You can have a steak or chicken or whatever. You get one side. Do you want a veg or a starch? You get one or pay extra. I had tomato soup and an app of chicken meatballs. Soup was barely warm. Meatballs were supposed to come w bread which I had to ask for. There was nothing special about them. Went to the restroom after- one had no toilet paper. Another one the door wouldn't close. We were told by the waitress they were busy but it was pretty empty. My son comes to Solado often. Told him I would not go back to this restaurant- he agreed. read more

DISGUSTING! absolutely the worst food around! the entire restaurant is horrible! The minute you enter the foyer you don't know where to turn. no hostess greeting --a big wall blocking the view , when you see the bar with overhead tv you think bar food but once seating you get served garbage. my daughter and I were hoping for the traditional hush puppies but they were dripping in grease. we got these cheap xerox copie print out paper menus because they can't afford real ones and we ordered the chicken fried steak which was akin to prison food. I cut into it took one bite and was done. once we paid our $60 bill and left I asked her if she wanted to go get a cheeseburger. go anywhere else! read more

First I heard that it was beautifully decorated well .. not my idea .. the decor is that of a modern wine bar and doesn't resemble anything that you would imagine for a "historical stagecoach inn" Second I expected the food to be amazing especially given the price tag of the very limited selections. We ordered chicken fried steak and the chicken fried steak was good however the gravy tasted like a runny butter roux .. Grilled cheese. $12 nothing grilled about it. Thin on basic oat nut bread and the cheese was not melted. Fries greasy.. Turkey club. Turkey was dried out and tasted like it sat in a refrigerator for a week. And the amount of turkey was disappointing had I been able to eat it .. I sent it back.. Our ticket was split our other party had the grilled cheese and ckn fried steak $48 - Service was great! The team at the Stagecoach Inn Restaurant did a fantastic job hosting our family's luncheon after my father's funeral service. They were extremely accommodating of our party in one of the historical rooms. It was set up on time, well decorated, and ready for us when we came in. The food was excellent, from Chicken Fried Steak to Salads and even the Hamburgers. The traditional hushpuppies they brought out as an appetizer were great. Their wait staff was great, ensuring our glasses were always full and our orders were accurate. The desserts were great, from the Apple Dumpling to the Key Lime Cheesecake. Their online system made it easy to coordinate and plan our event. Their staff were caring and accommodating of our needs. I recommend hosting an event at the Stagecoach Restaurant or just stopping in for a meal. We've celebrated much family history at the oldest restaurant in Texas. We are so glad that this historical restaurant is open for Texans to enjoy. read more

Dining at the StageCoach Inn Restaurant is like going to a family members home. They seem to have captured the ability to make that place feel warm and inviting! You will be warmly greeted You will receive service from from an enthusiastic server You will be able to tell that they love the food I always get a kick of the southern charm of this place. Its a landmark with a ton of charm. The food is always wonderful, normally I get the ribeye but this time around I got the catfish. It did not disappoint. I ordered the hush puppies with the consommé followed with a salad and tomato aspic Next course was the catfish, green beans then is served with cornbread and banana fritter. I ended my meal with a peach cobbler that was server it a small cast iron pan. I really enjoyed my meal and everyone cleared their plate! For years our family has come to Stagecoach. We moved and had not been since the renovations. This year my husband and I decided to visit for our 30th anniversary and have dinner at the restaurant as we have for many of our early anniversaries. I was disappointed to see less than stellar reviews for our beloved spot. We contemplated going elsewhere- but decided that due to the many wonderful experiences previously, we owed it to them to try it FOR OURSELVES vs pivoting due to a few negative reviews. SO GLAD WE DID!! We found the restaurant to be lovely, still giving respect to the history but also beautifully updated. We had early dinner reservations in time for happy hour. We were greeted, seated and served in a timely manner. We ordered drinks and hush puppies. While the round hush puppies were hot and delicious, they were a bit pricey--esp when always before, the cold water hush puppy sticks were better and were served complimentary. Seems like, since there is no bread served with the meal, they should still be complimentary. We opted to sub the mashed potatoes with stuffed baked potatoes. The chicken fry was very good and the onion gravy was tasty. Green beans were fresh and hot. While we didn't think it was quite up to the par of the "old" standard, we felt it was still a nice dinner. The best part for us was the "hallelujah" that came when we found that the Strawberry Kiss was still as yummy with that crunchy baked meringue shell that melts in your mouth and the strawberry sauce on ice cream. We almost did not give this place a chance because of the reviews. We actually walked into Chupracabra but walked out when several servers made eye contact and just left us standing there. So we walked across the street to the Stagecoach. We are so glad we did. Bar drinks were great, the appetizers were delicious. The chocolate pecan pie was great and the strawberry kiss was not bad. (I was not a fan of the hardened meringue. ) The pork was a little peppery but delicious. Just wish it had some kind of sauce to go with it. We will definitely be back. read more

