I dont recommend this place at all. Came here with my boyfriend because it looked like a fairly busy and welcoming diner/cafe. We both ordered one of their specialty lattes and waited. The waiter came back 3 times to tell us it'll be a little longer. We waited 25 minutes for coffee and it never came. We could see where the coffee was made and no one was ever in that section. We watched tables of people come in later than we did, order, get their food, finish eating and leave. Management is bad. None of the waiters have designated tables and they all just stop at whatever table they think needs anything. It gets confusing really fast because we got asked by 2 other people after someone had already taken our order if we had ordered yet. Also, the waiters are often standing around doing nothing near the back. They bitch and complain to each other loud enough when clearing tables about their tips that nearby customers can hear. read more

I wish I could write about the delicious meal I had here, but I never got it. After waiting to receive my food (after every other table that ordered after me), "my order" was quickly dropped on my table without so much as a "does everything look ok?" Or "do you need anything else?" Since my request for her to come back to the table went unheard, as she zipped away like lightening, I went inside to tell her my order was incorrect. After returning to my table and waiting 5 more minutes, my original waiter came back to check on us. Apparently the news of my order had not reached him. I told him my order was wrong and he said the order I received wasn't even mine. He said he'd replace it, but I told him not to bother. And our waters at the table were never replenished despite being seated outside in 100 degree weather. Never again. This morning we checked out Spoons for breakfast. It's a super cute chill restaurant with delicious food. We both had the chicken and waffles. The chicken was lightly breaded and fried, the seasoning was on point and the waffle was fluffy and tasty! They served it with honey butter and warm syrup, YUM! Our waitress, Karen was absolutely fabulous! The wait for our food wasn't long at all and was hot and fresh oh and the coffee was delicious! Will definitely go back and try lunch! read more

Only fair to say I didn't actually eat but my wife and I came early on Sunday to beat the lunch crowd, gave my name to the hostess and was told 15 min. After 15 min past we checked we were next, after 25 min I checked back and they said we were next, after 40 min I checked and we had been skipped. No apology, just said she had called our name, not. I have to agree with some other reviewers that their menus and patio tables sometimes aren't the cleanest and it can get pretty loud, but it's a very small price to pay for the yumminess and selection of their food. Their food ranges anywhere from breakfast to salads to vegetarian to comfort. I love their specialty drinks. It was the low point of what was otherwise a beautiful and fun day in McKinney, Texas. My wife and I decided to dine at this restaurant on the square in McKinney.. wish we could roll back time and make another choice. The main room was full of people all seeming to enjoy themselves but we were ushered to another section called "The Garage".. the waiter was ok but the tabletop felt like fly-paper.. sticky and not a good feeling. We ordered an appetizer, chips and queso, which showed up eventually. The queso was so cold it had begun to become stiff. Sent it back to be heated up. It finally made its way back after I asked the waiter to check on it. When the queso made it back to our table it was hot and the proper consistency.. but.. then the meal arrived one minute after the queso... I told the waiter to take the chips and queso off the bill as there was no point in an appetizer once the meal had arrived. He mumbled OK and departed with the chips and queso. I ordered the chicken fajitas... don't make the same mistake. They arrived on a blue plastic plate.. not a sizzling skillet. I am pretty sure they were prepackaged and possibly precooked. They had very little taste and were probably the lamest fajitas I have ever eaten... so bad that I did not finish them. To tortillas (all two of them) were the size of huge dinner plates and were also on their way to being cold. They were the largest tortillas I have ever been served with fajitas... they were bigger than a large Frisbee... no, they did not need to be that large. Will I ever eat there again... absolutely not. Back room, sticky table, cold and bad food.. no this place is off my list for good. As for my wife.. she had a salad.. pretty hard to butcher a salad.. she said it was OK but she will not return either. This is my second two-star review on Yelp, and, sadly, I think breakfast at Spoons has earned it. I started my experience with high hopes, based in part on reviews and in other part on my belief that a quaint and foodie-conscious place like downtown McKinney could not possibly produce a poor showing. I was wrong, much to my own disappointment. Let's start with the fact that I fully acknowledge the day after New Years in lovely downtown McKinney is a no doubt busy and busting with locals and visitors trying their utmost to get everything they can out of the precious couple of days of the holiday season. With that qualification, I will say that I still don't expect to have to strain and make eye contact with a server in order to get attention. Nonetheless, the inattentiveness wasn't that big of a deal. The lackluster breakfast I had was, however. I ordered Jose's omelet, substitute grits for potatoes, with a biscuit instead of toast...and coffee, of course. The timing of getting my coffee was perfect, very quick. But the diminutive plastic mug (barely enough to hold an actual cup of coffee) was cheap looking and disappointing in light of the fact that the too-few servers were understandably running around frenetically just trying to maintain, with little time to spare for fill ups. The coffee tasted a bit tart and plain, nothing special at all. Now, on to the grits. As a native southerner, born and raised in South Carolina, there's truly nothing worse than bad grits. I know, I know--this is Texas, not SC, so you should have ordered potatoes. And perhaps you're right. But I do believe, perhaps conservatively, that if you DO choose to serve grits in a quaint little Texas town, you should offer something at least a mark above what ultimately tasted to me like instant grits. They had no salt at all...really, about as bland as bland can get. Blandness can't be fixed all the time, and even my liberal addition of salt, butter, and pepper was unable to redeem these poor, neglected grits. If the absent flavor was a let down, then the overly watery texture was an insult. The grits needed less water and more love and attention. Perhaps yellow, stone-ground grits properly seasoned should be considered. On to the omelet. For starters, the eggs tasted like--and had the texture of--what I term "fake" eggs, i.e., the types of eggs one would expect from IHOP or another lower-end breakfast joint. Moreover, the tomatoes were tart; the bacon was soggy; and the whole thing lacked the slightest bit of salt or flavor of any kind. The pepper jack cheese on top was just...OK. Overall, very disappointing. Last of all, the biscuit tasted and looked far from homemade, and it was served not very warm. In all honesty, it tasted a bit like a Grands "butter added" biscuit that I haven't had since I was a kid. Again, nothing at all special. At $13.26, the price is still too much for the quality of what I experienced. Overall, the whole experience was unfortunate. If you are looking for "meh" and mediocre breakfast foods (or if you are on a low or no-salt diet), then this place is for you. However, if you're looking for a homemade-style, quality-driven, quaint breakfast place that adds its own mark and twists on an ordinary breakfast, I would urge you to skip Spoons and explore some other place. read more

