The food is usually very good but the service is unpredictable. The variety of the menu is great: pizza, anti pasta, delicious meat specialties, fish, pastas- families with picky eaters will find something to eat here. Plus they serve the traditional American Italian dishes- chicken parmigiana etc. However, they do not take reservations for tables under 4 so if you don't want to wait you may be eating during the kids hour. Regarding service, my husband and I were served our entree less than 1 minute after the appetizer and that was before the large table next to us received their drinks. We paid when they got their appetizer. So not a great date night. Another family dinner my son got so hungry after waiting an hour for his penne with butter we had to leave. Spiga is a fine Italian ristorante more than a pizza place! The decor is very upscale but fits today's casual dining perfectly. Our meals were delicious, and the waiters were very attentive and friendly. My husband and I rarely order two full meals- usually ordering a soup or salad and a couple small plates, but the specials menu was so good and we also wanted to try the lasagna- so we splurged! I ordered the red snapper special with avocado, olives, tomatoes and a lemony wine sauce served over a bed of sautéed spinach. (I'm not doing this dish justice with my description and I forgot the name!) It was a piece of food art coming out of the kitchen- the egg-battered filets stacked 3 high- wow! I felt like I was in an Italian restaurant in Sorrento! Sooo good- Now we mustn't forget the lasagna ( with meat sauce)... Absolutely delicious- not too heavy on the cheese and the sauce was very flavorful. In fact we'll get to enjoy it again for lunch tomorrow because we finished off my amazing snapper dinner- and I guess I forgot to mention we had the special corn crab chowder for starters. My wife and I planned to go for sushi until we found out that the place we wanted to try was only doing takeout. So we called an audible and went to Spiga right down the road. We saw some negative things about service in some of the comments, but we were taken care of the entire time we were there. Our servers always checked in on us and the food was absolutely amazing. We started with the Portuguese Grilled Octopus and it was the best octopus we have had anywhere hands down. It comes with fried cappy, roasted fingerling potatoes, and a yogurt sauce. It was absolutely incredible. My wife tried their GF pizza because she heard great things about it and she was not disappointed and I had the filet of sole encrusted in parmesan which was fantastic as well. I used to come to this place all the time, we loved it. Until tonight....service was borderline horrible. The worst part was our waiter refusing to reduce the price of one of the entrees because we ordered it WITHOUT lobster. Yet they still made us pay full price, claiming it's because of "the labor it takes to remake the sauce." TOTAL BS. On top of this, it took over an hour to get our food and we did not see our waiter for a hour after we ordered. Had to ask multiple people for WATER. All but one of our party of 6 got their meals, and it took an extra 10 minutes for the last. Tables around us that came after we did, received their entrees before us!!! The only thing they could do was take off a glass of wine after they had already spilt a drink all over one of my friends. And after we brought all of this to the managers attention, the only thing he could say was "Merry christmas." The waitress visibly rolled her eyes after we asked for water. Needless to say, we are finding a new italian joint. Perfect example of a restaurant taking advantage of younger customers and not giving the same service they would an older group. This is a professionally run operation with good service, a large menu and excellent food. We had the lunch special and it was wonderful. Sorry to hear a couple people had unhappy experiences since our three times have been wonderful. The large menu offers classics and creative dishes. Ours were excellent. The grilled lamb chops with wild mushrooms, roasted asparagus and roasted potatoes is a must as is the grilled octopus, butternut squash gnocchi and sea scallop. Our friends devoured the Chocolate molten explosion dessert. And the spicy Paloma drink has just the right kick. There are so many other things on the menu I want to try but it is hard to pass up our favorites. Could not get the photos to attach our your mouth would be watering! First time here and let me start off. The gentlemen at the door threw menus to us after we sat down. When we expressed our dissatisfaction his explanation was that he was having a bad day and that's the business um what? After ordering a bottle of Caymus that was served warm we were told they would get another from the "cellar" however it came back with the same temperature. Hands down the worst meal we have had in years. None of our family of six ate our meal. Confused ingredients, over basiled meatballs, smelly sausage. This after we called for a reservation and were told we