It AIN'T EASY trying to find XIAO LONG BAO (XLB), a.k.a. "Juicy Pork Dumplings" here in the 805! Spring Garden was already our go to spot for Chinese takeout in our area. Located next to Trader Joe's in Ventura, recently, they've added their version of XLB to the menu called, "Shanghai Juicy Bun." Now they've enticed us to venture in to sample the goods :) Ms. Cindi is the face of the business, the amicable lady seems to be there all the time. Clean & spacious inside. With the inner configuration, its sometimes hard to get a visual of new entrants if no one's manning the reception area. So once we've been spotted... Let's get our chow on! *SHANGHAI JUICY BUN ($8.95): Created in house, it takes ~20 minutes to prepare so place that order RIGHT AWAY if yur cravin' summa dis! They're pretty tasty, too, FOR THE 805! Initially they brought them out on a plate which resulted in them cooling down too fast. Now they come in the steamers (metal, not bamboo) they were cooked in, so they maintain the heat better. Noticeably juicy, but definitely not soupy like Joe's Shanghai in the NYC. Worthy alternative to making the trek into LA or Monterey Park from here. *CALAMARI RINGS with SALT & PEPPER ($8.95): Despite the initial letdown of no tentacles in the mix here, we still ordered this new addition to the menu. This dish turned out to be actually quite tasty! Batter is crisp and the calamari is not chewy at all. The salt, pepper, and jalapeños create a nice bit of heat. *SZECHUAN BEAN CURD ($8.95): A.K.A. Ma Po Tofu, well, you have to ADD ground pork or beef to truly make it Ma Po Tofu. This is a recent discovery of the Chinese cuisine for our fams and we've been ordering it more often cuz it's pretty darn flavorful. I think tofu here is medium firmness with a little kick in the sauce. Seems to vary how much that kick is. We've learned to specify "bring da heat!" Decently prepared here with a good quantity. *BBQ PORK LO MEIN ($9.95): One of my faves of the Chinese eats, too bad it's such a calorie load, so I avoid it most of the time now. But since this was gonna be a review visit I had to put it in the order list, yay! They prepare it well here, too. NOT soupy at all, perfectly greasy, and BBQ pork tastes fresh with a nice red hue. Ample quantity to feed this hungry family. Yup... satisfying :) *POTSTICKERS ($7.95): After eating their XLB, this seems much more doughy now. There is a good quantity of meat though AND you do have a chicken option here. Use to be ordered by my light-eater all the time but not anymore. *FISH FILET IN BLACK BEAN SAUCE ($13.95): My dad's all time fave dish, but this wasn't prepared like he wanted & you could see it in his face. They use Sole as the fish and pieces are battered then sautéed in a black bean sauce. Decent dish actually, just a bit on the salty side. My pop's preference is off the menu, so IF YOU ASK, they will prepare it as a whole filet unbreaded, steamed, and bathed in a black bean sauce. Maybe next time. *SZECHUAN EGGPLANT (lunch special $6.95): NO WAY you'll catch me eating eggplant, BUT Wifey digs it and thought this was prepared well. Eggplant was plump, not soggy wrinkly at all. Big portion size for the lunch option. Comes with choice of soup & veggie egg roll. *CRISPY WALNUT SHRIMP ($17.95): A fave of my lil man, this was just alright FOR ME today. More creamy than crispy, it didn't have the shiny glaze I prefer. Shrimp wasn't as plump either. Oh well, Lil Man still killed it, though. Overall it ranges between 3 or 4 stars. If you judge it by comparing it to other local options, it's 4 stars. Service is friendly and attentive. Food comes out without a long wait. It's one of my Fams fave choices 'round here. Versus the choice Chinese spots in LA or Monterey Park, it's more of a 3 star outing. So I'm Asian which makes me a bit more critical of Chinese, Vietnamese food around the area. Considering we're in Ventura County, the food here is pretty tasty. Like most Chinese restaurants, I think the food is a bit on the greasy side. I ordered the following: 1. Honey Walnut Shrimp I definitely had better walnut shrimp at other places. It was good but it wasn't great. Plus slightly overpriced (~$17!!) 2. Kim Chi spicy noodles The highlight of this dish is the noodles themselves. I think it must have been home made because it has the perfect amount of chewy and deliciousness... 3. Eggplant stirfry Tasty but a bit salty and greasy. Great for drenching your rice though! Overall, portions are good. I visited Spring Garden with my family (wife and two little kids) on a weekend afternoon. I can echo some of the other reviews that the service made us feel a bit rushed and some interactions with the waitstaff felt awkward, they were friendly and the food was pretty good. This is one of the most vegetarian friendly Chinese restaurants in town, and it works well for both delivery and dining in. The food isn't amazing, but it's good. We were looking for a place we haven"t tried before, & decided to go to Spring Garden. This place was basically empty so we weren' t sure what to think at first. People did start showing up after us, which put us more at ease. I haven't been to such a spotlessly clean, well done restaurant in a while. Pleasantly surprised by the service, & food quality as well. All of us were very happy, & had no complaints. Prices are on the higher end of normal, but worth it. You do get you pay for! Spring Garden is my favorite chinese restaurant in town and I've been to nearly all of them. Their sweet and sour shrimp is great, the sweet and spicy soup and egg drop soups are good and not too salty. The dishes we tried, the sweet and sour shrimp and General Tsao's chickent are nearly on par with some of what is to be found in Chinatown in Los Angeles in terms of style and flavor. We also had a shrimp fried rice once night and it was pretty good. We did have a chicken substitute and the tofu meat substitute was too chewy. They said they had gotten a different brand and apologized. They should have the good soy meat substitute now. We eat here often as it's our favorite Chinese restaurant in town now, next to Kung Fu'od, which we get for take out. We haven't tried any of the fish dishes yet but we might be adventuresome and try one out. read more

