Love coming here for brunch! Usually on the weekends it's packed but if you go on a weekday you don't need to wait. our waiter was very attentive, always refilling our waters and checking in on us. Tried out square cafe today after hearing some good things about it. I ordered the protein pancakes (cinnamon and vanilla). Perhaps there are better options on the menu? Nothing wrong with them, just weren't that amazing. My husband got the burger and again, just not anything special. The burger wasn't seasoned at all, just pretty plain Jane. The waffle biscuits on the other hand were pretty good, but I wouldn't come back just for those. They were super busy at 1pm on a Saturday afternoon and the service was great. Square cafe is now one of my go-to brunch places in Pittsburgh. I like that it has a couple of vegan options and you can get fresh orange juice at this cafe. On my last visit, I ordered three things - cappuccino, lemon berry ricotta pancakes and biscuits & gravy. Everything was delicious. The portion sizes are quite good for the price. The food is kind of heavy though, at least the things I ordered were. I had to take a nap once I got home. There was so much food left that I also had to take the food to go. The cafe is quite spacious and there is art hung on the walls which are up for sale. Square cafe is a nice addition to the food scene in this area. Definitely recommend this place for brunch. read more

I would give this a 10/5 stars if I could... my favorite breakfast/lunch place in Pittsburgh! The best feature of this restaurant is the staff's understanding of my sister's allergies. In our last visit here, the chef personally came out of the kitchen to talk to us about her vegan and allergy restrictions. She ended up eating the vegan scramble AND breakfast burrito! Both were delicious and we left feeling happy with the personal touch to our meal :) All of the drink options are great, and definitely recommend the pancakes! They did a fantastic job with their new space. My go to is the Brussels and grits but really can't go wrong with anything. My first visit to the new location in East Liberty, in the former location of Spoon and BRGR. Was able to find some parking a block or so over on the street. As expected, there was a wait on a Saturday morning but it wasn't too bad. Service was okay. They have a great list of cocktails, I went with the tequila sunrise which was pretty good. I had the Square Breakfast which was just okay. Bacon was very unevenly cooked and potatoes were pretty average. Prices are reasonable. They do have many other unique offerings, I'd definitely get something different next time. Would definitely recommend checking them out. read more

Great spot for streetside dining and lounging. My daughter, her friend and I shared a breakfast here recently. Daughter and I split two different bowls so we could try more flavors. The brussel sprout hash was too bitter for me and a bit overpowering to enjoy on its own; topped with bacon, caramelized onions and mushrooms over cheesy grits. This was my daughter's favorite of the two. The chorizo hash was much better (in my mind) with chorizo chunks sautéed with onions, peppers, mushrooms over a bed of crispy tater tots and topped with cheddar cheese and an over-easy egg. Rich and delicious! Coffee flowed freely with plenty of people, baby and dog watching to be had. ;-) read more

Square cafe has been one of my favorite breakfast spots for years, but I hadn't been in awhile and this visit was disappointing. The renovated bar basically sucks. I preferred the prior set up much more. There are fewer seats and you now sit right in the highest traffic area of the servers. Also, the floors were terribly disgusting. I know it gets wet outside and lots of people are walking around, but this is a restaurant and people are eating and it needs to be kept clean throughout operating hours. Also, I'm not sure if these are new floors or what but it is SO LOUD inside now. I could barely hear my server and she was right next to me. I was a solo diner and mostly felt like an imposition- to the host, to the server, to everyone. It was clear I was an afterthought and was mostly just messing up their ability to seat more people at the bar bc I was solo. The food is still delicious. I give the food a 5, but the service, renovations, cleanliness, etc. all need a lot of work. It's really a shame because this used to be a nice, friendly neighborhood spot. It didn't feel like that today. I noticed the owner wasn't there today and she usually is when I'm there so maybe that was the problem. I hope things turn around. read more

