I love this place. Spyder Surf is one of the only legit skate shops that I have ever won an opportunity to buy Jordan Dunk's. Many other skate shops do these raffles but I almost never ever hear back from them even with years of trying and even sometimes using apps like copdate which really robs the consumer of hard earned cash to even stand a chance at winning a chance to buy shoes. So I've been looking for a new board, but hadn't done much more than researching stuff online. It was a little bit of a drive, but drove through Manhattan Beach to check out a lot of the local surf shops. Becker STINKS! This shop didn't have a ton of long boards, but got a chance to meet Dennis, the owner/shaper. He knew I wasn't going to buy a board, but spent a lot of time talking about rail shapes and other things... Yes he's probably trying to sell you a board, but he doesn't give that sleazy salesman vibe. They're going through a lot of remodeling right now. A new dry cleaner's rack that will allow them to hold a ton of wetsuits without taking too much space. Of course this means more space for surfboards to display too. They'll be having a grand-reopening 7/23-25... maybe they'll have some special deals going on? I'll be sure to check them out.... They just may be the shop to buy my next board. read more

Post edit: The owner reached out and seemed very sincere in wanting to improve customer service and explained the 7 day policy was new due to the virus- which is all understandable. They will start including the 7 day return policy on receipts. I hope they still honor returns for people who have receipts that don't have it on there, though. I changed my rating because he cared enough to want repeat customers and to improve. I wish him lots of luck. Don't buy any of their final sale clothes unless you are 100% sure you want them, you can't return them. Two things that really made the experience negative: 1. I went to return some clothes for store credit. Mind you, I had asked my daughter if the receipt said we could return the clothes I got her for store credit at any time or was there a time limit. She read the receipt and said it did not mention a time limit. We get to the store and we were told that it's a 7 day return policy, but they would go ahead and honor it, and they absolutely would not give any credit for final sales. I was upset with my daughter for missing the 7 day return policy. I was very disappointed by the final sale policy for sure. It's just a bad way to do business. When we left the store, I looked at the original receipt, and absolutely NO WHERE DID IT SAY THEIR CLOTHES MUST BE RETURNED WITHIN 7 DAYS FOR STORE CREDIT. No where. So, I got upset at my kid for something that was not even her fault. My favorite part is how they treated me as if they were doing me a favor. 2. I asked one of the sales associates to check if they had a larger size in a pair of pants, and she said, unequivocally mind you, "No." I asked her if there could possibly be a pair that someone had tried on, and she hadn't put away yet? Still, the answer was a very strong "No." I took her word for it of course. Why would I doubt her? Well, when I glanced at the rack of clothes that needed to be put back on the floor after people tried them on, of course, there was the exact pair of pants in the size I had asked her for. Spyder Surfboards I am never EVER going to give this company, "Spyder" ANY more of my business and ANY more of my valuable time EVER again! For starters, life is way to short to have to put up with this group. Some might refer to them as PTW's- the Professional Time Wasters. I'm completely done with them and so should you be. All the negative reviews about this company, the owner, and the employees are 100% positively true and very accurate! Such time wasted in an entire year period of time to communicating to the Owner, Richard. YOU do not want to give this company any of your time and your business. The owner is a complete liar, violates your trust, gaslights you (in addition to his egotistical nature, gaslighting is another narcissistic trait and he should get himself checked out with a therapist for sure), and he and his staff are incredibly unprofessional both in person and on the phone. (Read the other negative reviews). Very rude, condescending, makes you promises, and then he strings you along for a year and reneges on all of his promises when the year is nearly over. He is continuing to create a bad name for himself with our swim charity members (and other swim communities) who have bought from him in the past but are no longer doing so because of how poorly he has treated me and many others. You just don't know about all the other cases as these things most of the time go underreported. But I am coming forth because you all deserve to know the truth about this entire company and the people in it! I was in touch with this person since October 2018. November 3, 2018 is when he promised our swim charity: 3 $50 gift cards and $100 worth of raffling items such as beach chair, T-shirt,& cap) if we come back in March 2019 to pick up the gifts. As promised, I contacted him in March. He ignored our messages. March went. April then came and finally got him to pick up the phone, he reneged on his March promise and told us to 'come back in June' to pick up the merchandise . So April went, so did May. And here comes June. I contact him again in June since he said 'to reach out to him again in June'. Completely never returns our emails and phone calls. June finally passed. Not surprisingly, he still has not given us the gifts that he promised us all the way back in March! Sigh. Finally, we are in July, the month of our event as he is well aware of via all our conversations and emails, and now he refuses to take the phone and sends one of his 'employees' to tell us to come back later and it is already July 9, 2019, since we contacted him before Independence Day in July. No response. Completely blows us off and reneges on his original commitment in November is 2018 to come pick up gifts in March. Unacceptable behavior yet I'm beginning to notice this person's 'trends', so I'm not surprised with his ill-willed, unprofessional, negligent behavior. Geez you know, the decent thing from him could just have been a simple 'No' in the very beginning if he didn't want to help the charity to begin with. But stringing us along for a year, making us jump through all these hoops and wasting all are time and energy was completely unacceptable. ignoring our messages, and reneging on his promise to deliver in March is pretty bad business ethic, at the very least. No wonder why his employees are so rude because the owner himself has so many egoistic issues going on with himself! The picture about them has now become very clear in the mind now. Don't go to Spyder anymore. If you have never gone- good! Don't ever go! There are several other groups to where you can get the same, if not, better quality of water and surf wear for cheaper and the management at other places is Much much better than Spyder...a night and day experience. For starters, try Dive 'N Surf- they are highly professional and have a strong sense of urgency to deliver you top service. Becker is another one. Even Costco has better surfboards than Spyder, and at a much lower price!! Google it as there are many other options out there other than this 'Spyder place'! Wow, can't believe I FINALLY had to write about this-- but let this help the rest of you save all your precious time and energy and go somewhere else!! I came here on a friend's recommendation to get a new longboard, and I must say it was one of the most positive customer service experiences of my life! I was a little nervous, as I have had some bad experiences in surf shops (bro-y dudes with attitudes/ looks like the sun went to their heads etc), but the employees were all rad, very friendly, helpful, and FUNNY. If you want a true cali surfer experience, then come here :) Now, here is the best part: I wound up getting a nice classic 9' and a bike rack for it, but since they didn't have the right fins in, they asked if I could come in a few days to pick it up. Well, the bike rack wound up not fitting on my bike, and I don't have roof racks yet, so THEY OFFERED TO DROP THE BOARD OFF AT MY HOUSE. Yes, one of the dudes there legit put the thing in his truck, and delivered my board when I got home from work. This shows me that the owners and management really care about their customers, not just their money. Yeah, they could have waited until the right roof racks came in so I could take the thing home, but instead they selflessly offered to bring it to my house. I will definitely come back here for future surf related purchases, and it looks like they have a nice selection of clothes and accessoried too! read more

