It's been 50-plus years since I've been here when I used to get the duck with the orange glaze and it's still on the menu. Please keep it there! I got it back then when I was about six or seven and that got me thinking that kids are being hoodwinked by the children's menu that you see in restaurants. "Just get the hot dog or chicken strips, little Johnny. You won't like the duck with the orange glaze". YES, YOU WILL, JOHNNY! Don't listen to them! Go for the good stuff! It's all a ruse to save money! But with the reasonable prices you find at Spring House Tavern, that might not be an issue. As for my flashback to a childhood memory, that duck is still awesome. It's good and tender, the skin is crisp and tasty, and the glaze is deliciously tangy. I used the butter I got with the rolls to put on the mashed potatoes and also got the raspberry brie pastry with the strawberries. I all added up to yummy, filling comfort food. We ate here last night. It's been a long time since we've had a good meal from start to finish anywhere. Well we did here. The service was even great and quick. We got French onion soup. It was delicious. The crab cakes were full of pure crab meat. Huge and heavy. The prime rib was so tender you could cut it with a butter knife. The man next to us had crab imperial. Came in for a quick "after swim meet" dinner at 5:00 on a Saturday (there were 5 of us) without a reservation. Host at the front asked if we had a reservation. When we said no, he took a look at the computer and said he could make it work. We appreciated the effort and accommodation of being treated like a reservation wielding customer. My coworker recommended we come here. It's good, not great. You have to always be suspicious when the parking lot is empty at a brunch spot on a mild Sunday morning. An hour later, though, traffic did pick up. Nonetheless, the staff was extremely pleasant and attentive so that is a plus. The food could be better. The omelets are the only thing being made. I Went here with a very sweet guy for dinner. We started with stuffed mushrooms with crab and scallops with bacon. Very good!! Next we both ordered the crab cakes. They were good and they came with a nice salad and potato and a vegetable. The ambiance was very pleasant. Nice mix of people. They had a good selection of craft beer and wine. Another fabulous time at the Spring House Tavern with our family. Fourth time for Thanksgiving dinner besides other casual times. Most of us had the traditional turkey dinner which was soooo good and I even had a little leftovers for the next day. My mother took me here for dinner a few weeks ago after raving about the food. She was right about the food; it's terrific. But, the atmosphere needs a little bit of a tune up, which I am hoping comes from its new bistro establishment. Sure, I'm a sucker for an old-fashioned dining room. Spring House Tavern, though, is TOO old-fashioned. The menu literally reads like an old-style tavern, with offerings like Prime Rib and two sides. Even the fish off this side of the menu seemed overbearing and heavy. Thankfully, they have lighter fare options, if you're not down with the full meat-n-potatoes menu. I ordered the hummus platter to start, and then the strip steak salad for my main course. The hummus platter was amazing: huge, flavorful, with plenty of pita, hummus, black olives, feta, onions, and roasted red peppers. Who cares if they were all pre-packaged, at least they tasted amazing! This clearly was meant to serve more than one person, and I inhaled it anyway. My salad was equally as gigantic, and came well-tossed in a light dressing, with feta cheese and the usual suspects of veggies. They gave generous portions of steak and cooked them to perfection. Mmm. My mother ordered the prime rib (predictable!) with a baked tater. What came out could have been something out of the Flintstones, and she took at least half home for dinner the next night. Yes, that was the small portion! While the food is top notch, the atmosphere is extremely dated. Yes, this is an older dining room, but the fake plants and wooden furniture is reminiscent of a 1960's establishment. The uniforms the wait staff wear also harkens back to a forgotten era...one that we're intentionally forgetting. This was echoed by the fact that multiple families and senior citizens were dining here. You certainly won't find anything modern about the Spring House Tavern. Hopefully, this will be rectified by the opening of their Bistro component, soon. read more

We have been there many times. I would recommend the Bar Area(Bistro) or outside. I am not a fan of the main dining room. Great old-school cocktails and wines by the glass that are a good value. I would stick with the Jim's Salad, Prime Rib, Pesto Pasta chicken and the fish specials. At the bar, a good mix of different people. The service is excellent. They usually have good music outside on Friday nights in the summer and in the bar on Wednesdays. read more

