercooked in the center.We had already waited nearly an hour and so told the person bringing out the pizza (you really don't have a server of your own) that this was not what we ordered and so we couldn't wait for another pizza to be made. We asked for a bill of what we had already eaten in terms of our drinks and appetizers and that we were not going to pay for the pizza. That girl told us that we had to talk to the manager. The manager was annoyed right away and told us that we had used the website incorrectly. I tried to explain we use the website exactly as it was laid out and that we were given no instruction by the staff. She then argued over what we owed even though she did the math incorrectly. Again, I sympathize with any business these days that is struggling with staffing, however, I would really not recommend going here for the following reasons: terribly understaffed and the people who are working are very poor at customer service. The food is generic Italian, nothing special at all with our food that day being very badly prepared. Go somewhere else to eat. read more

Ok place. We were here with a large group. We called ahead and we had our table set for us when we got there, nice. Food was hit or miss. Fish fry was good. My shrimp de jonghe was very good. The kids chicken tenders were good and a large serving. Clam chowder and Alfredo sauce was too thick for mine and some others in my groups liking. My sons burger was over done. There are positive changes at the 'new' Spangs but with change comes growing pains and they are certainly experiencing some. We'll start with the pizza which we had as take-out last weekend. The sausage recipe was changed, why I don't know because it was pretty darn close to perfect the way it was, and it was not good. The pieces were the size of small meatballs and they were too soft and totally tasteless. We're told they are tweaking the recipe so clearly they've been getting feedback. Nice to know they are listening to their loyal customers! Upon entering the restaurant you notice they removed the cabinetry above the bar and enlarged the front counter. They opened things up and it looks good. We were told the kitchen was backed up, despite the dining room not being full, so we sat at the bar to have a drink. The drinks were of decent size and price. There were 2 bartenders which seemed one too many. They spent a lot of their time chatting with each other instead of the patrons and it was awkward trying to get their attention to ask questions. Every time we did so, the answer was "I don't know" instead of "I don't know, but I'll find out for you". We were given menus to look at while waiting at the bar. The first thing we noticed was the new menu items, many of which sounded very good, including lots of gourmet pizzas. One thing missing was the perch which was always one of our favorites. Also missing were beverages and desserts. While the menu was attractive, there were a lot of typos. We asked the bartender for a take-out menu but she said they didn't have any. I asked if the menu was on their website, no website. I asked if the menu was on their Facebook page and she shrugged. Hmmm..... Upon entering the dining room, our first impression was that we really like what owner Tom Niewald has done with the place. Having sat in those small, hard church pews more times than we care to remember, the presence of new booths and tables was a welcome sight. Our booth was extremely comfortable and could easily have fit 6 people. The new pendent lighting over each table was a nice touch as well. There was also a very high quality disposable napkin with each place setting. Missing from the dining room was some nice Italian background music which would have made the entire experience more intimate. The restaurant floor appeared to be over-staffed so it was odd that we had to wait a bit too long for wait staff to come to our table. Once our waitress, Sandy, arrived she did an adequate job serving us. We observed another waiter by the name of 'Mingo' who appeared to be very conscientious. Throughout the evening, we overheard a handful of complaints by patrons, and all the staff seemed to handle it quite professionally. Sandy asked for our drink order and I asked where the wine list was. There wasn't one. Considering liquor and wine is where a restaurant makes their largest profit margin, I found this strange. Sandy had a wine 'cheat sheet' that she let me look at but it was pretty vague. I told her what I wanted and she went to the basement and found a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc for us. It was a 2009 St. Supery from Napa Valley and was excellent! After ordering, Sandy brought a plate of bread and dipping oil to the table. One used to get a plate of antipasto but this was a nice touch. The bread and oil were good but not great. The bread could have had a harder crust and the oil seemed a bit under seasoned. The next course was soup but my husband received a salad instead. Sandy promptly exchanged it for the Italian Wedding soup he ordered. While the soup was well seasoned, it wasn't hot enough. After a long wait, dinner arrived. My husband had the veal parmigiana which had no bed of pasta with it. Considering the entrée was $19, they could have included that which is pretty much standard. I had the Maryland Lump Crab Cakes and Prosciutto Mozzarella Crostini. The crab cakes had a genuine flavor but were mushy and not served with the remoulade sauce as described in the menu. When I asked for it, I was brought a little plastic container of 1000 Island salad dressing. Not good! The crostini was visually pleasing but it wasn't baked as the menu described. I should have sent it back to be warmed but I was so hungry at this point and didn't want to wait any longer to eat. After dinner was cleared our waitress, Sandy, didn't offer dessert, coffee or an after dinner drink. By this time we had been in the restaurant for over an hour and a half which seemed a bit long for supper so we just paid our bill and headed home. I've been going to Spang's since it first opened and have been a loyal customer since then. Spangs Italian Restaurant is a landmark in St. Germain and I want the new owner/manager to succeed. They had some opening night jitters and have some kinks to work out but hopefully they'll do that quickly before losing regular customers. Will we try it again? Absolutely! read more

