I had an oil change in Nov 2025 at Speedy's and went to a different place in April '26. Speedy's had used the wrong plug and to keep it from leaking they sealed it up w/ a sealant. So the recent place ordered a new plug and washer and it leaked. So now I have to get a new oil pan which is going to cost $2,600. When I called Speedy's to complain and ask for help they said we would never do that and hung up on me. Who else could have done it?? read more

These guys are hit or miss at best. First experience went well, just bought a 2011 car and two weeks into owning the car it dies on me. Have it towed to this shop, they diag it and find it has a bad alternator. It's fixed and back in the road less than 24 hr later. Second visit, I asked for an oil change and state inspection. I go to get my car and told its $20. To which I replied is the oil free? Oops we forgot. Smh. Third time, need another oil change and a 4wa and my car is pulling hard to the right. Ma'am your tires are the culprit and no charge on the alignment. I knew good and well that my alignment was way off, but apparently the lube tech decided to try some new stuff and didnt know how to read a 4wa printout. No charge on the 4wa ma'am, get some tires. Bottom line, no charge isn't customer service. I had to take my vehicle to tread quarters of all places to get my alignment and low and behold it was out. The manager of Speedy is super nice, apparently so much so, he doesn't have his techs in line. There may be a bunch of crappy reviews of the service at Speedy, but this will not be one of them. Three days ago I returned to my 2020 VW to find an expanding puddle of antifreeze flowing from beneath. I gingerly turned the ignition key and the red dashboard warning light lit up. I nursed my car the short drive home. I called Jim at Speedy on Monday morning and asked if he thought it safe to drive three miles to his shop if I first filled the antifreeze reservoir with water. He said "yes," but advised me to bring a water jug with me and to watch the instrument panel. Jim said his mechanic would run a pressure check to detect any leaks, that it would cost $50, and that he'd phone to tell me what any further repairs would cost. He called me later in the day to say his guy could find no leak and asked if he could keep my car overnight so as to look for a leak first thing this morning. Finding nothing, he ran the engine hot and reinspected. Still no detectable leak. Jim then called to tell me he could find no leak, to retrieve my car at my convenience, and that there would be no charge. I admit I'd rather know what caused my car to bleed coolant so I could get it repaired for the road, but I am convinced Jim and his guy made every reasonable attempt to isolate the problem, so I am happy with their effort. And, despite the complaints of other customers that Speedy will cheat you, my experience is that they won't. After all, the charge for that day-and-a-half effort was zero dollars. I thought I liked this place after my first experience so I returned. Showed up on a Wednesday morning and was told they could not get me in for oil change and inspection. Jim told me to try Thursday but best bet would be Friday morning. I showed up at 8am Friday, and he turned me away AGAIN saying I didn't get there soon enough. Why not just admit you are understaffed. The parking lot was nowhere as full as it was on Wednesday. Additionally I had to wait 20 minutes while tire options were being discussed with another customer, only for Jim to tell me they couldn't help. Just rude. Had to make arrangements to take the day off since they don't accept appointments for inspections. If you have days and days to wait for basic services, and the time to keep coming back over and over, this is your place. read more

WOMAN BEWARE.... MISLEADING FORM AND BAD SERVICE I went there in the afternoon before work and filled in the form, which said: "Check list"... I asked for them to check my oil. They charged me $36. I wasn't called or asked if I wanted it. Later my boyfriend said he put in new oil. I told the man I wanted a state inspection. I did not see it on the form. I would have though they would have called me. NO... So now I am going somewhere else. The people who worked there showed complete disinterest. As a 70 year old women, this is terrible. To say I'm disappointed is an understatement. Jim makes you feel like you're getting taken care of and will even tell you they've "fixed" a different issue "free of charge". Those so called fixes led to him telling me it would be a thousand dollars for an a/c hose that his guy "fixed" when replacing my alternator. I've never had an a/c issue with my car but all of a sudden I have this leak and it's going to cost me a grand?! I was told "unfortunately nothing is cheap when it comes to a/c's". Well I'll tell you what Jim I went to Midway Auto Repair on E 25th the next day and Eddie found the leak by using a dye to trace it out and the part cost $10 NOT $700!! My a/c was back up and running that day for $250! The dye option was not even mentioned at Speedy's it was straight to the most expensive solution. I'll give Speedy's this, if your in a bind and need your car back quickly they'll get it to you with your original issues fixed but you'll be back to get you "free of charge fix" looked at real soon....Just go somewhere else read more

Norfolk Ghent Manager Jim is absolutely customer oriented--He has his mechanics go the extra mile and he himself is very capable of giving technical mechanical reasonable understandable answers about everything. My family has gone there for years & never been overcharged. They've gone the extra mile every time. One time they couldn't fix some thing after spending two days trying--but did not charge! (but they still cleaned out the sunroof drain lines for free while trying to fix the back hatch).....Always reliable -always speedy -always honest! read more