Our valentine's day getaway to the newly renovated Stagecoach Inn was just what we needed. For Austinites, it's only a 45-min drive up the road, which feels like getting out of town even though you're not going far at all. I had never been to the original inn or restaurant, so I can't speak to what it used to be, but I can say the restoration of this historic property seems to be just lovely. There is a genuine warmth and old-fashioned charm to the place without being fusty or cutesy. One could tell there was care put into everything from patio furniture selection to paint color. We had a king room, and it was cozy and stylish. The fabrics and decor were simple, yet well coordinated. We really appreciated thoughtful details like Noah Marion soap and Red Flower bath products. Also, strong shower pressure! Hallelujah! The custom robes were adorable, and we would have purchased one if it hadn't cost more than the price of the room. ;) Which brings me to another point -- cost. The Stagecoach Inn is a steal. Maybe it's because of the new ownership and trying to build up clientele, but for the cost of a stay at the Hampton Inn you get a much more unique experience. We could hear I-35 from our room, but funnily enough, it made for white noise that was similar to the machine we use at home. We slept incredibly well. The restaurant's updated menu still nods at the past and everything we tried was really, really good. I had a great New York Sour cocktail. The Texas Fried Bacon was hands-down our favorite item. I even liked the tomato aspic, a Grandma-food if ever there was one. Service was wonderful, and so fast it surprised us. Check-in is a little odd -- a standalone building a few yards past the restaurant. And not having someone on-site 24 hrs is kind of a drag when you use up all your coffee the night before and have to wait for the morning crew to bring some by. But we didn't mind the "car free" grounds at all. You can opt for a golf cart to your room if you wish, but we skipped it as everything is very close and walkable and we had few bags. I had visited Salado before, and thought it was cute enough, even if there wasn't a whole lot to do for folks who aren't into shabby chic and bric-a-brac. The Stagecoach Inn and a trip to the Ro Shaw Clay Studio and Barrow Brewing Co. made me reevaluate -- it's looking like Salado is recovering from the long years of I-35 construction with style. read more

