Cheers to Pamela's on Walnut! Such a nice spot to eat breakfast before shopping around the area. It's a Pittsburgh institution for a reason. I got to try their breakfast sandwich with scrambled eggs and feta cheese, as well as the strawberry hot cakes and tea. Everything was excellent. The vibe was very classic American diner-y. The hot cakes were the best I've had probably in my life, and I genuinely thought I'd never like pancakes. Super crispy on the edges, soft on the inside, filled with real fresh berries and loads of cream. Amazing portion as well. Incredible prices. The sandwich is also super good, although a little more basic. Loved they had feta as an option! Good size, good price, well made with numerous ways to customize. And the tea was good too. I don't get this iconic breakfast places that everyone oohs and awes over. It's breakfast? How good can eggs be? But people love this place for some reason. Luckily, we dined on a weekday so it was nutso bad. I'm just as happy with breakfast at Denny's than these types of places. I ordered the Pittsburgh Salad which is one of my favorite things. Fries + Salad + Ranch = that feeling like you're eating healthy! It's more about the mind, right? I "Feel" healthy, therefore I am. And Ranch is basically milk, so it's kinda breakfast-y. The salad was great and the best one of the 3 I had on my trip to Pittsburgh. Service wasn't the best here by any means. I asked for a soda pop and it took a few reminders to the waitress to get it. Same with extra ranch dressing for the salad. The restrooms were upstairs in the back of a different restaurant. For the past 10 years, my husband has been telling me about Pamela's, so when we came to town for his college reunion, we went, and I have to say - it lived up to the hype! We ordered the blueberry hotcakes and the broccoli and cheddar omelet + Lyonnaise potatoes to share. Our friend ordered the chocolate chip banana hotcakes too, which he let me sample too! Although I'm more of a chocolate + banana's kind of person, I have to say I would probably order the blueberries next time because they are refreshing and so good in the hotcakes. I had never had hotcakes like these rolled up like crepes, which made it easy and convenient to eat. He told me Pamela's is known for the potatoes, which were indeed delicious. Even the toast that came with the omelet dish was delicious! The omelet was pretty standard, but I would order it again just to balance out the sweet dessert-y breakfast and one with more protein. One of my favorite food places in Shadyside. Almost like a must go for me during weekend brunch. My favorite and go-to are their home fries- crispy and well seasoned. But otherwise their menu is pretty typical of a diner menu, eggs, bacon, toast, etc. their hot cakes are good as well, crunchy edges with the sweet syrup. Spacious seating, but I would be wary of how busy it gets in the morning. Friendly staff and quick service times. I would definitely recommend coming here. read more

The prices are pleasantly surprising--I ordered the morning after breakfast--eggs, choice of meat, and 2 hotcakes for $12. I chose scrambled eggs and turkey sausage. I thought the eggs tasted like basically nothing and I had to add a ton of hot sauce. The meat was what you'd expect. However, the signature original hot cakes were out of this world. We arrived around 9:30a and were able to sit immediately. A line started to accumulate around 10a so if you don't want to wait - plan to arrive before the rush! We ordered several omelette with their classic Lyonnaise potatoes and toast, and the banana walnut pancakes. The portions are always large - if you're a light eater I recommend sharing! The omelettes are wrapped around a generous amount of filling. The potatoes are my favorite breakfast potatoes in the world - perfectly soft, crispy, and buttery. The pancakes are a thin crepe style and I think they're better stuffed with filling than simply on their own. Service was quick and friendly. Every time I come to Pamela's, I think to myself, "Will I ever get anything other than 'The Morning After Special'?" And the answer is no. No I will not. The Morning After Special comes with hotcakes (a Pamela's signature), eggs, and your choice of meat. I usually sub in specialty hotcakes-- my hotcakes of choice are the banana chocolate. I believe all of that is somewhere around $13. It truly cannot be beat. I can't speak on any of their other menu items because TMAS is all I've gotten and it's all I will ever need. The hotcakes are a cross between pancakes and crepes. They're super fluffy with a crispy circumference. It feels like something you just have to try at least once if you come to Pittsburgh. That said, I wish they would melt their chocolate in their hotcakes. This seems like such a trivial thing, but when you're chomping down on your sweet hotcakes, do you really want to feel the crunch of those mini chocolate chips? It's not the vibe. It's such a simple thing but I think it would really elevate their dish. Second, I don't know if it's because of COVID, but they served the food on these paper plates which made me feel like I was eating hot dogs in elementary school. It's a diner. I know. But I feel like going out to eat and being given paper plates kinda kicks your excitement down a notch. Some tips if you come here: If you have a big party, come early! We came around 10am and only had to wait around 10min with a party of 5. I've been to a couple other Pamela's locations and all of them tend to have a wait once you move toward popular times, so definitely plan accordingly.
