Unfortunately, we had a snake-like experience here recently. We brought our Honda Pilot in for new breaks. Shortly after they started working on it, we were told that the cost would be double their original quote for more work. After agreeing, we arrived at the counter to pay and were warned that the timing belt would need to be changed soon - another $1000+ fix. This wasn't an issue with the car before, and we started the car to hear a new sound under the hood coming from the timing belt. We told them about the sound immediately, and they said it was there when we brought it in, which isn't true. Now, they won't look at it without a guarantee of paying for the replacement service.. No apologies and a blunt tone from them (as if to say we're SOL), with no way to prove anything.. I don't feel good about the experience here, and will not return as a customer. read more

I've been coming to Specialty Auto for 20 years now, and I refuse to buy any type of car that they can't work on. It can be hard to find a shop that doesn't recommend unnecessary repairs, but SA always explains exactly what is needed and why, in layman's terms, and is prompt and courteous. I never feel like I'm getting ripped off. In fact, several times I've asked for a service and been told I don't need it. That's hard to find! Wow, what a incredibly friendly and clean business! My brother and I walked in on a whim to get a pre-purchase inspection on a Honda CR-V we had driven there from the dealership. Ron I believe(sorry, I hope that's right) immediately greeted us and agreed to do a inspection right then and there! We left the car and about 45 minutes later he gave us a call, he had found that the transmission which we suspected, was about to go. So he saved me from an enviable cash cow cash, so thank you! These guys are great. They got me right in, without an appointment,, to deal with a broken ignition switch issue, even though they looked pretty busy. They were friendly and easy to deal with, polite and attentive. As it turned out, the issue fixed itself (don't ask how), and they charged me nothing. The tow truck driver also gave them high praise. I was excited to try this auto shop. They got me in without an appointment for an oil change, done in less than 3 hours even though they looked busy. My complaint is that they 1. Charged me for things I didn't ask for. I asked them to call me and ask if it's okay to do more than an oil change, and my $75 oil change turned into a $135 trip. They changed multiple things without asking if I could even afford it. 2. One thing they "fixed" was still busted when I got home. They "changed" my tail light; but didn't plug it in all the way, so it was just sitting next to the socket. Jiffy lube discovered it. 3. They rotated my tires, but forgot a lug on my tire when they put it back on, and jiffy lube said it would take 30 minutes to get the tire off because of the way this place put it back on. 4. I was going to take my car back to get my questions answered, and the receipt they gave me only had the words "maintenance" on it. So I couldn't really prove they did certain things wrong, because they kept no record. I will not be going back.....friendly people...but I don't think they care about the quality of work they put out. read more

As far as I can tell Mark is an excellent Subaru mechanic. I've only ever been treated with respect and open communication here. I appreciate the extra explanations about what needs to be done and honesty. I had my clutch replaced and, though not completely apparent at first, one of the parts was a bit faulty and making it not quite right. Mark had to order a new, new part and do the job all over again free of charge. He did this without a complaint to me and even replaced an extraneous part for free for my troubles even though it was really the manufacturer's fault. Top notch. read more

I used to take my Subaru here until a new mechanic took over. It took 3 trips here to get the engine light to finally go off. Later I saw that the DEQ had the diagnosis printed out for me after I failed the test due to the light being on. The mechanic here couldn't figure it out, but DEQ's computer could. I spent a few hundred dollars for each trip to this mechanic. read more

I really want to give Speciality a better rating, but I can't. I've taken my 93 VW Eurovan there twice and the last time was a bad experience. Sadly, I really like and trust Mike the VW mechanic. He's just not great at communication and he's really poor at finishing work on schedule. The last time I went he wasn't able to fix a seemingly small problem on my van - this despite telling me he knew the problem and could have it fixed easily. Even worse, Mike was attempting to fix a problem that he had supposedly fixed the last time I brought the van to them. I don't want to trash Specialty or Mike, the VW specialist. But the last time I was there I waited at the shop from 3pm to 7pm for my van. I was told the van would be done in the morning. This was the third time there had been miscommunication about when the van would be done. This despite me calling and leaving messages to confirm pick up time. You gotta check your messages at least a few times a day, right? The worst part is that the van was not fixed after I waited for so long! Neither problem (radiator fans and transmission fluid leak) was solved and hilariously the wipers had stopped working after the visit! (It's only hilarious because I was able to fix the problem myself easily, they had just misplaced a fuse. But it was just the final straw for me and it was a perfect example of the lack of attention to detail.) To Mike and Speciality's credit, they did not charge me for the visit. I'm moving on to another mechanic. I may have caught Mike on a bad couple of days, but it was too much for me. There is no doubt that Mike is a good guy and honest. I'm not convinced he's the best mechanic and I'm positive he's not great on the customer service/communication side. read more

Called and navigated their voicemail options, which led me to talking to Ron. I asked "Are you the mechanic that services Lexus?" to which I got a reply of "yes." I then said I had some major service that I needed completed and asked if I could get a quote via e-mail. The answer was a curt "nope." There was no "sorry, I don't have that capability," or "we prefer you bring your car in and give the quote in person." Just "nope." I sat there for about 5 seconds waiting for Ron to follow-up in some way, but there was just a "HELLO?" I finally said thank you and wished him a nice day. This is not the kind of person I want doing thousands of dollars worth of work on my vehicle. read more

I do not recommend taking your Audi to Mike at Specialty Auto. He seems to be best fit for VWs. We learned after taking our Audi to Mike for work, that inferior, after-market USED parts were installed and we were charged full price, plus it took over a week to fix, which should have only taken two days at most. We were told this after it broke down within a week and another shop was hired to fix Mike's "repairs"...Ugh! read more

I've taken my Nissan here for a few years now. I trust these guys! Here's an example from my last visit over a weird key/lock issue. They took a few minutes to check my car out right away, and discussed the possible solutions. One suggested solution, which was by far the cheapest, was taking the car to a certain local locksmith instead. Mark was clear that the solution may or may not work, but because it would save so much money and time if it did, he recommended giving it a try. First point: integrity! Who suggests that a customer try going somewhere else because it might be cheaper and faster?! I took it to the locksmith, who ended up not being able to fix the issue. I took it back to Specialty and they did fix it- faster than they'd promised. And then when I went to pay the final total, without me saying a thing, they deducted the amount I'd paid the locksmith. I have been getting my Honda serviced by Ron for a few years, and have had a range of repairs done - from the less serious brake pad change to cracked head gaskets replaced. I have always been pleased with the quality of work and how long the car runs without trouble between repairs. I have never had the experience of being told it is actually going to cost more than the original quote, and a couple times i ended up paying less than initially quoted. I worked with the Nissan crew, and they were great. I went in for a regular service and inspection on my Versa. They caught a couple issues that needed attention and explained everything thoroughly. Apparently, I'm the only person who still drives a stick, so they ended up having to order the parts which added an additional trip. After the repairs, they were happy to show me the damaged parts. Mike has been keeping our 2000 VW Passat running for the past 4 years. We have 180,000 miles on it, and it is running strong thanks to him. We have had bad experiences in the past with mechanics screwing up this car, or just charging an insane amount. He always has been super accommodating, reasonably priced and honest with what needs to be done and what can wait. I am not sure why the other review is so negative, but as anyone in business knows you can't please everyone no matter how hard you try. Our experience with Mike has been nothing short of excellent, and he is the only mechanic who will ever touch our VW. We have also taken our Toyota Tacoma there, and they did a great job as well. read more
