We had high expectations for this place, but my clam chowder was just ok, maybe it was because it was kind of cold. We also got the Bolognese, which was a bit cold. The other dishes we ordered were salmon which was steaming hot, flavor was ok. It was underwhelming. Service was great. read more

Unfortunately did not have the best experience with the food. First we had the crispy brussel sprouts and cauliflower which were very tasty but there was literally one cauliflower in it. The I had the Rocky Mountain trout which was not seasoned with even salt. It was just a piece of fish cooked in butter. I asked for some sort of sauce or seasoning to make it better, and the waitress asked me what kind of seasoning. So she brought be garlic powder and said sorry. We popped into the Boulderado for a drink and a quick snack after exploring downtown Boulder. It's in a very convenient spot if you're in the area doing some shopping. Just about everything we got was great. The clam chowder is a must-have. I'm not sure if I've ever had chowder with bacon before but now I'll want it there everytime. If you're here for brunch and looking for a drink, try the Bloody Mary. We all loved it. The Brussels sprouts have a great balsamic glaze and they're crunchy without being over cooked. Calamari was tasty too. The only think we didn't really like was the deviled eggs. The olives were a bit overpowering and gave the dish a flavor a bit off from what I'd normally expect. read more

Don't go if you're lactose intolerant. Not only is the chef butter-crazy when 65% of Americans are lactose free, he was unwilling to make accommodations. Local farm to table cuisine is what drew us to this restaurant. The local trout is the best thing we ate here, with the fish perfectly cooked and served with some buttery rice cooked with chopped leek and a side of asparagus. We also had one of the daily specials which was the lamb chops, served with broccolini & mashed potatoes. The flavor on the lamb chops was good but there was a lot of bone. It seemed that half of the chops were bones. We ordered rare to medium but the meat was served well done and was somewhat tough. The wine selections were decent. We paired Malbec and Rioja with our meal and the wines were very good. For dessert we had the key lime pie, which was good but just know that it's a small size dessert. The mango sorbet was served with two round scoops and a blackberry and was very good. The restaurant is located in the historic Hotel Boulderado downtown Boulder, on 13th Street and very close to the Pearl Street promenade. read more

The Iberico pork was outstanding! The mustard crusted salmon was highly rated. The meatballs were dry, according to the diner, and sent them back. Both the wines were excellent. Interesting building. Restaurant decor is pretty plain compared to hotel entryway. Lighting should be brighter and/or table centered. Would come back. read more

I am a very positive reviewer by nature and I have seen some issues in my day that I have not posted about, but rather contacted management privately. My brother and I went last night. It was a great night for conversation and loved the bartender who expertly picked a neat whiskey for him and the gin for my martini. We were eating light, so both of us has Caesars with salmon. My brother got a side of fries, that were forgotten but once we reminded the bartender they came pretty quickly. You should read the health violation report dated Jan 5, 2023. I didn't, until going into Yelp trying to figure out what I was going to rate Spruce and what I was going to say. I will look for this going forward before I choose a place! We were finishing up and a cockroach ran across the bar at my brother. If they come out in the light, there are millions of their brethren where you can't see... Good tasting food and 1:1 service. They need to address their food safety, at minimum, their pests. This would normally be a call to management, but we were there not long after the dated health report. I think visitors need to be aware. read more

This restaurant is ok but what used to make them stand out was their INCREDIBLE salmon and mushroom risotto dish. It was easily the best dish on the menu and the entire staff agreed. Unfortunately they decided to remove this staple from their menu. My family and I went recently and there was a "southwestern" version of the salmon risotto. It wasn't nearly as good as the original version. The original was perfect for a cold day when you needed some good comfort food. If they bring their signature dish back, we will definitely return. read more

