I feel sad to take this down a peg. I don't know if they changed chefs or didn't have time to produce the same amazing depth of flavor I'm used to. I take people here when they visit from out of town to show them great Indian food. The last visit for my wife's birthday just didn't hit the same mark. The service is still good for dine in. Still the same deli-style seating with a nice picture of the Taj Mahal on the wall. I ordered the Boise hot mughlai makhani for the first time. Wife, medium butter chicken, as usual. I thought - lamb and jumbo shrimp could be interesting when these guys do it. But the depth of spice wasn't there. The lamb was tougher than I commonly enjoy, but the shrimp was cooked well. It seemed like they took shortcuts on the sauce. The juxtaposition of the shrimp versus lamb, I guess I wasn't feeling it. Sampled my wife's dish and even that was flat as well. And the garlic naan pretty much had all the garlic loaded into the center one-third, resulting is harshly garlic to plain naan experience. Just a very lower level of good experience this time. I hope it doesn't make a trend. Experience hack - pre-cut the meats in the sauce ahead of putting it over rice to have greater exposure to sauce. I used to work next to Spice. They were always closed during lunch hours but today was my lucky day to have dinner there! Walking in, you can smell the fragrance of all the spices. It smelled very good! I grabbed myself a table. The waiter got me some water and a complimentary appetizer. It looked good! The chip was sort was savory and really light. The chutney was red and bright in color. I didn't really care for it but it was nice that they brought it out to me! For dinner I ordered the Aloo Gobi. The Indian restaurant by my house serves rice with their dish but unfortunately, Spice doesn't. So, I ordered a side of rice to go with my meal and and side of butter naan. The Aloo Gobi was great! It had the perfect amount of heat. You can taste the rich tomatoe and spices in the dish. The rice was nice and fluffy! A perfect match to the Aloo Gobi. The naan was soft and chewy! You can taste the butter on top. The only downfall about my meal was the portion. The Aloo Gobi came in the same bowl as my side of rice and half full. There wasn't a lot to this meal. It's basically potatoes and cauliflower. I got a few big pieces of cauliflower but overall it lacked in volume. I don't mind paying a good amount for food but I want to make sure I'm paying for a good size meal. Overall it was an ok dining experience. My waiter was nice but very dry. So, this place does have some great curries. The mango lassi was absolutely yummy. We got the fried cottage cheese. Dont get it. I think they microwaved it. Wasn't any sort of crunchy. Wasn't hot. We heard the microwave used more than once. So makes us think that ours, and maybe other food, wasn't actually cooked. Just reheated. I got a vegetable curry, can't remember the exact name. Was super yummy. Had potatoes and all the veggies. Some big pieces of green pepper in it. My boyfriend got a seafood and chicken curry. He said the seafood was a tad over cooked, but I can imagine it is hard to get it to cook properly with chicken. He almost put the bowl to his mouth and licked it clean. He was absolutely a fan. For his first try, he now loves Indian food. The Garlic naan. It was super garlicky. That's the best. I want it coming out of my pores. lol. I forgot about to mention, the onion chutney that they give as an appetizer, wasn't that good at all. Just raw onion with some sauce. I have been back 3 times and the food has been consistently good. It might not rank 5 stars in a big city, but doing yummy and consistent food in a convenient location with competent staff gets the high ranks here. I got the Lamb Vindaloo. I have eaten many times and absolutely loved it until the most recent time I went there. I got garlic naan and butter chicken. The naan which is usually very good, was awful. Incredible tasting curries. Me and my mother ordered the chicken vindaloo and the chicken palak, both of which were very delicious. Although not necessarily "friendly" by American standards, the staff were attentive and the atmosphere felt very authentic. Yum. This is gonna be short and sweet. The naan bread is amazing. Get all the flavors. Do not plan on sharing. You need your own portion. Not because the portions are small but because it's so delicious and you will fight your quarantine roommates for every last bite. There is no bad choice. I love the butter chicken. I had a favorite Indian restaurant from where I moved and was hoping this could match that, and it did! The naan and the Shrimp Masala were delicious. I have been spoiled by my last favorite restaurant that included small servings of Raita and Lentils to accompany the meal. I don't mind spending the extra money