I'm giving 4 stars for lunch -- haven't experienced dinner here yet. Had fried pickles that were great for starters. Then we both had the deconstructed chicken salad. It was light and tasty with a strip of bacon and spicy avocado. We will have to come back and try dinner. The place looks much better than it did a few years ago when we had to turn around and walk out due to the previous management. Seems better now. read more

My family and I went to Stagecoach last night to celebrate Mother's Day as well as my grandmother's birthday. My family had not been since the remodel, I had been once before and the service and food were excellent on my previous visit. Last night the food was wonderful, however as another reviewer stated, the restaurant was out of a wide variety of food by the time we arrived for a fairly early dinner at 6:15. (Chicken salad and hush puppies were not available as well as other entrées)Our server was friendly, and thanked us for being patient, but the service was slow. Real slow. We aren't the complaining type and we were enjoying our time together, but I would say we waited close to 15 minutes for our drinks, and longer for the Check. I'm going with four stars because my first visit was fantastic. The ambience is lovely and the food was good both visits. My family agreed last night was likely (hopefully) a fluke and we will return! read more

The tradition of the Stagecoach Inn meals are gone. The atmosphere for a "fine dining" experience was diminished by the huge television over the bar in the dining room. We had the prime rib dinner. The salad was crisp and tasty. Prime rib excellent and perfectly cooked. However the little tea breads served with meal with out butter ? The au jus was unrecognizable. Heard a lot of hype about this establishment, but fell short. The restaurant ambiance is lacking for what should be a Texas historic site. As I have traveled around the world you would be hard pressed to know you were truly in Texas. The food was really the disappointment. Example 1 - Shrimp cocktail was 4 shrimp served with what tasted like salsa for $12. Example 2 - The chef apparently had a problem with cooking a prime rib to medium, the server made this point clear prior to bringing the order out, had to send back due to heavy pink! The prime rib was void of taste, served with ausjues that was more grease than drippings. We were a party of six, and this was my first and last time. I have ate at restaurants like Tenders in Vegas, 57 Fighter Group in Long Island and Ruth Chris in Austin. Having a $719 bottle of wine on the menu just does not go with what I saw and experienced. read more

I read the reviews and was hesitant to try the restaurant. I stayed at The Shady Villa Hotel so figured it was so close I had to try it. I feel the reviews posted were incorrect. I not only ate at the restaurant once but visited it 3 times during my stay. Courteous and friendly staff. The bartenders really know their stuff and made me a perfect martini. The food was excellent. I loved the chicken fried steak and the swiss mushroom hamburger was cooked perfectly. Great job and I plan to visit again. read more

There was a time the Stage Coach Inn was a favorite stop or even a destination for a unique, delicious meal. LONG GONE. I was worried that we might have trouble being seated at lunch. When we arrived the place was vacant. When we got our menus and especially our food, we understood why. We ordered Chicken Fried Steak from the very limited and overpriced menu. Due to my diet I asked for a salad instead of the potatoes. For salad the gave me a finger bowl size of some foo-foo green stuff that more resembled hedge clippings than salad. FIVE DOLLARS ADDITIONAL! Food was small portions, over cooked, overpriced and too salty. Waitress and manager were indifferent. During our visit, no other dinner guests-NO WONDER WE WON'T be back. I have tried this place many times with my parents who live in the area and I just have always felt rubbed the wrong way. Maybe it's because I bring my toddler and now infant with me, and they don't like kids there. Anyway service is always sub-par and the food is only ok. This morning I hit my max for stagecoach and likely will not come back. My mom met me and my boys for lunch but all that was available was their brunch. They have a decent brunch menu that has a couple non-breakfast items but you're mostly stuck with the usual bfast fare. I ordered the avocado toast and added an egg which I ordered over easy. I'm honestly not really sure where the avocado was and the egg was all the way done. I didn't say anything though cause it took so dang long for the food to come out. I split a giant fruit bowl with my son and that was probably the best part. The pancake I ordered for my son was ok and my mom's breakfast plate was a hearty serving of eggs, potatoes, toast, and bacon. The bathroom was dirty and the Sink wouldn't drain and the staff had about as much personality as a plain piece of paper. $30 for 2 burgers! Seriously overpriced, poor service, bland food and tepid side dishes. I ordered the child's cheeseburger and fries. For $8 I received a completely bare burger--no toppings of any kind. There was a single pickle slice on top of the bun as a garnish. The fries were tasty but room temperature when brought to the table. I also ordered "the works" burger ($18!) with green beans instead of fries. The burger patty was the same size as the child's. As for toppings--3 pieces of very overdone bacon, unevenly applied sweet tomato jam, a smidgen of onion, and a fried egg. The avocado was missing. The egg was perfect. The burger patty was hot and cooked properly. The menu says tobacco onions, which I assume was the tiny portion of grilled onions I found towards the center of the burger, buried under very sweet tomato jam. The green beans were served in a cast-iron ramekin, which was warm but not hot to the touch. The green beans themselves were room temperature. They were served on a bed of raw red onions. I tried to convince myself it was supposed to be a cold dish, like a salad, but then why serve it in a warm cast iron ramekin? I didn't bother to ask the server about the dish or to request my missing avocado because god-only knew how long I'd have to wait. The burgers took 40 min to deliver to our table, and she did not come by to check on us during that time. The restaurant was not busy and there were no large parties, so her lack of service had no excuse. read more

