This review is for the Spear office on Clark St. in Brooklyn near the Promenade. I've been treated here numerous times for a variety of conditions (I have problems with my joints). The physical therapists and assistants are very friendly and knowledgeable. My only complaint is that their business model is to overbook, which forces the therapists to tend to two or even three patients at the same time, jumping from one to the other and using the assistants to cover the slack. Nobody, not even the most experienced therapist, can manage this kind of excess without losing their train of thought or forgetting to address something. It's not possible to take care of two patients at exactly the same time, but the therapists give it their best shot. read more

i wrote a review in April because the PT at spear had me push heavy plates and my meniscus torn. I know it was torn by him making me push the plates because I went to an Osteopath before I went to spear and when I returned to him after my visit with Spear, he asked me what happened?? did I fall? I said no, I went for Pt. he then had a MRI done and my Meniscus was torn and needed surgery. it is now August and I have not been able to play tennis and it has ruined my summer. read more

The PTs, assistants and manager (Scott) are all excellent at their work. I am a repeat customer, after 5 joint replacements in the past several years and I have always loved my physical therapists. I've been working with Aiden McFerran for the past year or so (after two different surgeries) and he may be the best PT I have ever worked with. i went for physical therapy because i had a small lump behind my knee. i was assessed by a very good pt and she wrote up what to do. Today, I graduated from SPEAR (and got a cute t-shirt as a symbol). I'm happy to have completed my therapy but I'll miss the amazing care I received here. The hiring manager did an exceptional job in choosing compassionate, personable, highly skilled and an overall dynamic team. I was treated by Christina and had one session with Nicole and both were excellent. It's evident they truly enjoy their work and take time to get to know the patients. The PT techs and aides were just as personable and always pleasant. The quality of care is matched by the beautiful, modern facility. Hopefully running mishaps don't bring me back here, but it's somewhere I wouldn't mind returning at all. So grateful to have had my recovery here and I'd recommend to others! read more

Husband had knee surgery and went here 4 days later to start PT. Receptionists at the main office and the BK Heights facility had said the facility was handicap-accessible; it was not. Staff said the stairlift was broken, then that no one knew how to operate it. My husband had to hop up 10 or so steps and down later, both times with assistance from an employee. This was nerve-wracking and seemed dangerous. They said they would fix the lift; I don't know if they did. Receptionists said they would forward surgeon's script to PT; they had not. Lost the first 5 or 10 minutes of the session finding and reading the email. PT was skilled. Care took place in a crowded common room and the PT diverted once from the session to instruct another client. This facility might be a good choice for people with minor injuries who can perform PT protocols with occasional guidance, but we do not recommend it for those with more serious injuries. read more

I am leaving this review 3 years later, but I feel like it's important for anyone considering SPEAR for lower back pain. I spent months in treatment here directly following microdiscectomy/laminectomy surgery for 2 herniated discs. At the time, they would book multiple patients to the same therapist within the same hour. You would get maybe 15-20 minutes of individual attention and then you would spend the rest of the time just doing the exercises that you could do at home, while staff barely watched to see if you were doing them correctly. When I asked Jimmy why this was, he said that all PT places operate this way. When I finally realized that my back was not improving, I left and began treatment at Orthology in Chelsea where they DID do individual hour long appointments and I learned that a lot of my prescribed exercises from SPEAR were hurting me, not helping me. 2 stars instead of 1 because everyone was very nice but they failed me post-surgery and I'm not over it. read more

I started going here as a referral from my primary care doctor. I was nervous because right in the height of COVID, but they have screens up at the front desk, take your temperature, have hand sanitizer everywhere and everyone wears masks. I've been about 5 times now and I feel great and comfortable going back. read more

There is just nothing easy about dealing with Spear. Hard to book. Never available. They don't return phone calls. Emails came back days later. Used to be so much better. Nicole (my PT) did a terrific job of diagnosing the problem, providing manual adjustments, suggesting exercises, and adapting as my healing progressed and regressed. I was very impressed with the quality of treatment, the thoroughness and the kindness of my PT, the many PT techs (who gave clear feedback and correction) and Sophie (the LMT). Dealing with their billing department is frustrating and confusing. It often required multiple calls to sort out a problem. read more

