I love coming here, so I'm not sure why this place only has 3.5 stars. Most of these complaints are about service, but I've never had a terrible time with this place, whether I was dining in or ordering out. To start off, they've definitely got a nicer interior than some of the other Thai restaurants in the area (on the block?). It's perfect for a casual lunch, and even though it doesn't look huge they make the most of the space that they have. One of my favorite things abou this place is their LARGE iced tea. It's actually huge, and it doesn't come with a huge mark-up in price. I can't speak to the authenticity of this place, but I do know that they make crispy calamari and a tasty beef pad see ew (my go-to order). I discovered recently that they also have a great dessert - the creme brulee cheesecake! They brulee the top of the cheesecake so it has that classic crunch, and the cheeecake under that is soft and creamy. It also comes with some chocolate drizzle and some sort of fruity preserve. I really hate to be this person because the food is very good but every time I order for delivery there is an error. One order they forgot my Thai iced tea and another time they gave me something completely different from what I ordered. When I called to complain they said to basically get a refund from seamless. We absolutely love Spicy Shallot. We have always ordered pickup or takeaway and the food is always on point. Favorites are the Crab Rangoon and Spicy Basil Noodles or Fried Rice. But we've also experimented with other dishes and can recommend the Pad Thai, Thai Fried Rice and Khao Kluk Kapi. The management and staff are always pleasant so it's an overall good experience. I've been to Spicy Shallot a couple of times and I'm not CRAZY about it but if you go you MUST try the crispy duck noodle soup. It is TDF (to die for)!!! It is so packed with flavor!!! Absolutely DEEERICIOUS!!! The first time I tried it, I couldn't stop drinking the soup! Now that, I am CRAZY about!!! The atmosphere is very relaxing, and intimate. Great place to go if you're going on a date. The lights are dim and it's a small place. ALSO, if you check in onto facebook or foursquare, I believe you get 5% off your whole check. I was brought to the SPICY SHALLOT 6-years ago by my best friend and i have not stopped coming here. For as long as they are open I will be a frequent visitor. The food is fantastic and the prices far more than reasonable. Some of my favorite dished would be The Monster Roll. A fried sushi roll loaded with shredded crab meat on top. Very Yummy especially for the non raw sushi eaters like my sister. The Trio Roll is just as good with a little more spice. The house soup that comes with the lunch special held till 4pm is flavorful to say the least as if an entire meal with a drink for $10 was not enough to make me a repeat client. The staff is very friendly and attentive. to anyone who asked for my GO TO thai for there is no other place that comes to mind. I've been going to this place for years ! I used to order a lot of delivery from them a few years ago I moved farther away so now I go whenever I'm craving their lettuce wrap. We dropped by about 2 weeks ago, we ordered a lot. I always do this but I wanted it paced out. I wanted the Curry puff, wings, calamari, fries and lettuce wrap to come out first then the fried rice, seafood lemongrass soup and papaya salad to come out later once the first was done. I told our server exactly what I wanted first and told him I would let him know when I'm ready for the rest he was so nice and attentive and all around amazing (which is an improvement from the previous service which is why I stopped going for some time the young ladies before were very rude every visit) so great improvement there. The decor and seating arrangements have changed and for the better. It looked so beautiful! We started with our drinks thai iced tea, thai iced coffee perfectly chilled and perfect amount of sweetness. I always get the Thai iced tea give it a try I highly recommend! Their curry puffs are a must have !!! Perfect crunchy outer layer and nice savory filling with a yummy sweet dipping sauce which has some onions and cucumbers which give it a nice crunchy texture as well. The lettuce wrap which was my first love there is yummmy the chicken is so flavorful and then with the chili for spice, ginger/onion for flavor, nuts for crunch and then the lime for acidity popped right into your mouth is so good !!!! I love that they leave the lime skin on and cut them into cute little pieces it's so much more robust in the flavor. The kimchi fries were good the fries itself still had that crunchy texture even with all that goodness drizzled on top the kimchi flavor is not so heavy but I did not mind. The calamari was yummy nice crunch nicely seasoned not bland at all the sweet sauce was perfect. Then this is when I got kind of annoyed, another lady who was not our server brought out our dishes when She literally just brought out all my appetizers ?!?!?! This totally ruined my experience because I wasn't trying to stay there for two hours or anything but 20 mins in and I have all 10 dishes on my table. When I told her our server knew to not fire yet until I finished my apps her reasoning was "when it gets busy later it will take long time for my food to come out" in my head I'm thinking I don't mind waiting later on, I don't think it would take more then 20 mins for a fried rice, soup and