great local seafood wholesaler! Living in Fitchburg my entire life, I have been blind to many local offerings that my quaint town provides. It was only a couple of years ago that a coworker of mine was raving about this place and couldn't believe I had never gone. The parking spots in front of the building fill up very quickly. However, if you drive towards the back where the trucks pull in, you can actually drive up the slope for several more spots. I believe there's another adjacent bunch of spots to park on the ground level, but I'm not confident. As soon as you step inside, there are 2 lines you can wait in. Towards the left you can order food from their kitchen and enjoy the typical assortment of fried seafoods that you've probably already familiar with from many other joints. In fact, this place has a sister location called Kay's Dairy Bar in Westminster. Towards the right, you stand in line for the wholesale products. Today I came in the some big ol lobsters. The staff here are all super friendly, as well as all of the customers. I had pleasant conversations with everyone. I was able to get my three 4-pound behemoths steamed here, and you can eat ask for a cup of drawn butter from the restaurant side. Since I was feeling hungry, I grabbed a plate of fried scallops too. Lobsters - I follow their FB page and I was drawn in by a couple of the posts showcasing some behemoths. I was slightly disappointed that they maxed out at about 4-pounds on the day I showed up, but everyone in line said that it was better that way anyway. My lobsters took about 30min to steam and when I got home and cracked them open, the meat was perfection. Fried Scallops - I love love love scallops. This place does it just as well as Kimball's and I think I'm just going to come here from now on to support a local business instead. read more

Then some guy comes out to stock the freezer and was rude from the beginning.... never said excuse me nothing. After another minute waiting, I said to this guy excuse me do you work here assuming he did. This guy didn't even acknowledge me so I said again. Excuse me. Where can I pay for these items? Again, rudely said it any of the guys can take you. I look around and there's no one? So I said business must be good. At this point, he tells me if I don't like it go somewhere else. Well, let me tell you something if I wasn't pressed for time things would've been much different. Thanks to the ladies in line keeping me cool. Our family order the twin steamed lobsters, fried haddock plate, and fried whole belly clams. The clams were super clean and sweet. The fried fish was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The lobsters cooked to perfection. We went on a busy Friday night but placed our orders and had a seat pretty quickly. The surprise for us was the three bean salad. An interesting side dish in addition to the typical fries and coleslaw. It was fresh and filled with herbs. Wonderful! I never thought I'd have to write a review like this, but I feel responsible to share what happened so others can stay safe and aware. Recently, I ordered 10 lobsters -- six that I ate there, and four extra that I bought from the market to take home. While eating, I noticed immediately that the lobster tasted off. It was watery, the texture felt wrong, and the flavor wasn't what it usually is. I even mentioned that to them. Not long after, I became extremely sick -- sick enough to end up in the ER. I didn't go in person, but I called the restaurant to let them know what happened. Not to argue, not to demand anything... just to inform them. As someone who has supported this business consistently, I expected at least a little concern. Instead, I was put on hold, picked up, and told they didn't have time for me. And even worse -- I could hear someone in the background say: "Oh, it's that girl... yeah, don't talk to her. Ignore her."... I ONLY CALLED X2 (CALLED BACK BECAUSE THEY TOLD ME TO FIND THE DATE THEN CALL BACK).. I had just spoken to the guy 15 minutes prior to call back and get told he was never there.... I never got to speak to him again) ... DEREK IS HIS NAME. Honestly hearing that broke my heart. After years of loyalty, thousands spent, and supporting them consistently, that's how they spoke about me. No care, no respect, no acknowledgment that I had gotten seriously sick AND ALMOST DIED!!!! Look forward to coming here every year as I grew up in Fitchburg and now live in Oregon. I have to say the cashier was extremely rude and inattentive. While trying to place my order, she was looking around not making eye contact and then had to make me repeat my order two or three times. They have a sign on the counter that says the beer special was $2.50 when my husband ordered the beer while we were waiting for our order, they told him it was a dollar more even when he pointed at the sign on the counter showing $2.50 he told my husband that he was just going off the price on the cash register. Wow! I was so impressed with this place that I went nearly every day while I was in town! It's a bit of a hole-in-the-wall, but