We haven't been here in more than 10 years. Decided to give it a try as Yelp indicates the fish sandwiches are good. Onion Rings were great! Nice breading, perfectly fried, good flavor. Fish sandwich was good. Wish that there were more options like pickles, onions or lettuce, but it was tasty. Only problem was the bun was not that fresh. Fish on the cod fish and chips was a somewhat small piece, but it was tasty. Fries were not that good. They tasted like the oil they had been fried in. Food was okay but not worth what I spent. I ordered onion rings. My order contained four (4) onion rings. I paid almost $2 a pop for those onion rings. They were okay. Not great. A fountain drink runs $3.50 before tax. Massive rip off. Fountain drinks are HUGE moneymakers for a restaurant. I could almost see that kind of upcharge for bottled soda, but not fountain. Spuds has been the go to fish & chips hot spot for the greater Seattle area for my entire life. Growing up in Kirkland the location there has been going strong for decades!! It's far and away the best authentic fish&chips I've had ever. Off the bat "it's expensive" is the first comment that comes to mind. But it's all worth it!! I'm a die hard cod & chips man. 3pc is the way to go here. The icing on the cake is the garlic infused malt vinegar!! So good!! I cover both my fish and chips in that stuff!!! So good! The tarter is also very good. Ah but I forget another of my favorite things here. The slaw!! Also quite good. The location is set just across from the iconic Juanita beach! A visit to spuds is a lovely way to spend an afternoon walking the beach enjoying the sights and sounds of people simply enjoying themselves. And don't be fooled. Spuds near the beach. I have been here several times and the food is pretty consistent each time. I decided to order uber eats from here yesterday and it really surprised me when I tasted the clam chowder. This time, it tasted different than the other times before. I got more of a potato chowder taste from it. It was thick and starchy. It was comparable to those store bought clam chowders than come in a package and you cut them open and pour into a pan to heat up. I was definitely left disappointed. I also ordered my usual, the halibut and chips. This is on the pricey side but it is halibut and not cod. This has always been cooked consistently with the same breading and same taste. I can at least count on this to come out the same each time I order it. For the "chips" (aka fries), they often come out soft and sometimes almost soggy.. I like squishy fries so I do not mind. If you only like crispy fries, I would not recommend ordering them here. This is a family friendly establishment. There are only a few parking spaces, so expect it to be busy in the summer. Eating inside or out is nice on those sunny days. You can even wander over to Juanita beach if you want to go eat over there. Spuds Fish n Chips in Juanita is an institution since 1935 and since I was 6 months old. Spuds has raised myself and generations of family's on fish n chips for almost a century on there exquisite cuisine. Like most fish and chips places you have the basics, fish, chips, clams, prawns & chowder. But Spuds has perfected the batter on there fish n chips like no other place. Add some garlic malt vinegar and OMG it's delightful. Keep in mind they mean incredible milk shakes including a Piña Colada shake. Spuds fries are my favorite golden crispy fries which are the best in West Seattle. I'd recommend ordering the fish meal or just get "THE SPECIAL" which is 3 pieces of golden fried fish, fries , tarter sauce & Coke all for one price. Went last Saturday and it was our first time going to this location. Honestly, the one on Alki was better, but this was close! We would definitely go back should we find ourselves in that neck of the woods again! We had the cod fish & chips, ( the fries were perfect!!! Pretty standard fish and chips place. I tried the calamari and chips. Service is pretty quick at the register and it can take a bit for your items to fry up depending on how many others are waiting ahead of you. Salt, vinegar and ketchup is complimentary, but if you want tartar sauce or any of their other special sauces, it is an extra cost. Ice cream machine was broken so no chocolate shake. Got my order went home sat down to eat dinner with my son. Opened up the three-piece and it was a single piece of halibut cut in three pieces. I came here just as places were reopening for dine-in, so I got to eat inside a restaurant for the first time in months. That was nice. The