salad later even during the rush, and now while I'm trying to finish my apps my mains are getting cold. This really ruined my entire meal. What I was hoping would be a nice enjoyable 1 hour and 20-30 min dinner date night turned into a 45 minute dining because my bf was pissed off and just wanted to pack everything and leave. I can see now why the other table was holding onto their menu and only ordering what they wanted then placing orders again when they were ready. I will do that next time now that I know. I can tell the server did not know as after she dropped he went and spoke to her confused. My friends took me here (both of whom are Thai and work at Thai restaurants, so I always trust their Thai restaurant choices), and I was really impressed. The place was packed, which I took as a good sign. I'm usually a pad see-ew/pad thai kind of guy, but there were so many things on the menu here that I had never seen before that I definitely had to try something new. My friends had already decided on two appetizers before we got there: the Thai spicy pork sausage and the Japanese Pearl Harbor. The sausage, peanuts, ginger, lime, and chili are to be put on a lettuce leaf and wrapped, and made for a really interesting flavor and texture combination. The Pearl Harbor (which I think is an absolutely inappropriate name for the dish), was amazing. It's a flaming mix of various seafoods in a sort of casserole. Delicious, and I'd say it's worth getting just to see how it looks. I felt overwhelmed by the menu simply because it was so expansive, my friend recommend me the bean curd noodle soup. Service was a little slow, but when my dish finally arrived, I couldn't believe how many different things were in my bowl. I didn't even know what half of it was! There was the bean curd, calamari, jellyfish (I think), shrimp, fish balls, and it took me a while to even find the noodles at the bottom of the bowl. The server was really nice and offered to bring it back if I didn't like it because apparently most Thai people don't like its fishy broth, but I actually thought it was really delicious. I requested their largest size Thai iced tea with an additional cup to share with my party (pretty obvious we are sharing). Due to the large cup and respect I have for the restaurant - I requested a waiter to help me pour it into the cup.... They simply denied stating it was " a restaurant policy". Once again all I asked was to help me pour my massive iced tea into a smaller cup to avoid making a mess. The waiters are programmed like robots to deny any form of requests "DUE TO POLICY". This is what separates 5 star experiences from greedy restaurants who want to profit a few bucks on customer purchasing 2 smaller sized beverages . The manager walked over, looked confused, and reiterates "it's the policy. No where to be found but on the street - smoking a cigarette ( hopefully he washes his hands). No customer service- no sympathy towards their customers. Food was great- service was trash. Will not be coming back and will be warning my co-foodies and neighborhood Facebook groups as well. I've been going to spicy shallot for over 4 years now, and I always recommend this place to my friends. Customer service is good because they're always very present, checking in here and there to check if the food is to my liking and if I need anything else. Noodles The first time I ate here, I tried Pad Thai with chicken and shrimp. It was perfect because the taste of the fish sauce and tamarind pulp was very subtle unlike many other places that serve pad thai. So the pad thai is good but I also recommend the pad see ew noodle with beef and shrimp because that noodle is probably the best noodle they have at the place I'd say. Fried Rice After my noodle phase, I had discovered how delicious their fried rice was. Initially, I tried their thai fried rice with beef but the beef was way too dry and chewy. So I had their spicy basil fried rice with chicken and it was THE BEST fried rice I have ever had- at the time. It was so flavorful. However, over the last 2 years, their portions for fried rice got smaller and the flavor also isn't as amazing as it was before. Additionally, the chicken in the fried rice is not seasoned anymore- kind of pointless to order the rice with chicken at that point. Maybe they got a different head chef? Regardless, I deducted one star for that Salmon Clay Pot I've tried their salmon clay pot before. It comes with white rice and taro, and it's extremely tasty. Definitely a must-try for salmon lovers because the texture of the salmon is buttery which is probably my number one indicator for good salmon. Volcano Crispy Chicken I would also recommend the Volcano chicken because it's one of their most popular dishes. The chicken is sour and sweet and I like to add some extra spice to it. It is served with white rice but you'll probably need to order extra white rice on the side. Sushi Spicy Shallot serves Thai/Japanese food so I had to try the sushi. The sushi here is average, I've had better. I tried their Volcano Roll and it was not as good as I expected it to be- 6/10. I tried the Monster roll because spicy tuna is my go-to but I was also not too happy with the fact that you can't even tell if this is spicy tuna or regular tuna. I wouldn't recommend getting sushi from this place just because I'd rather spend that money on something else that they'd make much better. Minus one star for that Drinks I LOVE the thai iced