Brewery # 368 Shiner is the biggest brewery in a state that likes things big. Shiner is the brewery (Shiner Bock was the beer) that got me back into beer drinking 20 years ago. That's why I gave them 4 stars instead of 3. This place is huge. It's part brewery, part distillery, part bbq restaurant, part gift shop and all things tourist trap. The distillery was very nice, but I wasn't a fan of the product. Although to be fair I didn't try them all. The tap room was disappointing as they didn't have any kind of exclusives or experimental beers that I like to see when visiting a brewery. It's simply 18.00 (Stupid amount) for a flight of 3 mini beers you can get at the local HEB but you get to keep the flight board. I didn't try the bbq but the grounds and gift shop are very nice. It was cool but it wasn't what I was wanting. I was hoping to find a bigger selection of beers to try. It's more like visiting a Budweiser or Miller than a craft brewery. If you know that going in, it's fine. I will still keep drinking Shiner beers, but I probably won't go back to the source.
This is our 3rd time here. We love this brewery and would visit more often except it's a little bit of a drive from New Braunfels. Very family and dog friendly with a pretty good bbq take out (picnic tables available). They have a new sit down restaurant on site which, unfortunately, was not open. We added the distillery tour this time and their vodka, gin, and cinnamon inspired spirits were very good. I took a pass on the moonshine. Both tour guides were very nice and took the time to answer questions. Sarah attended us for the distillery tour and Judy was our brewery guide. We had a wonderful day.
This is my second time visiting Shiner Brewery. Both times were great. First time was a few years ago. We did the brewery tour at that time. The new thing since I've been back is the addition of a distillery which is nice since I don't really drink that much beer regularly, anymore. However yesterday while at a nearby festival, I tried the Texhex IPA and lite blonde both were very nice. We also had a couple of their summer shandys which is always a nice choice on a hot day. Today we wanted to stop by the brewery being so close by. Staff are super friendly. Food, drinks, and tour are all great. I would love to come back again next time I'm in the area. Gift shop is also super cute.
If you are a Texas beer fan you have to visit this brewery at least once. I came here on my way back to Houston from San Antonio. The offshoot didn't add much driving time to the journey...just make sure you have a DD because they spoil you with booze if you do the tours. The tour itself is very nice. You get to see lots of the brewery and packaging process. You get a bunch of swag too: sticker, bag, cup, and a little surprise at the end. Plus 3 drink tokens with each tour fee. When I came there was live music outside for Memorial Day which was a great way to relax. The bbq place on site was also decent, I got the pulled pork sandwich and was able to order on my phone and pick up when ready. Don't skip out on this place, it's well worth the detour!
Great independent brewery! Service, atmosphere, food and drinks: We purchased tickets for a Shinerfest and arrived at the Shiner brewery for the first time. The festival was super fun. Everything was well organised. The staging, the live music, on site food and various beers (cocktails too, as they are distillery) made this event simply awesome. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Additionally, we purchased the brewery tour which is something I would recommend you to do when you visit this place. They are planning for more events this year so check out their website and don't hesitate to attend.
We had talked about visiting for years, but with it being about 4.5 hours from DFW we never got around to visiting until our anniversary this past summer. I would highly suggest you purchase tickets to the brewery online ahead of time to secure a spot on their tours. The system had just changed when we got there so it was somewhat over booked. And for August it was HOT. The inside of the brewery does NOT have AC. They do have elevators to take you upstairs if you need assistence instead of using the stairs. They give you some tokens for beers included with your ticket. We enjoyed the fresh brews available on the spot and being able to walk around with them while on tour. They also had some live music outside and you could purchase food from their BBQ place- K Spoetzel BBQ Company. We also could see some production of the beer and packaging in the warehouse since it was a friday that we were visiting which is always neat. It is not near much else, but its worth a visit if you live in Texas.
Maybe the problem is that i was expecting a microbrewery and this strikes me as more of a corporate place. I wanted to come in and get a flight of their beers. but not so fast! you first get to the tour office, who told me to go into the gift shop to inquire how i could purchase beer. you can get a flight of beer for $18 for three tasters. (what?!?!) or... you can buy a glass that you have to cart around for $10, and you get two tokens, and each token can be exchanged for a glass of beer. why so convoluted? the tour, then gift shop, then bar all seemed very sterile and corporate. not like a microbrewery where the person behind the counter is excited about their offerings. i don't like these types of places, but if this is your thing, more power to you! also, if you have a large vehicle or RV or trailer, i wouldn't try their parking lot. see pic
What fun this tour was. Was it more fun the more we drank/tasted? Well, of course! We did the FULL tour and also had lunch on the grounds. Service was fantastic. So as the Texans say everything is bigger in Texas... this tour was also bigger. Bigger fun. Just wish the actual brewery was in production the day we were there but nope. It had just finished something.... Try everything and have a designated driver!
The death of a Texas legend: We brought family to Shiner for a tour and were so disappointed. I've taken this tour a hundred times and it's always marked by great people with a great sense of humor that proudly give away samples of what they make here...and the tour was free. I guess those people all moved on. The Guy at the gate was short with us and rude as we tried to figure out where to go with all the new stuff. No hospitality. No welcome. Just rudeness. The lady giving the brewery tour got offended at a joke I made to try to taste their whisky. It's a sad day when I'm used to coming here and belly laughing with the staff. I guess the European liberal Karen's that bought the Shiner name are allergic to a good time. Lastly, everything cost a fortune. Gone are the days when Mr. Spoetzle and his people would gladly give a sample to win a loyal drinker of Shiner Beer (which I've been for YEARS). He would be more disappointed than I am. I'll not be back and I'll have to start trying to like Lonestar.