I used Speedy without issue for a state inspection. I then referred Speedy to a work colleague for her state inspection. Speedy failed her inspection and quoted her nearly $600 in repairs to pass the inspection. My colleague th took her car to a dealership who passed the car without any repairs required. I found this troubling. The owner taking the time to review my initial comment shows a measure of diligence. I would have preferred, however, if he would have impressed that the he would look into the issue, rather than offering speculation to the quality of the dealer's review. To close: this is one anecdotal encounter. These guys may be great in aggregate. But in this instance it apparently would have cost my colleague nearly $600 to have a car pass inspection - a vehicle her dealer approved without further incident. read more

For those of you who don't want to get screwed in more ways than you would like, avoid here AT ALL COSTS. I came here to get my car inspected, because it is just down the street from where I live, and I figured that I should give my business to a small mom and pop shop/local chain versus a national franchise. They also offered $5 off of the usual state inspection fee of $16, so I figured, why not. I arrived at 7:29AM on a Saturday and was the second person in line (it is a first come, first serve basis). They were probably done inspecting my car by 8AM. They called me and told me the following "wrong" things that I had on my car: 1- a few parking decals/stickers and remnants on my front windshield (like the ones you need for parking zones) 2- decor hanging from my rearview mirror (think like when you hang mardi gras beads or fuzzy dice, except it was a few different other stuff) 3- my front lights were "too dirty" and needed to get cleaned internally (with a machine or whatever) **I have gotten my car inspected 3 years prior to this, and not once was I ever told that I had to remove those stickers, rearview decor or fix my front lights. I call B.S.** They said that the cost of everything would be $89 and some change to clean the lights and have me pass inspection. Otherwise, I could go elsewhere cheaper to clean my lights and do it myself and return to them within a week and pay a $1 re-inspection fee. I was afraid that even if I were to try to clean it myself with an at-home kit or to get it done cheaper for only like $30 less, what's to say that these swindlers wouldn't find some other thing on my car to ding and cause me to fail my re-inspection? So I just said, "screw it" and told them they could clean my lights and to get it done and over with in one go. Time is money sometimes. So after everything was said and done and I looked at the receipt, I was PISSED. The front light cleaning was $60 (fine, whatever). But they charged me $10 to just remove the few stickers off of my car and $5 just to take down my decor hanging on the rearview mirror. Stuff that I could have EASILY done in 5 minutes had they just told me. And then they charged me a "$1 removal fee". When all they really did was throw my rearview decor onto the passenger seat of my car. I cry B.S. My total ended up costing me $89.65 after my $5 off coupon. Just to get my car inspected. I now know that I should have just gone to my Honda dealership and gotten them to inspect it (probably correctly, too) for I'm sure 1/3 of the price of what I ended up paying. So if there's anything you learn today, do not EVER come here. They are just trying to find ways to overcharge you on the stupidest things. Shady people with a shady reputation apparently (my friend said he has gone there in the past, and they charged him bogus charges as well). Fine, overcharge me an extra $20. Even $30. But when I'm paying $70+ more than I really should, I call it scamming. read more

I was working on my car myself and installed a part incorrectly. This particular part was very tough to undue once installed. I was very frustrated and irritated trying to fix what I had just done. So I decided to call up the local shop for assistance because I knew if I had just payed them a little fee they'd be able to get it done correctly with no issues. Well I was completely wrong. After receiving my car back I was super relieved and happy. One day on my way back from work I was cruising down the Jordan bridge in portsmouth when all of a sudden my car looses gears. I'm like wtf just happened? Checked the hood to see what was wrong and sure enough it was that part they claimed was "fixed" so I called them up again explained to them what happened. I was very upset because it was very dangerous and I could've gotten hurt. They were for the most part cool about it and took it in free of charge and said "This won't happen again". Well not even a week later the car breaks down again on my way to work. I once again call them up and explain what happened. They take a look at it and In short they blamed the parts and said oh "you have faulty parts we have master mechanics here are guys know what their doing" and then they decided to diagnose something completely diffrent on the vehicle that I knew was perfectly fine and they claimed the whole assembly needed to be replaced and wanted to charge me 400 dollars. Thats where I drew the line because even I knew that part wasn't broken. I'm a young sailor in the USN and I brought up the situation to my chain of command. I happened to run into a guy in my division that used to work at Ford (Keep in mind my car is a ford) I explained to him the situation and showed him some pictures and he pretty much said that they were trying to scam me. I got the car towed to my place he came over and within 20 minutes my car was back on the road and guess what? It hasn't broke down sense!! And we didn't have to replace the whole assembly like they were saying!!! My LPO and my shopmates were very upset with the situation and wanted me to get Legal involved so we could blacklist there company but i figured I wouldn't take that route and just write this review so anyone that decides to go to this place has a heads up before they get there. read more