I've been a land-locked surfer most of my life. Moved to Hermosa 3 years ago and needed a local surf shop and a new board. There are several great surf shops here but I settled on Spyder. I feel I made the right choice. New surfboard last April, Rat Fink model, that worked perfectly for me in the ever changing beach breaks of the South Bay. I've been surfing a lot and the day after Christmas I broke my board in half. I didn't expect much when I contacted Spyder and explained my predicament. Dickie totally hooked me up. Went here today at lunch to pick up a new board after snapping my last one. *sniff sniff* This store is great, they have a whole back room dedicated to surf boards. Unlike the one in Santa Monica (that will remain nameless *cough* ZJ *cough*) which merely has one or two racks worth, how pathetic. This place has boards of all shapes and sizes. Rows and rows of new and used boards. As I walked into the back room there it was just waiting for me. It seemed to have an aura around it that the other boards did not. I picked it up checked out the dimensions... hmmm.... nice size 5'8"... rails look nice and thin.... bottom has good concave to it... tail has nice rocker.... "I'll take it!" The sales clerk came over and asked if I was finding everything alright, I gave him the approving nod and he said "If you're gonna pick that board up today I'll give you a nice deal on it." Perfect... He threw in a tail pad and some wax and I was good to go. Thanks Spyder you rock!!! No wonder I keep coming back to your store time and time again. read more

I was on the market for a new pair of sunglasses and had been searching high and low for them with negative results. I live within walking distance of Spyder Surf and even though we had an incident a few year ago I believe in forgiving is forgetting. That mixed with Spyder's local support of the surfing community found me giving them a call to locate these sunglasses. I called Spyder and spoke with an employee who was pleasant and extremely helpful. I asked if they carried a particular make/model/color of sunglasses in a non-polarized version. The employee told me he would take a look, he placed me on hold and returned moments later to tell me they had them. I was stoked and asked if they could place them on hold for me so that I could pick them up the following day, I was told 'no problem.' I showed up the next day and asked one of the employee's working the counter if they had a pair of sunglasses that were placed on hold the day prior. The employee returned quickly with the sunglasses and the transaction was completed. After I obtained my glasses I walked around the store a bit and see it has not changed much since my last visit. Here at Spyder you will find everything you need (i.e. clothing, surfboards, surfing gear, wax, flops, and backpacks). If you are new to the surfing community Spyder does offer rentals of boards and I believe they even offer lessons. Now that the ice has been broken with my recent visit I plan on stopping in again from time to time and check out their store. read more

Tonight I had one sales person cut me off as I was attempted to discuss a purchase with my son, well, who am I? Just the person paying. I had bought a wetsuit during the black Friday sales, 4 days later, they called me back to tell me that their provider was late and that they wouldn't receive the wetsuit until the end of January. Because of that they decided to cancel my order even though I would accept the late delivery. I could have bought a psycho in sales at another shop. Now I'm screwed! This surf shop has become more oriented towards sales of surf related clothes and accessories and less about surfboards and wetsuits. The surfboards are now hard to peruse and you need to ask for help to get to them. The house shaper, Jarvis, is well respected and got shaper of the year award in the Easy Reader (a local paper). However, the Spyder boards don't have the best resale value on craigslist compared to bigger names like Rusty or Channel Islands. Spyder surf boards are better shortboards and Becker's has better long board surf boards if you are buying local. Parking really sucks here and if the lot is full I just go somewhere else. The try to use a valet during their sales but it's too much hassle. Service here is not great. The people working there seem disinterested. Most are young and like to hang out with friends or younger customers. They might surf but they really don't know how to recommend anything surf related. read more
