South side has very limited options for decent Thai food, just my opinion! This place is an authentic Thai place kinda divy, offers a dining area and even slot machines. However they have private parking. And the place was indeed busy, I was a little hesitant at first seeing that they are slammed with walk in, to go orders and phones. Everything though worked out better than we expected. George is awesome! Now I'm a weekly customer here. I recommend the panang curry, Kung pao shrimp, pad Thai of any protein, basil fried rice and I try something new each visit. I discovered this place on yelp and found out, after doing a little research, that this is one of the only restaurants in the Chicagoland area that serves Lao cuisine. I already enjoy Thai food, but I'm always interested to try other types of cuisines. We ordered fresh chicken spring rolls, fish cakes, shrimp pad thai, som tum, and beef pad tamin. I normally don't order this much food, but I wanted to try a lot of things. Their fresh spring rolls are more like the Vietnamese style fresh spring rolls, large and wrapped in translucent rice paper. They were still good, but don't expect the typical Thai fresh spring rolls that are smaller in an opaque wrapper. The fish cakes were also different in flavor and texture. You can tell they were made from scratch by the texture and consistency of the fish cake. The pad thai was on the saucy side and the shrimp were quite small for the extra $2. The som tum salad was very good. It was a large portion and was very flavorful. I also enjoyed the beef pad tamin. I asked for it mild and it still packed a bit of punch and it was filled with many different flavors and textures. We got the mango with sticky rice for dessert, which is always amazing. There are a few more items on the Lao menu that I still would like to try, so I will be back. I couldn't really determine exactly all the different herbs, spices, and veggies that were used in the beef pad tamin and would love to learn more about the dish. They were unfortunately extremely busy during lunch, so there wasn't a good time to even ask. Maybe next time (or some dish descriptions for the Isan Lao menu)! They are so accommodating when it comes to special orders. George is so easy to talk to. And the customer service is unmatched. Our visit started out on the wrong foot. The ramp into the restaurant hadn't been swept of snow and was very slippery. The manager was "busy," chatting in a booth with friends. The entry had no vestibule, so I imagine the front tables are rather cold in the winter. The place had a casino, which suggests to me the food sales couldn't support the rent. Poor maintenance was suggested by the many burned out light tubes and messy storage area. I wondered how clean the kitchen was. We ordered the Thai Beef Soup, which had a great flavor and abundant beef, however little broth. My wife had the sesame chicken, which was ok, but a poor choice for 2nd day leftovers. The manager apologized for not bringing my Lad Nar, informing us the person who took our order didn't actually work at the restaurant. The Lad Nar was good; the noodles soaked up the Thai sauce. I am in heaven! We just got home from an amazing dinner at Spicy Thai Lao. I can honestly say the service was the best I've had in a very long time. Our waiter was couteous, took the time to explain how the heat levels differ from other places since they import the peppers. I was especially thankful for this since I love spicy but can't have much for health reasons. We ordered an appetizer, soup and 2 entrées. The flavors... I cannot even describe how amazing they were. I've come to the conclusion after this meal that until tonight, I'd never eaten real Thai food. The portions are generous with us having plenty for lunch tomorrow. Spicy Thai Lao is a very small restaurant. Just five to seven tables depending on configuration. If they get busy quickly then there will be a slowdown in the kitchen and you may end up waiting a bit longer for your food. With that said, this place absolutely knocked my socks off! A small operation of just two to four employees at any one time. Seems like it's family run but that wasn't real clear. The kitchen is at least twice the size of the seating area but I'd guess they need that food prep area to accommodate the huge menu of items they offer. Just the giant bowls of soup had eight options available and each section was a very diverse selection of dishes found throughout Thailand and not limited to just one region of flavor. We over-ordered knowing full well it was too much food. Each of us took enough soup and entree dishes home to equal two to three additional meals. For 12 years the best Crab Rangoon I've found from coast to coast in the US and including visits to the Asian dense areas of western Canada, was close to home. Cida Thai in Countryside / LaGrange, Illinois has been at the top of my list with a restaurant on Vancouver Island BC coming a close second. Spicy Thai Lao now takes my top