With the original owners all the good items are back. The pizza is always loaded with your choices and plenty if cheese. No skimping here. The side salad is fresh and actually has extras in it like carrot curls. Bread cubes and cucumber. Nice choice of dressings that seem homemade. The best for pizza in the Northwoods. read more

We have been coming to Spang's since I was a child (a few decades ago!) and it never fails to please! Such delicious, still obviously home made food (the lasagna is incredible), friendly service, plenty of food (including old fashioned antipasti plate) and cozy, comfortable, "up north" atmosphere. So glad it has stayed consistent and never tried to become "trendy". Will continue to make the drive to St. Germain from Hazelhurst whenever we're hungry for real Italian food, and a warm, old fashioned supper club environment. read more

I've been vacationing in the Northwoods my entire life. Spang's is really the only place you can get Chicago-style pizza. Like many businesses up north, this one has opened, closed, been for sale, etc. From what I was told (perhaps erroneously?), the original owners have been helping the new owners run the place this year. I went there with a group and ordered pizza - it was a quality pie. We were totally satisfied and I would recommend it if you're craving a good thin-crust during your stay in St. Germain. read more

Now, I'm not sure the Spang's is "As good as it gets!" but that's the title Yelp chose. I will say that the service, the food, the atmosphere, and the value make this a place worth visiting again. Started with drinks at the bar while we waited for a table and the bartender had a great sense of humor as we passed the time waiting for a table (less than the half hour we were told). Our waitress greeted us quickly and said she would be back shortly. After dropping off food at another table, she was right back with us. She seemed to genuinely enjoy being a part of the staff at Spang's. Ordered another round of drinks, appetizers, and our meals. She was back a few minutes later with everybody's drinks, but mine. I had ordered an Italian cocktail I had found online and the bartender wasn't sure which version (several variations apparently online) I was expecting. The waitress wrote down the recipe I had on my phone and was back with my drink and the calamari and an antipasto tray appetizers shortly along with bread. Delicious hot soup followed and small antipasto plates. As we finished those, the meals came out HOT. Portions were large and the food was very good. I really enjoyed my shrimp in clear garlic sauce. No one was able to finish their meals, but we all left happy satisfied. read more

Some of the best food we've had in the North Woods. We had fettuccini alfredo, fettuccini alfredo with chicken breast, veal parmigiana, chicken parmigiana, spaghetti and pizza. Everything was wonderful. Chicken for the fettuccini were whole chicken breast and were super crunchy (even under the alfredo sauce) and juicy. Veal was perfectly cooked. Alfredo sauce was delicious. Pizza was so good. Only downs to our meal was sitting in the back room (it was very, very loud) and the horrible service. It took forever to get our drinks and the server never came back to check on us. We had to ask other servers to send our waiter over to us three times. If it weren't for the bad service, I would have given Spang's 5 stars. Food was delicious but the service totally sucked! read more
