My partner and I are both vegan and they had some really great vegan options that didn't just seem as if they were there to be a placeholder, if you know what I mean. The dishes were thoughtful and the presentation was lovely. The vegan beef curry was so amazing that I was shocked at how delicious it was. My only complaint is that the macaroni was way too greasy that that the grease was leaking out of the cardboard container. Maybe use less oil next time and I will be five stars. read more

I don't even know where to start with this place. My boyfriend and I just moved to Raleigh from out of state, and went to chapel hill to venture out and explore our new state. Stopped in at spotted dog because we needed a dog friendly restaurant, and our expectations were exceeded on every level. We had to sit outside since we had OUR spotted dog, Fly, with us and there happened to be a lot of construction going on in the street. Service by Arman was so amazing, didn't even notice the excavator next to us. Had a great appetizer, lovely bubbles, and the main dishes were outstanding... cheesesteak and pasta already were absolutely out of this world. This place is (slightly) pricy but pretty worth it for all the vegan options. (I paid $19 for my lunch of vegan Rueben, fries, and fried pickles.) The vegan Rueben was just ok in my opinion but the tempeh on it would've been amazing as a BLT. I absolutely love this place. Fantastic drinks, great service, and so many good options. I recommend getting the puppy ciao for the table. The curry is one of my favorites and the bumpy chicken salad and Rover meets Charlie are also delicious. I also recommend any drink with The Flying Pepper Tabago Pepper infused vodka (made by Fair Game Beverage Co in Pittsboro!). My favorite is the flying mule. (3.5 stars) The Spotted Dog is a place that wouldn't really make sense outside of Carrboro (or, perhaps, Asheville). The name evokes a well-worn neighborhood bar, and while this is a bar with the requisite wood and brick, it's well-maintained and adorned with local art. No, the dog theme is literal: nearly everything on the menu has a canine connotation. In addition, there is a strong vegan-friendly bent. Add to that the building's triangular shape, and if nothing else, the Spotted Dog stands out. But there is more than just novel design/branding here: the menu selection gives some separation from the pack as well. You can find everything from seafood (crab cakes, fish and chips) to Mexican and Asian-influenced specials to classic sandwiches in both meat and meatless iterations. For our first visit, my wife and I went with the radical rooben (tempeh, avocado, and the usual Reuben accoutrements), the Carolina crab cake sandwich, and an order of puppy ciao (a Mediterranean artichoke/olive/spinach/cheese dip). The dip was tasty, and several layers of flavor came though at once. My crab cake sandwich didn't skimp on the crab, and the hint of bourbon made for an interesting twist. While my wife enjoyed the rooben (it wasn't a greasy mess, as Reubens sometimes are), I found the tempeh a poor facsimile for corned beef. All told, the food was considerably better than average bar fare. Unfortunately, while the staff were friendly, service at The Spotted Dog was quite slow. Fellow patrons were few and far between when we visited on a Saturday afternoon, yet we wouldn't have guessed from the wait times. Pricing here is a bit mystifying as well. A crab cake sandwich and a side for $9.50 was certainly affordable, as were several other menu options. But the vegan rendition of the crab cake is actually more expensive than the real deal, and some of the lunch features ($13.50 for vegan pozole verde, $13.95 for fish tacos) are definitely a stretch. The Spotted Dog is intriguingly funky, and chances are, you will find something worth trying here. Whether you are willing to wait for it, on the other hand, is another story. read more

As a vegan, this place is a godsend! Hands down the best restaurant in the Chapel Hill/Carrboro area to go to if you're vegan or vegetarian! So many options that include imitation meat and cheese! I've been here several times, and the service for sit-down has always been above average. Sometimes when they get a bit busy, their customer service goes down - but that's totally understandable. I've noticed that sometimes when I order to-go they may get a bit sloppy with preparation/presentation. Once they only gave me about half a side portion (I know because I've been here and ordered the same thing many times) and once they got my order wrong - but they were totally willing to fix it and give me another entree. I'm also a huge fan of their cocktails! They've got some great stuff at the bar! They have a shaded patio area so you can bring your dog if you want, and there's no lot *specifically* owned by spotted dog, but there are a couple public lots right nearby and on the street so parking is no issue at all! read more

Our experience was absolutely terrible. We chose the vegan chicken salad sandwich and it was horrible. It must have had 1/4 cup of sugar, and I am not exaggerating. I mentioned the concern to the server who brushed it off saying it was her favorite. I mentioned it to the person clearing the table who looked like management and simply said "must have been a bad batch". I have rarely had a restaurant take so little interest in my opinion or in making sure we were satisfied. I understand the parking is not something they can easily change, but be aware the curbside parking is inconvenient. I never have a problem parallel parking- but it's nearly impossible when the narrow street has a lot of traffic. As far as the food, I was very disappointed. I arrived on time for my curbside pick up. I ordered 1 beef hot dog chili cheese and 1 beef hot dog Carolina style. Both hot dogs came out chili cheese, the staff member was well aware but instead of making my order correct- he said he added the ingredients in the bag for me to do it myself.... However I didn't want to add mustard, slaw and onion on top of a chili cheese dog. The parking was so inconvenient I didn't want to wait for him to have it remade (which he never offered). I was extremely disappointed to find the hot dogs were not even warm.... But cold (bun, beef frank, the chili- everything)...