I wish somehow the restaurant could be separated from the inn on FB for the purpose of reviews as they are apparently clumped together (it is impossible to find just the restaurant on Yelp) and the negative reviews on the restaurant are dragging down I think the the reviews on the inn. I have stayed at the inn prolly four, maybe five times, over the past forty some years. Very fond memories of the fantastic setting with the pool (and wasn't there also a large outdoor stone lined heated spa?) there on the grounds in the center of the buildings. As we pass it frequently going to and from the wonderful weirdness that is Austin we lamented it's closure and in recent years have celebrated the news of its restoration and proposed re-opening. This past spring we stopped by on our way back to Fort Worth to check it out after it's recent re-opening and this past weekend we spent three nights. The reception and check-in lobby has been moved from the west side along the freeway access road to the east side on Main Street. The office is nowhere near as quaint, appealing, and attractive as the original, but how much time do you spend there? With the restoration and remodel you no longer drive onto the grounds to park and go to your room. You park in the lot by the office and are taken with your luggage by golf cart to your building. It actually works better than one expects it to. When we wanted to drive somewhere we walked to and from the lot where the car is parked. And when you think about it, this is really not much more walking than one would do in a large hotel. And the walk is quite pleasant. Where you're ready to head for home just call for a golf cart and it appears to carry you and your stuff to the car. Somehow they stay on top of this in a very timely manner. The rooms consist of whatever bed arrangement, a small desk, a long counter in the ante-room to bathroom and a comfortably sized bathroom. The shower is large and comfortable and the modern sink has areas on both sides to put stuff. The counter in the ante-room is large enough to serve as our cocktail bar and travel coffee station (electric water heater, Melita drip coffee carafe, coffee grinder, etc) As is more often than not the case in almost all hotels and similar accommodations there are no comfy chairs (here no chairs at all) to sit in to read at night with a cocktail or in the morning with coffee. Not a prob for us as we have learned to travel with two ex-boat deck folding aluminum and canvass chairs with broad arm rests that we can sit comfortably in for hours. Good to go. But the pool! And the landscaping! Holy Moses! They have knocked it out of the park!! The pool is large and beautiful and the tropical landscaping will knock your socks off. You think you're in the Caribbean or Costa Rica or some tropical resort. It is spectacular. There is also a poolside concession with a bar and grill. The service is excellent. We received prompt responses to every request or issue like connecting to the internet or the TV needing resetting. Very impressive. We see this becoming a frequent get away long weekend destination. read more