I worked with Spear for more than 7 months and every aspect of my experience was encouraging and helpful. I had a marked improvement in strength and mobility and by the time we were done, not only had my hip issues almost completely disappeared, I had been prepared to continue working on my own for further improvement. Most of my work was with Leah Brodfeuhrer, initially in the office and then, once the pandemic took hold, via online sessions. Leah was patient, able to explain clearly what needed to be done and why, and willing to adapt to my strengths and weaknesses. This is not to say that she did not challenge me: I doubt I could have improved without moving out of comfort zones, but she inspired me to do so. Other staff at Spear were also pleasant to deal with and very supportive, and I recommend their services enthusiatically. read more

I have worked with the Brooklyn height location for almost a year. Everyone was so supportive and really care about helping people to get better from the bottom of their hearts. I feel very lucky that I found them and really appreciate the positivity they brought to everyone who's trying to thrive altogether. SPEAR has been great. I had some shoulder pain starting this summer and briefly saw a different PT with no improvement. SPEAR's been working with me for about three months, and I'm almost back to 100%. Hannah in particular is amazing. She's incredibly sharp and is able to help me better articulate any pain or discomfort I'm experiencing. She's built a routine that's easy for me to do on my own but still effective. She's been flexible in scheduling too, which has been a huge help with a highly variable schedule. The facility is clean and the front desk staff have been helpful with filing for insurance claims. SPEAR was a great experience from day one. The front desk worked with me when my insurance would not. The place had a positive and energetic atmosphere and the staff were on top of their game every step of the way. Recovery is difficult and finding a quality PT is IMPORTANT. After a second big surgery I was certain I wouldn't regain full function and be destined to live with chronic pain. The positivity and encouragement from my PT Hannah Swaim was invaluable. Her no nonsense we can do this attitude was extremely comforting and she worked HARD to get me back into shape. By the end of the summer I was swimming over a mile a day -something unimaginable when I started. If you're lucky enough to book Hannah Swaim as your PT you'll know what I'm talking about. I've been going to SPEAR for the past 3 weeks and can't say enough good things about the entire organization. The front desk was extremely helpful in getting me scheduled for my first visit and for letting me know my insurance benefits upfront. It's always helpful to understand what you're on the hook for before going in, and I felt like they worked hard to make sure I understood everything. All of the PTs are also awesome as well - everyone is super friendly, encouraging and I feel like they genuinely care about how I'm progressing. They put time and effort into making sure every patient is taken care of and work as a team to make sure you get 1:1 attention for your entire visit. You can tell every PT really knows what they're doing and that they take a lot of care and attention to do top notch work. I've been going to Spear for about 5 months now and I can't speak highly enough about this place. The facilities are always super clean and the equipment is top notch. I can't say enough good things about Connor! He was kind, insightful and efficient in getting me back to running with healthier habits. I was very impressed with his ability to really target each exercise and balance out every session so I was always working hard, but never overwhelmed on the road to recovery. She was thorough and seemed genuinely concerned with getting to the bottom of my issue and helping me progress. She worked with me on a very helpful course of treatment and took the initiative to proactively schedule appointments for weeks ahead so we could maintain continuity. Before and after my double knee replacement, I worked with Scott Louis, who I credit for making my recovery fast and pretty painless! I did a month with Scott pre-replacement and 5 months post. His knowledge of the body and just how it works was impressive, and his interventions thoroughly considered. He was highly skilled and a close listener, always open and responsive to my input. When I had difficulties associated with the replacements -- for example, bursitis -- he could identify the problem and treat it accordingly. Scott and the entire Spear team were friendly, warm, helpful, and welcoming. All around, My experience with Spear was top-notch! read more

I have a very active lifestyle that was turned upside down by a major shoulder surgery. After my surgeon approved me for physical therapy, I was nervous and uncertain about what to expect. Mostly, I was scared that I wouldn't be able to make a full recovery. Jimmy and his team completely turned my fear around on the first day. During my first exam, Jimmy was totally focused on understanding my condition and providing a plan for recovery. I spent the next two months in treatment, visting SPEAR several times a week. I was always really comforted by how attentive the team would be be. Jimmy, in particular, was always listening and working with the staff to adjust my exercises as I made progress or encountered difficulty. At the end of every session, I always had a clear direction on how to keep my recovery moving forward. So, on my first day of treatment, my left arm had virtually no range of movement outside of the sling it had been in since surgery. After two months of therapy I returned to rock climbing. Now, many months later I'm performing in my sport at a higher level than I was before my surgery. I don't think I could say enough great things about how Jimmy and the staff made this possible. It means the world to me that I was able to find such good care and put all the fear of physical limitation behind me. read more