for the Raita because it is important to have with the meal to cool down the spice level I like, but am not sure how often I want to pay for an entire extra meal in order to have some lentils as well. Felt cheated! is all I can say. I ordered malai kofta, where kofta was so tuff that after leaving it soaked in that gravy for three days it remained inedible. The kofta (in malai kofta) is supposed to be made of cottage cheese which also makes it melt in the mouth soft, however the one provided by them was made from chickpea flour and may be some potato, which is not the case for an original recipe. I would have excused them for their flavors, but cheating the customer by replacing a malai kofta with potato-flour kofta is unforgivable! Avoid them or buy frozen curry at an Indian store. I read about this place opening up, and both my wife and I have been eager to try it. Today, we were a bit punchy from being on the road all day, kind of hangry, but not wanting much to sit in a restaurant. We decided to go ahead and give Spice a try, and get some take out. Well, we were thoroughly satisfied by our dinner tonight. I ordered the Shrimp Masala, and my wife ordered the Lamb Korma, and we ordered the both "New York Hot" (which is medium hot on their scale, between "Boise Hot" and "Bombay Hot"). Both dishes were delicious and the New York Hot level was perfect for us. Spicy enough to get your attention, but not to inflict pain. The spices that they use are so intricate and bring out so much flavor, it was just a really good dinner. We will definitely be back, perhaps very soon, since we often crave Indian food. Prior to the pandemic, this place had absolutely excellent food. The first time I visited after the restaurant reopened, the cook was different and the food wasn't very good. I went again last night and it appears the same awful cook is still there (or maybe trained his replacement). The tikka masala used to have a thick creamy, tasty gravy but the last two times it's been flavorless, watery, grainy, bitter and filled with large chunks of onion and peppers (more veggies than chicken). Also disappointed in the sides. I won't be back but I'm very sad because this used to be the best place for Indian food in the Treasure Valley. :-( read more

I've been wanting to try Indian food, and I knew they did a buffet, which allows me to try multiple things since I don't really know what I like/dislike. All of the food was pretty good-- the bread was delicious and they had, what appeared to be, a good selection of foods-- that being said, I am not well versed in Indian food so, if you are, you may disagree with me. To my Yelpie (that's yelp bestie!) Yulia's review, I too was concerned with the food temperatures. The hot food seemed to be on the "warm side" and the cold food wasn't really sitting on ice to make it cold-- however, all in all, it was overall pretty good. The inside had soft music playing, several booths and a few tables, and a friendly waiter. Again, I don't know about Indian food so I don't feel comfortable recommending this place for those who are Indian experts, but if you're new to Indian food, I do suggest that you check out the $9.99 lunch buffet. read more

We are vegetarian for the most, with exception for grass fed, pasture raised beef and free range , vegetarian fed chickens. I typically order the navratan korma and my wife loves the creamy spinach and potatoes. This kitchen knows how to blend spices that provide a savory dish. Simply put, "Spice" is the best Indian Cuisine I've ever had, ever... ever. This beautiful family started an amazing restaurant called Madhuban: it won awards, it was well established as the best Indian food in town for quite some time, and then some life events occurred and they left the original location; and then new owners took over and now that aforementioned location is a really great place to eat, but still no comparison to the original. During my squeaky anxiety filled youth I was a waiter at the original Madhuban and developed somewhat of a family friendship with the owners. I literally was around the food on a daily basis and yet I always craved their amazing recipes at the end of my shift; specifically the korma sauce. Nothing... and I mean NOTHING ever compared to the specific way they made that ridiculously delicious sauce. Imagine basically every trailer for that game Assassin's Creed... or every movie trailer about a lone warrior who has to leave his home to save the world or something like that... ya know? ...he's hiking up snowy mountains, trudging through murky swamps, dying of thirst in the vast dunes of a desert... dude... that guy was ME while this family was away... I was looking for anything to compare to how the original Madhuban owners made that friggen sauce. I lived out my tender 20's stopping into one disappointing Indian restaurant