As a 47-year-old perimenopausal woman dealing with metabolic health issues, I came to strength training from a very different perspective than someone who already enjoys the gym or athletics. I had never strength trained before and was honestly intimidated by the entire experience. I worried about getting injured, looking foolish because I didn't know what I was doing, and whether the effort would actually produce meaningful results. I started training with Christian in late April, and I have been genuinely surprised by the progress I've made. Physically, I've dropped a clothing size in both pants and tops, and my DEXA scans show that I've increased lean mass and bone density while losing weight in a calorie deficit, which is especially meaningful to me at this stage of life. Beyond the visible changes, I've also seen improvements in several health markers, which was one of my primary goals going into this process. For me, strength training wasn't about athletic performance--it was about improving my long-term health. One of the biggest reasons I've been successful is the coaching itself. I have low blood pressure and can become lightheaded during heavier lifts, and I also need careful attention to form and knee positioning to avoid injury while still being challenged appropriately. I don't think I would push myself safely or effectively on my own. Christian does an excellent job of finding that balance between encouragement, proper technique, and progressive overload. After a year of dealing with back, hip and leg pain and getting nowhere with other PTs, I bit the bullet and made an appointment with this place after seeing the stellar reviews. I had just experienced another flareup and was feeling desperate. [[HIGHLIGHT]]They were able to get me in to see Dr. Shane quickly, and when I tell you that I felt like I was with a miracle worker.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We went through several motions during the intro session, and he was able to diagnosis my issue (piriformis syndrome and tight hips). He performed cupping and massage, and he was able to loosen up my stubborn hips. He then had me perform some PT exercises, and I IMMEDIATELY felt relief. I honestly couldn't believe it. I thought the relief would go away after a few hours, but it stayed for a few days. I've worked him for about 6 sessions now, and I've felt drastic improvements. He tailors the training session to my problem areas, and he doesn't increase my load too quickly, to make sure I don't reinjure myself (which had been happening before). On 9/9/2024 I was injured during a massage at Sports Performance Physical Therapy in Chula Vista. The LMT had her elbow in the intercostal space of my left anterior chest when I suddenly felt an incredible amount of sharp, stabbing pain. I cried out and requested that she remove her elbow from my chest. The pain in my left chest was excruciating. I was unable to use my left arm without experiencing an enormous amount of pain. Even breathing was painful. Coughing and sneezing were unbearable. When I woke up the next morning, the pain was severe. Based on my symptoms, I was afraid I had a rib fracture. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I contacted Cristianah Comaduran, Operations Manager of Sports Performance to notify her of the injury. She spoke with the LMT, who verified what happened. We stayed in contact over the next several weeks.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I informed her that I would be filing a claim with their liability insurance and would contact her once I was completely asymptomatic. For the next two weeks, the pain was severe. I was unable to work, do household chores, and help my 4 year son with the things he needed, like getting dressed, bathing, basic ADLs. I filed a short term disability claim through my employer (I'm an ICU nurse). The stipulation for payment is that the first two weeks are unpaid, and then 60% of earnings are paid. This was a great financial burden for my family. The consequences of this injury were costly with low income for the months of October and November. My pain continued to improve until I caught an upper respiratory infection (URI) that caused continuous coughing. The pain was back and it was severe. Each cough and sneeze was excruciating. Once the URI resolved, my pain improved. For two months, the pain and suffering was debilitating, not allowing me to work, exercise, take care of the household, and most importantly, my son. It caused sleepless nights because the pain medication I was prescribed did little to relieve my symptoms, which lead to chronic exhaustion. The findings of my MRI on 11/14/24, which was two months after the injury, showed asymmetric edema at the level of the left third sternocostal joint. Two months after the injury, I still had abnormal results which were consistent with my symptoms. My thoracic spine MRI from 2022 showed none of these injuries. My PCP's impression was that there was a sprain of costal cartilage subsequent encounter. He determined it was costal-sternal joint strain vs developing costochrondritis. Along with pain and suffering, I experienced anxiety and distress due to financial strain. The injury resulted in thousands of dollars of missed wages. In addition, I was unable to accrue paid time off and contribute to my pension and retirement fund. This set me back two months from being vested at work. When I returned to work, I had very little sick or vacation time due to the inability to accrue paid time off (PTO). In January of 2025, I called out sick for 3 shifts (36 hours) when I was sick with the flu. I did not have enough sick time to cover the hours missed. I also received a double occurrence for my absence, which was not cleared from my record until January of 2026. It was worrisome that despite returning to work, the effects of this injury continued to be a financial burden and was affecting my performance review at work. This incident has also resulted in out of pocket costs, such as co-pays and pharmaceuticals, not to mention I was never reimbursed for the massage that started it all!! Perhaps worse than everything, I had to borrow money from my parents, so there's an element of shame in addition to the pain, suffering, and distress. This injury has been costly in terms of lost wages/PTO accrual and out of pocket expenses, not to mention inability to contribute to retirement and inch closer to being vested at my place of employment. I submitted an incredible amount of documents to Sports Performance in attempt to file a claim against their liability insurance. They were extremely difficult to work with and despite my repeated efforts to present all documents they requested, my claim was denied. Total cost for lost wages and out of pocket costs: $20,224.09. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Because of this massage, I experienced pain, suffering, chronic exhaustion due to insomnia, anxiety, distress, and shame...and I didn't even get a fucking apology.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] read more