fish 'n' chips were fine, emphasis on chips, which were good. The cod filets were thinner, longer and wider than I'm used to. Possibly on account of the thinness, they were dried out at the edges. Otherwise the fish was fine. I echo the sentiment that it's bizarre to charge for tartar sauce at a place like this, but I know the costs are high compared with, say, Taco Bell. They forgot to give me tartar sauce initially, so I had to ask them whether I had ordered any, and they did check to see that I had. No biggie, but I guess I would have preferred to have been spotted the tartar sauce on account of the confusion. It doesn't cost them much. I wish I remembered the important things in life, but instead I remember stuff like that. The sides were *weak*. Other fish 'n' chips places I frequent had me thinking there was no such thing as bad clam chowder. The stuff here was thin and milky with a few clams in but little else. The potatoes tasted exactly like the ones from canned corned beef hash. The slaw was bland and had sat for too long. I might try another location. read more

This place should be called Scam & Chips. It used to be good and we used to prefer it to Ivars. Spuds used to have much better quality than Ivars and warranted a little higher price. We just came from Spuds Juanita and paid $68.60 for 3 people to eat and they demand a tip through a tip screen on top of it. So, $78.60 total. What we got in return was soggy and translucent undercooked fish and soggy flavorless fries. No tip was warranted as there is no service provided & the substandard product warrants nothing. Demanding tip prior to handing over food for sale is pure extortion. For $78.60, that fish should have been perfectly cooked. I am angry about being scammed out of my money. NEVER again, Spuds-- that is the last time. I hope I can warn others away, as well. read more

The great location across from Juanita Beach Park is what brought us here. We enjoyed sitting outside on the patio. We had the fish tacos and the prawns & chips. I have been coming to Spuds for more years than I care to talk about. My most recent visit was extremely disappointing. The Cod and Chips were extremely expensive for the food that we got. My daughter and I got (2) 3 piece cod and chips, (2) drinks and (2) large tartar sauces and we were at $50. The pieces of fish were good sized but the fish was very dry and the batter had a bitter flavor. The fries were good as usual but overall it was not a good experience. I can see a family of four coming here for quick lunch and laying down $100 at a fish and chips place, that would be pretty surprising. Today we tried Juanita and though the person (manager?) swore they were hand batter dipped fish I am quite positive that could not be the case since they looked and tasted like a frozen breaded piece of fish. It was ok but expensive for small portion and fries not includede. I would not recommend these. This location is small but good view of sunset and the water. Friendly staff. Caveat: I know that Americans aren't super big on old school fish and chips, so I didn't have super high expectations since I've been spoiled by all the local fish and chip shops overseas. We ordered the zucchini sticks and a double with a meal upgrade and split that between two people. The fish was okay; it was pretty tasty and flaky. Most of the fries were fine and actually pretty crispy and good, except I got a few that still had the potato skin on them that hadn't been cleaned. They tasted like dirt. (To be fair, it was just a few fries, but still...) The meal upgrade (medium drink, ketchup, tartar sauce, tiny tub of coleslaw) didn't really seem worth it for $2.99. The drink is pretty big, to be fair, but for a single meal upgrade you're paying for way more ketchup and tartar sauce than what you need, and the coleslaw is so laughably small I'm not sure what the point of it is. If you just got the single fish and chips and a meal upgrade, you're paying upwards of $9 for a pretty mediocre meal for one person. The fried zucchini sticks were pretty disappointing, since they just premade breaded zuke sticks with jar marinara sauce. They were crispy on the outside but a bit overcooked and soggy on the inside. I find charging for sauce weird. Things like malt vinegar and lemon slices are free, but tartar sauce and ketchup are. But it strikes me that more people would use things like tartar sauce and ketchup, so it seems like charging for it is just a way to irritate your customers. As far as atmosphere goes, there's not much to be had in the restaurant. I suggest getting your food to go and taking it across the street to the beach for a picnic. I guess the short version of this review is "meh". I've had better, but you're not really going to find better in this area as far as fish and chips go. read more