tea at spicy shallot. It's actually really really good and it gets better when we talk about sizes. Their large is just 3 dollars more than the regular size and it comes in a huge jug that can probably be shared by 3-4 people. I'd recommend getting it with less ice because they use a lot of ice and by the end of your meal the drink tastes watered down. But if you are ever eating at spicy shallot you HAVE to get the thai iced tea. I'd recommend their mojitos as well. Desserts I've tried EVERY SINGLE ONE of the desserts here and they're all so so tasty. The molten lava cake which is served with the perfect level of warmth and vanilla ice cream on top. I would recommend the fried ice cream which comes in the vanilla or the green tea ice cream flavors. The green tea ice cream is a little bitter but I'm used to having my green tea like that. I just think it's a bit of an acquired taste so I'd have to recommend trying the vanilla fried ice cream instead of green tea if you're not used to green tea. The best dessert here, and my all time favorite, is the sticky coconut rice. It comes warm and it's so perfect I legitimately think everyone needs to try this. I was disappointed. I had a craving for crab rangoons and coconut rice. Neither was worth the money I paid. I got coconut rice, Duck salad, a salmon roll and crab rangoons for take out. The best I could say is Meh. The duck salad was tasty, but half of the pieces of duck were all fat. The salmon roll was good, but the container of soy sauce was too small to fit a piece in to dip. The coconut rice was regular rice with fried pieces of coconut added, not the delicious sticky rice made with coconut milk. The crab rangoons were awful. 6 tiny doughy things -- not wontons, not crispy. AND it was 10 dollars for those 6. I'd be happy to pay 10 dollars for proper, crispy crab rangoons, these should have been 50 cents a piece they were so tiny. I am still on the search for good crab rangoons in the area. This is my favorite Thai restaurant in Elmhurst, yes, better than the hyped-up Ayada across the street. Everyone I've taken here (from meat-eaters to vegans) has loved it! More of 3.5 star, but I rounded up. When in doubt, I always order from Spicy Shallot. Depending on my mood, my rotation include: Pad See Eww (Veg/Tofu), Yen Ta Fo (seafood pink noodle soup), Pad Kee Mao Udon and always the Crab Meat Rangoon (appetizer) as well as the Thai ice tea. Ordering for pick up here is never a problem. I will always try to time it just right (20 mins) so that we don't have to wait too long in the restaurant. I've eaten here a few times many moons ago, but I can't recall too much to comment on it. The delivery service is arduous though - I really mean it. Ordering for delivery from here would take at least an hour and we would have to call every time that 1 hour hits. It's probably also my fault because I get lazy sometimes to walk less than a block to pick up my food. However, food is great here and my order is always accurate which is why I think it is fair to round the stars up. read more

Our first visit here was Saturday night. I was surprised to find yet another Thai/Japanese place so close to us. My husband is a big fan of trying all places "new" or at least, "new to him". I'm a creature of habit, so he isn't often indulged. This weekend we hit several places; this was first. I had my usual of Thai iced coffee and Thai fried rice with shrimp. They were exactly what I've come to expect from every other Thai place I've eaten in before. Mind you, I'm not saying it was in any way bad, just routine. We split a house salad with peanut dressing to start which also seemed very routine to me. My husband had the duck pad Thai and seemed to enjoy it alongside his pomegranate sake based drink. The staff were very polite and handled the quickly filling space in a timely fashion. I should say it got INCREDIBLY loud as it got full. The bf has always been a fan of this place for their decor, proximity, price, and late night foods. Once of the best things about Spicy Shallot is their massive Thai Iced Tea Extra Large drinks. It's been consistently humongous and delicious, just don't think about the calories. In Woodside, Jackson Heights, and Elmhurst, there is never a shortage of Thai restaurants. It's easy to fall into complacency and forget what you're up against. As far as we can tell, this place has always been good at a decent price. It's not one of the cheaper ones, but it's not overpriced for what you get. Their offerings are typical of Thai restaurants from fried tofu, to pad see ew, pad thai, etc. What's different here is they also offer some sushi items and decent mojitos/alcoholic drinks. The first time I went to Spicy Shallot, they didn't have a Japanese menu, and I'm not sure if its addition is good or bad--I did have some delicious spider roll this time around. The portions are large and the food was good. Crispy dumplings for apps are a must! Not a big fan of the soggy duck in my curry, but the curry itself was delish... as was the soft shell crab pad thai. The other thing to try was the thai iced tea friend ice cream... i mean, COME ON! where else can you get that?! Worst place ever!!! A three blocks of my house and they took almost 2 hrs for the delivery. According to them the delivery guy came but i was waiting for almost 2hrs for the food he didn't ring my bell. i have to call back to the place when they came was almost 2hrs and the food was cold.
