We were shocked the server did not suggest a South African wine if we wanted a South African beverage. We then ordered Biltong sampler and they said it was not available. Then we ordered the Peri Peri chicken and they stated they did not have it available. He settled on the Boerewors that my BF said was the only representation on the menu. He also said the sausages are served larger in RSA, not like tiny finger length breakfast sausages. He said the "wors" was C grade. Springbok is a great place to go have drinks and bar food. They have a decent selection of bottled domestic / import, on tap, and a full bar. Now, as far as dinner fare its a hit or miss. I attended a birthday dinner for a friend a few days ago. More than half of the 8 that went weren't too happy with their meal. Most complained of the dryness of each sandwich and lack of flavor. I took a bite of the siphos chicken sandwich, the reuben special, and ate my sprinkbok burger. The two other sandwiches plus my burger were very dry. I had to slather my burger with some ketchup using my fries. I would probably only come here to drink some beer, grab some appetizers, and enjoy the game on tv or the live music. They have 1 pool table near the bar area and a huge tv next to the stage and a flat panel on the opposite wall in the dinning area. This place is fucking amazing. So amazing in fact, that I vaguely remember coming here a few times but never leaving... It is a chill spot and I feel like I can come here to eat anytime of the day. The wings and the filet mignon sandwhich are delicious! My only gripe is that sometimes the waitresses come off like smart asses with a bad attitude. Sometimes it is funny and other times it makes me think they might be riding the crimson tide. At other times... they are absolutelly nowhere to be found. My friend and I started off with Sammy's Samosas. It came with a delicious sauce and a small salad. The veg. samosas were spicy and hit the spot like a samosa would. After destroying the samosas with great voracity we were ready for more. I ordered the Porto Chicken Peri-Peri and I'm glad I did. I love spicy food and it was the perfect spice level with a kick of chicken. Loved it. The fries were fried and the salad was a salad. Washed everything down with a Corona and had nothing to complain about. The service was great and the waitress did an excellent job telling us which items were spicy and delicious. There are two of them. One in Van Nuys and the other in Long Beach. I'll write about the one in Van Nuys, because it's right down the street from me - and I used to go there before I got permanently 86'd. Don't ask, as it's over something stupid. But because I can't go there, doesn't mean you can't enjoy quality South African cuisine for yourself. Hmmm, let's see... the food is good. A bit pricey, but good nonetheless. They have a pool table and a couple of dart boards. There is a terrace where you can smoke and have your lunch / dinner. They used to do group events like go to boxing matches and host golf tournaments at the 9 hold executive course, but because I haven't been there in over 2 years, I'm not sure if they still do it. In my opinion, it's a great place to go on a Friday / Saturday night if you don't have anything to do. You can have dinner and party with the locals. I'd say that most of the locals there are nice and approachable. There are some dirty old men that will try and buy you a shot, but turn them down like any normal human would do. Service is good, and the servers / bartenders are cute... that is except Rocky. He's a dude. Nice guy. So there you have it. All in all, it's a cool place to go to party and eat dinner. Gosh, I really just hate to do this but... they give me no choice. The food here is awesome, but gotta tell you... on the website the buffalo wings are priced at $10.50 for 2 dozen. Right, jaw dropping ay. Same thing we thought. Until we called in about it and found out that this price was not honored but in fact the wings were now about $19.00 for 2 dozen! um... In fact, we were told that the website just hasn't been updated recently and that's why the prices haven't changed. Hmm... interesting, because the website was surely updated with yesterday's fight info but not the almost $10 increase in the hotwings. Well that's just great guys. South African food, rugby fans, live music, and international beers on tap: Springbok is dude heaven! We went to see a friend's band play a few weekends ago. The place was hopping, but not packed. We sat in the restaurant area, near the stage. (Seems kinda weird that the loud live music is where you eat, and not in the bar, but whatever.) The band--the Undercovers--played three fun, rockin', spot-on sets of KROQ covers. It was past dinner time when we went, so I just ordered a couple of appetizers for the table: mussels and garlic bread. Mmmm mmmm buttery goodness! Of course, I indulged in a couple of pints too. (Couldn't let the guys show me up, after all!) Yes, it's true: a cool place in Van Nuys! Great food. Prompt, friendly service. Good music. My boyfriend and I came here to watch the Kings game and the UFC fight on a Saturday night. I suggest coming about a half hour before the start of a game because anytime after that it gets crazy packed and you won't be able to find a table. There are two rooms inside with a bunch of TV's and a bar as well as a bunch of tables and a bar/bbq area outside with like 1 or 2 TV's. This seems like a total locals spot which might be why we had such amazing service from the hostess to the waitresses to the owners and even other patrons. They were roasting or grilling steak outside and it smelled absolutely heavenly! I haven't seen other bars or restaurants do that, so that definitely deserves acknowledgment. The drinks were poured heavily which I greatly appreciated. They have $3 fireball and jager shots as well as $3 bottled beers on Saturdays after 10 pm. We got their garlic fries, calamari and buffalo wings. I gotta say the garlic fries were a bit of a disappointment, but everything else was good. They have a lot of exotic foods here from other countries, so I definitely suggest coming on an empty stomach. Overall, this is one of my favorite places in the valley. I'm not so much of a valley guy, but this place is worth checking out. Here's what you need to know. 1. The Place: It's a South African bar, which in and of itself is awesome. Some of the folks there are actually from SA as well, which gives the place some authenticity. It feels a bit like a traditional