I love to be near a window for dinner, and the giant one overlooking Illinois St was beautiful. I think what I like best about S&S is that the menu seems very different than what I'm used to, so if you want to try something new, I definitely recommend it. The space is so beautiful. It makes you feel live you been transported. I wish more people would hang out here. Spoke and Steele makes a thriving attempt to lead the charge toward increasingly locally sourced, artisan cuisine. Much of their food comes from local artisans and vendors like Amelia's Bakery, Gallery Pastry Shop, Smoking Goose, Tulip Tree Creamery, Traders Point, and Growing Places Indy. The bottom of their menu provides a complete list of these establishments, along with a statement that they are "slow food approved and promote good, clean and fair food for all." While I applaud the sentiment, and appreciate their thoughtfully comprised and albeit quite delicious menu, I can't help but be saddened by the one glaringly obvious omission, the absolute and complete lack of a vegetarian entree option. When I asked the server what most vegetarians do, he paused, thought for a minute, and said, "I guess they just order a bunch of sides. We're not really the most vegetarian-friendly restaurant." And this is a shame, because many of the salads, appetizers, and sides are quite vegetarian-friendly. This, combined with the statement that their food is "for all," shoves the lack of a veggie-friendly entree squarely into the spotlight. The menu helpfully labels each item as nut-free, gluten-free, and dairy-free as appropriate, but has not thought to include vegetarians in their dietary consideration. I immensely enjoyed my smorgasbord of beet and endive salad, truffle toast with fontina and frisee, and roasted asparagus with charred shiitake, but was still wistful when my dining companions were treated to truly inspired creations like brown butter cod with favas and puffed black rice, and heritage pork with pommes aligot and caraway kraut. No - no - I'm sorry, but this was not good. Ok - the service was fine. Nothing to complain about there. I had made a reservation on OpenTable and my friend and I were promptly seated. The food came out quickly and our waitress was attentive. The food though ... here's the lesson: don't order southern food in Indianapolis. Spoke and Steele has no idea what they're doing with it. Hush puppies - too dense. They tasted good - but hush puppies are meant to be light and fluffy. These were dense and chewy. I'm not sure what type of sauce they were sent with but it didn't have any taste to it. Crispy Brussel Sprouts - tasted good with a lemon tang but ... here's the crime ... SHREDDED. Who the frell shreds their "crispy brussel sprout" appetizer? Lastly ... the shrimp and grits. no nononononononono --- the grits were RUNNY. The butter / oil that it was cooked in was ... well - it was still present and made the grits runny. This is, in a southerner's opinion, the ultimate sin. The other issues MIGHT'VE been forgiven - putting tomatoes and onions in the grits? But not the soupy quality of the grits. Never that. I'm guessing that these are this places "interpretation" of southern dishes. First let me start by saying I love the decor of this place. Everything about it is beautiful to me, the glossy teal blue colored bar top to the shiny accents that adorn the room, just gorgeous! I also feel extra fancy when I am in this place. I think this is a hidden breakfast gem. When you are craving a high end brunch experience but with no wait time check this place out. Their menu offers classic breakfast item to more creative brunch flair. I ordered the Hashbrown Chilaquiles and loved it. The hash browns were in a waffle like form and super crunchy with a soft center. The bacon was cooked perfectly so I could easily cut it with a knife but not limp and gross. I am super picky about runny eggs so I tend to stay clear away from sunny side up eggs but these were done perfectly! No slimy uncooked whites anywhere. There was a tomotilla sauce that gave it a nice hit of acid and freshness to the dish. I added hot sauce because I like a touch of heat. The best part of this experience for me was breezy in and out. I was not in the mood to deal with droves of people standing around drinking coffee while waiting for a seat. This place was comfortable, clean and quiet despite the fact there were some other people having breakfast. I saw them deliver a burger to a table before 10am. A burger and fries for breakfast?!? YES please! My brunch experience also came with a complimentary palate cleanser. It was a fresh juice of sorts, with strawberries and mint. I