What a great find this place was! Usually when we visit Payson we eat at either Mackey's or Fargo's but I had to stop at the Tesla charger and this place is located in the same plaza so we stopped in for a bite to eat while the car was charging. I ordered the Backwoods burger and subbed a black bean patty and I opted for steak fries. The burger was definitely top 5 burgers I have ever eaten. The black bean patty was something special whatever sauce is on this thing really brought out all of the flavors. The addition of the sautéed jalapeños really set this burger off as they had an amazing flavor profile. I'm serious when I say that I would make the 85 mile trek from Gilbert to Payson just so I can have this burger. We finished up our lunch/dinner with the Mogollon Monster dessert, which is an M&M skillet cookie topped with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, and caramel drizzle. Of course that was really good too, how can you go wrong with a skillet cookie?! If I may make a slight suggestion, instead of topping the cookie with vanilla ice cream, how about blue cookies & cream "Cookie Monster" ice cream given the name of the dessert? The only criticism I have of this place is that the service was a bit slow. After we finished the dessert we sat at the table for about 15 min. before I finally got up and told our server we were ready to go. But, the burger was THAT good to where I have to give this place 5 stars. read more

Took my friend to her birthday dinner tonight. She had the turkey melt which was generously filled with meat and perfectly grilled. I had a the delicious Zona salad with the protein choice of pulled pork. The zesty ranch on the side was so good that I asked for another. Ricky, our server was very friendly and attentive. He served a yummy fresh baked cookie topped with ice cream and whipped cream complimentary for dessert. This is a sports bar and restaurant with many TVs. We like coming here for drinks and their chicken wings. There are different flavors and the ones we have tried do not disappoint. There are lots of televisions in the bar area. A fun lace to watch your favorite sports. Besides the bar area there is a nice sized restaurant if the bar scene is not to your liking. read more

The name is perfect and this place is pretty cool. The menu is bar and grill food to a tee. Were were impressed they had cauliflower crust pizza. It's pretty good too. My wife loved the naked wings and they were presented beautifully. The server was attentive and had a good sense of humor. We felt welcome even though we probably didn't look like locals. While glamping up in Payson, we came into town for my birthday meal. I ordered the buffalo chicken sandwich and it was awesome! My boyfriend got the fish n chips and also really enjoyed it. Servers were friendly and they allow dogs on the patio which was perfect for our pup! They have a bar inside, indoor seating, and a large outdoor patio. Man this Dirty Verde is one of the top 5 burgers for me. The flavor was unbelievable. I have never tasted anything like it. The peppers on it make it taste like there is actually chili on your burger. We split it but it was soooooo good. The BBQ sauce (I'm not a BBQ gal) was delicious I was worried with the low reviews but we travel and eat a lot and it was good. I'll go back for sure. This was my 2nd time at backwoods. We came back because we loved the food and the drink specials were good (and well made). The server was friendly and attentive. Thought we'd try this place. We usually go to another bar & grill but this was more convenient at the time. Server was sweet and friendly. It was a holiday weekend and they were transparent about the time the food would take, which we appreciated. Once the food arrived, not good. The chicken cheesesteak was dry, the hoagie was obviously microwaved and tough and tater tots tasted like they had freezer burn. read more

Stopped in looking for a meatball sub but it's no longer available so I went with the H&H Burger (bacon, BBQ sauce, crispy onions) which was very good and substantial - but messy to eat. My only regret was that I didn't slice it in half before eating to make it easier to handle. Steak fries were good. I sat out on the patio which was comfortable in the evening but is on the south side of the building so it'll get some sun. It does have both covered and uncovered tables. Service was fast and attentive, I was seated by my waiter, food came out quickly, etc. Beyond the burger I got a recommendation for the ACL Melt, so I may try that in the next few days while I'm in town. read more

All of their TVs are glitchy. Literally herky jerky images, like skipping frames or something. Terrible. Unwatchable. It's been like this for a long time. Need to get it fixed. Tots are good. Dog friendly patio with water station is nice. Turkey melt was just ok, a bit too much breading. Drinks were weak. read more

Great service, Brandon was awesome. We had the Club sub and ALT Turkey melt with tater tots. Both meals were delicious with plenty of meat. Tater tots were crispy! Large dinning room so we did not feel cramped. Great job Backwoods. read more