It's sad when the veggies were the best part of a seafood dinner. This was my first visit to this restaurant, and I was the guest of friends who were celebrating their 50th anniversary. I ordered the crab imperial stuffed trout, which was an abomination! The trout tasted to be about a day past fresh, and the crab was no more than canned crab swimming in mayonnaise, dumped on top of the trout. It was cold in spots. The inside of the restaurant was COLD, and we kept getting wafts of cigarette smoke. I think we were near an outside door where employees would go out to smoke. Looking around, everyone, including us, had their coats on while eating. We complained to the waitress, but she didn't think that anything could be done. This may have been the place to go in its heyday, but that time has passed. It needs updating, and a chef who knows how to prepare seafood. Service was marginal. We had to ask for more coffee, water, soda, etc. These things should be taken care of without asking. One person at the table got the grilled vegetable salad and liked it. The burger was also said to be good. I just hope they turn things around before they lose more business. Nice, historic building. read more

Met a dear friend for Sunday brunch. We had so much to talk about and chose Spring House Tavern for a wonderful brunch menu and for their fantastic Bloody Mary. We let our server (Annemarie) know that we were in no rush, and she welcomed us to take our time and enjoy our visit. In the blink of an eye, two hours had passed. We had ordered our Bloody Marys and some coffee but just as we ordered our food, the Manager came over and let us know that we had been there for two hours and we needed to order because he has people waiting for a table. I found this extremely rude. I worked in restaurant business for over a decade and would NEVER approach a guest and tell them to order or they'd have to get going. There were several other empty tables in the dining room where we sat, no one was waiting for our table. Annemarie was friendly, funny and warm. She knew the menu and was able to make great suggestions. She never rushed us or made us feel like a bother in any way. Fantastic service. I give a 5 star review for the food and for Annemarie, but the manager needs a class in hospitality and manners toward a guest. read more

Had a 7:30 reservation for the deck, arrived at 7:30 and was immediately seated. The deck is beautiful. Server was to our table in just a couple minutes and had drinks quickly. Apps ordered and came out in 10 minutes. Meal was on table as soon we were done with apps which was perfect and quick. Crab cakes are phenomenal, prime rib done perfectly to my asking and very good. But waiting at the high top for 20 minutes to be welcomed. Only to be asked wait for you want. No idea of her name until we got the check. That is not a result of understaffing. Food took forever which again is not waitresses fault. So I called manager, and she was more interested in the conversation taking place at desk then hear what I said. Food - eh. We wound up at the Spring House Tavern because there was a 90-minute wait for a table at our original destination (Arpeggio's across the street) and we were too hungry to wait that long. It now comes as no surprise why there was no wait to be seated at the Spring House. In what was a thoroughly repugnant eating experience, the medicinal diet Mystery Cola was neither Coke nor Pepsi, the bitter coffee was served lukewarm so we took the initiative and insisted on a freshly brewed pot, and the only positive comment I can make about our food is that thank goodness the portions were small. read more

Perfect place for celebrating Valentine's Day lunch. Old Inn setting is comfortable with understated decor. Service was pleasant and efficient. Especially appreciated was the fact that we were not rushed although they were preparing for a "full house" dinner crowd. Snapper soup was flavorful with just the right balance of "snapper" to broth. The broth was just the right consistency. Reminiscent of the old Philadelphia offerings at Bookbinders restaurant and MacAllister's Banquet Hall. Crab cakes lived up to their reputation. Seafood salad was an interesting combination of seafood (lump crab, shrimp, smoked salmon) and fruit (apples, grapes, orange wedges). The tuna salad added nothing to dish whereas a few greens would have added texture. Pies were good but a bit pricey at eight dollars. If you go, ask for Veronica. read more

Dinner on their patio this past weekend. First impression....both "hostesses" on patio didnt pay us any mind until we asked for a table. Our server seemed on the green side, the effort was there on his part so no complaints. Food was very good, especially the avocado/crab appetizer. Scallops and crabcakes were very good as well. Mixed drink was weak and had to be sent back. Their crowd seemed to skew towards an older demographic, we were the youngest people on the patio by 20 years. The decor in the dining room is stuffy and dated, while the parking lot could double for a Buick dealership. I'd advise to keep it to the bar room or the the patio unless your grandparents are picking up the check. read more

