Fun crowd and atmosphere! I have stopped in several times when I visit Strawberry. Most recently I hung out upstairs to practice pool a bit. It was nearly empty on a Friday which I found surprising because the previous night on Thursday there was a decent crowd. This is a pretty laid back, no frills place. It's nice that it's next to the Inn and Bandits so you get a little variety. There's plenty of outdoor seating too and a basic bar food menu. In previous visits I've met some interesting people. Great hole in the wall local bar. My finance and I came in after traveling in from the valley. We just wanted a quick bit and a couple drinks. The food was good, we both got bison burgers and fries. We ordered cheese curds for an app and those were amazing. Drinks were good and well poured. The service was quick and our bartender was nice. Pros: The restaurant/bar has a fun style and sits in a nice location in Strawberry, AZ. The food is delicious and the Cooks are doing a terrific job with preparing meals. The reason I rated so low is due to the Cons outweighing the pros!! Cons: in a matter of sitting at the bar for 5 minutes, I observed a bartender (Carol) that was incredibly rude to not just one but several other customers. She was verbally aggressive and makes it very clear that she does not enjoy her job or being around customers any longer (if ever). The attitude made the entire side of the bar extremely uncomfortable and everyone agreed that they will not be going back when passing back through. The owner should really look into the matter because she is single handily pushing the customers and profits out the door (if the owner is even concerned). She gets mad over the music selected from the juke box and does not think twice before making snarky comments to paying customers. The Cons are unfortunate and maybe something will change one day and we'll all be more excited to go back for great food and fun memories! read more

My son and I did a quick trip to strawberry for hiking and just to get out of town. We stayed at the strawberry Inn. We ate dinner at sportsman chalet. The staff was so welcoming. Was headed to the PieBar but since parking was full we decided to grab a bite and beer here. It was a good experience but wasn't anything crazy exciting. A good place if you want to a beer and i know there's at least one pool table. Bison burger and the chicken sandwhich were decent and we thought they weren't too bad. We stopped by after hiking from Pine and had our two dogs with us. The bartender said it was okay for them to come in. We had an elk burger and sloppy Joe, both of which were very good. Someone call Bar Rescue!!! This place is abysmal. The staff is inept, rude, and overwhelmed by the most basic of tasks. For example: greeting a table, or person entering the bar. That's apparently outside of their capabilities. I was unable to try the food since the server never came back to take my order(after 20 minutes with maybe 10 people in the place). We are staying in Strawberry for the summer and got in late, so decided to find somewhere nearby to eat. Yes, this is a bar, but they allowed us to bring the kids (4 of them) and the dog and had great outdoor seating. It had a fun decor, good food, and great service. I wish I'd gotten our server's name, but didn't - she was pretty darn good though. My husband at the elk burger and thoroughly enjoyed it, I had brats with sauerkraut - excellent, and the kids all had bacon cheeseburgers and fries. We also had a combo basket of rings, fried cheese, and fried zucchini and it was all good. Just a fun, relaxed atmosphere with good food. We will definitely go back. Prices for food were pretty cheap, which I liked. But, we came in for Fish & Chips which we heard was good but found out they only served it on Fridays and our 2nd choice was the pot roast special that they didn't have. All that is fine but when wen ran out of things we liked on then menu and my friend asked if they were still serving food next door at 9 pm, the lady says no. It seemed like a biker's bar when I went here. I was told they have really good burgers here. I watched the servers bring burgers to diners and they all seemed marginal to me. So, we decided to try a bacon cheeseburger, an elk burger and a buffalo burger. I prefer non-beef burgers if they're on the menu. The elk burger was really gamey and I've had elk before. If you are an attractive female, and you get the female bartenders, you will get accused of being drunk and they won't serve you. It's hilarious bc we hadn't had ANYTHING to drink at all all day! I think it depends on who is working. The bartender, Heather, treated myself and my 4 