clean and comfortable- and the Lobster is incredible! You order at the window, find a table, and then they bring it to you, with a smile! While you wait, you can enjoy the cacophony of the kitchen staff working their butts off! They are loud, but you can tell they really enjoy what they do- making people happy making great food! I had lobster every time, I also had the clam chowder, which is delish. The batter had great flavor and adhered well to the fish. It was maybe a tad on the greasy side but nothing crazy. The fried scallops were a little disappointing. They were still delicious/cooked well, but a lot still had the muscles attached and a few were sandy. I'm not sure if this was a one-off, but was surprising considering how great the haddock was. The fries were average/good. I wasn't a fan of the coleslaw (I thought it tasted like vanilla?) but that might just be my personal taste. It was freshly made and perfect consistency. Food - good. Best cole slaw! Except, why all the fried fish looked overcooked escapes me...very dark fish. Clams and scallops were not as dark (old oil?). Service - oh boy. Where do I begin? First of all, it was post lunch so wasn't a lot of people. Customers jaded to ask for their tables to be wiped down. Staff member came out of kitchen with a wet cloth and wiped down a table...then several others - no spray cleaner, no bucket of cleaning wash...same cloth wiping down multiple tables without a rinse. Ick. And as for the spilled tartar sauce / liquids by the trash container, every one of the staff walked past it. Perhaps it would clean itself? Staff - pretty much more interested in chatting with themselves than actually serving their customers first. Outside seating area is a nice option but only of you are able-bodies. The poor woman with a walker struggled badly to get into it. And don't even think about a wheelchair. Especially if you can't get up to Maine yet. You order at the counter when you walk in and they have 7 or 8 booths and several tables for dining in. I didn't see any outdoor tables so they do pack orders to go regularly. The prices are very reasonable. I'll take pictures next time. Also, if there is a line it can take a while to get the meal. Steamers dead and crushed! Shame on you, SS Lobster! My family has been traveling an hour each way for decades because we love eating in and buying fresh to take home but this experience has left a really bad taste in our mouths! On the afternoon of February 28th, 2020 we stopped for lunch after picking up a family member from Logan. We enjoyed another nice dinner and before leaving, my mom decided that she would get a half bushel of steamers to share with the rest of the family to celebrate my brothers birthday. After driving our hour long drive home, we decided to move the steamers to a cooler for the night. We were shocked when we opened the crate they were in. A significant percentage of the clams were crushed badly and dead! 10% as a matter of fact. 1 out of every 10 clams were useless. The person who served us took what seemed like 10 minutes to acquire the box from the back. We even joked with other customers, claiming that they were actually digging the clams as we waited. I say this because there must have been some kind of discussion between the staff as to whether the clams were salable or not. I am complaining on behalf of my 80 year old mom who was taken advantage of. When placing her order, the first words out of my mom's mouth was to ask how the clams were looking. Nothing was said to reflect this horrible condition and that's why we all feel she was ripped off by deception. After inspecting and photographing the clams, my mom called SS lobster but no one answered so she left a message explaining the situation. No one called back to address the problem we had, therefore I decided to share this lousy experience here. VERY DISSATISFIED AND DISAPPOINTED! read more

Love/hate Just remember very small kitchen but large seating area it took over an hour to receive food. And there were five of us so we had a pretty large order. They gave us our drinks which thankfully they did cause it gave the kids something to do with the time we had. When we finally got our meals kids were thirstmost some was warm But what was not had to be sent back to the kitchen to be returned cold again. My family LOVES this place. It's nothing fancy, you order at a counter and seat yourself. We usually order fried haddock plates or clam chowder. The other night I ventured out and tried the maple mustard artic char. FANTASTIC. Instead of fries I had it served over rice. It was truly phenomenal. The people working here are always very friendly. Bonus for the cooks out there is that they have a fish market also. Most of the time the fish market prices are WELL below what they are at the grocery store. I ordered little neck clams here for a party I was having. They were very fresh and barely and sand in them. If you're looking for a fancy date night, this obviously isn't the place to go. It's more for a causal outing. And be prepared to WAIT.
