I used to really love Spoons, I would eat here regularly, my favorite? The Southwest Tortilla Salad w/Chicken. While I always felt that the extra $2 for chicken was a tad pricey, given the small amount of meat he would add, I didn't complain because the salad itself was always chock full of kidney beans, tomatoes, olives, tortilla chips and shredded cheese....things have gone downhill. The last time I went (a few weeks ago) I noticed Derek was no longer making the salads, my salad was a bit lack luster, but chalked it up to new hired help, maybe a bad day, what have you. But I tried it again today..still no Derek (miss the smile), and again, a painfully lame salad. For $7 I got, a handful of greens, 5 slices of olives (yeah, I counted), 1 single small wedge of tomato, maybe 3 kidney beans, and what looks like about 0.5 ounces of chicken, (..oh wait, just found a tomato slice the size of a dime at that bottom) a small smattering of cheese, and 2.5 tortilla chips. Seriously? $7 at the carts i about the top end of what I'm willing to spend on lunch, and given the amount of grub I can buy at other carts, Spoons no longer measures up. Bummer. read more

In a sea of heavy, greasy food cart menus hides Spoons, hosting a menu of lighter food fare. My $7 soup & salad combo of pozole (I have to order it whenever I see it on a menu) and Southwest Tortilla salad was wonderfully made. What you order tastes exactly how you'd expect, if that makes sense. It doesn't have the say-it-out-loud "oh my god" flavor, but it made me happy. Their menu changes, so keep looking! read more

I needed food one day and it was pouring rain, and the closest option was the pod of food carts on 5th and Stark. About halfway down the block, I discovered Spoons. I looked at the menu and thought to myself, "It's raining. I'm feeling a bit sick. That sweet potato and ginger soup sounds perfect." Upon finding out that it wasn't cream-based, I ordered a bowl and brought it back to my office. They provided a spoon, but honestly, it wasn't necessary because I just ended up drinking it. Yummmmmmmmmmm soup and salad. I love the southwest salad. There isn't a ton going on, you can actually taste the lettuce and there are just enough ingredients to make every bite interesting. The soup is also awesome. I've had the hungarian mushroom soup, which is a comforting mushroom soup. There were tiny chunks of mushroom everywhere. It was delicious. I have also had the tomato soup, which was light and fresh. It was a chunky soup, rather than a puree. Lets not forget the hunk of bread that comes with your soup - or your soup and salad! I am such a fan of this food cart. I would eat here every day, if my pocket-book would allow it. read more

Not good, got a "wrap" and it fell apart immediately so I ended up eating it with a fork. The chicken is def not fresh it's that presliced tyson chicken, also had grey pieces. Not appetizing, very little flavor and mostly salad. Much better options litterally surrounding it. read more

One of my favorite places to grab lunch. I got my chicken ceasar wrap ($6) super fast I was really suprised, hope I didn't put ahead of anyone else. Sometimes I get avocado (an extra 75 cents). I believe they also give an enviromental discount as well if you bring your own container. My colleagues always give me grief because I walk in with this huge wrap. It's mostly lettuce--which I like a lot. If you're looking for a full breast of chicken in there, you'll be sadly disappointed. The guy who makes my wrap is super friendly. Everytime I go lately he seems to have a different girl in there with him. They never know what to charge, but it's a cart so he's standing a foot away from her and tells new girl what to charge. Maybe it defeats the purpose or maybe he just doesn't like handeling germy money while making my food. read more

Great cart in the 5th Ave pod. Their hours are somewhat restrictive, but the food is always fresh and tasty. As the title would suggest, they are primarily known for their soups, and they generally have four or five options available each day. They also have fresh salads; I find the seasonals and the southwest tortilla to be the best. Most of the salads can be ordered as a wrap as well. Additionally, they serve grilled cheese sandwiches. Spoons accepts Go Box tokens, and will give you a 50 cent discount if you bring your own to-go container. read more

