Like others, I was just driving down the road when I came upon this place. Staff was friendly, gave suggestions and moved the line along. I only had $3 in my possession and walked out of there with two delicious donuts PB and Chocolate and German Chocolate plus I was blue to leave a little tip. The issues I experienced seem to have been solved, I am very glad to say. last few trips were great. specially fun was a trip to Spunky Dunkers with my 9 year old granddaughter, where we sat at the counter and had a donut and a drink. My favorite Black Raspberry were super fresh, we got one to share, another each, granddaughter wanted another and some to bring home too. While the inside of the store is a little bit small, the atmosphere is so welcoming and charming and smells *amazing* that all your worries melt away, and all you can think about is which yummy donut (or donuts) you're going to get. The staff are so friendly and you can see them busting their a** to give you their best service - both behind the counter and in the kitchen. The donuts are soft, fluffy, deliciously sweet. Cake doughnuts are a strong point. Raised are okay. Apple fritter is heartbreaking. Instead of studding the batter with real apple chunks, they make a plain fritter and stuff it with that slimy canned apple filling. It sucks, because otherwise the fritter itself is tasty and well made. But that filling is horrid. You know who else makes their apple fritter this way? DUNKIN DONUTS! Terrible. Also, the dour teen girl who served me saw fit to place an iced doughnut face-down in the bag. So, when I took it out a few hours later, 80% of the icing was left in the bottom of the bag. Finally got to try Spunky Dunkers Donuts for the first time today!! Was so excited, because I've heard great things about this place but never got the chance to try them out before. We went shortly after noon on a Saturday, and there were a couple of people in line in front of us, but it moved fast. The store isn't that big, so you could see the selections on display behind the counter and also in the glass display up front. I like how everything was clearly labeled, so there was no confusion about what was what. The three of us went for the half dozen box, so we each got to choose two donuts. I got the Buttercrunch and the powdered Bavarian. Never seen powdered Bavarian before... I've only had chocolate-covered Bavarian cream donuts from other places, so this was a nice change. The store is open 24 hours, which probably means that some donuts are not as fresh as others, if they rotate what they are making. The Buttercrunch was a bit dry and not as fresh. But the Bavarian donut was the bomb! Fresh and soft and thick and pillowy, filled with creamy yellow cream inside--simply delish! I also tried a bite of the red velvet, and it was a bit dry, too. So if you are lucky enough to get fresh donuts, they are simply amazing. But if not, then they are a bit dry and not as great. read more

This location in Palatine is the original and fortunately is open all day, every day! (Insert happy dance) Unfortunately, that leaves me skeptical that every one of the donuts here is fresh at any given time... and my last box proved it. My sour cream, coconut, choc cream puff, and red velvet (the most disappointing!) donuts were definitely not made that day. Half the red velvet found its way into the trash, which kills me, but I'm not wasting calories on something that was made 2.5 days ago. Of the bunch, the french toast one was tip top fresh, and the Bavarian cream was up there too, so atleast we were 2/6, but last time I checked, 33% isn't a great track record... You may have better luck at the Arlington Heights location. read more

Came here and ordered a dozen donuts. Spunky Dunkers is an old school donut joint that serves some of the best donuts in the Chicagoland. IMO it has better donuts than places like Stans. Maybe not as appealing inside, but definitely has better donuts. Out of the dozen, I tried their red velvet, French cruller and not tasted fresh and extremely tasty. I was a regular customer of Spunky Dunkers until recently. I had gone in and bought 2 doughnuts and an Apple Fritter to go. When eating them no problem with the doughnuts but when eating the Apple Fritter I found a lengthy gross frizzy hair inside. I know it wasn't mine since I'm all gray. Totally grossed me out. I called store and wound up speaking to one of the managers, Mark. I screenshot the picture of the hair i found and texted it to his cell number he provided. He agreed it was gross and told me to come by during the day when he was there and he would give me a new fritter. He told me all the employees going forward will be wearing a hairnet so this doesn't happen again but when I went by there one night neither server was wearing that agreed upon hairnet. Recently I texted him to just send me a check for the cost of the fritter because I will never go into that restaurant again. I provided my mailing address but so far I have not heard via his text or phone call that he will follow through. We need better health regulations and follow through from managers at restaurants. Since it's a popular place I thought I would let all potential customers to be alert for unhealthy situations and managers who don't care about cleanliness in their stores. read more
