Where to begin? We'd been to the Stagecoach before and loved it--but that was a couple of years ago. First off: the place oozes charm--You would be hard pressed to find a place more drenched in New England ambiance than this 240-year-old former stagecoach depot. Rough-hewn beams; a real fire in a real fireplace; and a wait staff featuring a man with a curled mustache who held one arm behind his back at all times--it's not a restaurant, it's a time machine. There were four of us and we were excited when we scored a prime location in the back of the restaurant, a cozy booth with a small lamp on the table. We chatted for five minutes before our waitress came but that, unfortunately, turned out to be some of the best moments of the night. To save time and space I will simply list the things that went wrong that night. 1. The $10 glasses of Pinot were meager and were from bottles that were certainly not opened that day. 2. The service in general was inattentive and maddening. For example, the bread came at the 50-minute mark and only after multiple requests. 3. It took forever for the food to arrive. Seated at 7:00, the entrees arrived at 8:10 4. The entrees when they did finally arrive, were barely above room temp. 5. A glass of water was spilled over the entire table by a server. (Funny on a good night--but not tonight) 6. The portions were small, but that was a mixed blessing as the chicken was rubbery and the vegetables tired and soaked in oil, and, as I mentioned before, I had to send it back because it was cold. 7. The bill was $170 before tip. 8. And, the hilarious one: the pen fell apart in my hand when signing the check. I realize I sound like a crank but I'm not. I'm really not that fussy: I'm just a guy who resents spending almost $200 for a terrible experience. read more

We were a hungry family of four en route from NYC to the hilltowns, taking a different route through unknown territory due to a visit with friends. I knew my kids (age 4 and infant) wouldn't make it to Great Barrington without a meltdown. Upon first entering this place I was like "uh oh, my kids will not be welcome here." Dead wrong. Not only were the hosts and waitstaff friendly, they went out of their way to entertain. We were digging the oldy-timey tavern decor, "just like a pirate ship!" My kid even got something from the treasure chest (a.k.a. lost and found?) As for the food, it was quite good. We had the fish & chips, scallops, and steak entrees. All were delicious and the only thing I can possibly grumble about is the bill, which is more than we'd have liked to pay (entrees run in the 20's). While we probably would have preferred the cost of dinner at a pizzeria in GB, this was a nice treat and I'd definitely recommend stopping in if you happen to be passing by. read more

According to Wikipedia, a 'stagecoach' made regular trips between stages or stations, which were places of rest provided for stagecoach travelers. The business of running stagecoaches was referred to as journeying. With that basic definition, you get a sense of two of the main appeals of the Stagecoach Tavern: rest and journeying. Let's begin with the concept of rest: The rest one will find is the rest from over-wrought menus found in other restaurants, as each menu item is familiar but with a wee twist to it. Now, don't get nervous, I'm not talking about the twist of foam or molecular gastronomy, but rather an appropriate twist that brings a meal of edible interest and comfort. Having eaten at the Stagecoach numerous times, I've never been disappointed (or as proof in the pudding, I've never been resentful of having to pay at the end of the meal.) The withdrawal of a payment vehicle from my wallet has always been easy when measured against the satisfying fullness in my belly. As for the journeying, well, as soon as one enters into the Stagecoach, one is brought back in time to a place of candlelight and highwaymen, and who amongst us doesn't look better bathed in candlelight? (That fact alone should put Stagecoach on your list.) Their was a change in chefs awhile back, and that made for a transition period, but having just gone to Stagecoach again, it seems as if the transition has been made and made well. Definitely call for reservations. One never knows when there will be no room at the inn, and who wants to be left out in the cold? So, be smart and call ahead when the need for rest and comfort are on your journey. read more

Very disappointing to receive food (especially fried food and mashed potatoes) which had obviously been premade, or sitting for a very long time in kitchen. No apologies from the kitchen. read more

We liked the Stagecoach and it is convenient to where my in-laws live (which was the true benefit of the place. Part of the building is quite old but well maintained. Our table was a little rickity but not too bad. Our pork belly appetizers were outstanding and I had the pick of the litter with my main course of rainbow trout which was light, flavorful and perfectly cooked. Everyone else enjoyed their food but nothing jumped out at them. The desserts were OK at best. My pumpkin cheesecake was too much pumpkin, too little cheese. The drinks were excellent and they have a good winelist as well. I would definitely go back to watch a game and sit at the bar, but would probably venture out to some new locations for dinner. read more