I had a lovely lunch here at the Stagecoach Inn Restaurant on a recent Sunday. The atmosphere is really charming. There are many dining rooms, which helps to provide a cozy feel and with separate ares to seat diners, no area is too loud. We were seated in the center section with views of the trees behind the restaurant. Our server was very knowledgeable and enhanced our experience with his help and suggestions. After ordering the 1861 hushpuppies with whipped honey butter (don't miss these!) I debated whether I wanted to get the salmon entree or a salad with salmon added, and he directed me to the salad and even recommended which salad would best pair with grilled salmon. I really appreciated the recommendations they were spot on. I had the field greens salad with the addition of the seared salmon. Check out the attached picture to see the perfect sear on the salmon! Greens were fresh, just the right amount of dressed, and the salmon was a star. Stagecoach Inn was a great place to have a Sunday Brunch. With new management & being opened two years now, the property is beautiful. I don't want to make this long as I don't want to lose your interest. I will sum this weekend up for you; Anthony worked the pool Friday and rocked it. Drinks served poolside, atmosphere and rooms were exquisite! My husband and I have eaten at the Stagecoach many times over the years. Both of us "hands down" LOVE the restaurant after the renovation. Before the renovation, the food was sub par at best...and that is being kind! To be fair, we have only ever had brunch or lunch and have never had dinner here-only because we live so close by and never stay. Everything we have tried on the new menu for brunch and lunch has always been really good - burgers, french fries, benedicts, fried green tomatoes, the salads, the reuben, and even the stagecoach breakfast...all great! As have been the cocktails. I do wish they'd bring back the marvelous old fashioned with mescal and tequila they made not too many years ago (before COVID), though - hey, a girl can hope! Unfortunately, all of Salado is under construction at this time. The parking at the hotel was less than desirable. You have to park in one parking lot and walk to your room or be taken by a golf cart. This is a bit annoying but I understand there's not a lot of parking anywhere in Salado. The hotel is very nice but the rooms are small, in my opinion and having to listen to the guests upstairs every move made me wonder if there is any insulation between the floors. The decor looks old. Circa 1950's and that is quite clever! My ONLY huge, yet easy to resolve complaint is that there is only ONE mirror in the room!!! You know the "dressing" area doesn't even have a mirror! We stayed with two other couples and they also said this was their main complaint! Seems small until you try putting on makeup or drying your hair with a makeup mirror! This place was marvelous. So pretty and quaint. My boyfriend and I stayed over recently for the wedding of a friends son. I dont know why I haven't been before! I understand things have really improved since under new ownership which I think occurred in 2014 but dont quote me. They are still making renovations. Our room was almost perfect with a balcony overlooking the pool a super comfortable bed and a great shower. The only thing missing was a mini fridge. I can make due with no microwave but a fridge would have sure been nice. Saw one review complaining about not being able to park directly outside your room but it's not like it's much of a walk. Didn't bother us at all. The wedding reception was held at the event center and went off without a hitch. Or at least no hitch that was obvious to me. The food was prepared by the inn's restaurant and was good. The potatoes rocked! The morning we were leaving we didnt want to take the time to dine in the restaurant so placed an order to go. It was delicious. I had biscuits with gravy and my guy had the pulled pork eggs Benedict. I can only imagine how good it would have been had we actually dined in. My husband and his brothers have fond memories of this place from childhood, so we had our annual Brothers and Their Wives get-together lunch here. Not a great choice. We were not happy to find that the menu posted online was not the offering when we arrived. They were serving a brunch menu only - on a Saturday. We're used to Sunday brunch, but Saturday? The hostess did not understand my question about gluten-free. How do restaurants not 'get' that people are allergic and properly prep their staff? The waitress got our order for food, beverages throughout the meal, and dessert incorrect or forgotten a total of five times. The Pulled Pork Benedict came served on top of coleslaw. The slaw was cold, which made the entire dish cold. Chilled, gelatinous pork with egg - Yum! Just what no one wants! (We drove thru DQ on the way home to get some food. I was HUNGRY! I don't know what the other person who had cold Benedict did. I know that she didn't eat it.) The other dishes ordered were good and the other four people at the table had enough to eat. After a four year hiatus we were so glad to return to new and updated Hotel and Dining Room. For over 50 plus years over 4 generations of our family has stayed here. Making the reservations was a breeze thanks to the young lady who answered the phone. She was able to get us rooms together over looking the pool. When we arrived we were greeted by Jarred. He had never met us but made us feel like family coming home. He took us and all of our luggage (a ton since we have two kiddos) to our room by golf cart. It was amazing to see the landscaping and details that been put into the hotel. They have kept the old historical trees and buildings while giving the rooms and pool a much needed update. Jarred stocked us with ice and anything else we requested at a moments notice. His attitude and friendliness is something from days of old. The pool has been reshaped. It is also a family friendly pool ranging in depths from 3 1/2' to 4 1/2'. The hot concrete that would burn your feet in the summer is gone. It was replaced by gorgeous green grass, comfortable seating (that doesn't burn your bottom when sitting), lush palm trees and landscaping. The rooms are completely redone! No longer do you worry about catching something from the old bed spreads! The rooms are clean, open and vibrant!!! Clean white linens are on the bed with soft fabric blankets. The bathrooms are gorgeous with mosaic blue and teal tiles. The bathroom amenities smell like a high end spa and the robes are to die for!! Sadly (one of the VERY few disappointing things was that the coffee shop is no longer there.) We made reservations and dined in the Stage Coach Dining room. Wow wow wow!!! It is clean, open and welcoming! They kept the charm but gave it and the food the much needed update that was needed. Our waitress was so helpful and kind. The tomato aspic from the past was still there but now.... actually amazing! When we checked out three days later Michael was great at loading up three rooms of us. All with a smile... carting people back to the receptionist building. We just can't wait to see what phase 2 of the remodel holds for this historic place. It is obvious that the owners, management staff and ALL employees have only the best of intentions and give their ALL for this place. We can't wait to come back next June. My 2nd review, going back with high hopes. I've eaten their over 60 years, and while the renovations of the property are nice, the food at the restaurant is so very disappointing. Presentation and uniqueness is obviously important, but taste and quality is what I'm talking about. I think I posted before about my disappointment of the lack of continuity from the historical inn and fare, but this goes beyond it. I ate there the last two nights and have not had a meal, or even appetizer, I would suggest or have again. Even the old recipes from before have been tweaked and are not the same. One meal was the chicken fried steak that was grizzle and overdone throughout. The waitress took off 25%, but I couldn't eat it as you can see in my pic. I even picked up the meat, pulled it apart and showed her the sinewy connections of the grizzle. The next eve I tried the filet which was ok, but had a strange texture as can be seen in the pic. Then, the mushroom side looked like sperm with the most awful smell that made me nauseous. I could not eat it. I repeatedly try to support and eat there, but I am forever disappointed. I gave it 2 stars for my love of it as a wonderful memory and wanting it to be better. So sad for such a historical place. read more

