Outstanding service by Megan for breakfast at Spruce, a little less syrup in my latte, no problem! A little change to a menu item, no problem! She even saw a regular customer that she hadn't seen in awhile and remembered his order exactly...and it was all a la carte items. The music and ambiance at breakfast were great, with a street level city view and jazz/blues playing in the background! I had the jalapeño biscuit with egg, green chili and salsa. This is the best meal we've had in a restaurant in at least a couple years. Ordered the brussels sprouts and cauliflower appetizer (vegan + maybe GF?) and it's safe to say they knocked it out of the park. Shareable size, perfect flavor combination (salty, sweet, smoky & spicy), perfectly cooked. Our entrées, the salmon and porcini risotto, and the bucatini with chard and garlic breadcrumbs, came out quickly and were perfectly prepared. Service was on point (Boulder cool-casual-friendly). We hadn't been to Spruce since it first opened several years ago, but we will be back again soon for sure! read more

Made a reservation and was told in order to be sat at a decent size table we need more in our party. Although they had other 2 parties sitting at a 4 top. Then after waiting about 45 minutes for my food I ordered the eggs avocado Benedict and the poached eggs were over cooked and the Hollandaise sauce was cold? The server told us that they can't warm the hollandaise sauce. $15 for this entree? Wow atmosphere is nice and server was trying but the food is bad here. It is a nice restaurant setting, but nothing made me feel going back there. I ordered snapper, the food tasted good, the potion is pretty small. They didn't offer any bread. So after the snapper, I was only half full. I added small Caesar salad. It put me off. The salad is very much Costco product. As you can see, the lettuce turned red, I would not even eat it at home when I see the salad is so old. They served to their customers. read more

We are regular patrons of Boulder Social which is owned by the same company that owns this restaurant and the Boulderado Hotel. Since we like Boulder Social so much, we decided to take our family to Spruce Farm & Fish. It's been years since we ate here last. Our expectations were high and they were met. Two of us had the Bison meatloaf and it was moist and great. One had the chicken and it might have been everyone's favorite. We also did the meatballs which were great and one caesar salad with salmon...totally excellent. The consensus amongst us was that this place had better food than Flagstaff Mountain restaurant for less money. Service and staff were very good as well. Highly recommended. I love visiting the Boulderado and so do a lot of locals and tourists alike. The menu is nice and seasonal but preparation is not so great. They do make steak well but it's also supposed to be seafood which is one of the draws for me. Service was very slow so the truffle fries and other items were soggy more than crispy. The scallops crudo which are sweet and delicate were served in a fishy tasting sauce garnished with mint and heavily salted crostini. The dish didn't make sense. Trout was served skin on , but also soggy and extremely bland. Trout is local to the region so embarrassing it's not cooked well. The bed of rice also very bland and mushy and asparagus so fibrous I literally couldn't swallow for fear of choking. Boulderado is one of our jewels and I really miss the days when it was a gourmet experience. And sadly after several visits I have yet to find a dish I really enjoy. read more

We were just a family visiting Boulder for the 4th of July weekend and checking out CU for our high school senior. Spruce had good reviews, looked charming and the menu seemed varied, elevated and inspired. Our dreams were dashed after we ordered. The service was just OK and it took much too long for our food to come out, with no explanation from our server. When the food came out, she never came back by to check on us which is unfortunate as we needed refills, condiments, and one of our entrees was so undercooked, it was inedible. Enough time passed that we went from trying to flag our server down (or anyone) to send back the woefully under-prepared meat and get a replacement to just asking for a manager so we could put a swift end to the meal. Even that turned out to be a struggle. Hear me now. You've seen this in my other reviews: if the manager is hard to find or isn't readily available, you've already identified the major issue. Best part of the meal? This restaurant is attached to the charming Hotel Boulderado which offers live music in their selfie-worthy lobby and is steeped in turn-of-the-century charm. We took a spin through there on the way out to shake the stink of Spruce off of us before heading to Pearl Street. read more

