I know that this is a family run establishment, so writing this feels bad, but I feel obliged to leave an honest and factual review. My A/C stopped working in my 8 year old Mercedes. I called St.Helena Auto to book a diagnostic for later that week. They had Friday 10am open. I dropped the car off at 10am and was told it should be 2 hrs or so. I waited until 1pm, then called them to check on progress. They said they were starting to work on it now. After waiting in several coffee shops all day, I walked back to the shop around 3, they were just finishing my car. They said they had refilled the refrigerant to see if there was a big leak (there wasn't) and had diagnosed the compressor's electronic components were bad. The tech said they'd send estimate for work by end of day, or maybe early the next week. I was billed ~330 dollars. The next week I didn't see an email go by, work was busy, and I figured I'd give them time to complete writing up the estimate. The following Tuesday (so 11 days after I brought the car in) I called in to ask if they could re-send the estimate, since I had never received it. They told me that since I'd driven my car off the lot since the estimate had been done, I needed to come in for a second diagnostic + estimate. I emphasized I still didn't have a copy of the first estimate of work. They insisted that since it had been 30 days since my diagnostic (it had not, it had been 11 days) I needed to come in for a second diagnostic. They also said they did have a copy of the initial estimate, and would email me it. They never did. Overall, I am sad that I wasted all of our time bringing my car into this shop. Perhaps they are super busy and forgot to writeup the results from the initial diagnostic, but trying to charge me for a second one is not what I expected. read more

I had my 60,000 mile service done here recently - they are SO honest and clear about everything they are doing. It was way more affordable than the Honda dealer who made mistakes twice with no apology because it's just a job to them. St Helena Auto folks have been here 40 years and live in the community. You can definitely feel comfortable bringing your car here! I have to add that I'm wondering if the recent 1 star Reviewers got the shop name wrong - or maybe they work for a competitor! St Helena Auto does NOT ask you to pay cash, but they prefer check to cc because they avoid the cc fee, which LOTS of small businesses do. They do NOT ghost you. And they do NOT charge 4 times other shops. In fact, I had to insist that they charge me to put in the air filters that came in after the bill was tallied - but they still wouldn't charge me for that - I'm not the only reviewer who has experienced their kindness. read more

This is a long time family owned and operated local business. They are super friendly, fast, honest and fair. I have gotten my smog check for years but I never realized they did so much work on cars, so I will now take my Honda CRV there instead of driving to Kastner in Napa where the dealership costs are ridiculous. We drove in with an emergency problem. Jacob could not have been more professional and friendly. He immediately diagnosed the problem, fixed it, and suggested a solution to prevent it from happening again. Took no money, as we were coming back for the final solution. Final repair was more than fairly priced. Again, Jacob was super nice, efficient, and communicative. He made us very comfortable and took great care of our car. They take advantage of you if you don't know anything about cars. They first charged $170 for an enguine diagnostic test, and then wanted to charge me $800 that other shops quoted $200. They wanted me to pay $300 for the part when other shops charged $50 max. Highly recommend driving a little further and go somewhere else they don't charge you an arm and leg. read more