Alright.. we've been here multiple times, so I'll write a better review next time I hope...BUT THIS TIME... We walked in at 7pm and there was one table and a single server who walked right by us without saying a word. She finished talking to her table and came back to ask us if we had a reservation.. I said no, and asked if we could sit at the "seat by the window, which was our table we love". Now I need to tell you that the table by the window is in a small room, approximately 4 feet from the main dining room, which had 1 table... at 7pm on Monday night. The server informs us the room is closed because the AC was out in there, but the lights were on and again, it was 4 ft from the 10 ft opening to the almost empty dining room. I said "we love that seat and we'd be ok, even if it were a little warm". She then pops up and said "for safety reasons we can't let you sit in there". I retort and say "seriously, we'll be ok". She then pops back "it's for my safety". BROOOOO... what do you even say.. I'm a 51 year old fat a** white dude that works in a 120+degree (on a good day) food truck and is willing to take a little heat for a meal in our favorite seat... BUT THIS 19 YR OLD SERVER FEELS UNSAFE WALKING A FEW FEET IN A ROOM TO HAND US A FEW THINGS OCCASIONALLY??!! I then retort and say "I work on a really hot food truck, it'll be ok." She then says "I did too". I couldn't stop giggling and said "oh you're serious" and said "cool. We're out". I just glad she is ok y'all. Bless her heart. The reviews had me a bit skeptical of this place. I ate here with my grandfather while he was stopping in town for a little bit. The service is a little iffy -- we spent several minutes waiting to be seated when we arrived despite us being the only people in the restaurant. Once we were seated and ordered, it took about 20-25 minutes for our food to arrive at the table (I ordered the chicken fried steak, my grandfather the pork chop). Let me tell you that once we got our food it was obvious why it took that long. Everything was obviously homemade. The onion gravy was incredible, the mashed potatoes were buttered and seasoned to perfection, the green beans cooked to perfection. The chicken fried steak was tender, nice and hot, and full of flavor alongside the gravy (and it was HUGE!). The one complaint we had about the food was that the pork chop was on the salty side but that didn't take away from how tender, juicy, and well seasoned the meat was. For dessert, homemade monkey bread with pecans and vanilla ice cream. Just as good as the main course. When you eat here, bring company who is good to talk to because you will be waiting a bit. However, the food is easily the tastiest food in town, and some of the best food I've had in a while! read more

We enjoyed our lunch. the lady at the front desk didn't seem to recall the charming portraits of the Van Bieber sisters which were previously in the lobby before the renovation. First, if you want to take advantage of the Prix Fixe, be aware you are going to pay the price of whatever entree you choose PLUS $14. My bill came to $32.48 and I drank only water. The restaurant is completely remodeled and is absolutely beautiful. Separated dining areas make for privacy. Each room is well appointed. I choose the Sunroom with an outdoor view, though there isn't much to see. Bar area is classy and would be a great place to meet up for cocktails. The entrees are limited to sandwiches, salads, and fried food. I was disappointed that the only "plate" items on the lunch were Chicken Fried Steak and Deep Fried Catfish. I opted for the Chicken Fried Steak which is way over battered. Yes, the batter is crispy, but there is too much of it and too little steak. Plus neither the batter nor the steak appeared to have any seasoning. The cream gravy is excellent with a hint of thyme. Accompanying mashed potatoes were to die for with plenty of butter whipped just right. Unfortunately the green beans were undercooked. As to the Prix Fixe items, I loved the Hushpuppies with whipped honey butter and Chicken Consomme served as an appetizer. For my first course, I chose Tomato Aspic which came with a side of spring greens topped with marinated onions and celery along with black olives in a Caesar-like dressing. Excellent! My dessert was the Stagecoach Strawberry Kiss - a baked meringue with fresh strawberries and a strawberry compote. Good flavor but the meringue was tough and soggy. I'd love to see this place thrive. While I appreciate sticking to a historic menu, there needs to be a better selection of entrée plates. Maybe to include a grilled fish, shrimp, or some sort of chicken and pasta dish. read more

