$6.50 FOR PATTIES?!? It is really difficult to write this review but I need to be honest and share my experience. I am hoping that the business will use their customer feedback to improve. So I arrived on their launch day to check out the place and was immediately confused by a few things. They were using another restaurants' kitchen to serve their customers while the other restaurant was also operating. I was greeted by non-Jamaicans in a restaurant that is supposed to feel like home being of Puerto Rican and NYC descent. These two things are minor but could be off putting. I want to patronize Black-owned businesses specifically. Next up, their payment system was down and so I had to go down the block to find an ATM. Keep in mind that the person taking my order while detail oriented and kind had little restaurant experience. Fun fact: she offered to provide us a free bottle of water but the owner was about to add a bottle of water to the bill until she mentioned that we had been waiting awhile. (This was 20 minutes in to an overall 1 hour+ wait.) I would have chalked this up to new restaurant blues but they've received similar feedback in the past. I would have recommended doing a soft launch or rehearsal with friends and family before opening to the public. This would've solved 90% of their operational issues. Finally, let's talk about the food. I am not a business owner but something tells me that waiting over an hour for food is a bit much. I feel like they would've been more successful having their catering stations setup to serve quickly. I doubt that the food was made to order but I do think that because they were sharing a kitchen that there were probably too many cooks in the kitchen. The plating was great! And that was about it. There's no real seating inside. The portions were kind of small for Jamaican style cuisine. The meat tasted juicy and the plantains were fresh but the rice was ... bland... This is not what you'd expect with this type of cuisine. The baked goods were not great; they tasted as good as they looked. The apricot chocolate turnover was undercooked and had a weird flavor profile. I still have the punch in my fridge but I'm reluctant to try it. ‍ I hope they do better in the future. We need more options for Caribbean food but in the meantime I'm gonna find other spots to go to. I'll take a flyer for now. read more

This place is super authentic and I will definitely be ordering from here in the future. I went to a party that was catered by Spicy Roy's. I had the jerk chicken leg and it was super tender and flavorful. Probably the best I've ever had. They were also pretty large, so you get bang for your buck. The rice and peas were really good too, I like putting the spicy sauce over the top. The spicy sauce is sneaky - it has a nice balanced vinaigrette like taste, but then the heat slowly starts to kick in. Their medium jerk sauce is fantastic and tastes exactly like the ones I had in Jamaica. The party didn't have oxtail or plantains, so next time I'll be trying those. read more

Food review only I get this catered at my company, hence the food only review. Most of my coworkers like the jerk chicken they ate. I am vegetarian, so I got the jerk tofu. The first time it was pretty good, compared to the other places that served tofu (think bland as paper). Unfortunately, the second time was just too salty. I am wondering if they use the same marinade for the chicken on the tofu. Hint Hint Hint Hint Hint Spicy Roy! If you are reading this, please cut back your salting of the tofu marinade by 50%. Less is way more flavorful in this case. The rice and plantain were done just right. I like that they have a little side salad, otherwise the food would be too salty to eat. I AM SO HAPPY YELP LEAD ME TO SPICY ROY'S!!! I went to Jamaica a couple months ago and when I got back I really missed the food there. I knew I had to search "Jamaican food" on Yelp and Spicy Roy's and a couple other Jamaican places popped up. I tried the other Jamaican places before Roy's but once I tried Roy's I was sold. I only gotten Spicy Roy's once because they're only open on Tuesday's after 4pm and I cannot do that.. The one time I was able to go to Spicy Roy's I got the jerk chicken plate, chili, chicken patties, ackee and salt fish patties. EVERYTHING WAS SOOOO GOOD!!! Everything was very flavorful, the chicken was seasoned well and the sauce Roy gave me was spicy!!! Just the way I like it. The spicer the better. The patties were both very delicious!!! I cannot wait to try other patties Spicy Roy's has to offer. Spicy Roy has an extensive menu so there are a lot of things to choose from and he has many different patties fillings too!!! A patty is like an empanada BOMB!!! PSA: Spicy Roy's just announced that they will be on Door Dash, Uber Eats, Grub Hub, etc.. starting on January 12th!!! I definitely raised my eyebrow when I heard my roommate talking about ordering from this operation that is only open one day a week out of random places, but I shut up pretty quickly after trying out the food. This