Just not what I was hoping for, even though I suspected it would be very plain. I will say our server was very good. This is such a classic place, the decor and ambience was not new to me. I have eaten here, on and off, for a few decades. It has had several re-inventions, others more successful over the decades but eventually they all fade. I think it just needs a bit of an upgrade on the food. They try to play it too safe and fall back on the fact that it's a hotel restaurant in a popular location, often for tourists. And some longtime regulars who are aging. But I've moved on so maybe it's my problem too. My trout was bland but at least not overcooked. The "wild" rice pilaf was actually mostly white rice and carrots but was generally fine as a side though a bit salty. The asparagus, though "skinny" was rather woody and I only enjoyed the top two inches of each stalk and left some lower portions behind. My cider was OK. Though described as chili guava, I could not discern any spiciness. I tasted bits of my husband's meal and shared our friend's calamari. It was all just very bland, a piece of steak a bit tough, the calamari a bit stiffer than I like but not greasy or too salty and with some yummy toasted garlic slices scattered through. The creme brûlée was very fresh and tasty but such a tiny portion. The Boulderado should be able to do better on dinners. Having read other reviews, I suspect if you are an out of towner hotel guest and want an easy brunch and want to enjoy the historic charm and architecture that you have never seen before, you will do just fine. read more

Ambiance was beautiful, great location, food was pretty good, service needs some love. Hubby and I stayed in Boulder to have a little getaway and see a show at the super close by Boulder theater. In short the Boulderado hotel is such a beautiful and charming place with a great happy hour menu. Location was perfection. Food was good - the Bolognese was a very different recipe than I'm used to. Still good just...different. Our waiter didn't appear overwhelmed by any stretch as we ate before the dinner rush so his lack of attention to refilling a drink, clearing plates, etc. was sad. I tried to give him the polite "sir we would love our check" look several times but that didn't work. Had to get up and ask him for another drink and our check. I took my sweetheart for his birthday dinner to Spruce Farm & Fish. We shared the brussels sprout & cauliflower in chili soy sauce for an appetizer - delicious! They also gave us a free dessert, since it was his birthday - the carrot cake was FABULOUS! The main courses, however, were a little disappointing. I had scallops with pasta, which was good but not quite warm enough. My boyfriend had the mushroom linguine and added salmon for protein. The salmon was excellent but the mushroom linguine had a sauce that was TOO earthy tasting for me. We may come back to try some other main courses, but it won't be anytime soon. We decided to try out the lobster pop-up special the restaurant was hosting and I truly wish we hadn't. It absolutely was not worth the high price of nearly $40 per person. The first course of soup and salad were just fine. From then on, the rest of the meal was just a disappointment. Prime rib was undercooked. Lobster Mac and cheese had one of our guests vomiting after from food poisoning, and the sides of potatoes and sweet corn could not have been any blander. Strawberry shortcake consisted of a dry biscuit with whipped cream and a few strawberries which made for a pathetic dessert and ending of the meal. With a total coming to close to $300 for five people, this entire experience was a huge letdown. Had high hopes since we love this historical hotel, but find somewhere else for your "nice" dinner or celebration night out. Wish we could get those few hours and $$$ back! read more

My only issue is this silly OTT habit of waitress asking ' was everything fabulous?'. Unless this is best meal you have eaten it probably wasn't. Good yes, perfect, no. The ceviche was not citrusy, the veggies were not marinated enough- overall bland and unflavorful. The bison filet was dry and overcooked and smashed potatoes were tasty but the blueberry sauce was odd, like an ice cream syrup. The waiter was great though. read more

The steak was poor quality, tough and overcooked. due to the poor service, did not have the time to have it remade. hoping to end the meal with a delicious dessert once again, very disappointed ordered the Keylime pie, and the texture was grainy. wanted to love it that was not the case for being an iconic landmark in Boulder couldn't be more disappointed and have no desire to try it again. Yummy breakfast! We decided to eat in the hotel Boulderado and this was a great choice. Good varied choices for breakfast and we tried cinnamon bun pancakes, prime rib hash, avacado Benedict, and a Denver omelet. Everything was delicuous and prices ranged from $10-$12. Great service with quick service and coffee refills. Overall, we really enjoyed the meal. The blood mary was also a hit. read more

Fantastic experience here. They were our first stop for food and drink when visiting Boulder and we loved it so much, it was the only establishment we returned for a 2nd time, to close out the trip. The food and drink were top notch, as was the service and ambiance. Our servers were hospitable, gave great local activity suggestions, and were accommodating. The customer service of the staff was above and beyond. During our second visit, we were waiting a tad long for our meal, only to find out the back kitchen was having an issue poaching eggs. We had to leave for the airport shortly, and the S + F team comped our meal, the manager checked in on us and apologized. They ended up getting our meal to us with a few moments to spare and while we tried to pay for the meal, they refused due to the inconvenience it put us through. Our server (didn't catch his name) and the manager were thoughtful and again, went above and beyond. The actions and immediate response of a restaurant due to a minor inconvenience was incredible and added to us loving them even more. You don't get that everywhere you go. We will go back there for sure when we return to Boulder and recommend them to all our traveling friends! read more