This is a very popular breakfast / lunch / brunch spot. It seems that they are challenged to supply the demand here. I would prefer to go when it's not so busy. We had to wait for a very long time on a Sunday at peak hours but that's understandable. The party I was with were having some problems with the temperature and when I brought it to the hostess' attention they were very attentive and accommodating. Even though we had to wait for food, all of the staff were making sure that we were comfortable. The coffee is exceptional. Friends enjoyed the Brussels sprout hash and peanut butter pancakes very much. Breakfast sandwich was standard. Not a fan of their vegan sausage, however my expectations may have been too high. Lot's of options for vegan / vegetarian diners. The first time I ate here back in December 2021 there were some other options that I enjoyed more but it's a rotating menu. The cocktails are very nice. Square Cafe started on Braddock Ave. Sn Regent Square. The restaurant relocated / expanded into East Liberty replacing both the BRGR and Spoon restaurants that closed. If you know the location you know that it's a very unique space both in front and in back of house. Lots of daylight. read more

I'm fresh off of childbirth so it's been 11 months since I've had alcohol and this Sliberty cold brew drink is everything I needed. I didn't get half n half because I'm lactose intolerant but even if I could tolerate dairy, I wouldn't need it! It's perfect! Also the dough poppers with Nutella are what dream are made of. From both the outside and the inside this place looks like you're in an airport. For being so ugly-corporate, the food is pretty surprising. They try to sell you on the hash, and they're not wrong; it's tasty. Polenta and brussels sprouts are not what I thought I wanted for breakfast, but they work well. The other fare is standard and is maybe a standard deviation above the Pittsburgh norm price-wise, but prices make sense for the neighborhood. I'm not a sweet breakfast person, but the rest of my party recommended their sweet options. The drip coffee is also solid and I dig the ceramic mugs they use, although they are entirely too big. While searching for vegan places that had breakfast options we decided to give it a shot. Wow is all I can say! Their menu has numerous vegan, gluten and other special dietary options clearly labeled on the menu which is easy to read. This honestly makes someone like me, a nursing mom with a son who has a dairy and nut allergy, feel as if I am included when eating out and it is very calming. I loved eating here!! It reminded me of Snooze, a brunch restaurant chain that I also love. I ordered the smoked salmon scramble for my own entree and tried the brussels sprouts hash and lemon ricotta pancakes that my friends ordered (those were my second and third choices on the menu - would highly recommend all of them). They got everything right with the scramble - good-quality salmon, fluffy eggs, and a great kick from the capers. I asked for the creme fraiche on the side so it wouldn't be overly creamy. Our waitress said the brussels sprouts hash was her favorite thing on the menu, and I understand why - the brussels sprouts are seasoned so well, and the whole bowl feels indulgent even though it's mostly vegetables and eggs. The lemon ricotta pancakes were also super good - I love a blueberry-lemon combination, and these pancakes had the perfect amount of sweetness. Great breakfast spot! They have a ton of space, but it fills up! You can make an early morning reservation up until 9am. That's what we did, and by the time we left the place was packed! What was also nice about going early was that I was easily able to find street parking out front. I ordered the Brussels sprouts bowl and a cup of coffee. Fun menu here! They have everything from a bowl of granola to chicken pesto wraps to Brussels sprouts to omelette. Pretty much anything you might want for brunch or lunch you can find here, and at a very reasonable price. The cafe is located in the Regent Square neighborhood right next to Frick Park. Their menu is also very vegetarian friendly. My Mom got the chickpea and beat burger which was delicious and had a fun purple beet color. I got The Brussels sprouts bowl which was very flavorful and had an egg on top. Someone else got the granola and Greek yogurt bowl which was great for a light bunch. All in all this is a fun cafe that will leave you satisfied and feeling pretty healthy about what you are! Quick and friendly service in my opinion as well. read more

