No words can describe the awesomeness that is Spice C! My son and I's favorite past time is finding little hole in the wall asian restaurants to eat at, and we nailed it here! Spice C is a small, maybe 10 table restaurant in China town. the big draw is fresh in house made noodles, shaved or hand drawn. The difference is shaved noodles are larger chunks of noodle dough, vs hand drawn are long spaghetti like noodles. Same dough, just different noodle. I went with the shaved noodle house special beef stir fry with beef and bok choy. My son had the same but went with hand drawn noodles and soup. We also started out with an order of pan fried dumplings and spring rolls. The dumplings were easily the best I've ever had. the dough was super light and airy, and you can tell the filing was just great beef. the texture on these things was almost like a mix between tempura and a regular dumpling, just insanely good. Both of our meals were just perfect. I'll for sure be back, especialy on a cold day! the only "downside" was we went to use our yelp check in for free dumplings and because we didn't tell them ahead of time weren't able to use it (not a HUGE deal). This place is EPIC. I can hardly recommend it strongly enough. In short: the food (particularly the noodles) is delicious, cheap, authentic, and comes in generous portions, and the environment is chill and comfortable. It has its negatives, too (a few). Most of the staff is not very friendly. They often give you the vibe that they don't want you to stay there for too long (which is somewhat understandable, since there are not many seats and it can get packed at busy times). Sometimes the inside can be crowded and a bit loud, too. Everything else, however, is a huge positive. I strongly strongly recommend the beef noodle soup (plus, in my opinion the amount of beef in there is a surprisingly generous portion). but really, all of their noodles are incredibly delicious; and the portions are pretty sizable. (also, you can actually watch them make the noodles in the background.) And as I said, the food is all quite affordable (e.g. beef noodle soup: like 7 bucks or so). The menu also includes a nice range of appetizers or other things that you can get along with your noodles to share with people you eat with. Plus, they have recently added reasonably priced smoothies and bubble tea to the menu. The service is pretty fast as well. the restaurant has a pretty authentic atmosphere, and is a comfortable place to go alone, with your partner, with friends, or even with a large group (they have one table there that can accomodate like 8 people or so). Also, of note, there is really a diverse range of people there - you'll hear lots of both chinese and english, and see a pretty wide range of customers in terms of race and age. Such a ripoff. When placing order, waitress asked if you want spicy? If you say yes, they added $1.40 to your bill without even telling you about the additional charge. I could have added my own hot sauce for free. It's not the $1.40 charge, it's the principle. Never heard of paying extra for hot sauce! read more

My very first visit to this place was probably around a year ago. I tell you, when I had my first bowl of ramen noodles here, I fell in love. I'm a big fan of noodles. Whether its instant noodles, pho, or spaghetti, i loved noodles. I ordered the sliced chicken hand drawn noodle soup with a medium level of their Szechuan spices added. I don't really know how to explain how good it is. Its just really that good. Sometimes, I'll take a bite, and then stare into my bowl knowing how blessed I am in that moment. Not before long, I became a regular, coming every week or so. I've tried many things on their menu and nothing has disappointed me in the taste category. Portion-wise, i believe they give a decent amount for hand drawn noodle soups, but for any stir fried dishes, expect less than you anticipate. All of the appetizers are good, especially the potstickers. Customer service is good and better compared to most stores in the area. It is definitely my go to spot in chinatown. read more

Just had dinner here today and it was okay. I had the beef brisket noodle soup and the fried dumplings. The fried dumplings were okay but I've had better. It came out lukewarm and not piping hot. The beef brisket noodle soup was good but not as good as Nan Zhou. The meat was tough, had alot of fat and tendon, and it was too chewy for my taste. The noodles were pretty good but the broth was not as flavorful as Nan Zhou. Like some of the reviewers mentioned, the decor and atmosphere is way nicer. However, if I want a good bowl of noodle soup, I'm heading to Nan Zhou. read more

Ridiculously good. A little on the pricey side for hand drawn noodles - making the broth spicy is an extra $1.50. But it's worth it. The spicy broth for the noodle soups is thick and addictively delicious. I stick with the house beef noodle soup and have yet to be disappointed. Service is fast too. read more

I mean real Noodle Soup, which is to the plebeian ramen as an Olympian triathlete is to a third grade somersaulter. We ordered the "Flirting Hot" Sezchuan broth, medium hot (watch out - unless you have a cast iron palette and are used to incendiary comestibles I suggest you settle for the Mild version). I had roast duck on mine, my husband had seafood. The main actors in the big bowl are the noodles - plentiful and delightfully chewy - and that broth. Mmmmm that broth! 28 kinds of Chinese herbs! Bring your colds and sinus infections here! Your eyes and nose will run and your belly will be delightfully topped up! The meats and veggies are tastes, decorations, the jewelry in the bowl. We went here on a Sunday night after hearing really good reviews about it, but was highly disappointed. For appetizer we got the fried calamari, spicy schzwhan chicken wings and dumplings. The fried calamari was so minuscule that it left me in awe. The chicken was so sour that it left a bitter aftertaste in my mouth. Everything I drank after that tasted bitter. After an exhausting drive from Pittsburgh my daughter and I walked around the corner from our hotel and happened on Spice C. We both agreed they were some of the best noodles we had ever had. Came here because my old go-to Nan Zhou hand drawn noodle house changed owners and it's just not the same anymore (sadness). I had the sliced beef noodle soup here and was very happy - the noodles were perfectly chewy, the beef was tender and flavorful, and the broth was decent too. Perfect for a cold winter day. I definitely prefer Nan Zhou over this place. When we went on a Saturday evening the server informed us that they were out of shaved noodles. How can you not offer shaved noodles when it's supposedly made fresh, I should have left right then but decided to try the regular hand drawn noodles. The broth tasted like the instant ramen noodles you get for 10 cents at the grocery store, the noodles the same. One positive was the server did give us scissors to cut up my kids noodles, which was thoughtful. Oh I guess there is another positive, I think, my kid did like the food, but he is 2 and also enjoys eating play-do. read more