prize for Crab Rangoon! Very light wrappers with a cream cheese mixture of crab, onion, ground white pepper, and some light flavorful spices. These things were fantastic without any sauce. This was the perfect way to start our meal and good dishes just kept rolling out. The Spicy Thai Lao Egg Roll was a veggie option and almost black on the inside. Some spice and again a depth of flavor. It surely tasted better than it looked. Soups. Huge bowls of soup. With the normal menu plus the daily specials we had eight options available. We chose two different soups on opposite spectrums. The basic Chicken Won-Ton was full of freshly made dumplings and a number of herbs and spices including cilantro. The Thai breakfast soup called Kow-tome was full of fresh herb and citrus flavors (I couldn't figure out what the citrus fibrous things were) with rice in a basic broth. We got the mild version as I'm an excessive spice wimp. Both soups were great choices. Of the two entrees we ordered the most complex one was the Drunken Mama Noodle Stir Fry and at their top spice level. There were lots of different veggies within a mixture of typical pan-fried noodles from most any Asian restaurant. It was quite spicy but not a real spice depth or lingering spice. The other entree was a mild Chicken Pad Thai. Pretty average with Thai restaurants but considering how good everything else was this was enjoyable. We'll be back for sure. Possibly to try a quick lunch visit and see how they handle a limited menu with a fast turnaround. I'm impressed so far and I hope they continue to provide knowledgable service and great food with an interesting depth of flavor. read more

Stopped in here for lunch since we were in the area. Kow-Tome - I agree with Mike O. that is had more of an herby taste. It wasn't bad though and I would order it again. My guy went with the Pad-See-Ewe Beef lunch special. I think he went with mild, but next time we'll go with medium or spicy. Veggie egg roll was good. Drink was okay. I thought any entree qualifies for the lunch special, but I think the lady said only the noodles. Maybe it's just a communication problem. I went with the masuman curry and thought it was pretty good. I went with mild, but will go with medium next time. This has always been my go to Thai place. Yesterday the food was bad. Pad Thai was sour and nasty. I barely ate any of it. Ordered a spicy chicken cashew fried rice and it was just medium and the chicken was over cooked and bland. Either the chef was having a bad day or they had a new chef. I do hope things go back to normal as I don't want to find a new place for my Thai food cravings. I'll give them one more chance I guess. read more

I absolutely LOVE Thai food, so while I was in Chicago on a family trip, I ordered from Spicy Thai. I ordered Pad See Ew, Panang Chicken, Mango w/Sticky Rice, and a Thai Iced Tea . The Pad See Ew was unfortunatley very greasy, the Mango w/ sticky rice was a pitiful looking serving, and the taste was okay. The Thai Iced tea was VERY sweet. It was so sweet it had the consistency of syrup. Thai Iced Tea is pretty hard to mess up, I'm not sure how they manage to do that. The Panang was the best thing I had; flavorful and yummy. Upon entering, Ziggy, the charming and incredibly knowledgeable host/waiter, greeted us with a smile. We instantly felt welcomed. He explained his Thai background and the history of the restaurant. My group and I thought we knew Thai food, but this menu was quite extensive. Obviously, he knew what he was talking about when he made recommendations. We started with Crab Rangoon and the Tom Kha soup. Now, I have had both of these items at other places, but the freshness and the flavors here were off the charts! There was a little sweetness to the Rangoon and the soup was a great marriage of flavors....lemongrass, creamy coconut milk and lime leaves. Our generously sized lunch specials were delicious and served with homemade Thai eggrolls. I ordered the spicy chicken eggroll. It was filled with a wonderful mixture of chicken and veggies in a thai curry paste. Wow!!! The variety and freshness of the flavors during our meal danced on our tongues and left us wanting more! So insanely good.....we ate here twice in one day! We stopped for lunch before we met up with friends for an event. We told them all about the amazing experience we had at the restaurant. Our event was over 6 hours later and knowing that Spicy Lao Thai is open until midnight, we all decided to stop in for a snack. This is a place I have been meaning to go to for a couple of years, but didn't get a chance because it's rather far from where I live. I finally made it out there a couple of Saturdays ago and I was not disappointed! I lived in Thailand for almost 4 years so when I find a place that is a taste of real Thai homestyle cooking I cannot be any more happy. First they have Beer Lao, which is not easy to find, secondly the papaya salad was fantastic, along to a beautiful Isaan beef dish, the name escapes me.