Hallelujah there's gluten free pancakes that actually taste amazing! Legit like a regular gluten pancake... But without gluten! I have always loved Square Cafe, prior to a gluten free lifestyle, but now there's even more to love because of these delicious pancakes! They have a handful of gluten free options if you're not into pancakes (although i don't know why you wouldn't be!). But you can choose from a variety of dishes that are clearly marked. I called at 8:15am when their website was not, and was told the complete opposite and received no actual help. People need to be able to depend on consistency with this stuff, and to trust that the person answering a business's phone is giving accurate information. Really cool cafe with a lot to offer. They have tons of different drinks, sweet items, and savory items. I had their breakfast burrito and their Nutella crepe. The burrito was good and had a nice mix of grilled veggies and egg. It wasn't seasoned much but still tasty. The Nutella crepe was good, but the texture of the crepe was a little different than I'm used to. Overall the staff was kind, but we did end up waiting more than twice as long as they had told us. Very understandable that there are long wait times given staffing shortages, but it would help to factor this into the wait times they tell you before getting put on the list. read more

Since it's so busy, it definitely feels very crowded and people are rushing around and squeezing by each other just to get around. So if you are looking for a more chill place where you can sit for longer and relax, maybe this isn't the place. I am typically more of a sweet breakfast person (although I usually like a combination of both) so I ordered the lemon berry ricotta cakes ($11, 3 pancakes). There was a very unique and subtle hint of lemon that really complimented the sweetness of the pancake, which was nice and moist. A light drizzle of syrup and I was digging in. Though the first pancake was amazing, I do have to say that eating three of them definitely grows on you. I was also eyeing the square breakfast which has 2 eggs, a breakfast meat, and pancake since it gives a lot of variety which is what I like best. The only reason I didn't get it was I wanted to order something more unique considering I waited for so long, but it looked great from what I saw when other people ordered it. My friends all got savory options such as the ranchero omlette which they didn't seem to think was anything special... The lemon ricotta blueberry pancakes were some of the best pancakes I've ever had and my boyfriend thoroughly enjoyed his chorizo eggs benedict. I love that the menu changes from season to season. The atmosphere was awesome, but the tree above had small leaves falling all over the place and into our food. But the food was great and I highly recommend going here! I recently switched to a vegan lifestyle for health reasons. I travel a ton for work and the last couple of days was the first time I wasn't able to pack my own food to be sure there was something for me to eat at meetings. This cafe came up as a great vegan option and it more than exceeded my expectations. Firstly, the staff was very welcoming when I walked in, which was nice so early in the morning. Secondly, the service was timely and friendly. Lastly, the food was amazing! I ordered the Very Vegan Burrito and the flavor was incredible. Mixed feeling about Square Cafe. It has so much going for it but I feel they compromise themselves a bit. I have visited this cafe many times and I think I have a good sense of the place. The good. I think their menu is attractive and has variety. Just about everything I have had has looked good and tasted. I have had their hashes and they quite delightful (in particular the chicken sausage hash although I like the veggie one too). Their little potatoes were quite nicely done (although once I thought they should have been cooked just a tad more). The space itself is attractive and they have both bar and table seating. I think they seemed to have some sort of a back patio too. I'm a morning person and have never had a wait in the early morning. The not so good. I think they lack friendliness, and not just one person. It's a cold experience interacting with their staff each time. The menu is filled with repeated warnings of no customization (online menu says that with every dish listing!). They'll serve coffee in a Huge mug, which seems to be so that they don't have to do refills. Too bad if your huge mug goes cold. And if you do finish that mug, it's quite an endeavor getting attention from anybody for a refill. Service is not attentive in the least bit. If you ask for hot sauce, they give you the small packets of cholula. No bottle, no variety. Who knows, maybe it's a pandemic thing. There's also a mysterious service charge that appeared with no warning. This does seem like a longer list of "not good", and the point is that those little things stick, and that's why Square Cafe seems to be compromising it's outstanding food menu. I will go back only because I kind of like the food. But if I find a half decent place with friendlier staff and no admonishments in the menu, I'm going to go there more. read more

The tops in Regent Square. Awesome to discover a breakfast place in Pgh that can compete with Pamela's (and that takes credit cards, albeit with a service charge, unlike Pamela's cash-only policy). Service was friendly and speedy and the food was good. Their pancakes and French toast are positively delicious. Marnie and Sophie loved the spinach-mango smoothie, too. My scrambled eggs were perfectly prepared. The breakfast sausage was a bit blasé, but clearly not of the greasy unhealthy sort. read more
