Lester helped me with pretty much everything. Loading/Unloading management, parking my pods on street and helping me secure it, helping me with my packages when I was away, and regular maintenance requests. Lester goes over and beyond to help tenants. Stephanie is very good with turn around times, she is professional and straightforward. Property itself is very quiet. Noise regulation rules are pretty nice. Property is walking distance away from Menlo Park downtown. The area is pretty walkable. I had a patio which was a very nice addition. Property rate is very reasonable given that it comes with gated parking. The only complain I have is the additional door in front of elevator's slider door. It makes moving i and out of the apartment hard. Apartment has carts, so that makes it easy to carry groceries. Overall I would give this property a 4.7/5. I stayed in this apartment for one year. I would recommend avoiding this apartment. The management…read moreis quite disorganized and never available, there was a thief stealing packages for months (who lived in the building!), the units have poor sound insulation, and the building is just very old. When you tour the apartment, don't let them fool or impress you with the thin veneer of renovation that they have done. On the day we moved in, the apartment was dirty, and there were clear signs of the previous occupant. Moreover, the microwave was severely dented and would not close properly (a health hazard), and the bathroom fan was broken. We immediately requested that the management fix microwave and the bathroom fan. However, it took them more than six month to fix the microwave. The bathroom fan was never fixed. Generally, anytime something broke down in the apartment (which was often-- this is quite an old building), it took an inordinate amount of time and effort to fix. I learned to contact them as little as possible. The sound insulation is quite poor in the building in general. You can hear people in the hallway when inside the apartment. They can also hear you. You can hear the clacking of our upstairs neighbors when they walked on top of us. It was much louder than I am used to. Worst of all, we could hear the snoring of our neighbor (through the wall!). This is not a normal apartment building. There was a thief who was stealing packages for months in the building. We had an Apple product stolen from us, which was delivered to our door. Later it was found that the thief lived in the building. By the third month of my stay, I was desperate to leave. If you care about your sanity, avoid this apartment.

Before, during, and after the lease-signing, Jessica Nelson, the Palo Alto Place Community Manager, was exceptionally helpful! She meticulously responded to all of our questions in a timely fashion during the weeks prior to the move, and was so friendly and professional in person when we met her after moving. Moving across the country was especially challenging with all of the travel restrictions, but Jessica helped us pull it off with grace! We are so thankful for that! The apartment is large, spacious, and well-appointed. We look forward to settling in and taking advantage of the gorgeous pool, which is up to 6 feet deep!

I lived at Southwood for nearly five years, from January 2018 until October 2022. Initially, it was…read moremostly fantastic. The biggest issue I had was that they were doing construction work when we moved in. They said it'd be done in "around two weeks" but it actually took nearly two years to complete. Back then, they had a guarantee that maintenance requests would be handled within 48 hours, and the on-site staff (one maintenance person and one leasing office person) would usually fix any issues on the same day. Once COVID happened, everything changed. Staff were no longer onsite and maintenance suffered as a result. Even once COVID restrictions were lifted, Equity Residential decided to have one leasing office staff member split across three or four of their properties, rather than one per property. Maintenance is no longer on-site, and fixes that used to be done in less than a day now take weeks. Water bills went up significantly due to things like the pool/spa leaking water non-stop for over a week. They started a big modernization project right as I was moving out, to remodel the apartments. This is great since the apartments looked pretty dated inside, but I think part of it was just an excuse to increase the rents even higher. It's a good location, and the park directly behind the property is nice. I used to walk my dog there all the time. However, that doesn't make up for Equity Residential reducing service while increasing rents.

Since that time my rent has increased 350$ each year of living here. Both Sam and Angela, the onsite staff, have been fired. In addition, they stopped accepting my electronic rent checks, without any explanation or way to fix it and have started charging an extra 132$/month just to pay a rent check. Yes, you have to pay a monthly surcharge to pay rent here. To top it off, the water and garbage bills are exorbitant. Because it's shared between the other 100 or so residents, the bill is never less than 200$/month and that doesn't include the electricity/gas bills. When all is said and done, I'm paying almost 5000$/month to live here! It's a great location but the building is old as are the appliances. Not worth it anymore.

Wish I could have stayed, but I was transferred to San Francisco area. Palo Alto and this neighborhood are a perfect little bubble of comfort and convenience. When the whole world is going crazy, everything feels just fine here. Not so much as you get closer to the city. People aren't as nice and a lot a sketchy stuff is all around you. Even the unsheltered in Silicon Vally have RVs. It;s a special place!

My favorite part of this apartment (one of the tallest buildings in Palo Alto) were the incredible views of the mountains and greenery from my apartment (see photo). Additionally, the pool area/courtyard with blooming flowers, well-landscaped trees, and swinging hammocks was a relaxing oasis especially during COVID-19. The lush lobby has a Stockwell vending machine, luxury-style seating and calming wall waterfall. Lastly, Cathy at the front desk is always friendly, helpful, and warm, contributing to a great homey environment. Catalina and Marlon also do a great job maintaining and improving Tan Plaza. This apartment complex is a great biking (or driving) distance from campus and conveniently located close to San Antonio Shopping Center (Trader Joes, Target, etc). Additionally, Briones Park across the street and Arastradero Preserve and various walking trails were easily accessible as well. In addition to the secured parking area, overnight street parking on Clemo and/or Arastradero is also free and easy. There are a few minor inconveniences with slow elevators and occasional water shut-offs but these didn't bother me much.

Things I love: Location, location location: really close to Google campus, close to Castro for evening dinners and really close to many parks and cycle trails. Spacious: the unit is very spacious with two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a large living area. The kitchen is a little small but that wasn't really a priority for me. Pet friendly: Maplewood is dog friendly which is perfect for my little pooch who has loved it here too. Bills: There is only the one electric bill to pay as everything else is covered in utilities. Responsive: the Maplewood team are not always in the office but they have a new cool online system that you can post requests to and someone usually gets on it right away.

We really love living in this area and especially in these apartments, it has always felt homey to us. and now more than ever since the new management took over we haven't had any issues. The ladies in the office have gone above and beyond for our every needs. They have been helpful and super friendly towards us, we look forward to seeing them around. Not to mention how fast Denise was to make a work order for maintenance when we needed something fixed. Sebastian took care of our dishwasher very quickly and proficiently..
