Definitely changed my mind. When I saw that a Yelp event was going on at Spruce, I decided to step in for a second impression. I loved the personalities: the receptionist, different from the one I wrote about in my last review, was equally friendly and welcoming. The esthetician was personable, considerate of my interest in fragrance-free/light skincare and really tempted me to book an appointment for a facial here. But, lucky me! I was picked for a hair demo and what Hillary did to my hair was nothing short of miraculous. I booked an appointment and came back for a proper cut. I love the way my hair looks now, and am so happy I have found a hair salon that really knows how to deliver based on what you've got to work with. Still on the fence about massage services, but clearly this place is worth a second chance so I'll probably be booking an appointment for bodywork sometime in this new year. read more

I had virgin, dark brown, hair and was always too scared to have anything done to it, that is until I found Mia!! I resorted to google to find the best colorist in the Bay Area and Mia was the first one to pop up. After reading several reviews on Yelp, I made my first appointment with her last December 2013 for a free color consultation. She made a great first impression and I could tell she knew what she was taking about when discussing my color options. Mia walked me through the process and gave me her professional opinion on what would look best on my skin tone. I ended up getting balayage highlights that accentuated my face and the rest of my hair cut. The color looked AMAZING even after a couple of months of having it done. This was perfect for me because I was not yet ready to dye my hair completely. I was so happy with the results that I ended up making my second appointment 3 weeks ago to take my hair to the next level in terms of color. I have always had dark hair and wanted a change and Mia was the only person I trusted. She gave my base a honey brown color and added balayage highlights. I also got an amazing haircut by Ashley!!! My haircut accentuated the color and gave me the natural beachy wave look I wanted. Mia also tinted my eye brows and OMG I could not believe it was me when I looked in the mirror. Tinting the eye brows completely changed the look and made my hazel eyes pop. I had concerns that the brows wouldn't match my hair color but she nailed the color right on. I have received so many compliments on my hair and convinced three of my girl friends to schedule appointments!!! I will say that it was pretty pricy, but it was worth every penny!!!! Spruce is treat yo' self in its full glory. My gal pal and I came last Sunday for their soft opening, and I left with radiant skin and shiny nails, both of which have prettified my week. Amanda is an excellent esthetician, and even though I only had a mini-facial during the opening night, my skin still feels great. She was full of knowledge about different products and I enjoyed her all-natural approach. Stephanie did our nails in the back room, and was an absolute delight to talk to, and was a wiz at sprucing up our fingers while we reclined in cool designer chairs. The spa itself is really welcoming since it's in a re-purposed home it feels comfortable and hospitable. Supervised playgroup in a rear cottage with a lovely garden for my little one while mom gets pretty and buys back the appearance of her mis-spent youth. 2- NAILS: Mani/pedis in the rear sunroom while sipping lemon water in a reclining Eames chair. Nice stuff. No loud or noxious massage chairs lined up assembly line style with suspect water in a brash environment. 3- SALON/MASSAGE: Salon downstairs, massage and treatments upstairs: Salon is fun, bustling, and full of energy, but upstairs is serene and quiet for relaxation. I've been to a couple of salons in the Bay Area, ranging from the cheap chinatown cut to the full $$$$ salon experience. What I can say is, for the most part, you get what you pay for, but not always. Spruce is captivating from the start, dressed with a bright teal exterior. The interior is lined with adorable wallpapers, clean, and refreshing. I was greeted upon arrival by Nina, who offered me a selection of coffees and tea. Brielle, my stylist was ready for me promptly at the time of my scheduled appointment. I was overdue for a haircut, knew vaguely what I wanted, so I decided to take a risk! Brielle gave me the best haircut I've had thus far. She clearly demonstrated her experience with her scissors, and was immensely thorough and careful with my hair. Quite possibly the best massage (80 minutes) and facial (apricot peel) I've ever had - and I'm a very frequent indulger of each. Jackie's massage was the perfect combination of soft hands and strong touch. She's essentially a massage ninja. Amanda is extremely knowledgeable of skin care and holistic properties having been in the business for 20 years. Spruce carries the full Arcona skin care line. (I had never heard of it, but it smells amazing and feels even better.) I'll absolutely be back - especially considering I used to make the trip across the bay to Burke Williams for these services. All in, the cost with tip and $150 in product was less than I'd normally pay for just services. Very happy to have found this place. read more