felt like a great homecooked meal, and is something I can see myself getting often, especially since they have a rotating menu. I generally preferred the meal to Back-a-Yard, but would need to get some meat entrees to confirm the differences. Coconut Curry Tofu with Vegetables - 5/5. Lots of natural flavors without being too greasy / salty. The broccoli and tofu had pretty solid texture, and I even noticed that the rice somehow tasted better than normal. I am a full-blown Jamaican, and I can say without a doubt that Spicy Roy's Caribbean Grill carries authentic Jamaica flavours in their menu items. I sampled several items, including their rice and beans, Jerked Chicken and Oxtails and salad meal; a beef patty; Jerked Chicken Quesadilla; coconut custard cake, and sorrel. I was pleased to have very fresh vegetables for my salad, accompanied by a unique house-made salad dressing, and my proteins had their sauces, ranging from sweet to very spicy. I left the restaurant with a taste of home and a wish that he'd open up a location in the Midwest so I can have better tasting Jamaican food near me. I was also impressed by the overall attempt to diversity the food to infuse Mexican cuisine into our Jamaican favourites. Lastly, I was impressed by the Jamaican excellence that greeted me even before getting to the restaurant, in that there's an app that that gives all the info that you need about the restaurant, dishes, owner, menu item supply (which indicates what menu items are not available, so won't hear the popular Jamaican restaurant line, that "we nuh have dat!" Spicy Roy's is exceptionally good food. Let me tell you about it. Here's what my partner and I ordered: coconut tofu curry, chicken and waffle, Spicy Roy's pumpkin soup. The coconut tofu curry was so good. Along with the tofu were big beautiful chunks of coconut meat. Scrumptious! The meal came with coconut rice and beans, fried plantains, and jerk corn on the cob. I will say, the jerk corn wasn't my jam. Otherwise, everything was perfect. I only wish there would have been more of the curry and less of the rice, but if my only complaint is that I wanted more, that's not really a complaint! The chicken and waffle was also very good. All this per my partner: the waffle was slightly sweet and that was really nice. He got the pomegranate syrup and it was a good mix of tart and sweet--not overbearing like some maple story. The chicken breading was also yummy. He enjoyed the spicy green sauce as well. I tried a piece of the waffle with some syrup, and I was a fan, too! Finally, the Spicy Roy's pumpkin soup was also quite good. My partner ordered it for himself because we thought from the name that the soup might be spicy, but it actually wasn't, so I enjoyed some too! I will definitely order again! It's a bit underground and you might need to find him on FB or IG to find out where he's serving next and how to place an order; it rotates around from place to place by day of the week and generally takes payment by Venmo or Paypal with orders placed a day in advance, though I know some last-minute walk-up orders are possible sometimes. This is a true up-and-coming small business, so support a rising star chef while you can. Food is amazing - I've ordered for my family perhaps a dozen times in the past 6 months and Fitzroy is very consistent. His jerk sauce is amazing and everything he cooks is crafted from high-quality ingredients with love. Just chatting with him as he dishes the order is sometimes the best treat - this chef is all good vibes, all around. For my kids who don't handle heat too well, I can usually find an item that works such as the coconut curry tofu; for adults who want it, he's got heat and flavor to bring in the jerk sauce such as jerk chicken or oxtail. His desserts are a special treat, and plantains and corn on the cob with almost every entree are a winner for me. I can often get leftovers out of a meal if I'm not too voracious for it on first go. Aside from all of this, I've had the pleasure to meet the chef personally and his family - you are supporting some real honest neighborhood activists here in the best way. I've had Spicy Roy's food a few times now and had a variety of the different dishes they have to offer and not a single one has let me down. The jerk chicken is not dry and has that delicious grill flavor! The OX tail is by far the best I've had in the Bay Area. The rice and beans have great flavor. Their salads are amazing. I had a dressing that had hints of orange. I've never had anything like it. The barbecue sauce is by far one of the best I've ever had. The tofu is amazing. Roy's was set up outside of the Campbell Strike Brewery taproom tonight and it was a GEM. The food was fresh and delicious, but what shined brighter was the generous nature: a homeless man approached and without question they gave him a full meal, and an awesome bystander bought him water as well. Seeing humanity do good things totally unprompted is heartwarming and it feel good to support a business that fosters that kind of attitude. read more
