I just read all the reviews of the Tavern, and I feel I have the experience to post this. First, Tavern is like a relationship, either you get it or you do not. it is a meeting place for all, be they high or low, Kings or paupers, this place is a nexus. As for some feeling the bartenders at times are a bit rude, hey this aint no corporate gig. Heck, they are routinely rude to me, but I know them, and kinda like it! Is it the best bar ever? No, probably not. Is it the cheapest bar ever? Not necessarily, although their special nights are hard to beat sometimes. Is it a home? For a good portion of St. Augustine's downtown population, yes--yes it is. If those new to St. Augustine want to get a taste of local life, the St. George Tavern should be the first stop. As the only dive right on the St. George strip, this is the watering hole of choice for downtown's workers to stop off after a shift, have a beer or five, and meet up with friends. If you're anyone who's anyone, or you know anyone who's anyone, you will know at least one person in the Tavern on any given evening. And on the odd night you're a stranger, you won't be for long, as the crowded layout literally fills with people on a good night. Drawbacks to the tavern? Sure, there are a few. Mostly they do boil down to the crowds. As the place packs up tighter and tighter, everything becomes a little bit difficult. If you're entering on what looks like a crowded night, assume a few things: -You won't be getting a booth (although fortune often favors those who hover). -Maneuvering from one end of the Tavern to the other, which takes thirty seconds on a clear evening, could take anywhere from two to ten minutes, depending on how often you want to stop and chat, and how willing you are to muscle people aside. -Because smoking is permitted inside, oxygen can become a rare commodity, especially when every booth has two or three people lighting up. Beware of eye-stinging. But the crowd is one of the points of the Tavern that you learn to love. The oldest tavern in town or so they claim. Walk through the doors and greeted by a waft of smoke. So this place serves food sometime throughout the day. Florida law is if a place allows smoking they can only have a certain percentage of food sales. Ugh, I don't know. There was no food for sale when we were there and there was tons of smoking. Including the bartender. I get the smoking patrons. It is what it is. But there is no way in crazy that I would ever allow a bartender to smoke behind the bar. HUGE health code issue in my mind. You are smoking and have nicotine on your hands and are touching my bottle/glass and making my drinks. That is pretty much just gross. We were one and done. It may be a local hang out. It may be the oldest bar in town. It may be cheap mixed drinks and huge over pours as noted in other reviews but it just isn't worth it to me. Patrons seemed nice enough. Bartender was friendly but not overly so. Bathrooms were clean. It is an ok place to go if you don't mind smelling like an ashtray when you leave. C-. Oh, how I love a good dive. While vacationing in St. Augustine for the holidays, the first task of our first night was to find a decent bar. Walked into this place and within a few seconds felt immediately at home. A few things to consider, however. This place is COZY. My friends and I ended up here every night of our vacation and it was packed to the brim, loud and smokey. For the company I was with they didn't dig it too much, but I was pretty chill about it. Good luck finding any type of seating, much less a place to stand near the bar. If you're patient enough you'll be able to score a booth. What a great little spot that's the epitome of a dive bar. Slated the "oldest bar in St. Augustine," it's got a been here forever and we ain't changing vibe to it. You're allowed to smoke inside, so it's extremely smoky, but you get used to it as the (cheap) beer keeps flowing. I stopped in here for what was supposed to be one or two beers with my boyfriend and his mom and we ended up squatting in our booth for hours. We had an incredible time! Packed with wall to wall people on a Friday night it contained a mixed crowd. Some dudes were hogging the jukebox all evening and playing a combination of ganster rap, booty music and some Jimi Hendrix?!?! Our waitress Heather was the rudest, inconsiderate, irritable, ill mannered, Service provider I have ever come across in my whole life. And I've been in the service industry. We've been in this place a few times and we don't come for the amazing service but never had such an issue! This instance stood apart. She never said thank you, she was obviously irritated when we asked any questions about their menu, and had the audacity to talk ill of our questions to another customer-probably a regular, right in front of me. The coke in my drink was flat the first couple go arounds but eventually they switched the soda gun they were using and it was better. I understand as a bartender you chat up with your regulars, it's how you make your money. However as a bartender you should at least acknowledge someone at your bar. "Hey, I'll be right with you", "I'm busy but I'll be right there", "Hey what do you want", something. I stood at the bar for nearly 15 minutes and was ignored while the bartender was