We were in line at Red's and estimating an hour to order so we decided to go across the street where there was no line. When we were done eating the folks ahead of us in line at Red's still had about 20mins before ordering. But on to Sprague's review... lobster roll was huge and excellent. And they also serve steamed lobster which Red's does not. Steamed while you wait and it was excellent! Their homemade lemonade was also delicious! Sprague's is to Red's Eats as Gino's is to Pat's. Or vice versa. I'm not really sure. But one thing that is certain, you can't go wrong with either lobster roll destination while in the quaint downtown area of Wiscasset. When you drive down Main Street, you'll immediately see a huge line forming outside of Red's. If you're anything like me, you'll scoff, look around for an alternative, and see a smaller line outside of Sprague's, complete with a sprawling seaside patio, and forget Red's Eats ever exited at all. During McDonald's heyday, Burger King made a fortune from opening up restaurants as close to the Golden Arches as they could. Perhaps this was the tactic with Sprague's, but make no mistake, these lobster rolls hold their own. They're pretty bare bones with simply a buttered split top roll and a mountain of lobster meat, but at $15 with heaps of comfortable seating and waterside views, you really can't go wrong. I imagine Sprague's is bit more desirable than Red's Eats for those with toddlers in tow, as they have many more options than just simply lobster. Their menu also features burgers, french fries, fish sticks, etc... And from experience being a toddler at one point in my life, what knee high human doesn't love a good fish stick? No matter which side of Main Street you're on, you're living life right. Happy eating! read more

Great outdoor seafood experience! Not a lot of parking but we hit it right and the season is just starting to get going so we were lucky, husband got the clam fritter platter and I got a Maine Crab Roll with their lobster and clam chowder, oh my. Everything was fresh, hot and delicious. Fresh sweet crab meat and a ton of it, plus the chowder was loaded with lobster and clams. Great fries, the clam fritters were the best we have had anywhere. The pier was a bit windy but it just added to a great outdoor dining experience in Maine. Seriously good! read more

Tourist trap. Horrible service. You have to ask for everything little thing from utensils and wet towels. The lobster they promise is 1.25lbs - however it is a true switch & bait. The lobster you get is something like 0.75lbs. Plus they charge a deposit fee for lobster crackers and don't even tell you about it. Truly horrible experience. I had never been to Sprague's. I wondered why there are no lines for their lobster roll and other items, while at Red's Eats (on the other side of Route 1), waiting for a lobster roll can take 45-60 minutes. My wife and I decided last year to do a side-by-side and compare the next time we were in Wiscasset. Our next chance ended up being Memorial Day weekend on Saturday. We went to Sprague's first since there wasn't a line and we could see that Red's probably would take 45 minutes. We both went with the lobster roll and a soda. The lobster roll was just ok. Since we've already had four lobster rolls thus far this lobster roll season, Sprague's was probably #5 behind the one from Miss Brunswick Diner in Brunswick, Day's Crabmeat and Lobster in Freeport, Bob's Clam Hut in Kittery, and the Lobster Shack at Perkin's Cove in Ogunquit. Sprague's version of the New England summer classic had a slightly odd flavor. I characterized it as metallic, my wife just "not that good." While previous reviewers mentioned Sprague's using mayo, our rolls didn't come mixed with any mayo, which I actually like, although not overdone with mayo. Red's, on the other hand, comes with mayo on the side if you ask for it. After crossing over and standing in line at Red's, we were now clear why people wait in line for their heaping lobster roll, with drawn butter, at that. If waiting is an issue, but you are jonesing for a lobster roll, Sprague's will fit the bill in a pinch. If you can wait, and you should if you are making a day of it heading down the coast, take an hour, chat with the people in line, as Red's is an experience worth having. read more

The outdoor facility is fantastic, but the food was weak. For the prices, portions were miniscule. I don't think anyone in our group of 9 was impressed with what they got. My crabcakes were pre-formed and mostly filler. They clearly just buy them cheap and frozen and through them in the fryer and charge $14 for 2 with fries. It's a tourist trap. Like us, you may be about 40 minutes into waiting in the line at Red's Eats, staring longingly across the street to the line-less shack at Sprague's, wondering, "Is this REALLY worth the wait? Should I skip the madness and just eat the lobster roll at Sprague's?" Hard question to answer. We were lucky enough to eat at Red's two days prior, but decided to skip the hour plus long lines and see if Sprague's could compare. The smaller portions (but comparably cheaper price, about $3 less) do rob you of the "wow" factor that comes with about 2 lobster's worth of meat overflowing from the bun at Red's. But quantity aside, five separate diners had a hard time deciding if one roll was significantly better than the other (although there were some decidedly strong opinions that the quality at Red's was unquestionably superior and I was mad to consider otherwise). What we could unanimously agree on, however, was that the haddock was poorly battered and bland, and the clam fritters were far too much fritter and far too little clam. The service was bright, friendly and cheery, but unfortunately we were disappointed by the other options, esp. compared to the lobster roll. So in short, if you are in a rush and just want a lobster roll fix, Sprague's is fine. However, if you are just in town for a spell and want to be blown away by the biggest lobster roll you've ever seen (and have a better palate for lobster rolls then I probably have), stay in line and wait for Red's. But as for the other items at Sprague's? They had much more than the haddock or clam fritters, but if you are thinking about ordering those two in particular, I would pass and just get another lobster roll. read more