can't recall the name but I know it was on the menu if I wanted to order a glass. Felt it was a nice touch to my experience. Very disappointed in the food we ordered. The appetizer-chicken croquets were so small, a lot of breading and no flavor. The Caesar salad-was nothing special. We ordered the short rib (looked like chuck roast not like typical short ribs), they served with plain basmati rice (no flavor) and green beans. We asked for a little sauce (from short ribs) so we could put on rice-they brought out a cup person (too much-chef must not have liked that). It was a busy night in town with preseason football and concert so we couldn't get in anywhere else--it was a disappointment for a special meal-don't waste your dollars. I started with a Sazerac made with Bonesnapper Rye along with the Nugs, a sweet and slightly spicy melt in your mouth meatball served atop a potato slice. A must on your first visit. Followed with a garbanzo bean and arugula salad. Lightly dressed to let the flavors of the vegetables stand out. Mary suggested the sea scallops and I couldn't say no. Great recommendation. First off, get the biscuits with honey and butter for an app! The best biscuits that I have ever eaten. Hands down. Second, get a cocktail off of their original cocktail menu. They have such interesting cocktails- I had the deja vu and it was so good and very refreshing. My husband went with an old favorite of his- an old fashioned and he said that it was the best old fashioned he has had. I got the salmon as my main course and it was well cooked and flavorful. My husband had the shrimp and grits, and again, he said he thinks it is the best he has ever had. The grits were so creamy and flavorful. For dessert we had the homemade brownie. It came with whipped cream and ice cream. It was good, but I think next time we will try the croissant bread pudding. We will definitely be back! read more

Came here for breakfast based on the reviews. I was in town for business, so just had limited time for a quick bite. I ordered a make my own omelette with just some basic ingredients, the order was missing 1 of my 3 ingredients, the bfast potatoes tasted like they were made early in the morning and came out after being in a heat oven. Service was very slow and the restaurant had max 10 people in it. I had to refill my own coffee. Food was average, nothing special. Tucked inside Le Meridian hotel (the old Canterbury location.) Made reservations (even though it was lunch, but because it was Valentine's day), but it wasn't busy when we arrived. Surprisingly, it was almost empty! Nice classic but modern dining area, decorated with lots of mercury glass. Our waiter was nice and told us some of his menu favorites. Hubs had a build your own omelet, and I had the croque madame. (See pics.) Both a #yum. Sandwich was big enough to make leftovers. Fries were nicely seasoned. Food was very good, and reasonably/moderately priced (my big sandwich and fries for $14). The only thing that was a little weird was my diet coke (actually pepsi) for $3 was served as a can with a glass. I didn't drink enough to see if refills would have been separate. Now, today was the coldest bitter winter day we had in a while, and the dining room was cold. I've only come here for cocktails, so that's what my review is based off of. I've been here a handful of times, and I've never left unimpressed with the service, my cocktails, and my overall experience. First off, the interior is beyond beautiful. The white brick walls, the fireplace and mantle. It's all done without being too over-the-top; something I really appreciate. I've had a few different cocktails before here and they've always delivered. Their mixologists do fun and new things to enhance your experience like lighting wood on fire and then using that smoke to infuse the inside of your glass before pouring the cocktail inside. It's those small things that make it unique and worth spending the few extra dollars. Sadly, I don't make it down as much as I'd like given its location is in a part of town I don't find myself in, but it's totally worth it every time I do visit! read more