As a body builder, getting regular bodywork done is an absolute necessity. I'd been going to a different therapist for some time but it was a little too expensive to be going as often as I needed and hard to coordinate into my schedule. I found Sports Performance from a Google search and figured we'd give them a chance since they're closer to my house with more availability. We just had our appointments today and I'm so grateful to have taken the chance on them. The location is super easy to find with plenty of parking despite there being a crossfit and BJJ gym in the same plaza. Granted we went in the early afternoon but still. I have been an intern at Sports Performance since 2022 and for my almost two years here I can confidently say you won't be disappointed. During my time here, I have met many amazing providers who have given me the opportunity to observe their work. I have seen many clients come in from either being skeptical about going through physical therapy, having little faith in the process, or clients coming from terrible pt experiences in the past. By simply talking to the PTs at SP about their past injuries and concerns they have, I have seen them start to believe in their provider and SP. Each PT at SP listen to their client and get the whole story as to what irritates their injury, how did it start, what movements irritate them. They get the whole story to truly understand where the pain is and to develop a plan as to how they will treat their clients. They also work to maintain their clients overall fitness and movement of their body, so not just the parts of their body they originally came in for, but the body as a whole. Not only do they help their clients achieve their goals, but they educate the client as to what specific body part theyre working on and the treatment/plan they are doing to improve. Watching Dr. Jason, Dr. Shane, Dr. Morgan and Dr. Brandon work with their clients truly inspires me to become a PT like them one day. Especially Dr.Jason and Dr.Shane. I have observed these two the longest and they are amazing providers. Simply from the way they talk to their clients, you can tell that they are confident that they can help them and that their clients believe in them. These two always answer any questions I have, and even (if the client is comfortable) allow me to see exactly what they are currently working on with their client and share with me their clients background on their injury. From watching Dr. Jason and Dr. Shane work, I become inspired everyday I'm at SP to one day become a PT like them. In addition to the amazing PTs at SP, we have amazing client care specialist such as Alyssa and Alani who help every single client get the care that they need, and answer any questions current and new clients may have about SP. By listening to these two talk to the clients, you can tell that they want to help everyone that comes through SP to receive the care that they may need. AND two performance coaches/strech therapist Coach Sam and Coach Ryan who help their clients reach their fitness goals for either a sport or just to maintain their strength and agility. I came to these guys with severe chronic pain and I was ready to give up on life. The pain I was having more specifically, were cervical radiculopathy, frozen shoulder and thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS). I didn't have great expectations based on other places I'd been for other types of issues earlier in life. Surprisingly, I made incredible progress with the frozen shoulder that I regained range of motion in an arm that lived in a sling 24/7 due to the agonizing pain. That wouldn't have been possible without Dr.Katie's keen judgement on when and how to challenge the arm. Deep stomach breathing during sessions added immense progress for me, so ASK THE DOCS TO TEACH YOU and USE IT during sessions and homework. I have more work to do on my neck and TOS deal but am optimistic just as well. I think what separates this place from the rest is the brilliance of each employee, from the front desk staff, to the Docs and message therapists. Although I haven't utilized message therapy there, the profiles of those people are indicative of the same high caliber care the others deliver. Started with SP this past October and it has been awesome. I go to SP for their Massage Therapy program with Anise. The assessment over the phone is probably what led me to come in. To me I thought it would be just a hook to get your card info and flood you with info and their 'special' prices; it wasn't. Christianah (over the phone assessment), helped me pinpoint what I needed with the care they provided. She sent intake forms to fill out minimizing an extra step that you need to take upon arriving at a new place prior to receiving care. Upon arrival, everyone is very warm welcoming as soon as you step in their office. Christianah will cover all the questions you have from Prices, scheduling and care. The apt reminders via text are great too. Anise is awesome. She'll have a conversation with you prior to care on what you've been doing and what's currently bothering you. If you're not quite sure what care or the specific area that needs to be worked on, Anise will find it either during the conversation or on the table. She's very detailed on her approach, she lets you know what she plans on targeting during the session. After-care, Anise gives me