I've always had consistently good food over the past decade. They have a wide variety of dishes to order, though I wish they had a weekly special. You've gotta try their desserts (always displayed next to the kitchen). Spoons is a busy restaurant on The Square, so be patient and expect a wait on weekends, especially. Worth the wait. Breakfast. Weekend breakfast. We haven't been out for breakfast much here in Big D and woke one Saturday morning with our mouths watering for eggs and extra-crispy, extra-thick, extra-bacony bacon. And coffee. Strong, black, rich, make-ya-dizzy with Kapow-caffeination. When we'd been up in McKinney a few weeks earlier Spoons had been pointed out to us by a few of the vendors with declarations of "Great breakfasts!" "Best breakfast!" So we pointed the meta-van north and set out to titillate our taste buds. We were seated within a few minutes of our arrival. We liked what we saw on the menu. Several egg breakfasts and baked items, too. We did that little dance couples do to see who is ordering what- to see if either are planning to order that less-practical-but-probably-extra-tasty something. In this case it was the pancakes. Our duel was a draw, each determined to have eggs - mine a two egg (poached) breakfast with the pig, his a farmers omelet. We added the pancake "for the table". Why not? The coffee should have foreshadowed the fizzle of the dream. It was weak, maybe instant. Blah. Less Kapow, more kerfuffle. The omelet was the best thing we were served. It was a good consistency and the ingredients were flavorful and generous in portion size. The poached eggs, on the other hand were overdone, which exacerbated the fact that the toast and browns were without much flavor. Even the pancake lacked entirely the sweet promise of naughtiness for which we were hoping. And the bacon was sad, emotionally and physically. It was floppy and lackluster and ... boring. I'm not sure how that happens. We'll be back to McKinney to visit the Farmers Market, the awesome Salsa Bar, and the Local Yocal...but Spoons is a utensil we'll be excluding from the table. read more

At least I thought it was going to be good as it was always busy when we previously walked by on other days. Well, here is my review. First after my girl friend and I ordering a couple of sandwiches for a late lunch, one of the female wait staff walked behind me and belched no further then one foot from my ear. Not our waitress, so I ask her if she was going to apologize. She said, "for what?" I said, "You just belched right into my ear!" Her, reply? She rolled her eyes and said, "Oh sorry" and went back to what she was doing. After that, we got out sandwiches. They were less than desirable as the turkey is processed meat, and only one slice on each sandwich. More lettuce and wrap than anything else. Very sad experience. I'll not be back. read more

