Come to Square Cafe for great food and a nice ambiance. I had the Brussels sprout hash, and it was so filling and delicious. Can't say normal orders like pancakes and such are out of this world, but I also only tried bits of it, so I could be wrong. Finally had a day off where I was able to order from here especially since every time I drive by on the weekend it's a packed house with dozens of people waiting outside. I honestly had high hopes. I ordered food to go. I love Brussels sprouts so decided to get the Brussels sprouts hash. I will say I was highly disappointed. It was very bland considering it's sautéed with bacon, onions and mushrooms topped over grits. With those ingredients you can't lose. The combination itself screams flavor. However flavor was definitely missing. I'm willing to try this spot again but maybe dine in. I do know takeout is not always as good as if you dined in. So I will be back, maybe try something different and I will update my review again. Hopefully get to 5 stars. read more

Looking at the menu, you will find items you never thought would go together but you should try them as you will be surprised.  They are vegetarian and vegan friendly and you can even sit outside and bring your canine friend. I wish I had one of these places closer to me and didn't have to wait for my visits to my daughter for a treat here and it is a treat with some of the best french toast on the planet! I ordered their special crepes, with brie cheese and strawberry. I think the pictures are pretty self-explanatory: the strawberry was NOT fresh. In fact, one piece of the the strawberry even had a HUGE black spot; totally ruined my appetite. Also, the crepes itself was way undercooked, and when the food came to table it was COLD and the cheese was in huge chunks and not melt at all. I'm no crepes expert, so maybe this cold crepes with chunky cheese inside is some sort of authentic style? Nonetheless, the moldy strawberry is totally unacceptable. I LOVE brunch, and I love when I have brunch options for lunch... especially during the week. This place is like a better, local version of First Watch... definitely less basic. The Tot Mess Bowl was delicious. The only thing I didn't love was the super small water glass they give you-- it's like 6 oz of water, maybe less with ice in it. So you either have to come hydrated or keep asking for refills constantly. Sounds petty, but it was a little annoying. Otherwise, I'd highly recommend checking this place out! read more

Square Cafe is one of my new favorite brunch spots in Pittsburgh! Our group of 3 were able to get a table within 20-30 minutes despite how packed it was in the restaurant. The restaurant is much bigger than it looks and has additional seating in the back. You can also grab coffee from the bar area in the front while you wait for your table as well. I got the iced last unicorn latte to drink, which has lavender, vanilla and white chocolate flavors. The flavors complemented each other really well so I really loved this latte. I also got the southwestern veggie omelet and split an order of the lemon berry ricotta pancakes with my friends. The omelet and pancakes were both delicious, and I especially loved the lemon pancakes. What's really nice too is that you can order a single pancake off the menu if you want to try more than one dish. The food and drinks came out pretty fast despite how busy the restaurant was. Love this place! Love all the options they have! I'm not a vegetarian, but I really appreciate the many vegetarian options offered at the Square Cafe. We stopped in on a summer afternoon and if the weather is nice, I highly recommend sitting outside. Oddly, I almost felt like I wasn't in Pittsburgh anymore. We kept it simple. This place is awesome and I have now been 4 times including to take advantage today of their birthday discount of $10. I have always gone alone and I sit at the bar, so getting in is very fast. The order usually takes 15 minutes so they are fine with you reading there. I am a big pancake/waffle affcionado and they have the best pancakes in this part of the city, bar none. Their lemon ricotta blueberry pancakes are to die for and I have also tried their caramel/pecan/chocolate chip ones. Today they were offering a mixed berry pancake but I decided to go savory. It was good but I know in my heart I will stick to the sweet going forward. All the folks at the bar are so super friendly and customer service oriented and they don't ever rush you. They made me a caramel latte today and it was utterly delicious. Can't recommend this place enough! There is usually a line around the building and now I understand why! Btw, if you are an early bird you can make a reservation if you do it for between 7 and 9 a.m.! I won't be competing for that space but go for it! read more

