This is the 2nd time I've come here. I was really impressed the first time, but this time was a mess. Positives: ~ I was by myself so I was seated quickly. ~ The waitstaff were nice Negatives: ~ I ordered the 'Red Chili Shrimp' as an appetizer. For $25 the shrimp tasted vaguely like Lysol and the 'Red Chili' was pretty weak ~ I had gone there for steak, but they only had a skirt (over-priced carne asada for tacos) or a $180 tomahawk. ~ Disappointed, I went instead for the lamb. When it came, roughly 35% of it was meat and the rest was bone/gristle/tendon. ~ I ordered the mashed potatoes as a side and asked if there were any alliums besides garlic that were in them. They said no and when it came it was full of scallions. ~ For 1x beer, 1x glass of wine, 1x side, the lamb, and tip the bill came to roughly $200. I had heard many good things about this place and had come here on a date night and was extremely disappointed. While the steak was good, for the price point, it was mediocre. We had ordered the countneck clams and for $17, you get 6 clams which is just insane. The iceberg & blue salad was tiny for the same price point and you had to cut it up yourself. My sister and I went here for Valentine's Day dinner. We put our names down at 5:15 and were quoted a 3 hour wait, which ended up being accurate. Overall, we wouldn't return to this restaurant. We ordered the octopus and the eggplant three ways to start. The octopus was soaked in garlic and was pretty bad. The eggplant was good! We both got the butchers steak for dinner, and it was good but not worth the 40 min + wait we waited for it. Service was slow the entire time so we didn't stay for dessert. One of my favorite steakhouses! We got the 65 ounce ax handle split amongst three people and it was perfect. We had enough left over for another person. So really, the 65 ounce can feed about 4 people. They also had amazing seafood. We got the grilled clams with lemon garlic butter and scallops for appetizers. Then we got grilled peppers, mash potatoes and cauliflower for sides. I think I could have done with the cauliflower, but the mash potatoes sealed the deal. There is a wait, which is first come first serve. Worth the wait. There's a bar next door (connected to St Anselm through the backyard) that you can wait at. Also with hipster vibes. Cons: I did take one star away because the waitress wasn't very attentive. The apps took a while to come. Then we sat there for a good 30-40 minutes later our ax handle and sides came out. Couple of friends recommended this place and we were so glad they did! They swore on this restaurant and pretty much bring all our friends here when they come to visit them in NYC. Like other NY places, it's small! Only 1 big table and a few tables that fit 4 then there's the bar. Therefore the place can get packed fast so coming at opening or before to guarantee seating is recommended. Ordered the hanger steak, scallops, fried potatoes, and creamed spinach. O. M. G. The flavors were just right! There's many steak options. Usually I go big and do a ribeye or something. But my friends swore on the hanger steak so I had to try it and was NOT disappointed! I don't know how they marinate that meat but I'd say it was one of the best tasting steaks I've had. And support soft and easy to eat too. ANDDDD IT WAS CHEAP! I will never judge a steak by its price again. The creamed spinach was perfect and the potatoes were so good and filling as well. Waiter kept on top of the refills and we were out in 45 mins! The BEST steak restaurant in New York by a mile! I'm almost reluctant to even write a review so I can keep this place a secret. I have been here 5+ times and these are my tried-and-true hits. The bacon (it's amazing although I have to admit the only thing Peter Luger does better is the bacon). The butchers steak - it's so tender and delicious and reasonably priced (perfect for 2 people + sides, slightly too big for 1 person alone). The ax handle if you're in a big group - normally these don't come smaller than 40-50oz. The pan fried mashed potatoes - I would eat these everyday if I could. Some of the appetizers (grilled clams, burrata) are good too but you come here for the steak + sides. If you get here right before it opens, you can normally sit down right away. 15 minutes later and you're looking at a 2 hour wait. Come later than 6PM and good luck eating before 10PM. Forget Peter Luger - St Anselm is where you want to go to impress out of towners or have a wonderfully indulgent dinner! read more

It's unfortunately a rotating special that apparently comes around only about once a month or so but we've been able to catch it twice! It's essentially a huge salmon head and tail grilled to perfection with super tender meat and all the deliciousness of the fish cheeks etc. definitely a fish to pick apart with your hands Lamp chop (4.5 stars): super fatty, default grilled to medium rare, served with a salsa verde that is absolutely delicious Ax handle ribeye (4.5 stars): we came here with 2 other friends once and shared this, and it was perfectly grilled, tender, fatty. Pricey, but I'm glad we tried this once Grilled fennel (5 stars): with hazelnuts and salsa verde. Caramelized and tender, nutty and fresh. Service is much calmer during brunch. We had no problem walking in around 11:30am on a Sunday for brunch, and there were still seats available when we left. Definitely the way to go if you don't want to wait 2-3 hours for dinner for the same menu. No outdoor seating. One day, we will restrain ourselves and not be too full for dessert! read more