Thought we'd try something new in Payson after our hike. Really not sure why there's so many mixed reviews. There were two sides. One more of a bar section the other for one geared more for eating. Lots of tvs on both sides with a mixture of sports. Food was delicious and staff was attentive and friendly. Prices were not outrageous. Would return on another trip. read more

Our first time here and it will most definitely it be our last! We found this gem while staying in Payson for the long weekend. The atmosphere was fun, very clean and the restaurant itself has an ample amount of booths and tables. Our server was prompt, friendly and helpful. the food was so delicious! We both had dinner salads that were huge, fresh and tasty. The burgers were cooked perfectly, so juicy and flavorful. And huge! Even the fries were above par! Stoped in because they were playing a football game I wanted to see in their dining area. Not a lot of ambiance, but clean inside. Waiter was full of personality with awesome service awareness. Good job! Food, hard no! Almost inedible due to way too much grease. I had the southwest dip, my friend had the ancho chili lime turkey sandwich. Also, equally as bad. This is the best restaurant and bar in Payson! Jason and Matt provide amazing service. We ordered tons of appetizers and entrées, and everyone tried to eat a bite of everyone's meal, because everything was so perfect! All of our drinks were perfect! To go order. Hunter took my order, brought me a water with lemon (which most places don't do for to go orders). He was friendly and efficient in processing my order. Took my food home and everything was quite tasty. I will return because the food and service were both excellent. read more

Great food, delightful menu, good service, and nice atmosphere. The only reason I don't give it a 5 is because the employees keep the temperature down very low and the central fan system on very high, with frigid air blowing relentlessly on you. So wear a parka in there, and not just in the winter months. We had to get our food to go last time because we were so miserable. I would guess they do that to keep the kitchen staff comfortable. read more

AVOID THIS PLACE! Filthy everywhere, tables, floors, restrooms, etc.... We ordered burgers, chicken wings, and sodas. Burger buns were very stale, burgers were hockey pucks, lettuce was soaked in grease. Fries were soggy and cold. Wings were rubbery and undercooked. Even the Dr Pepper tasted nasty, like dirt. My boyfriend and I were driving back from Flagstaff, staying in Pine, and we were craving pizza. We wouldn't make it back in time for anything to still be open in Pine, so we drove to Payson and ordered a pizza to-go. Mind you, we had a 20 min drive back to our house in Pine, and the pizza was STILL amazing after that. We were starving so we didn't even heat it up. We ordered the meat pizza -- initially I thought the chorizo would be a little weird, but boy was I wrong. The toppings were plentiful. We got the jalapeño ranch on the side and I thought it was such a great addition to the pizza. It was close to their closing time, so the restaurant was empty but everything was very clean, the restrooms were spotless. My boyfriend chatted it up with the server taking care of the order and he was very friendly! This will definitely be one of my go-to spots while traveling up north! read more

For my meal, I had eggs, toast, and sausage -- everything tasted homemade, like something your mom would whip up in her kitchen on a Sunday morning. Truly comfort food at its best. The service was great -- friendly and welcoming -- and the inside was exactly what you'd expect from a small-town café: super cute, quaint, and full of charm. If you're passing through, this spot is definitely worth stopping for. Delicious food, kind people, and that cozy hometown feel!

We ordered a double smash burger with bacon (an extra $2 charge) along with tomatoes, lettuce, and onion. The burger arrived with no bacon and none of the listed veggies. We also ordered a triple smash burger with cheddar cheese and tomatoes, lettuce, and onion -- again, none of the veggies were included. We also ordered a mashed potato bowl with chicken, corn, and brown gravy, but there was no brown gravy in it at all. Even though a lot of our order was missing, I will say the food itself still tasted good. The biggest issue, however, was the customer service. The young girl working there, who looked to be around 16 years old, was extremely rude and snotty. When I asked for plastic utensils, she replied, "We do not have any." I asked how we were supposed to eat mashed potatoes and gravy without utensils, and she shrugged and said, "Ma'am, we are a bar, we do not have it." I responded that I've ordered takeout from many bars before and they always provide plastic utensils. She then sarcastically replied, "Good for you, have a nice day." I tried speaking with who I believed was the manager (he nodded when I asked if he was), and while I was explaining the issue, the young employee continued interrupting and talking over me. Another waitress overheard the conversation and quickly returned with plastic utensils, proving they did in fact have them available. The employee then changed her story, saying she "didn't know" if they had utensils and claimed she was super sweet to me(not rude). There is no reason an employee should be speaking to customers this way. She clearly needs additional customer service training before handling customer interactions on her own.