Such a memorable meal. First of all you are seated in your own private dining space. The setting and music were perfect for a family dinner or date. Everyone loved their meal but the highlights were the ceviche, the lobster risotto and the fish and chips. I want the ceviche recipe because I'm still thinking about it. Highly recommend. My wife and I ate dinner here two nights in a row. We were staying at the Lodge so it was convenient but the food, service, and drinks were outstanding both nights! The old rustic tavern was warm and toasty on these cold winters nights. A fire was going and we were very comfortable. Over the two meals we enjoyed the crispy fish tacos, fried chicken, and salmon. All were quite good. The bartender knows his stuff and mixed some awesome drinks! My wife was coming down with a cold and she chose the hot toddy special! So cozy and welcoming, perfect for date night, ladies night, or dining on your own. Candles, wildflowers, and wooden tables make this place feel like home. The food is fresh and seasonal from the appetizers to the desserts and beautifully presented. I felt that I could indulge and eat healthfully at the same time! I highly recommend this place. This place is the bomb. The atmosphere can't be matched in south county. Old wooden beams, candlelight, a roaring fireplace, creaky, crooked wooden floors and a rambling building filled with antiques and charm. A great bar with a great bartender. The new chef is a gem (let's hear it for professional women chefs). We LOVE the vegetarian entree. I am used to a vegetarian plate consisting of side dishes from other entrees. That is not the case here---the Buddha bowl is a creative wonderful mix of lentils, spicy greens, delicious rice, sweet potatoes and roasted nuts; distinctive and delicious. Great burger and salads. The service is upbeat and knowledgeable. Nice to see some young people like us in this place. read more

We have been a few times and overall had a good experience until last night. We had a 7:45 reservation for 9 and it was downhill from there. At 9:15 our firiends who sat down at another table at the same time were finished and we had yet to get any food. We ordered and were told that they were out of the fish. Our waiter then came back and said no chicken. He came back again to say that the salad 3 of us had ordered was finished and we needed to pick something else. We went to the bar 4 x to refill our own water bottles. We were brought 8 pieces of bread and when we realized that and one child was left with nothing they didn't bring us more. It was a terrible dinner, terrible service, and we were charged 20% tip for this treatment. Don't take family, don't take out of town guests, and don't take kids. read more

ive never written a review for a restaurant,but truly felt i had to for this place. it was the worst dining experience i've ever had in my life at the stagecoach tavern last night. i dined at the stagecoach about 2 years ago with a girlfriend and we had such a great time- the service was excellent, the food was delicious. i was really excited to bring my boyfriend back here, and finally i did!... we spend the day hiking mt. washington and were SO excited to go eat at a classy cozy place! we were starving! we were seated in the dining room and placed our drink order with the hostess- which was kind of odd, but we didnt think anything of it. she brought our waitress over and she took our drink and and app order once more. the waitress wasnt friendly at all, and kind of gave us the feeling she didn't want to be bothered by customers. but whatever, we thought, as long as we can eat some good food! we waited about 45 minutes for our apps, we thought our server had just forgotten and again, we're like, oh well, we'll just eat the main course and save some money!... another waitress came by and was like are you waiting for your check? and we're like no- we're waiting for appetizers! so she got our waitress to bring them out. we had a salad and butternut squash soup- they were tasty. me and my boyfriend both were out of water and finished our drinks long before anyone even came by to notice. i asked the waitress if i could see the beer list, after she came by and tried to give us someone else's drinks. she had no clue what beers the bar even had, so reluctantly agreed to bring me the list. she never brought it. we were out of water and our waitress didnt seem to want to have anything to do with us. we saw her in another room pretty much walking in circles doing nothing. by the way, she has a chin piercing- so if you have her- ask for someone else!! she's in the wrong line of work. anyways, now it had been about 1 hour and 45 minutes we'd been at the stagecoach and we still hadnt received our entrees. my boyfriend went to the hostess and told her we'd been waiting a long time. the hostess didnt even apologize or seem to hustle or care. we looked around the dining room and noticed none of the other tables had food! it was like a twilight zone episode. i began to feel really uncomfortable and kind of sad that a restaurant could care so little about the customers. me and my mate both agreed we'd lost out appetites at that point because we felt so uncared for. we waited about 5-10 more minutes (now we had been there about 2 hours), and our waitress never came back in the dining room.. so we left some money on the table to cover the drinks and apps and left. walked right out of there- and no one even noticed. it was honestly the most ridiculous saddest dining experience ive ever had. the food is good, im sure, but this place should consider hiring a whole new waitstaff if they want people to come back. just a side note- i am a former waitress, so i have a lot of respect and forgiveness for servers that are busy yet attentive. this was not the case. our server never even came into the dining room- which had about 6 tables. that's not a lot of tables for a good waitress, especially when they're all in the same room. i really can't excuse what happened to us last night. anyways, i would not recommend this restaurant to anyone and we will never go back. read more