discussing with someone what she was going to do the following evening. She saw me, I was in her line of sight, I even tried to wave her down and still be respectful. Never once acknowledged me at all. I'll admit that the "oldest Tavern in America" boast is what drew me to give this place a try. But it's the food that will bring me back. Absolutely the best egg salad sandwich special I have ever, ever had. I chose the rye bread but had the option of a wrap. It was club style with a generous layer of bacon, lettuce and tomatoes in addition to the egg salad. A dill pickle and a bag of savory chips on the side made it complete. When hearing the term "dive bar" this place definitely comes to mind! It's nothing to really look at and no one's ever going to go to this bar because of its "amazing atmosphere", but yet St. George's Tavern has an inexplainable charm about it. The bartenders (for the most part) are the friendliest bunch and the music is just loud enough for you and your party to be able to talk about it. Honestly, the only thing that brings me back to this bar is their 2 for 1 deal that they have Thursday's and Sunday's after 9pm. Buy 2 drinks for the price of one ($4). On top of that, 95% of your vodka cranberry is vodka! Probably the most prosperous $4 ever spent at a bar! Since my favorite local sports bar decided to replace the sports with a terrible DJ, I had to venture out to find a new drinking establishment in St. Augustine. There are plenty of great spots to drink in town, and it usually depends on my mood as to where I'd like to go, and since I was in the mood for cheap beer and good tunes, St. George Tavern was the destination. This place has been around for a WHILE, and although it's on St. George Street, which many locals refuse to visit, it has a great local vibe to it. I had a great time here, as did everyone else My big positives- cheap beer and great bartenders, who really took care of everyone in the place. Lots of big screen TV's were playing a lot of different sporting events, although the volume was turned off in favor of a jukebox- awesome choice. Don't know who it was, but someone was playing some great tunes. Even though I don't smoke, I respect the fact that this place lets you smoke inside- I believe that should be a stable in good drinking establishments, people should be able to relax and enjoy themselves. My big negatives- not much space in here, especially on a busy night. Only a few tables and a few barstools are available, and the walkway to get to the restrooms / jukebox / video games is not very wide. Be prepared to have to push people out of the way to get anywhere, and be prepared to be pushed, because if you can't get a seat, there's not a lot of standing room available either. Overall- had a great time in the Tavern. Lots of locals enjoying themselves, cheap beer, great drinks, good music, and good folks. If you are on vacation and want to have a horrible experience, go to St. George Tavern. A group of girlfriends and I stopped in for lunch, and were treated more like a nuisance than tourists just wanting to get out of the sun and have a beer and a bite. First of all, there was one bartender working, and she paid way more attention to her "regulars" at the bar. We were there for probably two hours (not by choice), and were "checked on" maybe four times, including taking our orders and delivering what we had ordered. We often had to go to the bar to get anything. Three of us ordered the Philly chicken, which was little more than dry bread, drier chicken, burnt veggies, and a tiny amount of cheese. Another girl ordered grilled chicken, it was totally raw on the inside. They did take the chicken back and fix it, but only after my friend stood at the bar for five minutes being ignored. The dingy atmosphere would be forgivable and perhaps "quaint" had the food been decent, had the bartender been competent, and had the beer been cheap. Overall, it was just a good reason to sit and chat with my friends for a couple of hours, trying to ignore being treated like an inconvenience by an establishment we were trying to bring business to. Walked in, guy smoking in first seat, guy eating cheeseburger in the next ...gross. 50 something year old Bartender with short blonde hair is the rudest person I've met on my vacation to Saint Augustine. My boyfriend and I are late 30's and I had my ID but he didn't and she embarrassed us in front of the entire bar. Not only was she extremely rude, she told us we should know better and that no one in all of Saint Augustine will serve us. Well guess what lady, you wouldn't have a job if it wasn't for people like us so you should think twice before opening your big mouth and being nasty to people. Mostly a locals crowd it seems, as many people were calling each other by name including the bartender who was very friendly. They do have a limited food menu, smoking is permitted and I do not think they have any TVs if you are looking to catch a game. Always stop here for a few beers and chill (during the early afternoon hours). We escape here for a couple rounds to get away from the tourists and it works. Usually locals and they always have a game on. Yuenglings are like 3$ or something cheap. The blonde bartender is a nice lady but take-no-shit woman lol it can get smokey at times.