The bar and bartenders are awesome! Very hip and trendy. I had the Lemans Rough Rider and it was delicious. I don't normally order craft cocktails but this was great. I also had a classic gin martini that was stirred. I learned that you do not shake a gin martini so you don't break the ice and water it down. This is a lovely space in a beautiful hotel. It's in a great location downtown just next to St Elmo's steakhouse. I ended up here for a work dinner and the place was mostly empty. The service was sporadic. Our server was great when she was with us but I spent a lot of time wondering where she was (especially given the lack of patrons). Ok, so the lack of stars has nothing to do with flavor. The flavor is spot on. I was here with 12 people, and being the friendly person I am, I tried many of the dishes (for science and all, you know?) Everything I has was pretty good, but the standout was the meatballs...they were fantastic when combined with those melty cheese curds that come with them. The issue I have with this place is value. Value is the reason I cannot bring myself to give a full 5 stars. The fact that 5 meatballs cost $18, and that a flank (one of the worst cuts) steak and fries costs $48 is beyond absurd. As a matter of fact, the best value item on the menu is the burger, and that is $17. If you have a ton of disposable income, or money is no object...this place is for you, as value doesn't matter to you. But if you want bang for your buck, avoid this place as you can get amazing food for half the price downtown. read more

Tried this place with some friends for a conference and it was wonderful. Our waitress was very attentive and helpful when selecting our dishes and drinks. I had a new cocktail recently added called Cloudy Day. It was the perfect summer drink fruity light and refreshing. For starter we had the seared Brussels sprouts with bacon. If not shared it could be an entree on its own. For the main course, I tried the butternut squash rigatoni with Cajun shrimp. We had a very disappointing dinner. Waitress was nice, but the food took forever and was sub par. We ordered fries as an appetizer - these took 25 minutes to come out and lacked salt. Our salads with chicken were not ready for another 20 minutes. The chicken was extremely dry and the salads had few ingredients beyond a pile of semi-greasy, flavorless lettuce (eg my Niçoise salad had 1 Kalamata olive). They comped the salads, which was appreciated and appropriate, but they were really terrible. It is too bad as this place used to be much better. read more

The ambiance and place itself is amazing. However, the food was less than. We started with the shrimp appetizer which was good. My husband ordered the lamb and I had the rigatoni with chicken. The lamb was almost flavorless and my chicken was dry. Our server seemed to high to function. We waited almost 30 minutes to even be acknowledged once sat and she struggled even delivering my drinks. His old fashion was watered down because we watched our drinks sit for at least another 20 minutes after prepared. An excellent little place located in the LeMeridien hotel in downtown Indy. A few trips here and I am at oh 3.5 stars, but will give them 4. My first trip here I was a bit dismayed by the hipster waitstaff and thought "here we go with the Portlandia style explanations", but I was pleasantly surprised when the staff were quite attentive, did not pretend to be experts in Indiana pigs, but seemed to be more interested in making sure we have a good experience. Plus one of them recommended a local gin, which was really good (citrusy with a hint of fennel on the nose). The food has been a bit all over the place. Charcuterie and cheese board was outstanding with a nice variety of well made charcuterie (the coppa and a hard sausage with gin were outstanding) and nice selection of cheeses and really fabulous pickles (pickled grapes were just a fantastic though slightly disconcerting eat!), but then accompanied by crappy bread. Kale salad, brussels sprouts, fries and meatloaf meatballs were uniformly good, but the larger plated dishes while pretty were underseasoned and needed to be spiked with salt and something else....(flavor maybe???) Think MadMen meets a spread in ElleDecor mag! - The price point at lunch was really very reasonable and appropriate for the location of the restaurant, quality of food and ambiance. (~$12 sandwiches) - The presentation of food was beautiful, and (bonus!) it tasted amazing. (The watermelon gazpacho was a fan fave at our table!) - The side windows open up (to the side of St. Elmo's for a hint of an open air vibe!) - Reserve via OpenTable and get seated right away! Least favorite bits: - It was quiet. SO quiet. People, go there and fill this place up! Give it some energy! It deserves it! - The menu is small. Don't go with a super picky eater or someone unwilling to share (those are good life lessons in general though, aren't they?) - The service was good but not quite five star. I finally had the chance to check out Spoke & Steele last night. I was a bit surprised on how empty it was on a Saturday night. I wasn't overly impressed with the atmosphere, I am sure they were going for