My family has gone to the Stagecoach Inn Restaurant for decades. We were excited to experience the updated Stagecoach and glad we went once. However, the only way to justify these prices would be to replicate the original experience or to provide perfection. The Stagecoach Inn did not achieve either. Staff was very good. Most of the food (Salmon, catfish, BBQ fries) was very tasty. However, the atmosphere was more Trendy Austin than original StageCoach. And the hushpuppies are just corn bread cylinders. Nothing original about them at all. At $5 for 7 pieces of cornbread, it was hard to feel good about the value. Finally the fruit salad was poor. Not in season and not worth $10. At a minimum, they should be serving free cornbread, aka hushpuppies, and serving solid salads. We may try again in a few months if reviews show improvements. But there are better ways to spend this much on food once you have been there once for the experience. read more

We really enjoyed our stay here. The room was clean, the bed was comfortable. The shuttle service is really fast and convenient. We ate dinner at the restaurant. My husband enjoyed his meal (Turkey with fixings). We were not so impressed with the salad, Tomato Aspic. The tomato is a blob of gelatin. I ordered the burger. It was okay but the chips it comes with were not good. The dessert was yummy. Our waitress was working hard and really friendly. The inside of the restaurant is super cute. We probably won't eat here again but we would consider staying here again and getting drinks at the bar inside of the restaurant. read more

The historic Stagecoach Inn! The new renovation went really well! The place is beautiful inside and out. Servers seem to all be new and not from Salado. Servers seem to be in quite a hurry as if working a busy restaurant in a downtown metro, not a quaint central Texas village. When asked about old items like the original hush puppies, they seem to get frustrated and preached that the new style is now the best. The new hush puppies were decent but nothing like the previous ones. This I hope will change someday. I had the chicken fried steak. I was not impressed. Where to even start... made reservations for 8 for my moms birthday, which they were aware of. Walked in a few minutes early and they acted oblivious. Proceeded to sit in the 'sun room' and I don't believe their windows have been cleaned in quite sometime. We ordered the hushpuppies and they were mushy and not very pleasant as far as texture goes. After we placed our order The server came back tour our table and told us they were out of the drink my daughter ordered as well as the first two beers my dad ordered. We Also was informed that one of the main entrees wasn't actually available and had been replaced on the menu without the servers knowledge. We had three ordered. I actually ordered two sides instead of a meal. The chicken fried steak had been over fried and in low temperature grease it appeared. The salmon was salty and the veggies had an overwhelming fish taste to them. The mash potatoes were lukewarm and very salty. The cocktail I ordered took absolutely too long considering dinner service literally just started and it wasn't a full restaurant. All of the cocktails looked to be half full. The manager came and did check on us. I explained the discrepancies and he offered free dessert? The server was apologetic, but honestly didn't come to our table but maybe twice. She also added the 18% gratuity to protect herself from the horrible service and food. She proceeded to remove the appetizers because she said 'that's all I could do with my code'. I have been to many restaurants on the pricier side and always expect the service to match the price point. This place was a HUGE disappointment and if it wasn't my mother's birthday, I definitely wouldn't have left without voicing a little more dissatisfaction with the whole experience there. The stagecoach inn and restaurant is an icon on I35. I came here as child. Seeing it's decline over the years was so sad. I was thrilled to see the stagecoach get a remodel. When my husband asked if I wanted to stay here for a quick getaway I jumped at the opportunity! Checking in was a bit confusing. No where safe to park. Once we got checked in we found out the inn is now a "resort". The bell boy had my husband park on the Main Street then loaded our luggage on to a golf cart. He took us to our room which was super far from our truck!!! And with a ten week baby this was extremely inconvenient! The room has been remodeled beautifully. Still even having the smell of fresh paint. Downside no fridge or microwave. Again with a newborn that's just inconvenient. We needed ice and the only ice maker was in the front office, far far far from our room. We forget the baby's bassinet,we had to find the bellboy, load the golf cart... etc it was a beating with the baby. I really don't understand why the owners won't let you park near the rooms. I wanted a coke and the bellboy told us we would have to drive a mile down the road to the grocery store! Ugh. Inconvenient! We probably won't stay here again just bc of all the inconveniences. We ate dinner at the restaurant. The remodel is gorgeous! The food was outstanding! The waitress was enthusiastic. We will definitely be back to eat. read more

