I went back this weekend for my second visit for 3 reasons: 1- I realllllly needed a massage. 2- my experience with Martha was great the first time. 3- I had a 20% discount! I recommend you go to this spa ONLY if you go to Martha. You have to be vocal about what your needs are and what you're looking for. And be friendly! Just because you are paying someone for a service doesn't mean you treat him/her like a servant. I only gave them one star because this is the bear minimum i can give. STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. Especially, the slight overweight short massage therapist with glasses. She looks like she's in her late 20s to early 30s. I bought a groupon there for me and my 2 sisters as a birthday present. First, i got there late because the entrance was closed. after figuring how i'm going to get inside, i finally called them on my cell and was told to use the entrance around the corner. How was anyone suppose to know this before coming in? So when i got there, the first thing the receptionist told me was that my voucher did not include tax and gratuity. She made sure she quoted me the original price so i can tip on the original price and not the discounted one. All this made her sound like she was pressed for tip and the massage hasn't even started yet. After the conversation, the receptionist took me to the lounge where my sisters were waiting. We we sitting there and chatting for a good 15 mins before our massage therapist took us into our rooms. After we got undressed, my massage therapist comes in and tells us that our massage was going to be only an hr since I got there 7 mins late. The voucher that i purchased was good for 75mins. Stun to my disbelief that she even said that after making us wait an additional 15mins after i arrived, i managed to let it go and went on with the massage. The massage was awful; it felt like feather strokes on my back. I had to mention to her the apply a little bit more pressure 3 times before she finally acknowledge what i was saying, and even after that she rebutted that this is a Swedish massage and this is how it's suppose to be. I've gotten countless Swedish massages in the past so I know this is not how it is. Overall, this is the worse place i've ever been to. They were extremely rude and unpleasant. I had a Groupon for a 75 minute massage/reflexology treatment. When I booked the appointment (I had no problem getting the time that I needed and they were very pleasant on the phone) they asked me to arrive 10 minutes early so I could sign in and get ready before the massage. I was running late and didn't get there until my appointment time but they made no fuss about it at all. I was led to a clean and comfortable waiting area. Its not super posh but its calm and quiet and clean and for the price, not bad at all. My masseuse came out to get me and took me into the room, looked over the form I filled out and talked about how he could adjust the massage to focus more on the areas I had marked were bothering me. I think his name was Ilyia? The woman at the front desk wrote down his name for me but I can't find it now :( I know I'm usually in the minority with this but I hate deep tissue massage. I had put in the comments section of my form that I didn't want deep tissue (I hate when they try to dig out a knot and I spend half of my relaxing massage wincing in pain) and he made sure to adjust the pressure so I'd enjoy it. It was an absolutely FANTASTIC massage!! The entire thing from beginning to end was wonderful and I left feeling recharged. Another thing that is nice about this massage is after he is done with each "section" he uses a hot towel to remove the excess massage oil so you don't leave feeling greasy. I liked the massage so much that I walked out of the massage room and straight up to the front desk to book another one! I felt no pressure to tip like some previous posters reviews. I even had to call the masseuse back out into the front room once I had finished booking so I could give him the tip. The only weird thing about this place is when they take you into the massage room they talk to you for a minute about the treatment and then leave so you can get undressed and onto the table but there is nowhere to put your clothes. I've never been more disappointed with a massage in my ENTIRE LIFE. The one star is for the receptionist whom I felt very bad for because she was super nice. My masseuse was MARY, and if your a regular massage goer looking for a proper massage she is definitely not the one to see. 1) there is no changing area nor do they offer robes. 2) Mary had the window of my room open and I heard all the noise NYC has to offer.... Not what I wanted . 3) I spoke with Mary prior to my massage explained my trouble area and informed her of my pressure preference. (Which is very strong) 4) There was no technique I felt as if they pulled her off the street and gve her a job. 5) There was no pressure she is NOT an experienced professional. Rubbing someone using a whole bottle of oil is NOT a massage. 