He recently repaired/performed maintenance on two of our vehicles, including staying late in order to make sure he ordered the right part so that he could have it as quickly as possible for me. My 2000 Maxima broke down this past vacation weekend. The local AAA towing outlet made a call at 3:30pm on a Friday and they stayed to check it out. He was very sure it was the starter gone bad. I trusted him and they got it finished by 5pm and though a dent to the wallet, he fixed my car and it's been running great. Excellent knowledge of all cars and a drive for doing it "the right way" I brought in my 1957 Porsche Speedster and Victor wasn't afraid at all to work on it. He adjusted the brakes and clutch cable and corrected things my previous mechanic actually did incorrectly. This is the type of service you want because they just care about doing the right thing and not charging you an arm and a leg for work that's not really needed. I went to St. Helena Auto Repair the weekend of Thanksgiving, requesting an oil change for my 2014 Acura. **I would not go here** A shady employee changed my oil and made me pay cash - told me he couldn't provide receipt. Also had a minor working for him (kid said he was 15 years old, while older man said he was 18) who didn't know what he was doing. Watching him put the skid plate back on, it was lopsided and he didn't even realize how it slid in. Now, 4 months later I was driving on the interstate, and my engine started smoking, my "oil low" light came on, and I had virtually no oil in the car. I looked underneath and there was oil pouring out. I took it to Acura dealership, and they showed me the shoddy job -- oil filter was on ajar, and leaking, with oil all over the underneath and back of my car. It cost me $180 to have it fixed and cleaned. I left a Google review, and someone from the shop contacted me saying he would talk to owner and get back to me, but I never heard back. It's obvious that my review is not consistent with many other reviews for this company, but I would absolutely not go to this place again, and advise all to avoid it as well. read more

Jacob and the team here seriously helped us out in a huge bind.. one of our cars broke down on my wife while she was in St. Helena area for work and was traveling with a film crew 70 miles from Sacramento. We needed major repairs and on top of that, we were leaving out of town for four days. St. Helena got the repairs done, timely and with top notch quality. The arranged for us to pick up the vehicle after hours since we were picking it up after their normal business hours. I have yet to find this level of service in Sacramento. I will seriously consider driving out to St. Helena for any future repairs due to the service they provided for us in time of need... Since the father retired the son took over and he thinks hes a know it all. He charged me 196. to replace 2 pieces that cost a few dollars each. Only worked on it for about 40 mins. Way to much. Got down south and its still didn't work. Been stuck down here because of covid but got someone else to look at it because it was very hot down here. They fixed it and its worked ever since. He also fixed what Little Victor fixed said it the piece wasn't good. The part he fixed discharge pipe has been leaking for along time. Very easy to see. He showed me with a flashlight. He even gave me the part to show these guys where it was leaking. I really think they should give me my money back for that last job he did because it wasn't done right. This review is long overdue. Back in January I was in a pinch and the guys at St. Helena Auto Repair were amazing! I called them to see if I could bring my parents car by (a jaguar that they never use) since it was making an odd sound and they checked everything on the spot and made me feel so much more comfortable about driving it back down to Marin with my baby in the car. The noise had me so worried, but they settled me down and assured me that all would be fine. Thank you, Ricardo and your team - you guys are amazing! The starter relay on her VW had an issue -- a very cheap, and easy to repair part, but unfortunately, they're hard to come by in St. Helena! Anyway, they ordered the part express, and while they could have completely gouged the heck out of an unsuspecting non-technical car driver (my fianceé), they got her all taken care of, with 30 minutes of labor. They are our life saver! One very nice Saturday, my LA friends came and we were 6 of us in the car. We were planning to wine hop, all of a sudden, my husband hit a curb, and bam! Weird sounds happening at the back. My husband decided to take the van to the nearest auto shop. We are in luck, a nice man greeted us. They were closed that time, but he was so awesome he took our van and helped us with our dilemna. He ordered the parts and told us to come back in a few hours. Otherwise we wouldn't make it back to our place. Gladly, my friends are young enough to walk a mile to V. Sattuii.. which is really close to the shop. Amazing service! We were on vacation in Calistoga and heading home when we limped into St. Helena Auto Repair with an almost-dead battery. They checked it out, went and picked up a new battery for us, installed it and 30 minutes later we're back on the road! Charged me 3 hours of labor plus an inspection fee ( simple 5 minute look/see) to weld two pieces of the muffler assembly. I contend they padded the bill. On a previous occasion they gave me a price for replacing a clutch and then called me later and asked for more money because their employee by mistake ordered a more expensive part. Unfortunately, they're the only auto repair facility in town. Advice: Go elsewhere. Better yet I've given the vehicle to a relative who lives in another community with more repair shops. read more