Don't go here. It's terrible. (Just kidding. When word gets around, we'll never be able to get a table.) The shaved noodles in any soup preparation will make you very happy. I got the beef combination (flank?, tendon and tripe) and it was flavorful and warming. The spicy pig's ear is the best I've ever had. The place ain't romantic- it's narrow and all hard surfaces. Pretty good noodles- the pulled are a little thicker and chewy than Nan Zhou's I would say. A downside is a lack of consistency in broth flavors. Personally prefer Nan Zhou's more elastic noodles and broth better. read more

My adult daughter and I had lunch there. She had wonton (kreplach) in a beef broth redolent of cinnamon. She like the wonton a lot but not the broth so much because of the cinnamon. I found her dish average. I had Singapore noodles. Not a large portion for a $10 lunch price. It was fine, nothing special, no complaints. The establishment is small but clean and modern. My friend suggested me to try their place. And I will never regret trying out this restaurant. It has the best spicy noodle I have ever had and trust me I eat noodles most of my life. My personal favorite is Beef slices noodle with Szechuan Spicy base. Top it with a marinated egg and, voila!, this amazing dish will make you forget the world. Went here with my boyfriend. I got the hand shaved while he got the hand drawn, both in beef soup. I preferred in the hand shaved better. The broth was good, but definitely not a must have. I would normally give this AWESOME place 5 stars, HOWEVER, I'm a vegetarian and I always ask for the hand-drawn noodle soup with mixed vegetables, no egg, with clear broth. I do not eat meat, fish, nor eggs. So THIS time, I got my order to go as I do 7 out of 10 times that I'm there, and the broth with veggies is dark -- not clear broth. I handed it back saying I need clear broth, and the guy says, "It is clear broth." Uhhhh, the container was clear, but the broth was clearly blackish-brown. It was darker than my friend's beef broth. So the guy says, "We just put some soy sauce in it." So I say, no, take it back and bring me clear broth like I Always get. He speaks to the chef in the kitchen, and although I don't speak their language, it was obvious that he didn't put soy sauce in it. So I asked, "What did he say?" He responded, "It wasn't soy sauce, it was oyster sauce." Well, that's why I asked for clear broth, so there wouldn't be this mistake; like I said, I do not eat fish. I get this soup each and every time I'm there, so I know what it looks like. Then they come out with the clear broth, but guess what, only about a fourth of the veggies that they normally put in it -- even when I get it to-go. And the noodles were cold, but they were going into the broth anyway. Maybe we were too early, beat the lunch crowd. Solution: Order to eat it there at lunch time, not too early, and get a to-go container after I enjoy some of it there. When you sit and eat there, you get so much more than if you get it to-go! This is the only reason it lost a star. Other than today, I absolutely LOVE this place! And, yay! I'm a fan! read more

After walking out of David Mai Lai Wah for not acknowledging us for 10 minutes we waited to be seated, we decided to try Spice C. We were not disappointed. The food was fantastic. The Szechuan broth soup with Chicken and Beef was outstanding. My wife had the 3 Treasures. She would comment that she rarely finishes a meal but this was so good she finished every bite. This place has serious fraud pricing. Yesterday when I ordered one lamb noodles, the price of which is shown to be $8.3 on the menu and before serving. One waitress came up to me and asked me whether I would like to have Sichuan spicy and I replied yes. However, when I finished the noodles and ready to pay, the boss (I supposed he was) charged me $10.5. I was confused and asked him why and he said the spicy costed additional money. I was shocked; the waitress had never told me about this and there was nowhere on the menu I could find about this pricing notice. I finally ended up paying the money and did not want to argue with him. Well, following his logic, I felt to be very lucky now since he did not charge me for other ingredients put in the bowl of noodles. read more

I was there this past Saturday. A friend of mine came down from Long Island and wanted a Philly experience. So after taking her to a few tourist hot spots, we decided to eat. We didn't do cheesesteaks because trust me, I know where to get some darn good cheesesteaks outside of the city. After wandering towards Chinatown, we decided we definitely want some kind of Chinese or Asian fusion. I have to be careful with Tai food because of a peanut allergy. Anyway, we saw Spice C and the hand drawn noodles sign grabbed our attention. We walked in and it was definitely clean. Since it wasn't quite noon, we were seated immediately. I knew I wanted some kind of hand drawn noodle dish because I've seen them on tv and they always look so mouth watering. The waitress recommended the house soup which was in a beef broth and contained beef tendon as well as beef. I'm a little wary of the tendon. I opted for a duck wonton in a medium spicy Szechuan broth. My NY friend ordered a stir fry with hand drawn noodles and chicken and veggies with a light spice. We also ordered pot stickers which were as big as pierogis. Delicious!! My soup was at the right spicy level-enough to make my nose run but not unbearable. The noodles were surprisingly light. The wontons were light too and very good. My only complaint was the size of the duck in the soup. I am not used to putting pieces of meat that large in my mouth. Of course they don't give you a knife so I did my best to look feminine as I ate the duck. It was tender by the way. I would go here again and recommend it to friends.