didn't need one. I questioned the man on the phone and he said no worries we will see you in 20, then we got here and they were rude and uppity about us not having a reservation AND intentionally put us in the worst table in the restaurant. The place can be both casual or dressy depending on how you want to make your night:-) we got there around 6pm, no reservation needed for two by the way, it's based on first come first serve. We were seated right away near the bar. I ordered "wild and free" for cocktail, it's good but was okay for me. I later ordered Sancerre to complement my pasta dinner, which was absolutely delicious by the way! For appetizer We had the Portuguese Octopus; I got the pasta special, forgot the name but it was basically linguini with shrimp, scallops and cut up clams with white wine sauce. The pasta for this dish was Capellini originally but I asked for linguini instead and they were able to replace it so I was happy! All the pastas are homemade by the way! Such a disappointment and such an expense-- Where would one like me to begin? The hemorrhoid inducing bench seats that sling out to seat you or the dried up shoe leather chicken breast dish! My Dogs will be happy with the leftovers...my spouse and I, fully unsatisfied. Cute booths, great drinks, good pizza and sour red sauce on pasta makes this a haunting and far from a good dining experience. This was in par with a terrible first date but the good thing about it is, it was my first, my last and far from my everything! The bread that they greet you with would be fantastic bird feed on a sunny day-heck, a rainy day too! Yes, for us, we are one and done! As for waiter, he did not give a rat's buttocks that I found my chicken dried when asked if everything was ok-as a matter of fact he made such a sympathetic face, took off to tend to another table and never came back until check time. Such a disappointment!! The place can accommodate large parties but your comfort and acoustics will be compromised as will your pockets! Pricey food for mediocre flavor and a very loud ambiance!! If you're looking to piss someone off, great place to accomplish it! Other than tasty pricey cocktails, Short rib pizza was good but very light on the truffle oil-crust was nice and crisp without being dry and toppings other than oil were spot on...but unfortunately the appetizer is where it all ended. Been to Spiga four times now. The latest with neighbors and I ordered the fried meatballs and the Calabrese pizza. The meatballs were delightful with a soft, moist interior with great flavor and a cripy expterior, all nestled in a sweet tomato sauce and a dollop of ricotta. I really liked these meatballs. The Calabrese pizza offered a great spicy-sweet combo from the spicy Sopressata Calabrese and the drizzles of hot oil and honey. With one pizza oven there might be a wait for the pizzas and the server was great to let us know. After sampling a good portion of the menu, this is a new go-to Italian restaurant with a large menu at a good price point. read more

Newest restaurant to grace downtown New Canaan. Totally renovated industrial setting with a hip vibe. Visited on a August Tuesday night at 7:45 and was very busy. Few ahead of us waiting for tables. Was told wait time would be 10-15 minutes and in less than that time we were comfortably seated in an orange booth that looked out over the seating area. Noise level a little high but not too bad. Menu has many choices that should please everyone . We settled on appetizers of Tuna tartare, rice balls and meatballs (1 adult/2 teens dining). Tuna was very good but a bit small and lacking pizazz for $15. Kids devoured other apps ($9)and they got rave reviews. Also had the arugula & pear salad with mango dressing and 2 pizzas. The salad was fresh and crisp and the portion was large. Combination was really good for a hot summer night. The pizzas (New England with lobster/arugula and the Rustica with sausage) were both delicious. Large 12 inch square pies with crust not too thin or thick. Much too large for the teens appetites but we didn't mind taking them home. Considering the restaurant is very new they did a good job getting food out (10 minutes for app and 20 minutes to dinner). If this is any indication of what's to come they are off to a great start! We look forward to coming back to try their homemade pasta and main curse entrees. Was told Monday night has 1/2 price wine bottles...worth checking out. Revisited recently with a group of 5, arrived at 6pm. This time sat in middle section at trendy looking wooden table with attached swivel stools. They were cool for about 40 minutes then we all began complaining... No back rest, hard seats, just plain uncomfortable. Unlike our last visit the noise level was almost laughable, could not even hear the person next to me and it was early in the evening. Food was average:when Pizza came out completely burnt and one special was not the fish as described (it was not halibut as described, it was Bronzino). Spoke to the manager who is very polite about it but rating dropped down to average. read more