homework; things to do to avoid being too broken which helps in between sessions. SP has definitely helped me keep my active lifestyle for the better. I wanted to find a place that fell in line with my goals. I've had surgery for FAI Cam impingement and wasn't too happy with the network PTs. Nothing against them, we just had very different goals and expectations, doing planks and glute bridges isn't going to get me back to power lifting weights. I was very cautious and skeptical but this place, and Dr Jason, is an entirely different ball game. They hit all my check boxes. Dr Jason surprised me with his vast amount of knowledge. He knew exactly what 5/3/1 was and modified the programming to suit my goals along with tissue massages to help alleviate some pain. I went from being unable to squat due from patella tendinitis to now being on track to hit previous PRs. He's given me confidence in my joints and i cannot recommend any other place. Not once did he try to discourage my goals and through constant communication im in the right direction. These people are legit MIRACLE WORKERS! I recently began a work out program and due to overuse developed plantar fasciitis. I didn't even know what this was except for debilitating 10/10 pain and me thinking I broke my foot. From the moment I submitted a request for a call, Alyssa was super helpful. She listened to all my symptoms, concerns, and understood why I needed help ASAP. She was able to get me in to be seen in 2 days. She is friendly, knowledgeable, and will direct you to the correct service(s) you may need with one of their many qualified therapists. They have multiple locations within SD County so you can pick which is best for you. I could not walk from my bed to the bathroom, I legit was crawling on my hands and knees to get there, and I also have a 2 and a 6 year old. So when my daughter asked me if we could go to the zoo, I cried not knowing when I'd be able to do this again. I was told by my doctor typical healing varies by person, but to estimate 4-6 weeks and as long as a 6 months! This seemed like an eternity to me as my lifestyle and motherhood do not allow me to just sit and raise my foot in hopes that it would heal quickly. I am so utterly thankful that I found Sports Performance and Karo, my massage therapist, who got me walking and moving in less than 2 weeks. She is amazing!! So knowledgeable, so skilled, and flexible when it has come time to schedule follow-up sessions to get me back to my full potential. I can now say I have little to no pain and am in the rehab portion of my sessions. She is giving me exercises to do to strengthen my foot and hopefully never be in the excruciating pain I was in. I have given birth twice and never use 10/10 to describe pain but this was BAD! I have referred friends and family members and will continue to do so because everyone here has been so friendly and AMAZING all around. I am an active Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioner, as such, we become accustomed to high levels of pain and injuries. Most of the time, we (I) just shrug it off and train through the pain. I finally hit that pain point where I knew I needed help. I was losing sensation, motor control, and strength in my left arm, pectoral, and shoulder. My range of motion was very painful and limited- I made the call, scheduled the first available appointment and saw Dr. Nick. INTENSE. An Hour of Intense and targeted treatment and I could feel my hand again- no more tingly numbness- no more shooting pain down my arm. Relief. After four days of numbness, it was such a relief to feel my hand normal again. I highly recommend that if you are injured and want to keep training, go see them- for a Dr to tell me- "I want you to train Jiu Jitsu tomorrow" meant that he understood the mindset and sedentary rest was not an option, instead he worked on improving my condition and showing me some basic exercises to open my neck up. That's is real medicine, not a pill. read more

I've been a client of SP for years and love all of them!!! However, this is a special shout-out to their newest member Maritza! I went in for a prenatal massage and got way more than I bargained for. I fell 15 years ago and have a cyst at the end of my tailbone. Most doctors I've seen over the last decade have said there's nothing I can do except "sit on a donut" for the rest of my life. Maritza discovered a "tangerine-sized ball of scar tissue" in the same area and started to break it up. It's going to take a while but I'm so relieved there's something I can do about it now, which will for sure relieve some of my sciatic/piriformis pain during and after pregnancy. I have been going to Sports Performance for several years now for injuries related to running and various aches and pains. I would never go anywhere else because all the therapists and staff here are amazing! Dr. Chris was the one I went to the first time I was injured and had gone to a "regular" doctor. He made sure I my shoes, my form was correct and that I was doing the necessary things to help me be the best and help me continue my training for my 1/2 marathons. I have continued to come back because the physical therapists here are amazing! They listen, they take the time to help you recover from injuries or just maintenance. I'm a hairstylist and I also lift weights as my form of exercise. During quarantine, I've been experiencing more pain in my wrist due to more physical activity. He is incredibly knowledgeable on a variety of topics ranging from the skeletal-muscular system to power/olympic lifting to mobility exercises. I had a neck injury in March from improper form during one of my training excersises. My friend who is studying to be a physical therapist recommended I visit Sports Performance. I worked with Dr. Katie and she did not dissapoint. She did a lot of tests to identify the problem in my neck and provided me excersies to do at home so that I can improve my form and posture. About 3 weeks ago, I woke up with pain in my shoulder (it hurt to lift my arm so I assumed it was my bicep). I came to SP, but this time, I worked with Dr. T. Wthin the first 10 minutes, he was able to find the problem area and mentioned it was not a bicep but my rotator cuff injury.
