    Tacos dorados

After passing by this Mexican restaurant so many times I finally decided to try it. I enjoyed it so much the first time that I had it again within a few days. At times there would be a lady at a cart that seems to be making fresh tortilla or taco shells. The taco salad was very tasty and the shell was crispy but not oily. The shrimp tostada was in a separate container so the shell doesn't get soggy. Tasted similar to shrimp cerviche. The tacos dorados and super quesadilla were also very tasty. They don't offer beans options, only refried beans which I'm not a fan of so I opted to get all rice. The sign outside says #2 on it so there are several throughout Ventura county so it's worth trying if there's one near you.

The service is quick. Kinda like a hole in the wall. I ordered a wet burrito and she said it wasn't spicy but my taste buds are boiling and sparking so it certainly is too spicy for this gringa. I'll order something else next time.

    They cater too!

This resto is small but I love their decor. The ladies who take your order or deliver your food are very nice. I also love their super nachos. The toppings are more than the chips which I like. They have specials that I was not aware of - and during those specials you get chips and avocado and a free drink. This is my go to place every time I crave for some nachos

Oh my goodness this was some tasty food. I'll be celebrating Hispanic heritage food here at this place. I mean these tacos y'all hit on point. 3 chorizo tacos and three asada tacos with extra cilantro y cebolla. I ate in the parking lot just in case it was nasty I'd already be in my car to go somewhere else and if it was good I could just call again and order more. These tacos were inhaled. Couldn't get a picture of the chorizo tacos because I didn't have time to fumble with my phone but once my inner hunger monster was satiated I took a picture of these asada tacos like a normal person. They have specials too! * I of course had to wake up and try their breakfast burrito the next day. Service has been pleasant. The burrito was pretty good, the potatoes are slightly too large and it needs onions and cilantro added to make it less dry. It's huge though and they have a salsa bar.

The mister wanted tacos. I reminded him we have tacos at home. He still wanted some. I tried to steer him away from unknown food in unfamiliar areas. He still insisted. Okay tacos it is. I was super hopeful with the 4 star. I was raised in Ventura County and left in early 2000. 99% of my meals were at the family dinner table. Including homemade tacos. Now this is just my personal opinion. I was not a fan of this place. What went wrong? Horchatta was watered down. Well of course it would be as it sits in one of those big ice filled jugs. Chips were stale and the carne asada tacos were mediocre. I felt so bad that the Mister did not enjoy his lunch. We have a handful of taco places in Orange County that we really enjoy. This particular place did not agree with our taste buds. The carne asada was not flavorful at all. The meat was chewy and hurt the Misters teeth from knawing on it. Service was okay. A native Spanish speaker took cuts and they helped them first. Don't underestimate if I can speak it or not. Huge menu and huge crowds. Plenty of parking. So they must be doing something right. It just wasn't right for us. P.S. stay off your phone when ordering. They don't like that.

We ordered Schooby's, which is connected to Topo and the food was also top notch. If I didn't have to work, I could have sat here all night... Worth the stop when in town if you like solid local crafties.

In this case, he went for a sampler when we were dining at Shooby's. The four options he chose were on the light side, with a hint of fruity flavors. There was only one that I really cared for - which made me long for the good old days of pizza and beer. One was too bitter for me, and the other two didn't really make much of an impression. DH did better - he enjoyed 3 of the 4. He said that none of them was a huge standout, but he appreciated that they had such a variety of choices available. Apparently, there's not much in the way of inexpensive drinking these days. The four samplers came up to a whopping $16, before tax and tip. Whew! I think the concept of having Shooby's (burgers & chicken), Rori's (artisanal ice cream), and Topa Topa Brewing Company all under one roof in Old Town Camarillo is quite brilliant. There are lots of tables available for dining and drinking. I suspect that we'll be returning to this location for casual dining and imbibing.

We expect a certain standard, a level of care that borders on obsession. So when I catch Evan Williams--respectable, questionable, but barely twelve bucks a bottle--making an appearance behind the bar, it feels like a breach of trust. A quiet betrayal under low lighting. The illusion only works if the details hold up under scrutiny... and that pour? It broke the spell. And then comes the real offense: discovering that your Old Fashioned--the crown jewel of any respectable cocktail program--are built on bottom-shelf, dust-collecting bourbon. That's not just a letdown, it's a slap in the face. A cocktail like that deserves reverence, not shortcuts. And as if to twist the knife, there it was--a massive can of red maraschino cherries sitting shamelessly atop the bar, like some relic from a dive that's given up on finesse. It wasn't just a misstep. It was disrespect. In a place claiming the speakeasy mantle, details like these matter. They're the difference between theater and parody. The cocktails did not warrant the $15 price tag. Moreover, I would have paid more had I know the class of bourbon upfront. What ultimately redeems the space is its ambiance. The low flicker of the fireplace, the soft embrace of worn leather sofas, the curated hum of music floating just above conversation--it's seductive, even soulful. The room itself is small, intimate--the kind of place where you're bound to recognize a face, or at the very least, feel inclined to invite a stranger to share the sofa and maybe a story. And then there's the setting--tucked beneath a historic relic, a basement bar built into the bones of old Americana. The building dates back to the early 1900s, echoing with a past that deserves to be honored, not phoned in. That's exactly why I expected more from the cocktails. A place with this much atmosphere shouldn't fall flat when it comes to what's in the glass. It's a mismatch--a beautiful stage, but a script that doesn't quite rise to meet it.

We ordered an iced tea ($4.00), TO Honey I'm Blonde ($7.75), Stone Buenaveza ($8.25), Limoncello Mascarpone Cake ($7.50), and the "special cheesecake" ($9.50). With $2.68 in tax, the total was $39.68 before tip. Despite the word "tavern" in the name, this place is family friendly. During our visit, there were two large group gatherings (with kids) happening at the same time. The interior is spacious but can get noisy due to the hard surfaces. However, when the weather cooperates, there are outdoor patios available in both the front and back. Although the color palette of the interior décor is dark, the space feels clean and comfortable. There's a variety of seating options--booths, tables, high-tops, and communal tables. I'm sure the pastries on the menu came from a third-party vendor, but they were really good. (Edit to follow.) * The business owner informs me that the pastries are actually made in house! They are very good--so save room for dessert. * Our server Julie was a great hostess.