Got my car inspected which went fine, failed needing new brake pads and front rotors. Speedy quoted me $595 to do the work - which is why I don't recommend them. I went to Big Al's about a mile or so away on Granby street and paid $319 - headed back to speedy and got my inspection sticker. Do not take your care here especially if you're a single woman. They will dismiss you entirely, not listen to a word you say and then do whatever they want. I took my car in because the car was running rough and the OIL light was flashing when I drive the car. After recently having to replace the head gasket on the car I wanted to be proactive about any potential issues. When I went to pick my car up I received a lecture about how its just a tire pressure sensor. Wrong light. That's not the light I brought my car in for. Low and behold the technician who checked my car out DIDN'T EVEN pop my hood or CHECK MY OIL at all. Basically, the original tech didn't listen when I said what I was concerned about, they just looked for a light....Then when I tried to explain my issue the technician grew frustrated and repeatedly said "I CAN'T DIAGNOSE A LIGHT THAT'S NOT ON MAM." Meanwhile, you didn't TRY to diagnose anything. Keep in mind I explained all of this to the technician ahead of time. It's very clear it went in one ear and out the other and no one cared what my actual issue was. When I originally took my car in yesterday, the shop manager looked at me like I was stupid and told me to bring it in tomorrow morning. I did and to my surprise I see these two other guys here who were very rude and did not match the service level I thought I could expect from this place. I'll go elsewhere. read more

I went here for the first time on the 23rd of February, around 9AM for a state inspection thinking it wouldn't take long. I was warned when I walked in that it might be about a 2 hour wait. It ended up taking only about 30 minutes. Reggie at the front was personable and nice to chat with while I waited. I needed an oil change and choose Speedy's because it was close to home. The service was fair. The gentleman that worked up front said he called when my car was ready, but I didn't hear the phone and he didn't leave a message. If I hadn't called to follow up, I don't think I would have gotten my car back the same day. The mechanic that worked on my car appeared knowledgeable and personable, luckily he was sitting in the waiting room when I came for my car, otherwise I don't know I would have found out I was due for for some other routine maintenance. Additionally, the gentleman working the front would not give my check-in discount despite my request. Terrible place, I took one vehicle in to get inspected and they failed it on things that were not even on inspection list. Then said it could be fixed for about 3000.00 dollars. I took it to another place to have it checked off of their list and 90% was lies. So they were 10% honest. I took another vehicle in about 6 months later,,,why I'll never know bit my friend said they cleaned up their act... Nope failed me for third brake light because it was not bright enough!!. So not legitimate. Then were so kind as to offer to fix for 200.00 dollars. 150 in parts and 50.00 to install, because the only place to find part is cali... I found it on eBay for 35.00. They said bring it back and they would pass it because the light being dim isn't enough to fail it... They failed it again...you don't say. Do not go here ever read more

I took my car here on a Tuesday around noon for a state safety inspection. I had already called around to 30 other auto shops and this place was the only one that said the wait wouldn't be long. I arrived about an hour after I had planned to, but they said the wait was about 2 hours and it ended up only taking about 30-45 minutes. I was very pleased with my service here! read more

They did an excellent job with stopping my car from running hot. It was covered under the diagnostic fee which was $50.00. They did some other minor engine work for a price which I thought was pretty reasonable. It would be nice if they had later hours on Saturday. read more

I took a Pace bike to downtown and back probably taking 45 minutes max and he called right when I came back saying my car was done! I asked them to check the brakes and got an oil change. They called and told me "they drove it around" and couldn't find an issue with the brakes. No problem, rainy weather likely due to the kind of issue I had with the brakes, and they had integrity in telling me my brake pads didn't need replacement. Also recommended new tires and an air filter change which I declined, and asked when my car would be ready. Said they were changing the oil now and hung up before I could say anything else. Went in to get my car (guessed the time, with no call for when it was done), and paid for the oil change without issue. Ended up being $47.00 for a mid grade oil change- close to what they advertised as price. Fair enough. Asked about the yelp check-in discount and was told I was getting a discount because they didn't charge $30 for checking the brakes. As this was never even talked about as a charge before the "brake check" took place, nor was ever annotated on the itemized bill, I'd say it's safe to say they do not honor the 15% any service yelp check in discount, so don't expect to get it, as other customers have noted. Overall, got an oil change for the price advertised, and decent customer service. Not sure I'd get anything beyond basic service here, but satisfactory for an oil change, and was fair, honest work. read more

Worst place ever totally taken advantage of my car over heated & broke down I left the keys with Reggie & he said he would let me know what the problem was he told me $640 for an old 03 Mazda Protege I said I couldn't afford that so then he quoted me $530 I said fine as I was stranded & needed a vehicle he said it was a cracked radiator & replaced it the next day he told me I had another issue but it wasn't a problem when I went to pick it up on my lunch break I couldn't get it to start & the mechanic had to come out & start it I told him I was very upset after dropping $530 my car should start he said I can't believe they charged you that much. I had to get back to work & didn't have time to dispute it. After work that same day I couldn't get it to start. When I called Reggie about it he said he would send someone over to get it started as I work near his shop he never did. I had to go buy a car as it was clear my protege was shot $530 down the drain & they could care less stay away from this place!!! read more

Really friendly guys here. I've brought my car here for an oil change, wheel alignment, and state inspection on 3 separate occasions over the past year. Definitely speedy each time. If they ever see anything else that needs to be fixed while they're working on your car, they'll always give you a call first before doing anything and giving you any surprise charges. read more