girlfriends like absolute trash. We walked in and you could tell immediately that she didn't want us to be there. We had been there the night before and had so much fun, but the second day we went we walked straight out because of the way we were treated. I first avoided stopping here as I was looking for a last-chance convenience store or gas station before meeting up with friends at a nearby campground. My intention was to bring extra ice and beer to the campers who had already been roughin' it for an overnight. At first glance, I couldn't determine whether the Sportsman's Chalet would be my best bet. I took a detour through what looked like a main street to Strawberry and wound up on a dirt road in the middle of nowhere. So back to the Chalet it was! They do have a neon sign advertising their ATM inside the bar. I unsuccessfully tried for several minutes to figure out why the ATM was refusing me. Finally, a friendly patron (undoubtedly a local and a regular) flagged down an employee who could service the ATM. After quite a long wait, the ATM was back on line and full of cash, so I could at least get some money for my purchases. Ice was outside and next to the parking lot and rung up on a separate cash register in a shed full of canned goods that might be Strawberry's only convenience mart. For beer I had to go back to the bar (fortunately, they have a package liquor license). I will say that at $10 for a six-pack of Coors, it's no bargain. So at least I was able to accomplish my mission and not show up emptyhanded at my friends' campsite. But this was a lengthy detour through the Twilight Zone where I must've looked like a City Slicker and stepped into a rift in the space-time continuum. Everything and everyone here seemed to move sooo sloooww. They were helpful enough, but I must've come long after Happy Hour began, and would've probably had a better experience if my butt was planted on the barstool and I had nowhere else to go. read more

My friends and I went to Sportsman for New Years Eve and we had an absolute blast, music was good, food was delcious, and drinks were mixed well. Loved the pool table and the option to select your own music on the jukebox. We've already talked about coming back. 10/10 experience, would recommend to anyone passing through. read more

In the dictionary, if you look up dive bar, it should say "see Sportsman Chalet". Not to say the place is gross or dirty or anything, it's just very Arizona mountains, laid back, casual, and no-frills. Example: I asked, "how's your chili?" The waitress replied" "It's great-- It's from a can, but great!" Not to say the menu isn't fairly broad with some legit home made stuff. Loved this bar! Called after the other restaurants/bars were closed in Pine and was pleased to find this little gem. Tim was AMAZING and truly cared about his customers providing them with a great place to hang out. He went out of his way to serve us, even though it was passed closing time. We were greeted by a very unfriendly woman who RELUCTANTLY took our order when we were one of only two tables. I mean really?! You've got better things to do at work, then make tips? So we order 12 wings for the table, our entrees and a large pitcher of beer. The lady comes with 2 plates (for the table of 8). We politely ask if we can get some more plates so people can eat wings and she rolls her eyes and heavily sighs.She comes back about 5 minutes later (which, it really shouldn't take that long to grab a few plates) and she brings 2 more plates. So I guess that meant we were to share the plates.... We liked the wings so we were going to order 12 more, but she was nowhere to be found. We waiter about 15 minutes and got fed up and walked to the bar to get her attention. We asked for another pitcher of beer and another 12 wings, we asked politely I might add. The food came and for the most part it was mediocre, again, we weren't expecting much considering where we were trying to eat. Two people in our party got the "Monster Burrito" which was HUGE but when you cut it open, the only thing inside was ground beef. Literally, no cheese, nothing else, just a MONSTER portion of ground beef. The "Chicken Sandwich" we ordered was a quarter inch thick formed rubber patty. Literally, it WAS NOT CHICKEN!! It was disgusting, and to call it chicken is a blatant lie. Another person in our party got Chicken Tenders, and those were real chicken , so what I don't get is why they don't just put one of those on the sandwich?! Anyways, the lady didn't show up again until we were all done eating, and she goes to clear the dishes. She goes to grab two dishes(which isn't alot to hold for a waitress) and she