Really enjoyed the tour. Decent length, not too short and not too long - interesting story. Cost was about $26 but you got three 16 ox glasses of beer. They had live music so we sat outside after, listened to music and enjoyed our beers. read more
Spoetzel Brewery is a Texas Thang that all Native and Adopted Texans must visit at some point in their lives. It's iconic. When I took my first brewery tour here as a college kid, the tour was free because I was a budding home brewer, and there were only 3 buildings here to see - the brew houses the tasting room, and the office. That's all that was here! Now those historic 1912 buildings have been swallowed up by the machinery of modern multi-national brewing company Gambrinus, and the tours start at $20 for a very basic tour (that comes with a bag, a pint glass and 3 beers) and go up to $5000 for the Uber-snooty VIP Experience. To the best of our memory the levels were per person: $20 Brewer individual $50 Cooler & new Shiner brewhouse, $100 Original 1912 brewhouse tour, $150 Asst Brewmaster Pass $500 Brewmaster tour pass, $5000 Kosmo's Private Tour. Kids are welcome (and get root beers). Like I said- the higher the tour the more perks and stuff you get. If you don't want to do the tour you are still welcome to stroll around the gift shop, and have a Shiner beer on tap in the Tasting room. Wr bought a growler, which comes with a free fill of the on-tap shiner beer of your choices- and yes, they will let you taste before you fill :) Afterwards enjoy your beer at a picnic table, listen to the live music, play a little cornhole with your friends, and take pix by the giant 6-pack of a shiner Bock for your Instagram! This is a great place to hang out and have a Shiner. 5 Shiner stars! read more

Horrible visit. You can't buy beer w cash they force you to buy T-shirt's, glasses and other crap to then receive chips that you can eventually trade in for a beer after waiting in line for too too long. Food sucks! 7.00$ for a lame small cup of "chili", SoulFood Outdoor Food truck is terrible. Brown water chili w beans. What a rip off. The whole experience was a sad disappointment. Great music and lovely grounds but you can't buy beer! WTF? Why would I want to buy multiple glasses and tshirts just to have a beer? read more

Having an ok time. The live music was not great. The mic kept feeding back LOUD and REPEATEDLY. Then he literally made a racist comment. So it's a hard no for me. I think all should feel welcome and they made it very obvious that wasn't the case. Extremely disappointing. Upset I spent money here. Would not recommend. read more

