I've been coming to Wiscasset since 2003, and have driven past Sprague's a ton of times, though tonight was my first visit. Never been a fan of Red's, so I was eager to give Sprague's a try. The signage indicated that a whole lobster was used in a roll, so I didn't order any sides (chowder or fries). I later wished I had grabbed a side of fries, but the roll was still quite filling! The lobster tasted great, the blueberry pop was an excellent combination and sitting on the deck by the Sheepscot was a nice way to enjoy my dinner! I'd definitely go back to Sprague's. read more

Great! Best roll I have had. Its easily a full lobster cooked amazingly with nothing but high quality meat:) I was told to go to Reds but did not want to stand in line. I walked across the the street saved ten bucks on chowder and roll and I walked back to my car and the people ahead of me were only 3/4 through the line. This place is a savior to the one tourist trap across the street. You may or may not know that Reds is a very common restaurant which is located right across the street, and while they seem to be very popular, it's a lot smarter to go to Sprague's Lobster which is LITERALLY right across the street (I said that twice on purpose, and yes I do know it's bad grammar deal with it ). And as soon as you take a bite of that fresh lobster, with the fresh sea salt, cold and warm butter- you know that this place will be just as good as the tourist trap across the street which has its disadvantages. When I actually take a minute to look at the prices and everything that was offered at Sprague's Lobster...this place overruns Red on every single level. This place has cheaper prices, great quality lobster, insanely fast line, less than a 4 minute wait for 3 lobster rolls, great customer service. When I look at reds I am able to realize that it's more expensive, good lobster quality, insanely long line, and a slow service. I swear this place is just as good as reds, if not better for all the reasons I have previously listed. I didn't want to take 2 hours of my day out on waiting for a single lobster, especially with the 45 people in front of us (exact number) and 6 minute per person (exact number, 6 min per person not group). Some people say it's worth the wait, but I like to have an extra hour of my life doing something like writing this review rather than spending till midnight at reds. read more

Don't bother waiting at Red's! Sprague's is a much more enjoyable experience all around. After waiting over 35 mins in line at Red's and barely moving forward, we were hungry and tired of the constant sound of traffic (as Red's is right on the side of the road). We decided to ditch the line and go across the street to Sprague's and were instantly greeted with a quieter atmosphere, zydeco music, a very short line, and endless seating. And the lobster roll was certainly satisfying. Also, you may have not known that you needed to ever try fried green beans, but you will be glad you did. read more