trendy, but to me it just looked outdated. They have a very comprehensive cocktail, wine and beer menu. I had both the vesper and a whiskey sour and both were excellent. My friend and I decided to share a couple of the small plates and had a side of brussel sprouts with it. The meatloaf nuggets were okay, nothing to write home about. The funeral potatoes were good, but the brussel sprouts took the award for the best item that we tried. I am not usually a huge fan of brussel sprouts, but these were awesome. We also tried the cheesecake and one of the dessert pots that had popcorn on top. The cheesecake was fluffy, so if you are looking for a dense cheesecake, you probably wouldn't like it. The only reason why I took my rating down by a star was the service. We were the only table for our server and he kept missing the mark. He didn't know the cocktail menu well and actually forgot our drink orders from the short walk from the table to the bartender. He actually forgot to even put in our drink order at one point. I will probably return to Spoke & Steel if nothing else, but to have those brussel sprouts again! read more

Having enjoyed a previous evening meal at Spoke & Steele, my wife and I decided to bring a long-time friend from Northern Illinois to brunch. We weren't sure what time she would arrive, so it was fortunate that this upscale restaurant was open from early in the morning through late into the evening without any down time! It turned out to be a perfect choice. Arriving somewhere around 11 a.m., we got our choice of seats in the dining area near the bar. We placed our beverage orders and selected a pastry basket to start on while looking over the menu. The pastries were four small sized options including a cinnamon, a raspberry, an apple, and a pecan variety. All had good flavor (I didn't get to try the cinnamon one because my wife nabbed that one as soon as we peeled back the cloth covering.) The main courses or "Large Plates" were a series of familiar breakfast options elevated to the best quality and presented with an eye for whetting the appetite. I was intentionally hungry going in because I wanted to try a couple of the large plates this Saturday morning. For my choices, I selected the Amelia's Brioche French Toast - orange butter, strawberry danish dessert cream, bourbon syrup (the toast was light and delicious even before I used the syrup and butter.) The strawberry cream was perfect for these thick cut slices. My other choice was the S&S Organic Eggs with applewood bacon, hash browns, & whole grain toast. I chose my eggs over easy and didn't even use the variety of jellies that accompanied the dish. I used the bread to mop up the egg yolk that broke over my hash browns and onto the plate. Excellent choices for me! My wife went for the Cheese Omelette that came with steckler cheddar, hash browns, and her choice of the rye toast. She seemed to really enjoy the flavor of the cheddar eggs. I wasn't as big of a fan as she was on the bite she shared with me, but she really thought they were good, especially with a little extra table salt. Our friend went with the Pork Belly Benedict with poached egg and citrus hollandaise with hash browns. She commented that the hollandaise was delicious. The pork belly portion was generous as well. Oh, and the coffee was just right. I like mine black, so I found the taste was robust enough to stand up to the entree flavors but very smooth. Service was prompt and efficient. Maybe it could have been a little more inviting since we were the only ones dining at that early lunch hour, but our coffee was kept topped off and my wife's request for salt, ketchup, and a soda to replace the iced tea were handled immediately. Officially started off Devour Downtown Winterfest 2015 with a trip to Spoke & Steele! High five to me and my girls for making a great decision to check this place out. I love the simple modern decor and coziness of the place although for some reason it was a bit humid. We started off the evening with cocktails. Out waitress was super helpful, patience, and full of great suggestions. For dinner, we enjoyed the 3 course Devour Menu for $35. I ordered the #frites, pork chop, and salted caramel bundino. I couldn't believe how quickly each course was served. The #frites were a delight. Basically oversized wedge fries in of a hashtag formation. I love the whimsical touch. The Utah fry sauce was great. For the next course, I had the Duroc pork chop. Let me take a moment to talk about the Brussels sprouts and pancetta. Perfect combination! The fattiness of the pancetta with roasted sprouts was pure perfection. I was sad when I ate the last one. The pork chop was