Honestly pretty heartbreaking experience I had at spuds, I'm a pretty easy to please guy and not too picky but I took my work crew there after a long day of work expecting an aesthetic fish n chip diner with decent prices but instead I see a very basic menu with very high prices. We decide to entertain spuds pricing and try some food and even asked for a recommendation from the cashier and a patron. Total rip-off. The meat of the halibut 'fillet' varied from 1/16" to 1/8" in thickness. I know because I took off the breading and measured it with a tape measure when I saw what I was given. The breading on each side was twice as thick as the fish. No pickles were harmed in the making of the tartar sauce. It's virtually all mayo, or mostly likely hydrogenated oil. The fried parmesan zucchini was mostly breading, as well. The fried green beans were salvageable, but just barely. The employees were super nice, though! It's just that I don't like to have my money stolen from whomever owns this place. You can get better fish and chips just about anywhere that serves them, and seeing how it's not exactly a healthy food, you'd be better off enjoying them from a quality establishment. read more

As someone who grew up eating Spuds on Alki Beach (best fish n chips ever) I had high expectations for the juanita location. This place shouldn't even be branded the same thing. $20 for 1 small piece of Halibut (cheeks), fries were different than Alki's, and malt vinegar didn't even malt. Good good, hella pricey. The food you get is quality and so is the service, however the fish prices are absolutely bonkers. The taste carries the entire 5 stars. While visiting the area, I ventured over to Spud Fish & Chips in the Juanita Bay area of Kirkland for a quick snack. After reading the Yelp reviews, I wanted to try this place out. The place has a takeout counter indoor seating and covered outside seating, restrooms through the kitchen area. The menu is straight forward and offers fried seafood & chips, chowder, sides Pepsi products, shakes, and root beer floats, most items under $10 before tax. I was a bit put off that they would charge extra for the sauces ($0.50 each) such as tartar, ketchup, cocktail, cajun, ranch, & others, when "all" of the other seafood places I've been to, include sauces with the food. They offer take home tartar sauce by the pint for $1.99, great for large orders. Anyways, I got myself a single order ($5.11 plus tax) which was one cod filet with small fries and a cup of tartar sauce ($0.50 plus tax). The piece of breaded fried cod with minimal grease was nice & crispy outside with very hot soft & flaky fish inside. The fries were fresh cut and good. MAJOR KUDOS to the sweet young woman at the counter when a guy coming in didn't know he needed proof of vaccination to eat indoors and got super pissed at her. She handled the interaction perfectly. I've been a HUGE fan of Spud's since the early 70's, all my childhood memories flood back to the Greenlake location, since I had 2 good buddies work there over the years. I know not all of the Spud's locations are owned by the same folks, so having visited this location, twice now, I will say, the product does carry over to this location as well as the Greenlake location....YUM!!! Yes, they charge for condiments, there is a sign, yes, there are price differences in the size of the F&C's, there is a sign, and if you happen to ask one of their counter folks, I'm sure they'll get you the details, just don't be scared to ask!! Outstanding tar-tar, I have to give it 4 outta 5 Michelle B's Tar-tar stars, in my book it'sa solid 5 outta 5! The place can get messy a bit, don't look under the tables, and you'll be fine. Only 4 Yelp stars as the counter help seems to be there just to serve you up fast and get you out the door. I have no issues with that, but some folks might find it a bit surly and brisk. Cod is salty and 75% breading. French fries look great, but taste and texture is mediocre. Clam chowder is watery with tiny bits of clams and a strange taste that is pretty awful. The prices are really high and they nickle and dime you for everything, including tartar sauce and ketchup. The had a special of rockfish that was actually 4 stars, with a thinner crunchier breading. The flavor is still great, but it's pretty clear they are trying to squeeze dollars out of customers. $60 will get you 3 tiny pieces of fish, a small fry, 8 fried mushrooms and 2 cups of chowder. Since today was the first beautiful day we've had all winter, I opted for fish and chips on the water! We sat outside at the bench style seating, and I noticed it was well kept and clean. The food was hot and delicious. A little oily, could've sat to drip for a few more minutes after coming off the fryer. But overall it was good! I used to go to the one in Alki growing up and had so many good memories so I decided to try the Kirkland one. Bad idea! The customer service is the worst I've seen they forget to give you what you order. My son took a bite of his shrimp and I saw it was raw so I gave it back to a teenage girl