I heard about this place through Mia, one of the colorists here. I came for a haircut and got Kelly as my stylists. She is AMAZING!!! I've never had such an awesome cut with very little direction. My hair was originally long and bland, not much bounce and personality to it. I came in with no picture and just told her what I was looking for. I have thick asian hair that can be difficult and unpredictable to work with, but she loves a challenge and was so professional and knew what she was doing. I'm going to be her new regular :) love love this place. Oh and the folks here are sooo friendly. I have already recommended this place to many of my friends. I'm here to praise the best, and today that person is Ama! What type of sylist is Ama? She's the "OhMyGoodness WhereHaveYouBeen I'veLooked AllOverOaklandToFindYou" stylist of my beauty dreams! Seriously, she is exceptional. I have long hair and for the past 2 years since I moved to Oakland, I've been looking for a stylist. I tried three Aveda salons (SF, Piedmont, Emeryville) and my haircuts ranged from "meh" to "mmeh." Nothing exciting. In some cases, it looked like my hair had only been trimmed, despite the fact that I asked for layers. I've been frustrated by shelling out cash for a mediocre cut. But I'm not really one to write a negative review unless I feel like I have been scammed. (See my reviews on florists in the Midwest) Back to Ama. I walked in to a very professional, modern salon with a fantastic design aesthetic. The receptionist offered me water or tea. Ama gave me a free consultation (some places charge extra for this.) She described her approach, made sure I bought in to her concept and proceeded to give me the VERY BEST haircut I've had in a decade. She took her time even though I was the last appointment of the day. And the blow-out made my toes curl. Upon returning home, my boyfriend immediately commented; "You look like a rockstar!" My brother chimed in "Yeah, I saw you walking on the street and I didn't recognize you." (For my brother to notice anything is kind of a big deal.) Flattery works, because I ended up taking those brutes out for dinner to show off my beautiful hair. But what about the next day? When you wash out the rockstar and have to go back to your ordinary pedestrian life? I'm please to report that the haircut stands on its own. It's been a few weeks now and I have never been happier with my hair. She gave my long drab hair a new life. A life filled with body, waves, bounce, shape and best of all... it just dries that way. Finding a new salon and someone to take care of your locks can be either amazing or a disaster. Luckily, I found Spruce. My first appointment with Ama was fabulous. Most colonists I've been to haven't been able to achieve such a rich overall color on the first go. She heard what I was going for and nailed it. Back for another cut and color, I trust her to guide me on both the color and type of cut best suited to my face and lifestyle. My mother in law also went to Ama when she was in town and came home lighter and brighter. The cut was really flattering and could be maintained with little maintenance. I also had the best maternity massage here. Super attentive, gentle and oh so relaxing! The staff Is the nicest I've met. LOVE this place! A gem of a salon/spa! The vibe is upscale but without the "attitude". The staff was incredibly warm, welcoming and helpful. The facial is a must! I found Spruce through Yelp and thought I'd try it out. I got a Brazilian Blowout and haircut with Hillary for my first visit and was blown away! They offer you prosecco/coffee when you first walk in and everyone is so friendly and positive. I absolutely LOVED the haircut and treatment that I received. Begone crazy frizzy curls! I came back the following week for Balayage highlights. I loved the highlights, but the color wasn't quite right. I called back the next day and they were more than happy to take me back at no charge to fix up the color. Although I wasn't too happy the first time around, the second time I left the salon beaming. Lots of things have changed since my original review of Spruce. Ama, Bailey, and Ameena have moved on, and they no longer offer manicures, pedicures or on-site day care. However, many things haven't changed! I can still count on Hillary to give me a stylish, low-maintenance haircut and Angelica and Rob to make me feel welcome once soon as I walk in the door. Jackie is also still there giving fantastic massages. She's amazing! I always leave Spruce feeling happier and more relaxed than when I came in. Facial. My original appointment was for a message. I really wanted to add a facial and they were able to squeeze me in prior to my massage and at the last minute. My facial was with Amanda. 