We ordered three seafood dishes: tuna salad, scallops, and a salmon entree. All were perfectly cooked. It is so unusual to be served seafood that doesn't have the consistency of shoe leather. I have nothing but wonderful, positive, glowing things to say about this restaurant. Coming from super strict San Francisco we were delighted to find we could dine-in and actually eat *inside* a restaurant (SF take notes - this is how its done). I don't know if it was because we the first diners, the lack of diners due to COVID-19, or the fact it was a Wednesday morning, but it was truly my favorite meal during my time in Colorado (and beats out most breakfasts I can get back in California). Since I don't dine out often (and even less recently so because of our city's lockdown) I always get a Benedict. My husband got a Denver omelette because, when in Rome.... (ok, ok I know this is technically Boulder). My avocado Benedict with sun dried tomatoes, lemony hollandaise, and side of bacon was amazing. The eggs were poached perfectly and the yolks created a creamy dressing for the English muffins. The bacon was thick cut and generous. I didn't expect to eat all three pieces but somehow the plate was empty when we were done. The star though, was really the home fries. I can't believe they were the best I've ever had - crispy outsides with creamy insides. And the ingenuity of hiding sweet potatoes here and there for a slight, sugary kick was surprising and amazing and I wanted MORE. My husbands Denver omelette was cheesy and the scrambled eggs custardy and just perfectly set. He really enjoyed his (but I think enjoyed mine too since he finished it). The service was top notch and we were very comfortable with how all the staff were wearing masks and handling food. Of all the meals I've had in Colorado (from Colorado Springs to Este Park) this one was definitely the most delicious and most memorable. So happy they're open and so sad I might not come back. However, our entrées took more than 80 minutes to arrive - in contrast to the many other parties who arrived after us & who received their meals in a timely fashion. In addition, it was obvious that our meals were not freshly cooked. They were barely warm & it was obvious that they had likely sat under a heater or other. After making multiple comments to our server and the manager, our meal was "comped." However, I was very disappointed by this experience given my friend had driven from Denver, because I had been told that "the Spruce was worth it for Sunday brunch." read more

Took a group of clients out for lunch. Made the reservation the week before (very pleasant on the phone). I was a little nervous to see reviews stating that the service wasn't good. I will say, we had the nicest waiter. I'm thinking maybe they were newer as they didn't check on us or give us updates on the arrival of our food, but a very polite/friendly demeanor which I appreciate! The wait - again was a little nervous seeing this in other posts but I will say it was true. The wait time was a little too long. We ordered one app ALONG with our meal orders. It took an hour to get our food. Was a little disappointing especially since people don't have much time for lunch anymore. Food - I can only speak for myself (modern tuna Nicoise). Was interesting because it was a "deconstructed one" which both my client who also ordered that thought was strange. I personally would have liked it all mixed together. The tuna was crusted too much - that part kinda overtook the flavor. Would I give it another try......probably, although it wouldn't be anytime soon as I would prefer going to a place with amazing food and a nice timeframe for getting food. read more

Came at 11:20am on New Year's Day, super cute spot and great atmosphere. We were sat right away and it seemed quite busy and possibly understaffed. We were not greeted for about 20 minutes until a manager came over to take our order. Drinks were quick but we waited about 40 more minutes for our food to come out and unfortunately I did not receive the dish I ordered. Manager was nice enough to give us a complimentary glass of wine. It did not seem as though we had a server and it was hard to track down anyone to help us. We were staying in the Hotel Boulderado and this was their breakfast venue. My only initial complaint was that it was NOT easy initially to determine where the hotel served breakfast... Their website could use some work. Once my wife or I figured it out, we decided we'd probably eat there (though we explored other options nearby as walk-able backup plans). When breakfast time came, we wandered down to the lobby and found this place just opening. It was COVID season, so the staff wore masks. I think patrons had to wear them walking to the tables. The menu seemed slightly limited, but we both found options we liked. The breakfast platters / specials appeared to be too much food for me, so I opted for a few selections from the a la carte menu. My one pancake and bacon was quite good! My wife liked her platter also, though I had to help a bit to finish it. Our table was in what looked like a finished (former) porch, so we got to do a bit of people-watching out on the adjacent sidewalk. I'd recommend this seating area over the more view-limited main dining room, actually. I'd consider another breakfast here if I stayed at the Boulderado again. read more