Great tour, about 45 minutes. For $20 you get the tour, three beers, sunglasses,and a pint glass. Not a bad deal. They have a gift shop, cornhole, and a outdoor bar with music. You can book your tour time online and then pay when you arrive. Fun afternoon! read more

I would give 10 stars if that was an option. All of the staff was amazing and very friendly. We took the tour and tried all of the beers on tap. Amazing! They have a kitchen that serves BBQ and there was live music in the courtyard. Along with the football games, it was Sunday ;) Everything was clean and stocked. read more
Spoetzl Brewery is Shiner's brewery that's located in Shiner, Texas. Shiner, known as the cleanest little town in Texas, is in between Houston and San Antonio. I made a little road trip there on a Monday because what better way to start off your week than with some brews? They have a spacious parking lot. Tours happen often and they're only $5. It's well worth the price as you get four mini-beers plus a tour of the brewery. Our tour guide gave us an interesting history of the brewery and how beer is produced. I won't give all of the details away, but rest assured, you'll enjoy it. After the tour, they have a gift shop/bar where you can continue drinking and buy some souvenirs. Outside, they have some picnic tables and cornhole. If you're from Houston, San Antonio, or Austin--make the trip sometime! The only real downside I can think of is that they don't have any food at the brewery. It would have been nice to have lunch here. But hey, having your choice of 10 or so Shiner beers on tap made up for it. read more
My husband and I stopped in at 4pm on a Saturday. We were passing through town and knew we couldn't be this close and not stop in! We were so glad we did. We didn't think there would be another tour so late in the day, but there was another tour at 4:20pm. The tour guide was funny and informative. The factory is interesting to see and I hope to come back during the week (tours run 11-3) so I can see it all put to work. The tour was only $5 per person and that included 4 tokens, which you turn in for tastings. (They started charging in July). Many Shiner beers are great, but we especially liked the Brewers Pride (Rose Pale Ale), Prickly Pear, and Cerveza. Definitely would recommend a visit! The tours are still free for those under 18, first responders, clergy, active military, and veterans. read more

Definitely a must visit for beer lovers! The tour is amazing - so much history and you get beer tokens with purchase of a tour. They have all of their current flavors on tap so you can just choose which one you'd like to try! You can take your beer on the tour with you or save it until after so you can enjoy it on their beautiful site (or do both, you get more than one token). You also get beer tokens if you buy any glass they have in the gift store! They also have barbecue available right next to the gift shop, and the food was delicious! I believe they just opened so they're getting the hang of things, but it was all packaged great and tasted amazing. read more

What a delightful stop this is. The people who work here very obviously love what they do and take great pride in their product. One man worked there for 63 years, another (his cousin?) for 58, and the current winner is a man who has worked there for 50 years. Wow. There's no forced retirement here and they get 'beer bonuses'. Lol The tour was more like a trip down memory lane for our lady, but she was a hoot and we did (finally!) get to see the production area. It's quite fascinating. They can turn out 1200+ bottles a MINUTE and operate 24hrs a day 5 days a week. Each person is responsible for the proper maintenance of their respective line. Really cool to see in action.... plus there's BEER at the end. Or beginning. Or both. Only reason for four stars rather than five.... our lady was a bit long-winded and much of the tour was pretty warm. read more

This place is great if you are up for the tour and the whole Shiner experience, but if you are looking for a few beers this is not the place to go! You cannot just go get some beers and sit in the outdoor tent area. You have to either go on the tour or buy a $10 souvenir glass for 2 beer tokens. I went with a handful of friends to just drink a few beers and listen to music. Needing to buy the glasses was a letdown. The beer is great though!! read more