This had been our go to breakfast spot for the last 10 years. With that said the last couple of times have been disappointing. My kids love their breakfast buffet on the weekends. But the last couple of visits they are either out of eggs and don't replenish until we are all almost finished with our meal, or the pancakes are burnt. As an out-of-towner visiting McKinney, I had no preconceptions about Spoons Café. The downtown neighborhood of McKinney has a lot of charm and seems to have a lot of things to do - we'll have to come back to try the rest. We visited on a Sunday morning and were told we'd have to wait 15 minutes to get a table, which would have been completely reasonable. Only a couple minutes later we were seated with menus in our hands. They have a breakfast menu, sandwiches and lunch fare, as well as a fairly extensive drink menu. Most of the drinks seemed to be of the typical brunch variety, such as mimosas. I had a bowl of grits, but my tablemates had more substantive meals including French toast, a cheesy potato dish, and omelets. Grits is an easy meal to make, but theirs is quite tasty; it didn't taste like it was instant, as their were hearty clumps of grits in each bite and they tasted fresh. I do wish they'd included some butter to go with my grits. I also tasted the French toast which was sweet and had the right amount of crunch. The bacon was a little overdone but bacon is always good. I had a cup of coffee with my meal. Spoons makes the coffee in large carafes and them brings them around to refill your mug. Overall, the service was great. We had to wait a few minutes to get our food, but for brunch that is no big deal because you want to take your time and enjoy a leisurely meal. The prices were about right: my meal was cheap, but my tablemates spent about $12 per head. I recommend Spoons in beautiful if downtown McKinney. read more

There's no shortage of good eats on the McKinney square nowadays. One of my favorites is Spoon's, which is one of those restaurants that has that odd but successful blend of hip/off-the-wall/breakfast/lunch/dinner/different in a good way vibe. I've only ever been for lunch, and on any weekday that I've been it's been pretty crowded. Despite that, though, the service has been pretty prompt and pleasant. The menu boasts tons of tasty options, many of which most of my co-workers swear by. My usual lunch buddy always orders the chicken salad sandwich, which tastes pretty amazing and comes with a decorative garnish of fruits and veggies that's aesthetic to your eyes and your mouth. I always go for the Sig Salad, which is comprised of baby spinach, golden raisins, crumbled blue cheese, strawberries, and a blush wine vinaigrette. It's just the right amount of sweet and pairs well with a cup of soup or a half sandwich if you're craving something more robust. Nowadays it seems that Spoon's is open even late enough for dinner most nights, and around the corner in the back boasts a sublet that's smaller, quainter, and kind of cafe-ish that specializes in To-Go orders. The only possible downside to Spoon's is the price. It's going to be up there with most of your quaint, well-to-do little home shops. Expect to pay no less than ten bucks for a whole meal for lunch, and no telling about dinner (as I have yet to be there for dinner). It's fresh, tasty, and delicious, but not exactly somewhere I can eat on a too-regular basis. All in all, though, Spoon's offers a great menu that is fresh and delicious. Considering the amount of die hard fans this place has on top of how busy it always seems to be, they've got to be doing something right. My only advice is try not to sit too close to the kitchen area when you're dining, otherwise you're going to gain five pounds just looking at the delectable desserts they have on display. read more

Staff is busy and could be a little more cozy in their table side manner, not bad just want that sweet waitress full of a small town spirit! This steak was basically average at best - but priced at really good. The pepper steak fries looked home cut but tasted average at best. I was talked out of the mashed potatoes and into the ones they fry for breakfast. I figured I didn't need it, but I wanted it. Bad choice. I was there for lunch but it tasted like they were cooked at 6am. I for once did not eat them all. I did add a bowl of pumpkin soup because I heard wild raves about it. I hate pumpkin soup. This one was edible though. Pretty decent honestly. So decent it wasn't exactly pumpkin soup anymore :(: But I would eat it again. Overall, based on the chicken fried steak and sides score - just average - 3 stars. Maybe I needed the inside info to order something different. But honestly all the other dishes at the 8 party table were pretty normal too. Several offered me tastes (wraps, meatloaf, etc) and all just tasted normal. If the price were $2 cheaper on the normal range I would rank higher - but at the prices and location and raves - I would expect a lot more. read more

Well, after reading other reviews, the hubby and I decided to eat breakfast in McKinney at Spoons. To begin with, we were really impressed. We immediately got a seat at the bar and received great service from our waitress. I opted for an omelet while the hubby opted for the traditional breakfast with sausage, eggs, toast, and fruit. Overall we were very impressed with the whole experience so why only three stars? 1. We had to ask for refills on coffee every time. We are huge coffee drinkers and we had empty cups a few times. 2. The hubby's eggs were served over medium (almost hard) even though asked for over easy. 3. The omelet was good but I have had better. Would we go back? It is beautiful to sit outside on a cool evening. Sometimes it is crowded and we must wait for a table, but usually the wait isn't over 10 minutes. Our waiter is always so kind and efficient. Great diner on the square in McKinney. Went with a group of 3 for a midweek lunch. No wait and attentive service. We had a salad, a soup/salad combo and French toast, and everything was delicious.