This is one of the most caring facilities ever. I was referred by my pain management doctor because of spinal stenosis. The first therapist I met was Jimmy Olayos who made me feel so comfortable even though I was in terrible pain. The entire team is awesome from the moment you enter the door. Elaine helped me through some incredibly painful and challenging hand/shoulder issues from spending too much time as a desk jockey and musician. We used Spear at 41 Clark for about 8 months, initially twice a week and then once a week. My daughter started seeing OT Elaine Crerar when she was about 4 months old because she had been diagnosed with torticollis. Elaine was an essential part of the process of making her better. She was always very clear in explaining the issue, consequences and short term as well as long term goals for her development. The sessions were always very productive and she was very professional, yet very sweet and caring with my baby. I never had any issues with scheduling or punctuality. I came into Spear in August 2018 after having a total knee replacement in July. Just to let you know knee replacement is a very arduous recovery. I needed a lot of help and support, both physically and mentally. I actually thought, as is common in most knee replacements, I would never get better. Jimmy O. was my therapist and he led me through months of therapy and got me to the other side. He knew exactly what he was doing. I was in good hands. The set-up at Spear Brooklyn Heights is a very supportive and is totally organized around the needs of the patient. They have their act together. There is a team of people who take care of you; ensuring a seamless and productive experience. All the staff, from the front desk to the therapy techs, were there to support me. It's like a family. Everyone was focused on improving my range of motion and strength capacity. I wouldn't be where I am without them. I am indebted to them. It enabled me to get through a tough recovery. read more

He and the rest of the staff at this location are top notch and the care is very informed and professional. I only came in for a tour, but had a great experience! The facility is brand new and very clean (despite a bit of finishing construction). Everything from the front lobby to the bathrooms and even the exercise area feels more like a high-end spa than a doctor's office. During my walk-through I also had the pleasure of meeting many of the employees, including the receptionists, the PT techs, the massage therapist, two physical therapists, and the clinic director. When I walked into Spear, it smelled like fresh paint and still had some contractors putting the finishing touches on the beautiful new space. I was lucky enough to come in for an appointment in their first week! Jimmy and the Brooklyn Spear team nailed it from the very beginning, with great treatment and flawless scheduling/check-in -- even while still getting the place off the ground. I came in with tendinitis and within a few weeks, left with the ability to hop, run, and get back into training (slowly, of course). I have only the best things to say about Jimmy -- he's attentive, friendly, and a total pro. Hopefully I won't get hurt again anytime soon, but if I do, totally know where to go for good care. At the end of last year, I found out that the excruciating pain I'd been feeling in my back and legs was a herniated disc. My doctor sent me to SPEAR, and I ended up spending five months getting PT twice a week. That was a lot of time to get to know them, and I can't praise them highly enough. Nicole Surach, my physical therapist, is kind, encouraging, empathetic, smart, and really, really knows what she's doing. The receptionists, the techs, Sophie the massage therapist, everyone was wonderful from start to finish. The entire team works together and always seemed to be keeping an eye on me when I was there, which was really nice. The facility feels like a good gym. As I was preparing to run my first half marathon when both my knees started bothering me. When my doctor recommended physical therapy I was not excited at all. I had the idea I would be stuck in a room for hours a week doing non challenging exercises! Oh boy I was wrong!!!! From the first day I visited SPEAR I already got a different feeling. Jimmy was so attentive and took the time to understand my issue and what really would be a good recovery path. He made me push myself and work hard for my goal. I improved so much within just a few weeks that I was able to finish my first half marathon with no pain, no injuries and a much better time than ever anticipated. The staff is extremely attentive, from the nice ladies at the front desk, to the therapists and assistants. I can only thank the SPEAR team for such an amazing experience with physical therapy. Incredible in every way. When I limped into Spear I thought it was just a stop over before surgery. Turns out Jimmy and his team had other plans. They created a rehab program that restored strength to my legs and I'm in way better spot than I thought I would be. Everything about this facility is topnotch from the efficient and friendly way you are greeted and checked in to the therapists themselves. There is a team approach in the treatment room that means that at any given time someone is watching or checking in on you to make sure you are ok and doing the exercises correctly.