Grew up near Juanita Beach, and Spuds has been the iconic landmark restaraunt serving the beach for decades; in Juanita where nearly every other 'fast food' restaraunt has failed, they succeed. Breaded fish and chips is their trademark dish, I'd pass on anything else. Every table is armed with Johnnys seasoning, salt&pepper, a big napkin dispenser and not one but two different kinds of vinegar. Most people I know opt for the 'single order, extra fish' ($11 with tax and 1 sauce), which consists of two adult-hand-sized fish fillets and a fistful of french fries. The triple order is enough for two reasonable adults to share. Constant complaint of Spuds is charging for sauces/ketchup; their website cites '70 year tradition' and 'not wanting to incur costs for those who opt for the 'free vinegar and salt'. Well sorry, I sat there for 30 minutes, listening to people order, and didnt hear a soul who didnt order tartar or ketchup or both. Which brings me to my 'green rating' - everyone is ordering these sauces, and they are all served in non-biodegradable plastic tubs. Granted, I like the cardboard serving tray, paper bags for to-go orders, but really, its time to break tradition, Spuds, in favor of going green with pump-style kethup/tartar and paper sauce cups (like McD's). And quit charging, damn it. +++ on the green rating (out of 5) In the meantime, whenever I want fish/chips, I'm headed here, for the fish, the lovely Juanita Beach, the 'scenery', and will grit my teeth while paying for sauce. read more

After all the years I've been passing by Spuds and seeing folks coming in and out, I'd thought this place to be a hit. While yes a quick great spot having hopped off the boat while cruising lake WA, and just looking for a quick fix, but with Ivars now having taken place of Kid Vally near Carolon Point, things will be a challenge. I'd had the clams for $7 tonight, which were mostly gross greasy pieces of soft breading with hardly a clam inside. I'd also got the 2 piece cod and fries, to find when attempting to eat, the batter falls completely off the fish instantly. Maybe too greasy or just not prepared right, maybe just my first time, but one which definitely made me feel I don't need to come back here. Hop a ferry and check Proper Fish instead. We just moved to the area two weeks ago. A friend who grew up nearby recommended Spud's, calling it an "institution." Now, I'm not a fish eater (this could prove challenging here in the PNW) but I saw they had shrimp so we decided to go. The employee, answering my question about what the shrimp dish was like, showed me their freezer and pulled out a sandwich bag of shrimp. "This is it," he said. He wasn't joking. It was fried shrimp...that's it. And heavy on the fry. I felt pretty gross after eating all that grease! I did also order the clam chowder and that was decent. But I left feeling like I needed to eat some veggies to balance that mess out. The hubs ordered the halibut and chips and it too was over-fried. When the only thing you can taste is grease, it's a problem. Plus, it was one piece of fish, not really even a large piece at that. He also got the chowder. All of this deep-fried seafood cost almost $50! I couldn't believe they charge this much for this quality (and quantity) of food. Lunch at Spuds today... 3 piece of cod and small portion of fries for $18.95 and $10.95 for rockfish and small portion of fries, and one vanilla shake for $4.15 total over $36 with an attitude! It makes me mad. I could have fed about 20 people something better, tastier, and healthier for that money spent. On top of that, you have to pay extra for side of ketchup, tartar, etc. The fish was a bit over fried, sad... we didn't want to eat the last piece of rockfish... My tummy hurts now, the food was not fresh. I wish I read the bad reviews before going to this location. There is something wrong with their food and quality. This is my first time coming here and I have heard from various friends that the Cod Fish and Chips is the way to go here. After trying it, the batter on the fish and Zucchini was actually fairly good. It wasn't too filling which is nice, and I was able to actually "taste everything", big plus! Both the fish and zucchini fell out of the batter as soon as I bit through it. This tells me that its' good quality and was deep fried well.