after the other. And then... Spice. Here they are kicking butt once again making absolutely stupendous Indian cuisine. On top of that, the waiters are awesome and experienced. The location is simple and cozy. And this family... if you ever have the pleasure of meeting these wonderful people you will understand the full meaning of the 'love' and effort added to every dish that cannot be replicated anywhere. Five star this place. Tell your friends. Tell your wife, tell your kids... and tip a lot. Dig deep into those pockets and give em' what you got. Gold pocket-watch? Whenever I am in a new town and want to find a good place to eat, I always gravitate towards an Indian restaurant as my first choice. When in or around the Boise area, you have a few choices but this should be high up on your list of must try at least once. Hidden in a large parking lot next to the hospital. You shouldn't have any trouble finding a space in the evening. If you want to eat at this restaurant you should probably start by making a reservation as there isn't a lot of space and you might be disappointed if there are no tables left. We were lucky as we didn't make a reservation and we snagged the last available table. The food had great flavor and we were totally full when we were finished with no room for dessert. We chose carefully so we didn't overeat. As usual, we over ordered even though we only ordered one appetizer (all tiki) and one main dish (Mughal mukhani). I'm new to Boise for the year and my husband and I regularly eat Indian food in Houston, TX so we thought we would try what Boise has to offer. This place had some five star reviews so we took the plunge. What we ordered: Vegetable samosas Chicken Curry (Boise Hot) Chicken Jal Freezi (New York Hot) Aloo Gobi (medium) My ratings on a scale of 1-10 with 1(inedible) to 10(amazing, must get everytime): Vegetable samosas- 2 Chicken Curry (Boise Hot)- 5-6 Chicken Jal Freezi (New York Hot)- 6 Aloo Gobi (medium)- 1 The vegetable samosas, though cooked, lacked flavor and seasoning and even when biting into it you can see just potatoes and peas. They use what seems to be tandoori chicken for the chicken curry which wasn't bad but the flavor seemed to be missing something to put it at a higher rank. I usually eat this with rice and even their rice didn't seem like true Biryani rice but rather a cousin to it. However, if you're craving curry this will get the job done. For the Jal Freezi this was around the same for the chicken curry with not too much of a difference in flavors. Last is the Aloo Gobi.. honestly probably one of the strangest versions of this dish I've had (and coming from a well cultured area before I've had this alot as it's one of my go to dishes when trying any indian restaurant). The whole dish tasted more like saffron and potatoes. The cauliflower, to me, I couldn't even eat because it almost had a tartiness to it. The potatoes were fine if I mixed it with my curry sauce. The smell was more of a Cajun smell vs indian spices smell. Would not order that again for sure. Since our food was takeout there's no way to comment on presentation and it's hard to distinguish them from each other. I did take a photo of what the samosa looked like inside though. read more

Solid 4 star. Not a lot of tables. We were luck to get the last table in the house, so best to make reservations! Wait staff were pleasant. I really have to just order the thing at the start of the meal! Started with the aloo tikki, and the sauces that came with it were so delicious, too! Then hubby and I shared the Mughal mukhani, Raita and Naan! Very yummy! Lamb was tender, and we asked for the Boise hot, that wasn't really hot at all. Next time, I'd order hotter. I was in Boise area on business last week, and decided to get some Indian food. I was perhaps feeling a bit homesick. I came to Spice Indian Cuisine, and found it to be a small, but nice place. It was quiet that day when I came. I ordered one thing for dinner. I ordered the Lamb Palak. This is basically lamb curry with spinach (greens). It was served with white rice. The food was quite good. I actually found it to be a bit interesting, as it was served to me with a metal plate, rather then the standard ceramic. Nothing bad, just a bit different (in India it is more common to see metal plates). In any case, the lamb palak was good. It tasted the way any good curry like that should taste. The lamb was cooked well, and was definitely not chewy. It had just the right amount of heat (spice). I wish this place well. Perhaps, when I come through on business again in Boise area, I may come back here. I travel through Boise enough on business. read more

Definitely best in the area. Portions are not very big but the taste was on point! Coming from CA to ID, I did not expect to find great Indian food, but look no further than here!!!