Came at 11:20am on New Year's Day, super cute spot and great atmosphere. We were sat right away and it seemed quite busy and possibly understaffed. We were not greeted for about 20 minutes until a manager came over to take our order. Drinks were quick but we waited about 40 more minutes for our food to come out and unfortunately I did not receive the dish I ordered. Manager was nice enough to give us a complimentary glass of wine. It did not seem as though we had a server and it was hard to track down anyone to help us. Food was great and we appreciated the complimentary wine, but it would've been nice to have a server. read more

I stumbled across Spruce Farm and Fish while day tripping in Boulder and walking to another restaurant I had chosen for brunch. Seeing that it was connected to the Historic Boulerado hotel I figured it should be good, plus it was cold, so I popped in. There is an outside entrance to the restaurant as well as entry directly from the hotel lobby. To Note: it may have been check-out time at the hotel (on Sunday at 11:30 ish) because that whole area was PACKED and BUSY! Being by myself I figured I would get quicker service sitting at the bar, but in hindsight I wish I would have opted for the table I was offered, and maybe would have had more attentive service. Granted when I initially sat at the bar (towards the middle) it was full, but about 10 minutes later all the chairs directly around me opened up (3 on my one side, two one the other) ... and that is how long it took for me to get a menu! But I actually had to ask someone who walked behind the bar to get me a menu (turns out it was a manager), as the bartender never came over to offer one even when it cleared out and it was apparent I was just sitting there. The bar is really not that huge! I will say the manager also graciously took my drink order and delivered it promptly. And ANOTHER waiter walking behind my chair who overheard when I finally asked for a menu also offered to bring me some water. That was the last of my drinks, as throughout the rest of my time there the person behind the bar never bothered to come back over to refill both my empty glasses :( Never bothered to bring silverware when my food was delivered either, until I asked. Maybe it's a Boulder "thing' ... Ok so past the service - I actually enjoyed my food choices. The Lavender Mimosa was so DELISH! - Champagne with a house made lavender syrup! Sure do wish I had gotten another one *sigh* To eat I tried the House Smoked Verlasso Salmon Hash - two eggs any style, onions, red peppers, crispy potatoes, smoked salmon, fried capers, dill cream, and my choice of toast. It was also tasty with pretty decent sized chunks of salmon. I expressed my concerns to the manager who helped me when I left. He did apologize and state they were busy. I would hope that it was communicated to that particular bartender that if he has time to chat with some people at the bar, at least make the effort to make the rest of the customers feel welcome with the basic offer of a drink, refill a glass, or offer silverware, without the customer having to ask. read more

I really wanted to like this place however it fell a little short of my expectations. My family and I went here after a very important event and we expected better service than we got. We ordered drinks from one guy who we never saw again. About 15 minutes another waiter came over to get our drink order again. We ordered our appetizers which didn't come until 20 minutes later. That would have been fine except our entrees came about five minutes after that. It just wasn't a very pleasant experience for me or for anyone in my party. The food was excellent and if I was rating the place just on food it would be 5 stars. It was okay. It was expensive and I don't think the experience was worth the money. I don't even know where to begin. My friend, and our myself stayed at the hotel connected to this place so we were hungry and ventured down. Wow, am I glad we checked this place out. Most hotel restaurants are weak sauce, but wow this place was so good. The service was quick and friendly. Our drinks were never empty, and he checked in on us just the right amount. I can't stand when servers keep bugging ya, this guy was perfect (I forgot his name unfortunately). So, we didn't eat all day and brought our appetites. We started with the market oysters and wowwwwwww were they good. We each had one of the three kinds they had. They were so good. We also shared the truffle fries (weird combo I know, but hey it was good). The oysters were so good we snagged an extra tray. I will travel to co just to eat here again! read more

Also the tomato bisque and the clam chowder: fresh and fine. Have the oysters: we preferred the "west coast" but also had the "east coast"-- both are briny and delicious. The arugula salad was perfectly dressed and the hot buttered rum was spicy and hit the sweet spot. (The warm rolls with rosemary were great to dip in the au jus, too) Do not sleep on the surprise of the night: flourless chocolate torte with cherry purée and basil! Coffee is delicious. I had the Farm Omelette and my husband ordered the Cinnamon Roll Pancakes. The omelette was huge and super filling. The chorizo had just the right amount of spice. The pancakes were good. Our server, Sam, was very attentive and informative. He gave us some great ideas for the Rocky Mountain National Park.