6) my 5 year old niece could have done a better job walking on my back. I came here because it was really close to my office when I worked in the FiDi and they're open late - so I was able to go after work. The reviews were mostly positive, but I still wasn't sure... So I am hoping that this review will put things intro perspective for first timers. When I go to a salon / spa / hole in a wall to get a massage, I have some pretty basic expectations that I look out for: 1) the bathroom cleanliness 2) the overall cleanliness 3) the technique (and the massage therapist) 4) the environment 5) front desk, attitude, friendliness, etc. Here is how Spring Thyme scored: 1) The bathroom is shared with the floor, it's awful - it smelled and was extremely dirty - 0 stars 2) The "spa" was not clean by any means: dust & hair were present everywhere; the sheets on the message table were stained with something (I am going to hope it's massage oil) - I had to ask them to change it before I got on it - 0 stars 3) The technique was OK - not great - my masseuse was extremely strong so that was good - 4 stars 4) The environment sucked, it was dark and it smelled like Thyme - which is a spice that belongs in the kitchen - 2 stars 5) The front desk lady was nice and had a good attitude - 4 stars The average of all of the above is 2 stars... read more

Although Spring Thyme does not come off as your typical Spa (they offer acupuncture and herbs and is more of a Eastern Healing Center), their massages are always strong and relaxing. The rooms are clean and they have a Quiet Zone which is a nice relief from the hustle and bustle of the Financial District. Most importantly, their masseuses are licensed and fluent in English - not what you get with the Chinese "Bodywork Shops." Prices are reasonable. Check out their specials - I go whenever I can. I also tried the Herbs and there's a few that have become a staple in my medicine cabinet. They have this really great spray/dust thing for canker sores that really works wonders and beats numbing gel. read more

I found my girl. Svetlana. LOVE HER. I think its safe to say every girl in Manhattan is always looking for her go-to when it comes to beauty services. I went and got a wax from her - she could not have been more meticulous with the whole process. She did a very good job, and was well educated. I LOVE beauty experts who are very knowledgeable in their fields and are willing to share what they know. Very friendly as well. I will be surely going back to her! The place itself isn't 'high - end' per say, but I'd rather pay for talent and a job well done than fancy decorations and expensive tile and paint. We got a couples massage here and my boyfriend and I both had female masseuses. After filling out the questionnaire, we were led to a spacey room with dim lights and the massage started. It was so relaxing, we both fell asleep and woke up an hour later feeling refreshed. I'm sensitive to pain and prefer only a little bit of pressure and this was the first time I didn't have any complaints. So for those of you who prefer strong pressure to get those knots out of your back might not be so satisfied. My review is specifically for waxing. Zori is amazing. She has extremely good technique and explains everything to you. She also keeps everything sterile. They use HARD WAX. I also have sensitive skin and my skin wasn't raw or anything after it was done. Greatly recommend coming here if you want to try for your first time! Also just in general. It was easy to get an appointment and everyone was nice and friendly. It just felt more like a gentle rub than a massage although she did apply pressure around the neck and shoulders. The foot reflexology was barely a rub. Maybe I was just too tired, at one point I was so relaxed that I wished she would just stop and let me sleep. Spring Thyme Day Spa is NOT a luxury spa with fancy amenities. However, it is a place worth going to for an effective massage at a reasonable price (they often run promos on their own website or Groupon). Unlike some of the other more "bare bones" massage places in Lower Manhattan, you 1) receive polite, friendly service, 2) get a private room, and 3) don't leave feel like you were just beaten up. You will however leave feeling relaxed and without any of the tension or knots you went in with. (Note: The main reason for losing one star is that my husband and I had to wait 20 minutes past our appointment time, which is a pet peeve of mine.) read more