Right on the water, it doesn't get much better than this for Maine seafood. I'm a Mainer, so I know. The prices are fair and based on current market prices. There is a wide range of shellfish and some fish. We had the crab cake basket with fries and a crab roll. There was a generous portion of meat in both dishes and very little filler in the crab cake. It was SO FRESH! The restaurant's concept is all outdoors with picnic tables on a huge deck facing the water. On the edge, is a shack that you wait in line and order from. No one waits on you, just order and wait for your number to come up then take your food to the tables. This place will not disappoint and it totally beats the lines at Red's across the street. This is my go-to lobster roll spot on my way to and from our home in Maine. Delicious frappes as well! The orders come out bafflingly slow. People seem to like their lobster rolls; I didn't have one so I can't comment. We thought we'd try something else on the menu, and boy was that a mistake. The "fish and chips" were fish sticks, almost certainly chipped from a frozen brick. The crab cake at least had some flavor, though it was likely pre-frozen as well. It's slow and it's bad. Decent lobster roll. I've read a lot of reviews of Red's (across the street and world famous for their lobster roll) that say that if the line at Red's is too long, just go to Sprague's for the same thing with less of a wait. Those reviewers probably never ate at Red's. It's about twice to three times better than Sprague's. BUT...Sprague's is very good. It's probably the second or third best lobster roll I've had in Maine. It's smaller than Red's by about 1/3 and approximately the same price so the value isn't there compared to Red's. The quality seems to be as good, though and compared to almost everywhere else, it's a good value. In this area I think Sprague's is the place to go if you can't wait in line at Red's for a decent lobster roll, or if you have kids (or others) who don't eat lobster and want other things without waiting in line. There are a couple cute shops to buy jams etc. while you wait for them to prepare your food and plenty of tables on the water. You can bring your own beer or wine or whatever. Service is good, though not as friendly as most places I've been in Maine. I'm ok with that when ordering from a window, though. Sprague's is a great stop and it's unfair to compare it all the time to Red's across the street. If they were anywhere else people would be raving about them, and if you want anything other than a lobster roll, there's just no point of going to Red's so go to Sprague's and have a great time! BTW no Credit cards here. That's a total drag, particularly at the prices they charge. They should change that. Everyone else around them accepts them. Loved the place. We went to Red's on Thursday evening and to Spragues on Saturday afternoon. Lobster rolls are very comparable to Reds and here you can sit on the dock (not in line) and have a great view while your eating. Also Reds served theirs ICE cold which was a turn off. My husband and I also ordered the seafood chowder, good on an autumn day but a few too many clams for my liking. The owner and his family are really friendly and nice. read more

We came upon Sprague's via FB and so glad we did! Clam chowder was excellent with a bit of cheddar. The star was the lobster rolls. Big, meaty claw and tail meat. So fresh we could tell the lobster was steamed the day we ate it. I wasn't aware of the competitor across the street but I'm shocked anyone would go there when spragues has such a beautiful spot on the water. Came here at the end of the season. Red's was closed, but Sprague's was still open for the last weekend of the season. So glad that they were open. We had the fried haddock, clams and scallops. All were delicious and were not greasy. Hubby had the crab sandwich and we shared a steamed lobster. All of the food was fresh and delicious! Beware- the Google map has this placed exactly in the wrong place so as we were approaching Red's and saw the line (even in September!) we decided to diver to Spragues and pulled out Google Maps which delayed us 20+ minutes as it took us to the owner's house or something. Anywho, we finally ended up at the real lobster shack and ordered two lobster rolls, corn, lemonade and fried mushrooms. The line was short and there were plenty of picnic tables on the dock where we could sit under an umbrella and scoff at the poor sods standing in the sun at Red's for an hour + We loved the fried mushrooms - a neat novelty! But the corn- oh my heart (or should I say stomach??) !! It was sweet and perfectly cooked in its husk. I drizzled a little of the drawn butter on it that came w/ the lobster roll and Voila- perfection and a perfect accompaniment to lobster. I later had other corn + lobster and it wasn't nearly as great at Sprague's. The lobster roll was advertised as being mixed with mayo (which I hate) so I was leery, but willing to try anyway. To my delight, you could barely see it at all and you certainly couldn't taste it. I actually thought the toasted, buttered bun took away from the succulent lobster so I ate the lobster dipped in butter first and then treated the bun as an accompanying roll. My lobster was sweet and tender, so my only complaint was that I really wanted 2! :) The lemonade was a bust- it definitely wasn't fresh squeezed and we should have just gotten a coke or a water. It has to be tough being across from Red's, but Sprague's does a pretty good job of it with no lines and a better view of the Sheepscot from their boardwalk. A perfect crab roll was a mere $9.95 in late Summer of '08. The lobster roll was $15.95. The roll was toasted to perfection and filled to the brim with fresh, sweet crab meat. This was a textbook roll worthy of an "A." It tasted even better while looking at all the dopes queued up at Red's. My other addiction other than crab/lobster rolls is Diet Coke. Maine is predominantly a Pepsi and Moxie state, so I was thrilled to find they serve both Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi in ice cold 12 oz. cans. read more

My wife and I had lobster rolls, and spit an order of fries and a cup of clam chowder. The lobster roll was definitely 4 stars, being very traditional with a butter toasted split top bun and over flowing lobster that was completely unadorned but cooked to perfection. We decided to skip the butter/mayo and enjoyed sweet, succulent lobster at its finest. I took off a star for the chowder. It was basically a cup of buttered milk with a few potatoes and a probably a tablespoon of chopped clams. Once the potatoes and clams were gone there was still 3/4 cup of broth. The fries were soggy and a tad undercooked but I didn't deduct because fries always seem to be hit or miss at these types of shacks and let's face it, we didn't come for the fries. The net is I would recommend Sprague's for the lobster roll if you don't have the patience to wait on line at Red's, but would skip the chowder and fries. They did have a twin lobster special for around $23 dollars that the couple next to us really enjoyed so there is that too. read more