I went to check out the brunch and was pleased to see biscuits and gravy on the menu. The moment it came out I knew it was going to be disappointing, especially when looking at the burger my lover ordered. It is my fault thinking this would be a meal to stick to my ribs. I am an endurance athlete and need a lot of calories and this is more a place catering to an older crowd with a lower calorie need. Four small biscuits covered with a flavorful gravy with sausage that was more like hot dogs. Thank god I was able to finish off that burger even if it was a bit salty. Used to enjoy this place, but came here for Sunday lunch like we did just a few weeks ago and was greeted with someone with a bad attitude telling us they only took reservations now, but another worker said they could still (immediately) seat us. Got seated and noticed a new menu and majority of tables empty and asked what the deal was how different it was a few weeks ago & was told they have "new menu, new management, new service" now. Waited over an hour for food and there was no one else there--again, mainly empty tables, so we didn't understand why it was taking so long. One of the orders came out incorrectly as well. Very frustrating, as this is such a quaint place that used to be perfect for Sunday brunch/lunch before the new management and menu! Prices also went up--definitely not worth it anymore read more

After driving in from Austin, we decided to try out the newly renovated stagecoach inn. The remodel is still under construction but it's coming together nicely. The room is nice and they shower is great. A couple things could be addressed. There's no microwave or fridge in the room. No vending machines on property so if you want a soda, drive a half mile or stop at the store on your way in. The food is great and the restaurant in nice. Just be prepared to not have the luxuries of a motel 6 in your room Keith at the front desk was great. Carried 3 bags up to our room. There's absolutely no parking at the rooms though. You have to park on Main Street and golf cart ride to your room. Pretty inconvenient when we have our baby and had to walk a quarter mile back and forth to the truck. read more

The food from the buffet was cold, the turkey was pitiful and there was not a roll in sight. We treated 4 adults at $55.00 per person and paid an automatic 20% gratuity. Keep Driving and Do Not Stop! After learning that the Stagecoach Inn was reopening and turning a new chapter in their historical history - I was excited to check out the place for breakfast last week. Was I disappointed and wish I had keep driving to Waco - to check out another new place. The service was lacking in everyway - she was simple not able to handle two tables both of which were finished. How can you not make perfect eggs, grits and biscuits? The eggs were simple ok! The grits were the worst that I had ever had in my life - they were not southern they were not northern they were leftover reheated and tasted like oatmeal. Can we not serve simple two biscuits - that did not happen either - flat and burned. The Décor - appear to be copied from a design magazine. The host - a chatting gentlemen that loved to talk but did not make the experience great. Two things to remember as the cost of menu options keeps getting higher and higher you are seeing the trend going on for very simple limited menus with very few options. That only works when those limited options are the best in the town or region -- this is simple not the case with the new Stagecoach Inn. Please go back to the drawing board ! read more

Reservations for 12:30 for Mother's Day Brunch. So excited to check out the newly renovated restaurant. They called to confirm several days before, sent text the morning of to confirm. Seated promptly upon arrival. I will only comment on the food from this point on. It was extremely disappointing. All hot food items were at best luke warm but most were just down right cold. Biscuits looked old and cold the scrambled eggs were just fridged. The sausage was burned went twice for bacon and it was out both times. The salad bowl was empty along with a few other items. Mashed potatoes, aka instant were sticky and thick like paste . The "attended" table with someone slicing ham... not a nice spiral sliced type ham, pressed ham.... REALLY! Chopped pressed ham! the food was just awful. Drinks were also serve yourself. For the price they could have at least brought you the drinks. Way over priced for cold/instant processed food. read more

We have always enjoyed Stagecoach Inn when it was in its traditional form and also after it was renovated. The past couple of times we've given the restaurant benefit of the doubt. It is a special occasion these days when we choose to don our face mask and go to a sit down restaurant. The tables felt cold, crowded and at times social distancing seemed hard to maintain. The menu is nice but poorly executed. The chicken was dry and bland in the chicken and waffles. The fish and chips was very sparse for the price of almost $20. The trout was very small as well, smelled dangerously fishy, very dry and overcooked. The shrimp in the cocktail tasted off and was slightly slimey. Service was excellent but sadly overall no longer worth a drive from Austin to visit. read more