I do agree, though, that I'm unsure if I would pay $120 full price- but I DID buy another deal through another site. If you go here- definitely book with Phillip- cannot speak on behalf of others that work there. The only thing that is keeping me from giving 5 stars is that they included tip in my ending balance (the tax portion that is not included in the groupon deal). We come to this place with bf as of $55 Groupon Deal: 75 min of massage consist of 50 min of "signature massage" & 25 min of foot reflexology. I bought one for myself and one for my bf as valentine's gift. We had no problem scheduling, although, as other review verified, they are booked to the T and it took several weeks between our attempt to book appointment and our appointment. No biggie. Pros: 1) The quality of massage was excellent. My female masseuse, Marina, a slender female with dark hair in her 20s I guess, was professional. She clearly follows my direction on preference and her technique had me high for hours after I left the spa. I was impressed by her gentle yet firm stroke and her use of elbows and heated towels on my neck, my shoulders, my back and my feet. Kudos to Marina for job well done. 2) Despite my bf being 15 late, the staff was courteous enough to accommodate us and we still get our full deal. They are able and willing to work with the clients, which I appreciate. Cons: 1) The door @ 27 Williams closes at 7pm. Without calling the spa I would have been stranded downstairs in the cold, missed my appointment without knowing that there is another entrance @ 40 Exchange place that remains open past 7pm. 2) The receptionist is friendly but her English is still hard to understand. Advise speaking slower may improve the general opinion of her English ability, which is perfectly fine. 3) I wish they'd take care of paying business PRIOR to the massage. I was perturb that, while still blissful and high in a extremely relaxed and happy state of mind post massages, I had to "CALCULATE" how much tip and the sales tax that are not covered by Groupon deal. Seriously. Advise to the spa to take care of the paying business prior to massages **except tips to masseuse** so the clients may extend the benefit and the pleasure they get from the massages. This place would have gotten more stars but for one thing: the obnoxious, aggressive woman at the front desk when I checked out. I got a signature massage and foot reflexology which were both good enough. My massage therapist was nice and she gave me a relaxing massage, if not as rigorous as I would normally prefer (she informed me before she started that the "signature massage" consisted of light to medium pressure only). I normally like firm pressure, but I decided to roll with it since I had a Groupon, though if I had paid full price I would have been more annoyed. She ended up using medium pressure so it wasn't so bad. My other complaint with the massage itself was the use of oil: she used it too liberally and left me feeling rather greasy when done (it didn't help that I didn't care for the smell). This was particularly annoying because she had massaged my head a bit - which admitted felt nice - but left my face and hair smelly and oily, yuck. But overall I was still decently satisfied with the massage itself: not great but it was relaxing, worked out some knots, and I had, afterall, not paid full price. Side note: the Groupon was for a Swedish massage and foot reflexology. I've never had foot reflexology so can't judge if that was good or not. It just felt like a foot massage to me and felt nice but can't say if it was real reflexology. The problem lay in this horrid woman at the front desk. When I went to pay, I left a $15 tip and the woman kept harping that the full price of the services was $124 and most people leave 20% so I should leave $24. I tried to be nice about it and say that $15 was what I was willing to give and that it is a "tip" afterall and therefore within my discretion to leave what I wanted. But she wouldn't let it go; she kept going on and on for several minutes, and not discretely mind you, but in a loud, aggressive manner. I mean look, this is not the fanciest place - one step up from one of those Chinese Tui-Na massage places - and I think $15 was an entirely appropriate tip for a mediocre massage at a place like this. I can adjust my expectations about the service and the facilities but what I cannot stand is aggressively demanding a specific amount of tip from me. If you think the therapists should be guaranteed more pay then charge more up front, but don't charge one thing and then force me to leave the exact tip amount that you require. I could understand saying something to someone who didn't leave any tip at all, but we're talking about $15 vs $24, get a grip lady. I eventually had to just walk out after she wouldn't shut up. Bottom line, judging by other reviews, this harassment seems modus operandi for this place, and that on top of a so-so massage plus prices that are a tad high for what you're getting, I would not go again. Maybe if they stopped haranguing their customers or the prices were lower or the massages were better, I would change that opinion, but something's got to give. read more