dropped both of them , heavy dishes mind you, on my head. She didn't just drop them and graze my head. SHE BROKE HEAVY DISH-WARE ON MY HEAD. And got all the food scraps and condiments onto my clothes and my girlfriend's clothes. (Which turned out to be ruined, even after we treated them with stain remover as soon as we got home) So, I am actually a VERY easy going guy and I understand mistakes happen... But NEVER have I ever had someone break 2 (expletive) plates on my head. The thing that pissed me off even more was that she never really apologized "Woops did I get you on the head?" No concern really or anything. She disappeared to get a broom to clean it up, but never brought us a wet towel or anything to clean our clothes. Then she got our bill. Really, this happened.... She comes to the table with the bill and its over 100$ for us 8 people. NO DISCOUNT, NO REDUCTION, NOTHING Like I said, I am easy going, but I am mad. One of the people in our party called the lady over and said "Listen, I am in the customer service industry and when you make a mistake and a serious one like that, where you broke a plate on someone's head, the least you could do is take his meal off the bill." I love this place in Strawberry!! I can walk down from my cabin and socialize with my fellow locals and those who visit from out of town. The staff are amazing and fun. They always smile and provide exceptional service. If you are a local or you are passing through our little town, you need to stop in for a bite to eat and perhaps a drink or two. I love all the writing on the walls from happy customers that came and made an awesome memory here. They are fun to read. I heard this place had amazing "fish fry Friday". So being in town I wanted to try. When I first arrived no one really greeted me and didn't know if I should seat myself or what?? I had to ask, and one of the two ladies said, "We don't have a hostess"... ok I guess that meant seat myself. I sat there for a what seemed a very long time without getting any service. Again I had to get up and go to the bar where most of their customers were , and let them know it's my first time here. Do I need to order @the bar... or?? I live in Payson (15 miles away) and had come in here, a few times, 12 yrs ago when a friend was running karaoke. It is a rural bar, woodsy feeling. I felt comfortable! They have TONS of friendly graffiti written and carved on the walls. I went up to Sportsman Chalet today, with my boyfriend, to see an old friend who was working a special event. They had 2 live bands playing out in the front parking area (which was roped off to allow for more patrons outside), and they would alternate playing between sets. Today's event was for an Arizona motorcycle club. And there were a lot of big and burly bikers there. But there was a lot of awesome bikes too! :) Everyone was friendly. I went upstairs, played a game of pool, and wrote my name on the wall. Stayed for a few hours, had a couple vodka-cranberries, and had a good time seeing that old friend of mine! The prices were great! Compared to the Irish pub I went to last night in Phoenix. I would go back most definitely. If only to be able to write on the wall again! read more

We were looking for an adventure when we drove past the Sportsman Chalet and saw a man enjoying a drink on the second floor patio. Once we noticed the NASCAR racing schedule (and not an NFL schedule), we knew we had found our place. Little did we know how right we were. We were instantly greeted with the locals enjoying the on tap special, PBR. "I'll have one of those" was our 'When in Rome' mentality. The waitress was more than hospitable taking our order right away. When we asked if we could sit up on the second floor patio, she was more than willing to oblige. She told us our drink order would arrive on the second floor via the hydraulic dumb waiter. Awesome! The second floor was a tribute to past patrons, as the walls and ceilings were sharpied. Not only did you have your classics like "Jim Hearts Pam," but under rated classics like phone numbers and Irish Limericks. As our first order arrived on the dumb waiter, we received a note that read " I'll be up to take your order, honk when ready." That is when we noticed the bicycle horn attached to the dumb waiter. Honk, Honk. Our second drink order arrived with our silverware, our drinks, and a single black sharpie. We looked at each other, wondering if this was for real, as there could really be little doubt as to what we were supposed to do with the sharpie. Clearly, we had to leave our mark, and we did- on the ceiling. The food was fantastic and the atmosphere made the stop totally worthwhile.
