While planning for my day trip to ventura, I had come to find out the Mackenzie's had opened a 2nd location near the Camarillo premium outlets. Having been to the og one, I had to give this one a try. As a LA native, I come to appreciate the small things like the santa barbara/ventura vibes I was once a part of. I had ordered 3 tacos this time: world famous fish taco Calamari taco Shrimp taco While the seafood themselves were fresh and I could taste it with each bite, the part I felt miss the mark was how bare the shredded cabbage was that came with the taco. It does come with the wedge of lemon and mackenzie's collection of hot sauces. Don't get me wrong, I love the simplicity of a fish taco for it's freshness, but to accentuate it more with the bell peppers and cabbage you need a light dressing of sorts, maybe a vinagrette or something creamy like coleslaw sauce. The workers were professional while also having a chill and welcoming college town atmosphere. It was my First time here, I was craving fish and chips. I ended up ordering the clam chowder. Not everyone can cook really good chowder. The clam chowder was bland, but I tried the trout and chips that was actually very tasty. The flavors complimented each other. I washed it down with the Arnold Palmer Tea. The service was ok, the young man that took our order gave me the vibe that he didn't want to take our order, as if we were wasting his time. Maybe he was having a bad day, I get it we're all known to have those kind of days at work. The ambiance I loved. The restaurant was very clean, the vibe was a modern beach vibe. I bought take out at Spencer Makenzie's last night. I got an order of ceviche and an ahicado. Both were very bland. They needed more lime juice and seasoning. Both came with beautiful avocado. But the fish was pretty tasteless. The ceviche was heavy on the chunks of radish. Not as much fish as I hoped for. I have eaten here before and ordered tacos, which were fine. I cannot recommend the ceviche or ahicado. I see now that the ceviche could have been on a bed of chips with Spencer sauce. That could have helped. read more

I really enjoy their Ventura location and didn't even realize they had another spot in Camarillo until recently. The main difference is the outdoor beach vibe in Ventura, which makes for a fantastic atmosphere--bright, breezy, and relaxed. It was a nice surprise to find a different setting, but just as enjoyable. Came with a few friends, and since we weren't quite sure what to order, we went with a smorgasbord--Zucchini Tempura, Parmesan-crusted tacos (one shredded chicken, one ground beef), a grilled fish taco, and fish and chips! We all shared the fish and chips and zucchini, while I had the grilled fish taco--goodness, it was one of the best fish tacos I've ever had! I forgot how delicious it was. I've been on the hunt for a solid fish taco since I've move up from San Diego. Came here during happy hour when it was dead, glad I did because I would definitely not pay full price. Supposedly known for their fish tacos but they weren't good at all. Too much batter on the fish and it wasn't hot when it got to the table, mind you- I waited long despite the lack of customers. The fish taco was bland and the three sauces on the table were okay, but not what I look for in a sauce for a fish taco. Maybe the rest of the menu is better. A friend and I had a late lunch mid-week recently. I've been here a few times, and always thought it was a bit overpriced for what you get. This trip was good. My Makenzie signature tacos were excellent. My friend had chowder in a bread bowl. She liked hers. My friend had a beer. I had a Tropical Ice Tea. We both liked our selections. The only flaw was waiting about 30 minutes or so for our lunch. There were only a few people in the place. The server mentioned something about the bread bowl taking a long time. I have only been to the Ventura location once and this was my first time to the Camarillo one. I have to say this location's fish and shrimp burrito did not impress me like the Ventura one and it felt like a step down in quality. I felt like there was way too much cabbage and all the fish was down at the bottom of one end. No joke, I felt like I was eating a salad with how much there was in it. I did try the ceviche and it was really good. It had a lot of bell peppers and it was really fresh tasting. The chips were also tasty, crispy and thick which I appreciated. We ate on the patio and there were several flies that were bothering us and it's because there is a lot of spilled food sitting on the patio floor. So if I came back, I would eat in. Bad: The fried fish(local halibut) and chips was over battered, and tasted like it had been frozen. Table sauces are overly sweet (especially the habanero) The red salsa with the chips and salsa has way too much cumin in it. French fries or "chips" are very mediocre. Servers are kids and have no training. Food all came out in batches, cold and questionable quality and plonked on the table without much of ado. This is why I'm advocating for a better UI/UX designer and remove servers. There's zero value/reason to tip if all the server does is key in an order. I can do that with a browser. If it's rushed and he's barely interested and has no idea what beer is on tap ("it's on the menu"), why even tip? Ok. Cold food, greasy fish, sauce from a giant factory. No fresh salsa, veg was old and precut. Yuck. And why charge 4% for a service charge for credit cards on the Clover Point of Sale? Isn't that fee 2.6% shouldn't you tell everyone that BEFORE they order? Lastly, a$ 7.95 for a taco is abhorrent. Make your salsa, use fresh produce and then maybe. read more

This is a chain and kind of a cross between fast food and a sit down restaurant. The food is good, staff is great. A friend and I stopped in for late lunch and it really hit the spot. Nice place for hanging out and getting fish tacos. We had their tempura battered fish taco and also the seared ahi tuna fish taco. I really like the big portion but not sure one taco matches the price of $7.60. The tempura battered taco was my favorite and not greasy. Both had cabbage and some creamy sauce and the tempura fish came with lime. The ahi taco had a spicy sweet chili sauce kick to it. I definitely needed the cabbage on that one. I was craving the fish and chips and decided to grab a quick bite. Their portions are pretty big so we decided to share. I was half way done when my husband spotted a hair under the fish. It was disgusting. We discreetly informed the waiter. He apologized and took the plate without asking if we wanted to replace it or not, which we didn't at that point. we asked for the check and they deducted the plate but did charge the $7 beer my husband had. We are very disappointed with the situation. They never offered to replace, comp, or apologized. Management was no where to be found. Pleasantly surprised! Really enjoyed the clam chowder soup in a bread bowl and the fish and chips. I liked how the bread bowl was in a softer bread unlike the regular ones you usually eat. The top bread also has a tinge of garlic. Fish and chips weren't bad. I would have liked to have vinegar with mine, but overall really solid. Would absolutely come back again. Bought 6 fish tacos, but couldn't taste the fish. Tortillas were too crunchy and had little flavor. Went with my husband and we were both not extremely happy with the quality of food. We have had fish all around SoCal and the fish in these tacos were just not flavorful. We both had to add the salsas out on the tables to try and get some flavor back in. It's so nice having a Spencer Makenzies in Camarillo, I definitely feel spoiled. Always liked the Ventura location, it was just a little out of the way and some days overly busy. It's simple enough, you order at the counter, and then they bring the food to your table if your dining in. The girl behind the counter was super friendly and efficient. She took our orders quick and despite are pickiness with substitute this or add that she 100% got our order down quickly and correctly with a smile on her face. Good vibes, service, and friendly attitudes here. I ordered the tuna on fire which has always been my go to favorite. Simple seared ahi, white rice, and their spicy chili sauce. I'm a wimp because the chili sauce always puts my mouth on fire but it's so addicting and good. Also tried a classic fried fish taco for the first time and it was stellar! Super crisp batter and the fish was a great portion size on the taco. The secret sauce is also bomb. Probably the only thing we tried that I would pass on was the guacamole, it was a little plain and lacked seasoning but the tortilla chips were fresh and hot.