My friends and family love the Spring House Tavern! This is a great place to go for any occasion and the menu is really diverse. If crab cakes are your thing, there is literally nowhere else in the area you need to go. They are delicious here! We also love going on Fridays and Saturdays to take advantage of their prime rib nights. Great cut of beef and and a really good value. Don't forget to order a cheesy crock of french onion soup. You won't be sorry. And what dinner would be complete without a solid drink? The bar here has a great variety of wine, beers on tap, and a friendly staff that makes fantastic cocktails. Usually get here once or twice a year while visiting relatives in the area. I have always had very good food here, as several other Yelper's have mentioned the crab cakes are very good. I have also found that the daily fish special is a good choice. Based on the quality of the food I would give this place four stars. The reason I went with three stars is that the service is always very weak. On my last visit earlier this week we had long periods were we did not see our waitress while our drink glasses sat empty. The service in this place is awful. A few days back, me and a few colleagues of mine from work encountered one of the most unpleasant waitresses when we went for a drink. She wanted to check the ID of one of my colleagues (who is 40 years old), which she has every right to do, but she suspected that the id was not real and kept on harassing him by asking him about his date, month and year of birth, with the id in her possession. Not to mention, that she was particularly impolite during this time. I don't have complaints about the food, but I am not stepping into this place again after this incident. read more

We got a last minute reservation on a Saturday night due to Bacco telling us that we no longer have heaters available for us when we eat outside due to big party using the tent even though they said they would when we made a reservation a week prior. Springhouse Tavern accommodated us perfectly. We were outside next to a heater. The service and food were excellent. The hostess found out it was a birthday dinner and comped us dessert. We came here several times before. The prime rib was always good, and we usually sat at a table in the bar area with a very nice waitress. Today we went and sat AT the bar instead. We waited 10 mins before the bartender came over. I asked may I have a menu so I could order wine and food? She took a while to get us the menus, then we waited another 10 minutes for her to come over to take our drink orders, and that's because I flagged her down. She would go around the bar talking to all the regulars and served them drinks, but completely missed us until I flagged her down. Not wanting to wait any longer, we immediately ordered a prime rib and pasta with shrimps. A couple next to us, who were probably regulars since they were greeted by their first names, were drinking but didnt order until several minutes after us. One of them got the same pasta I did. They got their food a good 10-15 minutes BEFORE us. Our bartender was no where to be seen, and we finally got our food. The prime rib was luke warm but thankfully, pasta was still hot, though the shrimp was a bit cold. We were hungry so we ate them anyway. She probably just let them sit in the kitchen. She never came by for the remaining of our dinner. Another bartender finally came over after we were almost done and got me a water. I thought perhaps our bartender had left for the day since we didnt see her at all. But when we finally got our check from the other bartender, the original bartender showed up! I really wanted to give her only 10% tip, but since we were using a gift card to pay, and we discussed we would never come back, my husband (against my will) gave her the remaining amount, which was over 30%! I will never go back there. If you are not a regular, forget about getting service. I joked to my husband that although we are almost 50, we are still the youngest at the bar. Visited here recently and found that this place as much as it wants to be higher class isn't. Over the past few years it has slowly gone down hill. The young water wait staff was nice, the lady at the front desk was ok,,The food was subpar and the waiter we had was awful, not personal, and at the end of our visit gave me serious attitude and refused to say goodnight! This waiter gave me real unmedicated bipolar vibes ( he has uncovered tattoos) no issues with the tats, but his attitude almost ruined my night. I have been coming to The Spring House Tavern for 10 years and this was the worst experience. I'm not sure if I want to come back, the over priced crab cakes and small portions are not worth it. William Penn Inn is close, maybe I will just go there where I know I will be treated well. Things and Places change! Once was great, not so much anymore. I recently held a bridal shower for my daughter here and was extremely disappointed in the service. Two servers were assigned to our party of 28, but after initially checking in with us they were nowhere to be found. I had to go searching for them to take drink orders (practically no one was served drinks throughout the whole event), take the entree orders, cut the cake ... I was searching for them the entire time! The entrees took an hour to be served. When I went to pay the bill (which included a 20% gratuity), I expressed my displeasure to the receptionist/manager, who explained that the restaurant was busier than expected and my servers were needed to serve other tables in addition to my party. I waited a few days before calling to speak with the banquet manager who I had made the arrangements with. When I called she explained that she had been standing at the counter when I was checking out and heard my complaints. I can't believe that she didn't step in at the time or reach out to me afterwards! Anyway, no offer of a discount on the gratuity, no offer of a gift card, nothing. I do not fault the servers (in fact I gave them an extra gratuity because they were so nice before the shower started). They should never have been assigned to so many other tables that they could not take care of our party. I would not recommend this restaurant. Management leaves a bit to be desired. read more