I started going to the Brooklyn location for acupuncture, and followed Dr. Li to manhattan. Dr. Li is THE BEST. My sciatica is virtually cured. I have had other acupuncture but nothing like this. I try to go with some regularity just to feel awesome. I've never tried the spa services, but the acupuncture and cupping are like miracles under Dr. Li's touch. This place is a scam. I went here for a deep Tissue massage and the woman who gave me the massage had no idea what she was doing. She essentially gave me a backrub with some pastey material that did nothing to alleviate the rub. I also wasn't told that the deep tissue massage was more expensive than the Swedish massage so I switched from the Swedish to the Deep Tissue and was charged an additional 15 for the different services. Pretty difficult to get a massage when they are booked for the next three months. I bought the 75 minute couples massage Groupon for this place back in December and immediately tried to make an appointment. It's January 19th and today was my last attempt. They told me in very poor English that they were booked until March and I got the impression that they really could care less if I made an appointment or not. Went in here 41 weeks pregnant and really wanted to get labor moving along. Dr Li used just 6 needles in our session and a treatment on some pressure points on my feet. Whatever he did sure worked, I went into labor that same night. Active labor was only 4 hours. Another plus is that he takes insurance. Ignore the simple furnishings and lack of ambience. I've been to many well-known spas in the city: Bliss, Juvenex, Exhale -- but none compares to the massage that I received by Marina at Spring Thyme. She did a good job of concentrating on my problem areas, and made sure to ask more than once if the pressure was okay. It was obvious that she was an experienced and well-trained therapist which did not seem the case for a number of the therapists that worked on me at the larger spas. I have had many massages here and all the therapists are great...I've been going to Spring Thyme since they were on Nassau Street after a friend gave me a gift certificate and I'm so glad she did! Spring Thyme is a great find if you live, work (or both) in the Financial District. It's a great value for a relaxing massage and the deep tissue massages really melt away the stress from tight muscles. All the therapists that I have had ask about the pressure, room temperature and want to be sure you are comfortable. They make notes and remember the most important problem and stress areas. I wanted to write to say Thank you! I went here with a Groupon and received 2 accupuncture treatments from Dr. Wei H. Li. He was absolutely wonderful!!! He was patient and thorough. I felt he really took time with me and was a true experienced professional. He even did the cupping on me which was an extra bonus and something I had never tried before. I felt so relaxed that twice during my session, I felt I had dozed off. My 2nd treatment was yesterday and earlier in the day, the left side of my hip had started really hurting. I mentioned this to Dr. Li, which is why I believe he felt I would benefit from the cupping. Anyway, today, my hip doesn't hurt at all! Lastly, I felt the place was very clean and peaceful and the woman at the front (the receptiionist) couldn't have been sweeter! I go here for massages because they frequently run specials ($10-15 off various massages) and it's in the neighborhood. It's clean, quiet, and nice, but this isn't what you'd think of as a spa--not like a luxurious place for pampering. Still, they've always been super polite when I go and are really flexible with changing times and stuff. I've had Kayan for all my massages and she's very knowledgeable and skilled. She always asks if I have any problem areas and makes sure to spend extra time there. She also asks throughout if I'm comfortable and how the pressure is. It can get pretty chilly in the massage rooms but they have space heaters and blankets. Also, the second floor where the massage rooms are is kind of creaky, has low ceilings, and the walls are pretty thin. Don't let this stop you though--this is a good-priced, non-frilly, soothing massage. read more

I found the staff here to be very courteous, accomodating, and professional. "Zen" music plays throughout the entire place. The front area was very clean and neatly stocked with a vast array of herbs/vitamins and other misc wellness products. Once you go through the doors, you pass through a short hallway that has several rooms with bamboo 'curtains'. I believe those are the accupuncture rooms. Then there is a waiting area with a fountain, a mini beverage station (tea/water), and a couch. I think toward the right of this area is where they do the facials, waxing, scrubs, etc. I'm not sure. The color scheme is even pretty relaxing. It's a lovely lilac with a light green. (pretty). Upstairs is the massage rooms. The floors are a bit 'creaky' up there and you can hear through the walls somewhat. The rooms each have little heaters that go on and off in intervals.The room was very clean, as were the linens for the massage table. My masseuse was Kaya. She was very thorough and really took the time to work my troubled areas. Once the massage was over, she even took the time to show me some stretches that I should do since I sit in an office all day and have very tight areas of my body. All in all, this was a very reasonably priced, clean, professional, welcoming "spa" that I will definitely be going to again.