Both times we went there, they said they had no table for us when most of the tables were unoccupied. The first time, we thought maybe they were reserved, but when another group walked in behind us, they sat them right away with no reservation. The second time, we went there with my dad who has a bad back. We were celebrating our son's graduation. We were told again that they had no table for us when the place was mostly empty. They said they would sit us in the back the kitchen at a table with the swivel stools. My dad, a pretty successful and well-traveled guy, asked them respectfully for a table with chairbacks or a booth. They said no and asked us to go elsewhere. The maitre d is gruff and unapologetic whose mission is clearly to rope in what the management thinks are the "in crowd" in town. The hostess is rude and brainless. I would give the food a mediocre rating... it's nothing special. The prices are outrageous and the service just stinks. This place is going to close, just like every other joint in that location does. It's apparent they are trying to drive as much revenue as possible until that ultimately happens. Our money is just as green as everyone else's in town... and we're pretty easy on the eyes too! If you want to be known as a New Canaan player,by all means go to Spiga and get ripped off. read more

They come out with your order in like 1 to 2 minutes but it feels a lot faster because of the little talk. Well you have to go to Spiga because of the speedy Service and the friendly waiters. Beside the friendly waiters, Spiga has amazing food. Such as appetizer of a piece of bread dipped in ricotta cheese, Big Juicy Chicken cutlets, and the smore'o. As soon as you sit down the waiters put out a cup of gournay cheese for a delicious appetizer. I take a spoon full of the ricotta and put it on my plate. Then I rip a piece of bread off the loaf and dip it in the cheese. "Omg this is sooo good" I say out loud. The chicken cutlets are just perfect with a side of fries. The crisp layer of bread with the piece of chicken inside, 10 pieces of those amazing chicken cutlets with fries, what a delight. After a filling dinner you have to have the smore'o. The Smore'o is a chocolate cup covered in chocolate mousse with roasted whipped cream on top and in all 4 corners of the plate. The smore'o is just the best dessert ever. When you go to Spiga you will always get the best of the best food. After all Spiga is the best restaurant in town because of the amazing food, fast Service, and the friendly waiters. They are NOT following COVID-19 social distancing guidelines. The restaurant was close to 100% capacity inside and the law requires them to be at 50% capacity. Some customers were walking around without masks on. I was uncomfortable the entire meal. Although the food was very good I will not go back. The service wasn't great either. No host at door. I went to Spiga for lunch on my birthday. My review is mixed between my order of really good dishes and unacceptably bad ones, which I had to return twice. I ordered fried calamari and a goat cheese salad. The calamari were hard and rubbery and we had to return them. When they came back, they were good, cooked as they should, crispy on the outside and soft and slightly chewy on the inside. The salad was good. I then ordered the $29 sole, my favorite fish. What I received was not sole. It was a white flakey fish that looked and tasted more like cod. When we inquired, the chef blamed the supplier? A chef does not know the difference between a mundane, thick flakey white fish and Atlantic sole?? The reason is quite other in my opinion... My husband had the seafood casserole, which was scrumptious and generous with its cumin infused creamy tomato sauce. The desserts, panna cotta and tiramisu were superb and they offered us the espressos. The service was good and waiters were polite and attentive. A shame that such unacceptable inconsistencies from the kitchen would spoil an otherwise pleasant experience. read more

This place has a great design and ambience. I tried the lunch prix fix as I had not been here before and wanted to try a few things. To start, they bring you bread and you don't get butter or olive oil with it...but fresh creamy burrata. I almost died and went to food heaven on the spot. I had the Caesar salad, eggplant parmagiana and the cannoli. All were excellent. The salad was very fresh and the dressing was sparingly mixed in (which I like) with fresh grated parmesan sheets sprinkled throughout. The eggplant parmagiana is not your typical parmagiana, which is a good thing. It has excellent flavor and is not at all greasy. It layered almost in a lasagna style. The pasta and sauce accompanying it is flavorful. The cannoli was also a win. The only snag was the first and second courses were brought together by a food runner - who wants to have to scarf their salad while their main dish gets cold? However, when brought to my server's attention she quickly rectified it and had a fresh eggplant parmagiana sent out when I was ready for it.