My wife and I came in on Christmas evening. We didn't have to wait too long, but when the waitress sat us down, she just pointed to the table for us to down, which I thought was quite rude. It took a while for the waiter to get to us. He didn't even introduce himself or ask us how we were doing. He just asked us what do you want to order so I put in my order, and my wife put in hers, about 10 minutes into our visit. We asked for a refill of water and a straw which we never got. My wife got her order but I never got mine which I thought was very strange. I just let it go because at that point I just wanted to leave, the waiter just seemed like he didn't want to be there and didn't even make eye contact with us. My wife's food was mediocre at best. I know it was a holiday and a little bit busier than I guess they usually are but if you don't want to be there, then just don't open, I don't think I'll ever come back here if I want Chinese food I think I'll stick to panda express read more

I KNOW it's Christmas Day and we should be grateful they were open HOWEVER they were beyond disorganized and the wait time was ridiculous. Don't tell customers 45 minutes for a to go order and 2 hours later it's still not ready. They are open every Christmas and really should have this figured out by now! They should BE HONEST tell people you are behind and the actual wait times are two or more hours for online and to go orders. Give people the option to not order knowing the truth! If that wasn't bad enough there was no rhyme or reason to how they were calling up the orders. You couldn't pay ahead online and the ONE person working front was somewhat clueless. Several people left frustrated which I am sure caused wasted food! I finally left after two hours with no food in hand and demanding a refund! That includes Beef Chopsuey, House Special Lo Mein, egg roll, egg drop soup, fried rice and foiled wrapped chicken (sorry, don't really know what's the last dish is called). First, the Beef Chopsuey should be called "beef with bean sprouts". That's all it has, no flavor very bland "beef with bean sprouts. I ordered beef Chopsuey which is beef with different veggies, not just bean sprouts. House Special Lo Mein is just disappointing, no flavor and over cooked. Fried rice is basically just rice with tons of soy sauce. I'm Giving one star to the egg drop soup. Egg roll and Foiled wrapped chicken have a little bit of flavor when we dipped it in the sauce. The prices are high but-- especially after Covid -- I understand that.. But, at least for me, there's a pricing line that shouldn't be crossed. I still believe that most Chinese restaurants offer tea without charge. But last night a friend I was with was offered hot tea for 2 when asked by the waitress. When the bill came, I was shocked that we were charged $2 per person for ONE pot of tea. That really irritated me I asked the waitress about it and was told that it was because "costs are high." They took the time to learn our names and ask how we are doing every time they see us. They know my entire family! I have witnessed an irate customer spew horrible things at the owner (all because her credit card machine ate his receipt) and she was incredibly professional and polite. This restaurant has very good chinese food! It is probably one of the best in town that i've tried. I ordered the string bean w pork, pork XLB, mu shu pork, and the 3 delight chef special. The Pork XLB has really good flavor but the dough on the outside was kind of gooey and thick. no real broth or "soup" came out when cut opened. However the rest of the dishes were good. Our server wasn't too friendly on the other hand. She rudely snatched the menu from under my friends arm when we were ordering because i asked her for item "A-13" on the menu and she didn't know the menu for the place she apparently worked at.. don't number your items if you can't refer to them * She then brought only two sides of rice when we asked for 3, one for each person. she was awesome at filling our waters but dropped water all over our table and food.. idk, maybe she had a bad day.. but overall her attitude needs to change. We checked Yelp for the review, as I was having a lazy lady night, and not wanting to cook. Seeing five stars here, my guy and I decided to give it a go. Our food arrived on time and hot, even with our delivery guy having some trouble getting into our gated complex. The food was plentiful, tasty, and being saved for a reheat. We were given the option of spiciness on some of our food, which was great, and I asked for my veggie lo-mein to be made without mushrooms; later being delighted to find none whatsoever in my food. The driver even called to verify the directions, before he got lost... he actually thought to call and get help before wasting 20 minutes trying to find an address. Well done. When he delivered the food he was friendly, and happy. Unfortunately they forgot to deliver the soup that came with my order. I called the restaurant and they apologized and had the soup at my door within 10 minutes. We ordered (2) House Special Dinners, "B" level... One with Mongolian Beef and one with Shrimp with Vegetables. The food arrived steaming smoking hot. Super fresh. The Mongolian beef was outstanding. The meat was super tender and deliciously flavored with green onions. I used lots of Chinese hot mustard on it. Delicious and the portion size was very generous compared to some places nowadays. The Shrimp with Vegetables was salty and sweet with snow peas, broccoli, Bok Choy, water chestnuts and carrots. The shrimp were medium size, sweet, firm and delicious. The vegetables seemed very fresh rather than frozen and precut. Very much enjoyed this dish. Great when drizzld with sweet and sour sauce and then chili garlic sauce. The Wor Wonton Soup was outstanding. The Vegetables were fresh and tasty. The chicken, shrimp and pork were very well done, clean tasting and mixed well within the tasty broth. The won tons are simply incredible. I could taste the ginger in the meat mixture of the wontons, which were very flavorful. I highly recommend this place.