The veggie crepe was very fresh and flavorful. I was a little confused, as it said it came with three crepes, but there was only one. I was definitely full after one. My friend's French toast, though appropriately custardy, didn't seem to be made with actual brioche bread which made it a little soggy. We shared a blueberry ricotta pancake which was delightful. We came here on a weekday morning expecting it to be relatively slow. But be warned- it filled up very quickly! Very cute cafe on the corner of a busier intersection. Easy to find and very spaced out inside. The food was very reasonably priced and they had a very decent sized lunch and breakfast menu. As it was raining when we went, we did not get an opportunity to see the outdoor dining, but the indoor area was nice. I ordered their traditional breakfast with eggs, home fries, bacon and toast all for only like $10! Coffee came in a huge ceramic mug (so cute!) with refills. Why throw all your balls in the "sweet" or "savory" courts when you can have both, right? Also, take note of their creative cappuccino menu with reasonable prices. One more thing, they allow you to order pancakes in single orders (big fan of restaurants that do this). I've been here multiple times but this will be my last time. Everything was going fine until I started eating the salad that came with my s'liberty omelette. I was rustling the leaves after having eaten a few already and a MASSIVE bug (probably a moth, it had fur and wings and one too many legs) crawled out. I audibly gasped which called the attention of a server and before I could take a picture or even say anything else she grabbed the plate from my table and ran. She called over the manager to come see us and beside the fact that a bug the size of a large gum-ball crawled out of my food, everyone was trying to be as accommodating as possible. It's disappointing because even after they replaced our food, my friend found a hair in her yogurt. At that point, we really didn't want to make a fuss about the food so we left it. Update June 2018: Today I had a veggie bowl that I just loved! First, the egg on top was done perfectly - crispy, translucent whites and runny yellow. I thought the only way to get eggs like that was if I cooked them myself! This bowl had quinoa as the base and was filled with grilled veggies including zucchini, mushrooms, peppers, broccoli and cauliflower. I can't wait to replicate this at home. It was so delicious! I had the special Brussels sprout has, grits, and one egg overt easy. Delicious! Perfect! Our server was friendly and efficient. He kept our coffee filled and checked back after our food arrived to see if we needed anything. The check was delivered promptly. Another friend had the lemon ricotta pancakes and noted how light, airy and delicious they were. Another friend the shorty rib crepe which she seemed to enjoy. After our recent visit for a Sunday brunch, we decided this was our last time. Thanks to their increased capacity, we waited for more than 45 minutes for our brunch order. The Chicken Mushroom Crepes had overcooked cheese to a point that oil was separated out of it. Lemon-Berry Ricotta Pancake-which this place is famous for-was missing flavors. The menu is overpriced. Don't fall for the specials, they're even pricier and fail to pack any punch. read more

The place seemed to be decently occupied with Regent Square locals and the waitress was pretty friendly, checking up on us multiple times throughout the meal. The interior decoration is a bit quirky. There's a diner vibe with the tables, chairs, and bar counter, but the whole place is pretty colorful. From the bowls to the spots of color all over the place, color was indeed all over the place. I appreciated the local art hanging from the walls. I decided to order the protein breakfast ($10) with scrambled eggs, bacon and their protein cinnamon pancake. My boyfriend tried their sweety white omelet ($11) which came with a side of fruit as well. We also ordered a side of sweet potato fries ($5) and OJ ($2.50). When the food arrived, we were ready to dig in. The OJ was maybe a little more than a cup in volume? and it was priced at $2.50, and another $2.50 for a refill! Definitely not worth it. The fries were super thin and unsatisfying, small portion size as well. The omelet, pancake, and eggs were okay. Nothing too outstanding about them. My boyfriend seemed to appreciate their thicker cut bacon. Overall, for the price that we paid, I expected better. Either better quality or greater quantity.