This is the main restaurant in the Boulderado Hotel. We had breakfast here, the huevos rancheros were excellent and so was the oatmeal, which was topped with plump blueberries, bananas, and brown sugar. Service was spotty-the food took a long time to arrive, the waiter never checked back, and the oatmeal was delivered without a spoon and it took effort to get someone's attention to get a spoon. But the room is classic, the feeling is relaxed and cozy, and the good food outweighed the service glitches. read more

We had a delicous and enjoyable meal tonight, and my 5th star is for our waiter, Zach, who really made the night special. Zach was patient and kind to us, he was kind to his server-in-training, and he was kind to the NUTSO customer at the next table, who had a complaint for every single interaction. The customer was loud, rude, and didn't seem to know that the rest of us do not give a damn whether they like the wine, whether they think "almost every item on this menu is dangerous," and we definitely did NOT need to know that this customer knows what 6 ounces should look like on a plate because they weigh their own dog's meat portions every day...Come on, get a LIFE. This super obnoxious fellow customer could have ruined our evening, but Zach just kept doing an excellent job and it was impressive. During our stay at the Boulderado, we decided to have breakfast at the Spruce Farm & Fish. I had a bit of work to finish, so my partner went down ahead of me. When I got there about 15 minutes later, she still hadn't been served the breakfast she'd ordered, so I thought I'd order one as well. I placed my order, including coffee, and we waited some more. 15 minutes later, the coffee hadn't arrived, so we asked again. More time elapsed, and the waiter returned with two cups of coffee, and no cream. Asked for cream, and he returned some time later with cream in one of those little cups ketchup is served in. Shortly after this, my partner's breakfast arrived. It was not as described in the menu, and after the asked, the waiter returned carrying a small plate with the rest of the ingredients for her omelette. Meanwhile, there was no sign of my own breakfast. After perhaps a half-hour, we decided to cut our losses, paid the bill, and left. During all this time, the restaurant was less than half full. At times, I saw members of the staff shuffling around, perusing the contents of drawers, and doing little else. There are plenty of infinitely better places to eat breakfast within a 5-minute walk of the Boulderado. I suggest you eat at one of them, and steer well clear of Spruce Farm & Fish. It is clearly being run by incompetents. read more

My biggest issue is the speed of service. We opened the restaurant (without realizing it) and thought it was pretty cool. Maybe they were just slow as it was the start of the night but even once it started to fill, we heard another couple complain on the wait. Food was delicious but be prepared to wait for drinks, appetizers and then your entree. Of course there is reasonable amount of time to wait, these were a little too long. May have been a fluke as it was the start of the evening, so would try again especially since the food was delicious. read more

Hostess was very nice but waitress was not particularly friendly. Service was very slow. Some tables got bread but we did not. We ordered the calamari which was fried poorly and the breading was falling off. It was also extremely fishy tasting which isn't typical of calamari. The tuna salad was overwhelmingly salty with the tuna being soaked in soy sauce and brown in color which is off putting. The French dip sandwich was super soft and squishy and was lacking salt. It took our server, Tim, forever to even get to our table but (5 of us) immediately ordered our drinks. He came back quite a while later (no drinks) and took our appetizer order...40 minutes after our arrival our appetizers showed up BEFORE our drinks. He brought out 2 of our five drinks and asked to take our food order, I replied we'd order once we received all of our drinks (my Old Fashioned was absolutely horrible), his excuse was the bartender had to wash all of the glasses. The food was ok at best but the absolute kicker of all was Tim's attitude. We ate here for breakfast because we were staying at the Boulderado during our wedding weekend to be close to the venue. To start, the lady that seated us was extremely rude and just tossed the menus on the table when we got to our table and walked away. She had a hung over feeling to her and that's probably because the night before the entire bar was partying (we could hear it from our room). As for food we both ordered the prime rib hash and it was terrible, it was lacking flavor and the meat in it was severely lacking and were tiny little pieces. My husband's had maybe two pieces of meat in it meat in it overall and it was definitely not worth the price. Our server was ok and checked on us a couple times but no one here seemed to actually want to be here. Again it was probably because they were all there partying the night before.