This is definitely my favorite food cart! The service is always prompt, quick and very friendly! Everyday of the week you can grab a different delicious soup (housemade, might I add) - not only meat, but vegan and vegetarian options as well! I stopped by again Wednesday (1/18/12) to give the soup another shot. This crappy weather has me in the mood for soup all the time. I tried the Tomato Tarragon this time around and was pleasantly surprised. It was full of flavor and had body. It definitely hit the spot. My past experiences there have been similar. Sometimes it's hard to coax a lot of flavor out of certain types of soup and it really depends on what you like. I can't judge the whole menu based on just one soup. I'll try again. The guys who worked here were extremely friendly and accommodating, I asked for a custom salad (chicken, avocado and some greens), and they threw together a very tasty and fresh salad. However, they charged me $12 which was simply far too much for a food cart salad, especially the small portion size. I can't help myself. What started off to be "just another day at Spoons" became what I believe to be the best wrap I've had. Like, EVER. It's the Ultimate Veggie (I had it with Avocado and Chicken), and it's basically like a Greek salad but with some secret green sauce (not the avocado), and roasted red peppers. The chicken was tasty (not fatty), all the veggies were ultra-fresh, the ingredients didn't overpower the others and it was light but filling. I don't know if it's because I haven't been drinking for awhile, sleeping better and it's a fucking gorgeous day or the combo of it all, but this was like a little piece of heaven (that doesn't exist) in my mouth. It was pretty perfect. Plus, this shit was large (not too large), and I feel it has something to do with the following encounter last week, when I ordered the same thing: Me: Um, hi. I'll have the U.V. w/ A.C. please Me and Smiles: How bout that snow, huh? Crazy, right? Ya, so... In My Mind: (Nice smile, nice smile, nice smile, teeth, nice teeth, smile, teeth...Eyes) Me: All the soups are from scratch, riiiight? Smiles: Oh, ya. Of course it was raining cats and dogs during our one day in Portland. We were trying to be adventurous in our food selections, but who could possibly turn down a hot bowl of soup? We decided on the chicken barley soup, which comes in a cute wax-lined paper cup with a hunk of rustic bread. The guy behind the counter was friendly and clued us in on where to find shelter (hint: the bank/mall across the street has seating areas, couches, and coffee tables for your on-the-go dining pleasure). I love their weekly special vegan soup. Once I got the zucchini soup and it was delicious! Very creamy and vegelicious! I also tried their vegetarian ultimate wrap. It looks big but not very filling. At least for me and I'm a pig! I love the yogurt mustard sauce in the vegetables. Though I wish it was seasoned more with curry sauce or something like cumin or paprika... I don't know. Oh my god the seasonal strawberry champagne salad is freaking fantastic, not to mention the best grilled cheese I've ever had!

I really like this cart because they always seem to have a soup that grabs my attention as I walk by. The salads are really good too. Some days i'll just take the max down here to grab a salad to go before I am off to work. They are pretty large salads for only 5$. I have yet to try one of the wraps but am really tempted to soon! I had the thai coconut soup last time and it was killer! Love the big ol hunk of bread that comes with it, makes perfect for dunking ^_^ read more

It was a rainy chilly day- perfect for soup and this cart delivered! I had the chicken coconut curry and the flavors were delicious- just the right amount of warming heat without being too much. Plus, a lovely crunchy piece of french bread- all at a great price. My only complaint- not enough chicken. A few more pieces and this would have been 5 star. The soup here is SO GOOD! The varieties are surprisingly different from the normal soups that are usually served in restaurants. You could tell they were homemade because they had some substance to them. Not just watery leftovers from yesterday's special! I had a grilled cheese and it was cheesy perfection! I work two blocks away from spoons, I had never been there before and a co-worker recommended spoons for a good salad so I went to check it out on my lunch break. upon arriving at 2 o'clock the man in front of me in line was served but then I was told in somewhat of a rude fashion that they were closed. I said I was just going to order a salad (lettuce and dressing were talking about here...) but apparently that is to complicated of a meal to whip up without the cook book. 1. This is a lunch spot that closes at 2 apparently. 2. You work in the service industry, I do to, and ill tell ya that is pretty crappy service. Good soup, but I ordered a grilled cheese today and there wasn't much cheese on it to speak of. In parts of the sandwich the two breads were touching with zero cheese. A couple weeks ago I did hear the owner tell one of his employees to start putting less cheese on the sandwiches. I get the idea of keeping costs down, but when you say that within earshot of customers, it just makes you look greedy. Also, it makes your sandwiches SUCK. read more