60 min of pure bliss!!! The best facial I've ever had. The Arcona products were awesome. My facial included arm and leg massage. Massage. My 60 min massage was with Jackie. She was really nice and attentive. She ensured I was comfortable and the pressure was right. I will definitely be going back to Spruce. I was given a nice glass of champagne in between my services. It was my first time here and I got the cut I was really hoping for. I came in with really thick hair down to the middle of my back that doesn't always agree with shorter cuts but I was ready for a change. Brielle took great care in giving me a flattering shoulder-skimming style with a soft A-line. It's much lighter and more manageable than previous cuts I've gotten from other places because she skillfully and meticulously created less bulk so I don't have to spend more than 5 minutes taming it every morning. Her tips on how to keep it looking polished are easy to do and the texturizer she recommended really works for me. I've been so disappointed with the places I've tried short cuts with before, but now I will definitely come to Spruce/Brielle from now on. Wow, I had an amazing facial this week at Spruce! The room was warm and relaxing and the facial treatment was exactly what I was looking for -- natural and exfoliating with some extractions using a gentle loop tool. My favorite part, though, was the neck, shoulder, arm and foot massage that came with the facial. I was so relaxed after the session that I had to "refocus" in the front lounge for 15 minutes before driving!! The Arcona products she used on my skin were great. I picked up the Youth serum a VitC skin lightener and the Cranberry Gommage Exfoliator. Quite an amazing line of products! Love this place! Because I work in the city, I usually end up in San Francisco for hair, nails, etc., but found myself able to cut out of work early on a Friday and decided to check out this new place on College since it's close to my house. The staff was very nice and I loved the look of the place -- calm and serene, with an urban feel. I had my nails done and also waxing. Both services were great. I also thought prices were VERY reasonably (much cheaper than what I am used to in the city). I will definitely be back. Also - childcare at a salon? Brilliant! 5 stars for a stellar experience at Spruce! Yelp reviews led me to Mia who worked her magic and gave me the caramel ombré action I'd been searching for. I was convinced my hair could only go brassy orange when lightened but Mia knows her stuff. She asked a lot of questions and was honest with me about not knowing my hair yet and warned me it could take a couple of sessions to get it right. I appreciated that and was pleasantly surprised with the outcome. And to add to my delight, Ama gave me the best long haircut I could hope for. She even showed me some styling tricks. It now has more movement, holds wave easier and really complements the color. Plus, the reception staff was super friendly and not at all standoffish like at some salons. One thing to watch out for is they don't list their prices for Waxing except to say "starting at $20." I called and was told $60 over the phone, but when I went to pay I was told $65. I mentioned this, but since I didn't have anything in writing, I had to pay the $65. Overall, my experience was okay though. They were nice & offered water/tea before & after my appointment. I had a facial with Amanda and she is outstanding. From the moment I walked in I was treated with fantastic customer service. I was offered champagne, allowed to take my time getting my 2 year old situated with the daycare attendant Wendy. I was not rushed during my facial and left feeling amazing. Included in the facial was a mini foot rub, shoulder, hand and neck massage as well. It's amazing! My daughter loved Wendy and even gave her a kiss and a hug goodbye wich made me feel even better. Spruce really deserves all the wonderful accolades it gets. I saw Hillary for the first time about a week ago for a cut and color and it was probably the best salon experience I have had in the bay area (maybe ever!). Started off with a 20 minute complimentary back massage while I waited (amazing business practice right there, I'll be back to see her for a full body massage), coffee or tea at your disposal, and lovely interactions with their nice staff. Then after giving Hillary a little insight to the kind of cut and color I wanted, and building on her expert advice, we were off to work! She is so friendly and intuitive. The quality of the cut is so spot on, the color (full bayalage to summer-ize my dark hair) was impeccable. I can't remember the last time I walked out of a salon so completely confident that I had made an excellent choice and it was absolutely worth every penny. I came here for my first hair cut in about ten months. I get lazy about these sorts of things (and also can't really afford to get a nice cut every six weeks) but was super tired of putting my hair into a messy bun; it was time for a change. Based on the great reviews, I made an appointment with Tsomuka. I was pretty anxious when I arrived knowing that I was gearing up to cut off a good 9" of hair (Karli Kloss inspired) but instantly felt at home when greeted by Angelica, who asked if I wanted a glass of champagne. Sipping on some rose(!), I only waited a few minutes until Tsomuka came out and brought me into the back room, which happens to overlook the backyard. It's a cozy little place that is a converted house, so it's a bit quirky, but also welcoming. Tsomuka did such a good job on my hair! She wasn't thrilled the way my hair at first took to the styling / blowdrying she did (I have REALLY pin straight hair), so she worked on it some more and even spent more time after closing to make sure it was perfect. I now have an awesome hair cut that's easy to manage and style, plus, I now have a place in the neighborhood that I trust! The best part? The $65 price tag. Seriously. Amazing. read more

I had an ok experience with this Salon outside of amazing color with Mia who is no longer there. They had champagne for clients the first time I was there which was awesome, but the 2nd time did not.