The place to go for lobster rolls, chowder and atmosphere. The good people at Sprague's were very welcoming and friendly to us, and even offered treats for our two pups. The food is simply delicious and sets the standard. We had a nice tour of the pier and a friendly chat with a local, and picked up our meal after a reasonable wait. Seriously the best fried fish sandwich I've ever had. This little shack is located at the end of the bridge just across the street from Red's. The line was too long at Red's so we came here. This place has its own picnic table area with a beautiful view of the water. They sell whole lobsters (cooked and raw) as well as a slew of other delicious items. I saw the fried Haddock sandwich and knew I wanted it. Haddock is not as common in the Philly area and I wanted to see if it matched up to the typical white fishes we see in PA. I was so shocked by how perfect this place battered and fried the fish. It was perfectly cooked and not greasy at all. The batter was thin, and not too flakey. It had just the right texture to not completely steal the show from the fish. The Haddock was a nice thick cut of the filet. I was so impressed with the meatiness and flavor of the Haddock. The bun was a typical bun, which was fine because it went well with the fish. And the tartar sauce was so darn good. It wasn't overpowering or too tart. It was creamy and really complimented the Haddock. The slice of white cheese was also a nice touch to create a memorable flavor. The flavor and freshness of the Haddock was really the trick here. Order from the main hut. Menu's taped to the front of the hut. Non-boiled items are picked up at same place while steamers and lobster meals are picked up from the second shack where they house the steam pots. About $16/lobster roll as of late 2015. Lobster rolls have way more meat than you can fit in a bite. So at least you're getting what you paid for. Buns are heavily buttered, nicely toasted. Lobster meat is lightly dressed in mayo so you get plenty of that fishy lobster taste. I liked the steamers here best, very clean. This place is wonderful! If you can only pick one place for fresh lobster, you will not regret choosing this restaurant. All of the food was wonderful. We had the boiled lobster, clam chowder and clam strips. All of it was delicious. HOWEVER, there is a long line. The lobster rolls were delicious, a very good-sized serving of fresh, sweet, tender lobster meat on a toasted bun. Plain, simple, awesome. The lobsterbake chowder was nothing special, I wouldn't bother with it again. The fries were very good, and it was certainly nice to have a table at which to eat it all. When in Maine, you eat lobster and Sprague's did not disappoint. It sits right on a pier that over looks the Sheepscot River. The atmosphere is casual and very family friendly. The Lobster Dinner was more than adequate and included a lobster, 1lb of clams, corn, cold slaw, and dinner roll. While you wait for them to steam your dinner as ordered there were a few cute shops and the Chamber of Commerce to poke around in. The service was friendly and the man who steamed my dinner made sure I understood how to crack it. The rest of my party enjoyed their meals as well which included a lobster roll and fried haddock sandwich with fresh cut fries. They even serve a selection of Gifford's Ice Cream. Lots of meat, just a little bit of mayo on a nicely grilled bun - simple and delicious. Saw pictures of the food, and knew I needed to go. When I arrived, was kinda disappointed to see how touristy it was - felt like I was about to get bamboozled. But when the food came I was glad I decided to stay. Lobster roll, while expensive, was loaded with really big chunks of lobster - it was both the biggest roll, and the biggest lobster chunks, of any roll I had on my trip. Crab roll, was also loaded up with delicious crab, though that was shredded, and not in chunks. Clam chowder was easily the best I had on the trip - not like the watery/bland chowders that one typically finds in this part of Maine. Saw the line at Red's and opted for this place instead after checking out the reviews. I got a lobster roll and shared fried mushrooms and steamed clams with friends. Everything was delicious. Out of the three lobster rolls I tried in Maine that weekend (Libby's in Brunswick, The Thirsty Whale in Bar Harbor, and here) Sprague's had the freshest lobster. If you're tight on time or don't want to wait over 1.5 hours on a Sunday afternoon for Red's, Sprague's is a good alternative. On our way back to NY, I wanted to stop here. Based on the Yelp reviews and on a local's suggestion of where he goes to eat. They are diagonally located across from Red's(check out my review). This is another "shack" style food place located on a "boardwalk". Of course gotta have the picnic tables and another great view of the lake...maybe ocean...not sure. $$CASH ONLY$$. Anywho, this is a family run establishment. They have Lobster rolls, burgers, clams, chowder, chili fries, whole steamed lobster, fish and chips you pretty much get the idea. You have choices when coming here. They have the main area where you order your food and where you order your whole steamed lobster. If you opt for the whole steamed lobster, they ring a little bell and have a clothes line with a pin they get your ticket to the kitchen this way. I guess its to have the kitchen make your sides. Which is soo cool!! Creative i must say, glad i wasn't the only one that thought so on this day lol. You place your order, they hand you a # and then you can wait around or be nosy like me and check out their lobsters and décor on the "Lobster Shack". I took plenty of pictures. While being nosy...a gentleman named "Dave" took out a 3lb Lobster so i can snap some pictures. This was cool, lobster was HUGE!!! And a fighter, which i read is always a good thing. Started chitchatting with him about Boothbay and lobsters and the how people are so nice and food is good in these neck of the woods. Lobster pilled up high and they offered butter on the side if you want although you really don't need it since the buns are buttered. The C.C was sooo tasty and full i mean full of clams. The BF killed it...and mind you it's not his thing. Sprague's offered good parking, plenty of seating under red umbrellas with a real pretty view along the water (Red's did not). The lobster roll was huge for $25. It could have easily been by a meal at half the size (and half the price). Very tasty. The only thing I was surprised at was it was cold. Warm roll, warm butter, cold lobster. I like it warm better. This place only exists because it takes the overflow of customers who came to wiscassett to eat at red eats and were discouraged by the hour-long wait in line. We unfortunately had two very hungry young boys in tow and had to eat here. What a disappointment, to drive an hour thinking you are going to get the best lobster roll of your life (because that is what you get at red eats) to have to eat a half-assed (but just as pricey!) imitation, with shell pieces in it to boot!!! We stopped here with the intention of going to Red's across the street, but the line was insane there. We had a lobster roll, clam chowder and crab cakes. OMG I cannot explain how good and fresh everything was. Not only that, but the family who runs the place were all so pleasant and nice. It was one of our best experiences on our Maine trip so far.