pub, but with slightly varying personalities. The main entrance is a typical bar with pool table. But venture further towards the back and you have more of a restaurant feel. The best place is outside though. They have a bunch of TVs, too, if you want to watch the game...especially traditionally British games like Cricket, Soccer, and Rugby (once a month UFC). It has a really relaxed vibe in general and the clientele is generally pretty relaxed as well. 2. The Food/Drink: I really like the dishes I've had so far. I really don't deviate from the peri peri chicken and the chicken schnitzel. The peri peri comes with fries, salad and slaw. The peri peri sauce is delicious...just enough spice. If you haven't had peri peri chicken, give it a shot. I might like the schnitzel even more. Its done to perfection and the mushroom sauce is fantastic. It comes with veggies and mashed potatoes. All good. And drinks are standard, but every now and then they surprise you with something. Decent beer selection on tap, too. 3. The Service: The service is good. Some of the folks are super friendly and will bend over backwards for you...especially my mate Robin. You might find him making authentic SA sausages outside. Keep in mind this isn't fine dining, so they aren't going to fill your water two sips in, but they keep up well. There is nothing pretentious about the service. If you need something, just ask. They are very accommodating. The bottom line, it's a chill place to hang with friends, get some good grub, sit in the sun or heat lamps and have a few drinks and maybe watch a game/match. The mushroom sauce for the chicken is excellent and something that is a "must get". They include tip on to-go orders (which I completely understand.) I was really wary about trying out this place but as I was on a lunch break and didn't have much time (plus I wanted a place to have a drink), a co-worker took me to Springbok. The inside is very homely; it kind of has that rustic/neighborhood joint/hole in the wall feel. I ordered a Guinness on tap and my co-worker had the Widmer hefeweizen, which I must say is the BEST I have ever tasted Widmer on tap. For food I had the steak sandwich and subbed out my fries for the salad-- every bit of my food was AMAZING. Service-wise we did have longer than desired wait times, it may have been because of the lunch hour, but it really didn't seem like it was that busy to me ::Shrug::. A great place to crawl into during the afternoon for lunch. In the day, the place is usually modestly filled with a couple guys watching sports and random folks on lunch breaks. The bartenders and waitresses stay regular so they'll remember a familiar face. I've had their food and it is delicious. I tried the peri peri chicken sandwich and it was worth the money. Also, a great night spot. I used to frequent here quite a bit. Every night was filled with different folks. One night, my friend and I found ourselves celebrating a birthday among working actors. Another night, we found ourselves cheers'ing with fellow college graduates, and another night we found ourselves playing rock band. Throughout the week they try and host a special event like karaoke, rock band (video game), or maybe even rock band (real life cover band). There's usually cheap beer specials posted on a chalkboard, otherwise drinks average $4.50. They have pitchers available. The patio is a great place to smoke if you need to and meet interesting folks. The patio also has street access which is nice. This is my spot!! It's literally where everyone in Van Nuys knows your name.......if you come here often enough. My husband and I have been coming to this place for years since I live down the street from here. Drinks are great, always different entertainment nightly and you can sit inside or outside. It is always good. This is the place to go to to hang out with good friends, have fun, play some pool, some jukebox music or listen to karaoke or play the air guitar. The Springbok is an excellent restaurant / bar with Great food. The food here is EXCELLENT and I've had nearly everything on the menu. My personal favorite is the Salmon and the WINGS. The steak is great too. Love the Kobe Burger But then again, so is the grilled chicken (Wife loves it) . The lamb chops are as my father would say fantastico (italian-english). Well let me just say it's ALL Top notch . Service. I frequent this place for lunch or dinner at least once a week. The Springbok girls have been nothing short of amazing and there are times that it is standing room only. Found myself in Springbok for the first time last night and wasn't quite blown away but didn't feel the need to walk out after one drink either. The bar reminded me more of a lodge that belongs anywhere other than southern california - which is a plus in my book. Huge patio that i'll be checking out quite a bit this summer, pool table and a pretty good selection of tap beers ($5-6/pint). We showed up after the kitchen closed at 11p.m. so i can't speak for the food yet but it seemed like a place that would have an interesting menu. There was a guy playing an acoustic guitar and rocking out pretty much by himself on a stage in a back room. I'd normally give it about 3 stars but seeing as it's in Van Nuys and walking distance to my house i'll give it an extra one. Looking forward to checking out tuesday night trivia. read more

Was in the area for work....clients decided to pick this place. Ordered the fish and chips. The fish was under-cooked and wasn't very tasty. Wasn't sure what was wrong with it because the batter was crispy but when you bite into it, the fish was slimy and fell apart. I prefer my fried fish to be firm. We were there on Saturday around noon, and unfortunately sat next to a huge table of drunk guys, who obviously didn't care about anyone's enjoyment around the restaurant. One of the guy was talking like he was standing next to a jumbo jet. I am glad to learn that he is a champion softball player and how cool he really is. From someone who lived in South Africa for 6 years - I found it to be very South African...which I LOVED ! Food isn't as good as there though... and the service is FAR from it... The service in South Africa was just amazing , but somehow it get lost here in the US... and the servers do not have the right pride to their job...and does not treat it with the right professionalism. All in all - I may come again - it was quite good food and we didn't wait much. It's SPECIAL place - SPECIAL food - and for this , I'm willing to tolerate a bit...