with red hair. She didn't say anything like sorry or I'll fix it, then I go to sit down and my husband told me she rolled her eyes when I had given it to her. The prices were astronomical: $21 for three pieces of fish that paled in comparison to years gone by. I'm done........I grew up on Spud ( Alki & Green Lake ) and while Green Lake is still in the remodeling phase and yet to open, Alki is the only true remainig Spud. The Edmonds & Juanita locations are posers. I occasionally drive through Juanita & would stop by Spud, maybe once a year. Awhile back, I started to notice subtle changes in the way the cod fillets were cut, and the seasoning was not like Green Lake, or Alki ( same with Edmonds ) and while good, it definitely was NOT the Spud that I was used to. I stopped by today for reference and ordered a two piece cod & subbed onion rings for fries and it came to $22 ! and again, the fish was thin & with almost a frozen fillet like appearance. I have heard and read this same issue from other sources. I think that Edmonds & Juanita are different franchises and I will wait for Green Lake to reopen and head to Alki for the REAL Spud............see attached photo for what real Spud fish and chips look like. Quite possibly the worst fish and chips I have had in my entire life. I ordered 3 piece cod and chips, which cost $19 plus I had to pay for tartar sauce (Ivars offers it bottomless and for free). The taste was very bland and meh. Like it was frozen and 10 days old. Thank God for tartar sauce because I had to smother the fish in it to make it marginally tasty. Fries were limp. I'm not confused by the bad reviews for Spud's, I'm confused by the number of that say the same things, such as: Price: How were you surprised by this? You failed to notice the 4 ft high, 8 feet long menu behind the cashier with the prices clearly noted? You did? Then how the &$#( did you know what to order? Serving size/all fried/etc: was it completely empty when you were there? You saw no other food being served? You thought there was a secret, hidden kitchen in the basement where Bobby Flay was chained to the wall and would be preparing everything fresh and made to order for you? Service/etc: If your review mentioned, in a negative tone, the age and/or ethnicity of anyone working here..basically, you're an idiot and a douche. Of course a 16 year old provides different service than an experienced waiter at a restaurant. THEY'RE 16. I've never had rude service of any kind here. They're young, they might fluster easier, but they're always nice and they get the order correct. Spud's has been a mainstay in this area for as long as I can remember. Just driving by it, and it's equally nostalgic to my childhood (and adulthood) neighbor Juanita Beach evoke tons of great memories. They aren't gourmet. They also really don't even pretend they are. If you made that assumption, I think the flaw lies with you. The only thing I do wish they'd change is there chowder. It has become more "starchy" and like potato soup over the years, but that's about the worst I can say. I don't venture through the whole menu, (i have no desire for deep fried artichoke hearts) I stick with what I know I will like and that will be consistently Spud's. You can easily drop a ton of money here, but, again, the prices are clearly stated and a single w/ extra fish is under $10 and will satisfy a need to consume food. Go in their with huge gluttonous eyes expecting to gorge your fat ass and you gouge your wallet, too, I assure you. Your cardiologist likely appreciates the pricing here. Everywhere charges for tartar sauce, even McDonald's for god's sake, but Spud's has tasty tartar and the "take home" for $1.99 is HUGE ..enough for the entire meal (feeding 4 people) and a ton left over. I LOVE seafood and I crave it all the time. Sometimes I want a huge pile of it dumped on a table in front of my salivating mouth, see "The Crab Pot" and sometimes I just want a quick deep fried fix. Spuds is the latter and it hits the spot every time I go! Luckily my son shares my love of seafood so when I suggested we stop there after a few hours swimming and sunning down at Denny park he was all for it. I ordered the clams with fries, it's my standard here and never disappoints. I had thought about trying the more expensive "Fancy" clams and fries, but after talking with the help, who said they were larger but didn't taste as good, I decided to stick to the original. The clam strips were perfect, nice and chewy and not too greasy. The portion of food looks a bit small when you get your order but really it's just about perfect, for me that is, I even had a few fries leftover. My son had the "Shrimp lovers" which isn't on the menu but comes with a heaping load of butterfly shrimp and some cocktail sauce for dipping. It didn't include fries, unfortunately, but I had enough to go around. We both enjoyed our food and I'm sure we will be back, I know I will. Like someone else pointed out, it seems un-american to charge you for tartar sauce and ketchup but hey if Dick's can do it I guess they can too.