Visited for the first time since their recent renovation. The re-do is very nice. Decor is tasteful yet honors the heritage of the place and maintains its atmosphere. I ordered their burger, with the "the works" added. Fried egg, avocado, grilled onions, etc. It was delicious, but too tall to bite, so I took out the egg and had it as a side dish. The fries were crispy, just like I asked. My wife had the eggs Benedict and said they were the best she had ever had, and that's saying a lot. Service was nice. Offered a selection of tables, we chose wisely. Our server was good, not stellar, but certainly didn't detract from our meal. The food came quickly and was piping hot. There were several bathrooms, all catering to any sex. Very clean and well stocked. All in all a very pleasant experience and I recommend it. read more

Even with the new upgrades. Still doesn't meet the expectations of the hype. I would love to see this place really deliver as the competitors in Salado are so much better. Prices are "hotel" prices so locals might not opt to eat here. If you're going to charge "hotel" prices you'd better deliver the best make me come back food! Better than it was a year or so ago, but still a long way to go to make Stagecoach a must go for locals! read more

We really enjoyed this restaurant. The service was excellent. The food portions were plentiful and very tasty. The prices were very reasonable, not as high as I was expecting. The only thing that needed improvement is the air conditioner, the room was too warm. By the end of dinner we had to escape. I'd go back and request a different side of the restaurant. read more

YAYY the Stagecoach Inn is back open after an amazing renovation! Wow this place has taken on a whole new atmosphere - the last time I was here it was very 1970s. In 2018 the dining room is light, breezy, modern, cozy, and elegant with hints of the rustic atmosphere and history from a place that had been serving travelers since the 1860s. It's the little touches here that make the place - 200 year old pine floors from a derelict church in Indiana, rescued and repurposed here as dining tables. The art, the old 19th and early 20th century photographs of the Inn's owners - all of these carefully-curated pieces add up to a unique atmosphere that is romantic and charming without screaming "hey, were historic over here!!!!!" And then there's the food: It's ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS and perfectly executed by a professional kitchen that knows what it's doing. Breads are baked by an artisan bakery in town, and everything is impeccably fresh and beautifully presented. We enjoyed the 1860s hushpuppies as our appetizer, which came with a cinnamon honey compound butter that I am stealing for my pancakes. Poblano corn chowder was delicious - creamy and crunchy with lots of roasted corn. So warning on a cold winter day. The SCI burger comes on a brioche bun with white cheddar and a delicious housemade tomato-red onion jam. DELICIOUS!! The SCI Club sandwich was big enough for 2, and came with a side of housemade potato chips. We will definitely come back to the Stagecoach Inn!! 5 historic stars read more

Decided to take a day trip today to Salado, TX and visit The Stagecoach Inn. Salado is a small community primarily made up of small antique and craft shops. One of the reasons we chose Stagecoach was because my wife remembered going there as a child. The first thing we noticed when we walked into the restaurant was that we were the only people there that were under 50 years of age. My wife also mentioned that the decor has not changed since she was last there about 15 years ago. We sat down and the waitress was very friendly, she told us the menu for the day and we chose the chicken fried steak and fried catfish. The meals came with a shrimp cocktail, side salad, side of vegetables, twice baked potato and a dessert for about $19. Overall the food was not bad. Both of our main dishes we very good but the side dishes left something to be desired. I also felt like the price was much too high for an OK meal. It was great to bring back the memories for my wife but I don't think we will return. read more