Honestly, if I could give this place 0 stars, I would. For over $80 a night, this place NEEDS to do some improvements. I would even hesitate to stay at this place if they were only charging $40 a night. First thing we noticed about our room was that it SMELLED TERRIBLE. Combine the smell of old people, cigarette smoke, mold, and feces and then double it; that is how bad this room reeked. The hotel was really full this weekend, which is I'm assuming the reason we were put in a handicapped room. This wasn't necessarily a problem, but the room itself was weird. Everything needed to be updated, most of the appliances didn't work or didn't work well. And on top of not getting any cell service in the building, the internet was down the ENTIRE WEEKEND. And the phone will only call local numbers so my husband and I were forced to make trips outside to even sent texts to those we needed to coordinate with. The bathroom was just gross, moldy, and funky. There was lots of black mold on the shower curtain. The shower had 2 settings: non resistant water pressure (not even enough to wash soap off my face) to such INTENSE water pressure it honestly felt like it was slicing my skin. The "conditioning shampoo" they provided was absolutely disgusting and the towels had been laundered into crisp dry and bleach stained oblivion. Staff was unfriendly and unhelpful. They did nothing for any of our complaints and the only restaurant they were willing to recommend within walking distance was the shitty cafe on the property. If we hadn't been in town for a wedding and every other hotel booked, I would have left after the first night. It was such a terrible experience you would not be able to pay me enough to stay there again. read more

A large group from my workplace had a special luncheon here to honor some people leaving the organization, and needless to say, the whole thing turned into an amusing cluster-f. First of all, our admin had booked a private room ahead of time and collected everyone's orders to try to help the restaurant out. Turns out, the hostess accidentally gave our room to a walk-in party that just so happened to also have 30 people. Ok, everyone makes mistakes. But I get the impression this sort of faux pas happens more often than not. Why she didn't think to ask the walk-in party if they made a reservation, I don't know. Maybe they lied to her. Needless to say, the service went downhill from there. The wait staff was not prepared for two such large parties at once, and they were obviously frazzled. I ate a lot of those complimentary hush puppies because it took a long time to get all the orders straight. They also interrupted my boss in the middle of a speech. The food is hit or miss. My salmon salad was only so-so. The fish was a little overcooked, and they forgot the dressing for my salad. When the dressing came, it tasted like cheap, store-bought Italian dressing. My coworker sitting next to me ordered the catfish, and she gave me some since the portions are so huge. I really liked the catfish. This is the type of place where you shouldn't bother to get the healthy option -- just go for something fried and greasy. If you have a dietary restriction, just forget about this place entirely. One coworker with a serious gluten intolerance had to send her salad back twice. Overall, I would say this place is running on quaint charm and former glory. If you're vacationing in Salado anyway, it's a cute place for dinner. Just expect mediocre service. read more

Historic Salado is a place where you step back in time. I've been coming to Stagecoach Inn for many years. Its was one of my grandmothers favorite places to stop on our way to Austin when I was little. It NEVER changes. If you love antiques, great hospitality, horse drawn carriages and Artsy little shops, you'll love Salado! The Inn is pretty special. The waitresses recite the menu at your table. I swear there are the same waitresses there I've seen all my life. The meals are all inclusive. Start w/ chicken broth, hot water cornbread sticks & butter( never enough of those!), green salad or shrimp cocktail, pop in your mouth mini hot muffins / rolls....mmmm. Then, you select your entree and dessert. The "strawberry kiss" dessert is yummola! If you're there for lunch, they serve a banana fritter that is soooooo good! The Stagecoach Inn Hotel is nothing fancy.....it's very relaxing and clean. I've never stayed at the town homes @Mill Creek Golf Club but, friends say they're nice. We just like staying @ Stagecoach Inn...right in the middle of the town and right on the Salado River. That's where everything is happening. There is a little outdoor theater there, also. At the Inn, there's a little diner / cafe, where we like to eat breakfast. Just don't be in a hurry.......Salado folks aren't. That's why they are so happy living there! There's a FUN Scottish Festival there, also......can't remember what month. If you have some time and don't want to RUSH, Salado & the Stagecoach Inn is worth it! Be sure to call & make a reservation! We love to dine in the back dinning room area that overlooks the trees and Inn, with all the windows! read more

I have stayed here a couple of times and just love the Historic town of Salado with all of its antique stores. Whenever I stay here I feel like I have gone back in time to the early 1900's. I believe the Stagecoach dates back to the 1800's and there is a story about the Registry being stolen because it contained a list of famous guests. We have stayed in the Townhouse rooms located next to the Mill Creek Golf Club. They include a separate bedroom with a sofa bed and mini kitchen. Our stays here have always been memorable with great service. The dinning room is just what you would expect in a historic Inn - lots of wood and excellent service. All meals include sides dessert iced tea and coffee The things I remember most are a delicious cod seared in butter with just salt and pepper (it melted in my mouth like butter) rich creamy potatoes and Delicious rolls. This is a great weekend getaway for a relaxing weekend. read more