also a winner. The sweetness of the truffle maple sauce was a nice touch. Our last course was the salted caramel bundino with fudge sauce and caramel popcorn. This dessert was a winner. Perfect combination of sweet and salty. My popcorn was a tad bit overcooked, but otherwise I didn't want it to end. Great service, interesting menu, and great location. I will undoubtedly be back to Spoke & Steele! Everything was exceptional! My wife and I went for dinner. I had a fantastic burger and she had a great salad. My IPA was a perfect addition. The waitress was lovely, friendly, polite, without being over-bearing. The atmosphere was great; quiet and welcoming. We honestly cannot think of anything we would change - it was superb. This is the place that a grown up downtown Indy needs. If I did not know that it only took a 10 minute drive from my house I would swear I was in Chicago, LA, or NYC. Tonight I am seated in a booth for two that is actually very comfortable for a party of one. Seated opposite the bar you still feel in the action while able to enjoy a more refined dining experience. Food is local sourced and simply creative. Making it taste good while not going overboard can be an issue in places like this, but every bite is elegant while screaming Midwest. The Mormon Funeral Potatoes are covered in Corn Flakes, and they elevate the dish. This is the place to take people to impress. Addendum: Restaurants in Indy should learn from the professionalism of the staff. First class service, and the management checking in on me made me feel like I was their most important guest. This is a small quaint location. It was a toasty 16F outside and for a wimpy So Cal kid, this is no weather to venture out in. For the love of Pete we were complaining about the chilly 62F weather when I left home. With that said, the menu is limited but there is a attention to detail here. They are prepared meals as well as a la carte options. I started with the Tomato Bisque and it was delightful. I also ordered the filet special and requested it medium rare. Now considering I'm in Indy a beef eating state, I was surprised the steak came back medium-well. This is something you would expect from a Vegan capitol that is California but here, it was a bit of a disappointment. Poor lil moo moo, she died in vain. Poor lil thing. A filet cooked above medium rare is simply a crime in my eyes, especially in this state. Granted this was two days before they opened and I was too hungry to send it back. Also St. Elmo's is next door, which locally is very hard to compete with. Although the beer selection here is much more refined, something that would be similar to what you can find in California. Piece of advice, if you see Three Floyd's anything on any beer menu in town, order it or at minimum ask for a taster. It's life changing and if you are from out of state, good luck trying to find it. They also have a Nitro tap and if you don't know what that is well then you are in the wrong place and probably drink paps beer anyhow. This town is crazy... who in their right mind puts Paps Beer on tap. Sorry I had to vent. Well the bartender challenged my pallet to lighter beers but with personality. Just because a beer is lighter in color doesn't mean it doesn't pack a punch. Turns out the one beer I was introduced to with the highest alcohol content was the lightest beer in color and in taste. The character of the beer was singular and great tasting. All thanks to the wonderful bartender, bless her lil soul who was knowledgable enough to steer me in the right direction. Overall Spoke & Steel is quaint and for a restaurant attached to a swanky hotel, it's not bad at all. Stop in for drinks and maybe dinner if you are up to it. Today March 6th 2015 I ordered their burger called the Baller. Which was a burger cooked medium rare with a thin layer of diced pastrami. Now I hate anything pastrami but the burger was awesome!!! The fries or frittes as they call them were mind altering good. Paired with a beer on tap, you simply can't go wrong. It was my last meal in Indy and it was epic. That is why I changed my rating to very well deserved 5 Star. Off to warmer weather I suppose but a very content belly full of Indy goodness. Until next year Spoke and Steel... I can't believe that a supposed great hotel does not have Such staples in a bar as Jack Daniels whiskey. No matter where I have traveled in the WORLD I have not stayed at a hotel that did not offer "Jack" at their hotel bar. "I get" the whole "craft" local distilled concept, but there are certain staples that as a bar you CANNOT do without... and "Jack" is one of them... This to me and my party is UNFORGIVABLE!
