New larger patio, and kids allowed! There are only a couple of options in Ladner with great views and it's a treat to get to enjoy this one with our son. I don't think we've ever seen another kid during our visits so if you aren't looking for an experience with tones of families around, I don't think people have quite caught on yet. We have been to Speeds numerous times over the years but we have been very impressed by the changes made by new management recently. Favourite menu items, like the fish and chips, California wrap, and steak sandwich maintained, plus some new additions that we are still working through trying. We had reservations for next weekend for almost a month now to celebrate a birthday. Speeds decided to have a set menu to coincide with the Carol Ships display. They announced the set menu a week and a half before and have informed us that we cannot order off the regular menu. We have kids coming and as much as we want to try this place out, I doubt the kids want to eat duck! read more

Nice comfortable pub. Bartender was friendly and the food was good. I only had a coffee but if I was going back for a few pints on my own I'd be concerned about the lack of space at the bar. It certainly could be a better design. But I prefer sitting at the bar rather than low tables. Other than that I think it's a place checking out. read more

Went with a recovering alcoholic, he ordered a mocktail, when we received the bill, the drink was $12 instead of $6 and there was an alcohol tax. When we questioned it, they gave a funny look like "what's the problem". No idea how serious this mistake was nor any concern. We received a $6 refund, no refund on the alcohol tax or tip, no idea. Clearly they didn't get any booze training and clearly under new ownership. I will not go back. read more

Since the new owners have taken over the place is a bit more bland. The decor screams cheap and safe. Generally a decent place tho. Had the Big Bird a fried chicken bacon burger. Very good, juicy and lots of flavour. Good beer selection and an outdoor seating area right on the Fraser River. Very scenic. Busy on a Saturday night but not overly frantic. A mix of old and young. Came by for a quick bite on a Saturday at 2pm and the place was pretty busy. Mostly older crowd drinking. The service left a lot to be desired. Waited a while for seating, table clearing, the bill. I'm hoping it was a one off because all of the staff seemed very nice. The food was good and decent pub selection on the menu. I am not certain if I have done a review so this is either an update or a new review. This pub was recently sold and new owners took over. They removed the carpet, put new flooring in and repainted it the standard grey Color. This is great but they painted over the oak panelling. Still it looks great. Problem is they did not change the tables or chairs. The square tables are very small and for 4 people extremely crammed with the food on it. Very noisy but it is a pub and we were there at dinner time, 630pm. It thinned out around 7 so it turned out great. Now the food. Their special soup was ribeye chilli. I think I got 2 small pieces of ribeye and little chilli. I found it a bit watery. It came warm. My expectations are than when food is served it should be hot and it can cool at the table instead of under a warmer. We didn't ask for the soup to be served first which was our fault and the soup arrived moments before the food. We were in viewing distance of where the food was prepared and noticed our meals sitting under the warmer. Yes the fries came warm and not hot. I had tartar sauce for my piece of fish which was runny. Most places the sauce is thick. The steak sandwich was prepared perfectly, the cob salad was great and the salmon salad was great, real salmon and not the pressed stuff. The waiter was a bit slow but she still did a great job. Well this was so unfortunate. This was my first and last time visiting, I'm a local and was super excited to check them out. We were here for over 2 hours for a simple meal. Had to wait to order drinks, reorder drinks, order food, get take out containers, order dessert, get the Bill, even getting change for half our cash bill took 5 mins. We wanted to be in and out in under an hour and this was just ridiculous. If you can't handle the rush and the amount of customers then don't seat the customers. Food was okay, drinks were okay. No drink menu, no beer selection besides the basics. Will not be back. read more

This is a perfectly normal little pub that caters to the locals of Ladner, myself being one of those locals. The food is solid, including delicious burgers (which happen to be on special on Wednesdays for 5 bucks). The wings are bountiful and cheap, and the chowder is down right delicious, damnit! The service has always been great, and sure, Speed's MAY cater to a more geriatric crowd than some may be used to, but I like a little senior with my salad (HO-YEAH). No. I'm kidding. That was inappropriate. Ladner is alive and kicking at Speed's. It's right on the water so you can watch the boats, smile at the toothless fishermen, and devour a delicious burger. That sounds pretty damn good to me... so excuse me while I go eat these deep fried pickles. read more

I don't usually go to pubs, they're known to have poor quality food, unhealthy, known for bar fights (I watch too many movies I know) and I'm not that in to watching sports. I do go to them if a friend suggest we go or I get recommended. From appearance, joint is fairly laid back with seemingly regulars, not noisy and has consistent traffic even on weekday daytime. It also stands out as being fairly unhealthy with fish n chips, grilled cheese sandwiches and heavy chowder soups but they're all done very well! All made fresh with all the proper ingredients, namely bacon, cheese, bread of choice etc. I'll keep coming back, and best of all prices are very reasonable. read more

The ironically named Speed's, is a great place to go if you don't have to be anywhere else that same evening. Waited 60 minutes for our appetizer, and 90 minutes for our mains. The appy was paltry for the time and cost, the main was nothing special. The server was apologetic about the slow food, the place was clean, the draft beer selection featured one choice from the local craft brewery. Nice location on the water in downtown Ladner, but the slow speed of the service and underwhelming taste of the food is enough to make this my one and only visit. read more

I was there with a buddy last weekend. When I arrived, I was not greeted in the manner that I was suppose to... They did not have a lot of beers of tap for one. However the burgers are cheap but extremely dry. When we got our bill, it was all in one total, and we requested to have it split us(2 ways). The waitress responsed with "Do it yourself" and SLAMMED the bill on the table for us. Well let me say we knew how much to tip here. If this is how they serve their customers i dont want to know whats going on in the back to make those cheap dry burgers. This was probably the worst experience I've ever had dining in Ladner. It took over 20 minutes to get a beer. The food was horrible, some under cooked, some overcooked. Wow........ I have never been treated like a second class citizen,or should i say an inconvenience for a server. my husband and i met our friends there for lunch, it took 23 minutes for my husband to get a pint of beer, i ordered a 1/2 carafe of red wine the glass came dirty and the carafe had dried food on it ....YUCK ..... i asked for a fresh glass and was told that's how all our wine glasses look. I replied can it please be washed , and i got attitude and rolling of her eyes... One of us ordered chicken strips to start and they came RAW, again server was rude no eye contact frankly a WITCH... Then came our lunches some of them ICE COLD some of them BURNT some of them without what was stated as the special (Topping) . At this point our frustration was at a HIGH level, we asked that the server remove all food from the table as we had no trust in the kitchen. She told us that the food had been taken off the bill, we then asked for our liquor bill she said that it was also removed from the bill , we told her we have no problem paying for what we had drank. She then angrily stormed away came back to the table grabbed my 1/2 carafe of wine and slammed it on the bar. We all work hard for our $$$ and should never been treated as we did...... A nice little pub in Ladner, with great dockside views from some tables. Service is good. Food can be good or substandard, depending on what you order. I think that the burgers are good. My dining partner was once quite disappointed by the Greek salad. For my tastes, this is a better food choice than next-door Sharkey's. read more

Speeds... What can anyone say about a dream? Speed took a long time to get his! This is a true neighbourhood pub. Neighbours, Regulars, New Be's, Boaters, Condo Owners, Fishermen, First Nation, First Daters, Elicit Rendezvous...you get it all. Food is standard Pub Fare... Consistent portions, good basic food. Service goes from 3 to 10 depending on who is working and if they are having a good day! They are the ones who make the difference (Hot Food...Cold Food). You can always see Speed in the shadows, if you have time , talk to him... And say hi! You may get a story... Or not! ;) read more