I was looking for an intimate place for dinner while my parents were in town and came to St. Anselm's based on a friends recommendation - so happy I brought them here because we all loved it! Service: Our waiter was great and recommended a bottle of red for the table. We were drinking it slowly since we had drinks before and he asked twice to ensure we actually liked it - it was nice to see he was genuinely wanted to make sure we enjoyed his recommendation. Food: We ordered the eggplant three ways for an app which was great but a small dish. For dinner we ordered three types of steaks: The hanger (surprisingly all of our favorite), the NY strip, and the sirloin that actually has grated horseradish on top which we've never seen before. All cooked to perfection! For sides, we went with the mashed potatoes and grilled peppers which were good but we probably should have ordered one more side for 4 people. Dessert was spot on too! If you have a sweet tooth, try the Rum Sticky Coffee Cake a la mode. Overall, this is a place seems like an undiscovered secret. Had a really disappointing experience here. We got the ribeye for three- it was a 45oz cut, but a lot of that bone, and it alone was $156. Lesson learned- just stick with the butcher steak. After waiting over two hours for a table, and then another almost hour for the steak to arrive severely undercooked (and not sliced)... and then more time for it to be cooked closer to medium rare... just isn't the kind of place I want to spend my time at. The steak was very good when it eventually arrived, but by that point we were kind of hate-eating it. The fried mash potatoes are still great (though still over-salted, and expensive for the portion size), the cauliflower side was not, and the grilled Halloumi app was comically skimpy- two small slices served on a large bed of greens. They were kind enough to comp us one of our bottles of wine for the trouble/delay with the steak. Still though, it's not someplace I'd return, after having had very good meals there in the past. I've been here twice now because I'd heard good things. Never again. Went once with friends and everyone's steak was super under. Okaaaay. Maybe an off day, but for as many steaks as they surely make, unacceptable. Tried again and instead of 'we don't have coke' (it was one of the hottest days of the year) they serve horrible soda that tasted like beets and dirt. At first I thought it was too bland to taste bad, but no, the aftertaste pulled it off. Potatoes tasted like they'd been cooked in a pan with something burned, and the steak was (again) so nauseatingly underdone that I couldn't eat it. Guys, their Axe Handle Rib Eye is no joke! We got ours medium rare to share, and it was melt in your mouth good. So good, I almost wanted the entire 41oz to myself! We also ordered their weekly special steak tartare, which had a nice hint of horseradish with every bite, cauliflower and shishito peppers as our sides. Their balsami and tamari cauliflower had a nice acidity to it that wasn't overpowering, and it helped cut the fattiness from the steak. I thought it was a nice break from all the meat consumed. The shishito peppers were good, but not worth the $10, and I would probably skip this and try a different side next time. I enjoyed my entire meal from start to finish, and service was great. I would recommend making reservations prior to dining here, because I heard the wait could go up to 2 hours, but not sure what the post covid wait time looks like. I love this place and can't wait to go back. Like many other reviewers will note, there is always a long wait and they don't take reservations. Thankfully, there is a bar next door where you can grab and a glass of wine and relax. At our dinner, we were lucky enough to be seated by the kitchen where we watched different cuts of meat being cooked. What I ordered: the butcher's steak which was one of the best pieces of meat I have ever had in my life (a must-try), the green beans, and for dessert, the Toffee cake which I have been dreaming of ever since. We went for a 10th anniversary dinner and were greatly disappointed. This was a very unfortunate experience. The waitstaff was friendly, however, the food was poor. We ordered the ribeye, which was 38oz we told, and it was brought out bone and all with the side of skillet mashed potatoes. I wish could write a better review, but the steak was badly over salted along with the mashed potatoes, which were also over-garlicky. We did have a lovely appetizer, but I can't remember what it was, so it mustn't have been great, but only pretty good. We got a 25% pity discount on the steak, although we did have to wait 45 minutes for it to cook. Finally, we were told we had a 2.5 hour wait, but it ended up being about 25 minutes. However, we left for Brooklyn Winery to kill some time and received a text 35 after it was sent due to the poor reception in the area. They let us seat anyway, but they should really improve their wait time estimates. Oh well. Probably won't go back. We'll be sure to put in the reservation at Peter Lugers instead if we're back in the area. read more

My boyfriend took me here for a nice date night, and I had a wonderful time. As practically everyone else has noted, there is almost always a long wait time, so be prepared for that. They took our names down around 8 pm and said they'd have a table ready in 3 hours, and that they'd send us a text then. It ended up only being an hour and a half. I ordered a few glasses of the house white wine, which was good. For an appetizer we got the artichoke hearts, which I really enjoyed. As for the main course, we decided to share the butchers steak and saddle London lamp chop (both medium rare), with sides of long beans and panfried mashed potatoes. The steak was very good, but I actually thought the lamb was the best, especially with the mint yogurt it came with. The sides were okay, nothing to write home about considering the prices, but still enjoyable. I was amused at how long the long beans actually were. For dessert our server suggested the toffee cake a la mode. I'm glad we listened to him, because it was one of the best slices of cakes I've ever had - moist on the inside with a perfect crisp on the outside. In fact, all of the server's recommendations were great, and he was very helpful and pleasant throughout the night. We had a lovely experience overall. The service is nice and the ambience is cool but I am sorry to say if you have ever had a half decent steak in your life I find it impossible to imagine you would enjoy this steak. The meat is extremely low quality: dry, tasteless, hard. Did not come cooked in the way I asked, but most importantly, the cut that they serve DOES NOT correspond to the name on the menu. We made a reservation for a group of 3 (one of the group was coming from work a few minutes late). Because of this, we were sat on the long table out in front (which I'd avoid on a cold day), and there was an empty seat right next to us. The host told us when our friend came by, he was welcome to sit there. Fast forward 10 minutes later, the same host said it would be impossible for us to add our guest unless we wanted to wait for an hour. We told her it was okay, assuming they were booked out. However, nobody sat on the empty seat, and when our friend came by, the host told him he couldn't even wait for us to finish, and basically kicked him out of the restaurant. Now the food..... We ordered the scallops and the Sirloin Steak, with a bottle of wine. Portions were smaller than expected, and the steak (ordered medium, came out rare). We didn't finish the meal. The waiter gave us a nasty look when we asked for bread.... There are a ton of places nearby with excellent reviews and a lot less pretentious than St. Anselm, which is a shame after seeing all these positive reviews. read more