We were staying nearby Shiner for a wedding so we thought to come by to kill some time on a Saturday morning. The place was pretty easy to find and isnt such a bad stop if you road tripping between Houston and SA. It's only $5 for a tour, entry, and 4 mini pints. The tour was actually just long and short enough to keep us entertained and not bored. The 4 mini pints actually give you a lot of beer, and you get to try a lot of their unique flavors. There's also a lot of cute outdoor area with games, a food truck, and lots of shaded seating. As someone who doesn't love drinking beer, I actually enjoyed the visit and would definitely come back if in the area! read more
The gift shop/bar section is small and can get cramped if there is a lot of people. The outdoor area is large and plenty of space for lawn chairs. The brewery looks smaller than it actually was, especially if you think about how many beers are bottled/canned. The tour is very informative and worth doing once to get a full idea of how much they produce. Not much else to do in the area, but I would visit again next time I am in the area. read more
Fun place to stop by if you are even remotely in the area. On a recent trip to San Antonio from Houston, my wife made the great recommendation to detour through Shiner TX to check out the brewery. Fun fact I learned that day - the beer is named after the city, and not the brewery itself. You already know the beer (delicious) and the tap room is pretty neat as well. A little crowded, but I would recommend getting the tour as you get samples included and the grounds are worth seeing. One of my favorite parts of the visit was learning the history of this place. They have been brewing beer for over 110 years! The brewery has done a great job keeping a wide array of photos that show the progression of the brewery through time. The tour also did a great job of telling stories of how the brewery survived through prohibition and prospered to what it is today. All shiner sold across the world is brewed here and it is still locally owned! Definately a proud point for Texas. read more

Spoetzl Brewery was awesome! The tours are free, although they are not very long. Maybe 40 minutes. I was expecting a little over an hour, but I was still excited to be there. At the end of the tour you go through the gift shop and get free samples of beer! FREE BEER! I happen to go on a Saturday, so there was a big event going on outside with a beer garden, corn hole, live music, and food. Although to partake in the food and beer you had to cough up $30 a person. So it turned out to be a great atmosphere with many people there. I highly recommend you beers lovers like myself to give the ole shiner brewery a tour. Worth it! read more

Fun experience have. Been on the tour many times and every time they seems to enhance it keeping it interesting for the next visit. Shiners weekend food trucks, Bands, yard games and beer sampling makes for a great afternoon. Enjoy visiting the brewery mostly for the sneak peek of beers to come this time " Texas Mule". read more
Shiner is the beer that got me into craft beer and was so excited to visit this mecca of brews & Texan culture.....and it did not disappoint!! So well done! The tour is super fun, informative, but not too long. The vibes both inside & out are amazing. Everyone is super polite and welcoming. Of course all the great Shiner beers on tap, and for only $2.75 a pint! The gift shop has awesome swag. Live music & a food truck & yard games were all on site. I could spend forever here! Hard to beat free. Show up for one of their scheduled tours and get 5 free tokens for samples. Then enjoy a quick tour through the brewery in which you hear a little history about the brewery and the brewing process. There's a little gift shop, areas to sit outside, yard games, and when we were there- live music playing some country music. Really cool vibe. Just very unfortunate that you can't buy beer there. So once your free samples are out, you're done. If you're in the area swing by! And grab a beer from Howard's afterwards if you're still thirsty. read more

I've never been to the brewery per se, but I have drank gallons of their products. I love Shiner beer. Many years ago someone suggested I try a Shiner Bock. This was at the beginning of my beer drinking days when I thought Bud Light was quality beer. How times have changed. Once I had that first Shiner, I was in love. Thankfully many of the other Shiner beers are now imported to Louisiana. I am particularly fond of the Heifweizen (who knows if this is spelled properly) and the double wheat. Thank you to all of the people at the brewery. I appreciate your hard work and quality products. To those of you that haven't tried a Shiner, do it, your life will never be the same. read more
The tour is great, short and sweet. Don't come on a weekend. The gift shop is tiny, but the beer is good. You get 4 tastings with your free tour. Free beer? Totally. There's nothing really around here, but a cute candy shop and a subway. Oh! They don't sell beer in the gift shop, it's against the law? read more

No you are not able to purchase beer. Tokens are included with your tour package . Bottled beer is included depending on what tour package is purchased. Totally worth the money.
Do they serve food with the beer? If so, what kind?
There is a food truck usually there.
Are dogs allowed?
I’ve taken one before however he wasn’t allowed inside the tasting room or in the tour areas. There is seating outside that allows you to enjoy a taster with your four legged friend(s) by your side though.