My boyfriend and I have eaten here 3 times. Twice last February and once last weekend, each while staying at Race Brook Lodge. The times last year were great. The time this year left us feeling ripped off. We're vegetarian and we got an arugula salad, fries, and the only vegetarian entree- seasonal vegetable plate. The arugula salad was only arugula and a tiny bit of shaved ricotta. The fries were the only good part of the meal. The entree was $18 and was a small mound of shredded vegetables and a couple of cherry tomatoes wilted in a pan and soaked in soy sauce. It was so bad that I almost wonder if the chef has a grudge against vegetarians. This wasn't even as good as $5 moo shu from a takeout place. We live in Brooklyn, home of overpriced everything and we've never paid $18 for a mound of crappy shredded vegetables. Local produce is no excuse, either. We'll probably stay at Race Brook again, but will not be returning to Stagecoach unless the chef or management changes. read more

We had a reservation and a party of six, but service was extremely slow. We waited for 20 minutes at least without being greeted by our server or even getting a drink order taken. Once our server came over, the process picked up a bit, but we all found the food to be extremely over priced and all around mediocre. The portion sizes were extremely small for a $30+ entree. This is a wonderful and creative restaurant, beautiful interior for romance. The cuisine is wonderful, including an ala carte and cool prix fixe menu ( which is created in accord with the lunar cycle). The salmon was cooked exactly as I wished, highly recommend, I dined there several evenings with my husband and was never disappointed as the menu changes slightly-plus I wanted to try everything on it! The service is wonderful and unobtrusive, polite and wonderful. And if you happen to be there on a Thursday night, move downstairs for one of their eclectic music acts, all very different and enjoyable. read more

I'm giving this place four stars for character and coziness. VERY eclectic decor and it lives up to its "tavern" name. One word to sum up both the atmosphere and menu: rustic. The food was good - but for the price not as reliable as I would like it to be. My boyfriend ordered the steak, medium rare, and it was served very rare. I had the fish over creamed spinach--the fish was cooked nicely but wasn't anything special when it comes to flavor (it tasted like good fresh fish though!). The menu works to incorporate local food and farms - items like "pickled local things" were fun and authentic. The service was very friendly but spotty when it came to timing and attentiveness. Despite the negatives--I would definitely recommend checking this place out if you are in the area. You will be glad that you did. read more

Walking into this place it makes you feel like you've travelled through time to a secret speakeasy in the early 1900's. The food and service are excellent as is the wine selection. The restaurant is a part of Race Brook Lodge and would highly recommend it for dinner even if you're not staying there (although I would highly recommend that too!). The décor is shabby-chic - the restaurant's wooden fixtures, and tables adorned with small candles and wild flowers create a cozy, intimate environment. A little dark, but I found it charming. There is a lovely waiting area at the entrance with a couple small round tables where you can enjoy a drink while you wait to be seated (there is also bar seating), but we were seated right away. Stagecoach offers an extensive wine list and the menu includes a variety of healthy, seasonal dishes as well as a classic burger. We ordered a bakes brie for the table and it was delicious; topped with toasted almonds, honey, and dried cranberries, and served with crackers. Divine. A friend and I shared an order of the summer salad and a burger. The summer salad was beautifully plated and super yummy. It had thinly sliced zucchini and squash, which I wouldn't think to include in a salad, but paired deliciously with the greens, fresh mozzarella, pesto, and balsamic dressing. The burger was perfectly cooked and the fries were crunchy. My friend also ordered a seasonal penne pasta dish with veggies--I didn't try it but she said it was delicious. For dessert, I didn't care much for the flourless chocolate cake (I would have liked it more fudgey) but the berry crumble was tasty. This place exudes New England charm. Had dinner last night and it was very tasty. Was a bit odd when we walked in without a reservation, as it took the host about 5 mins to figure out where to seat us. We volunteered to have a drink at the bar to wait for a table to open, but he misunderstood us and said that bar seating was the best option w/out a reservation. When I explained we did not want to eat at the bar, he walked us to a lovely table, and there were 3-5 other options also available. That was a strange unexplainable intro. We shared an acceptable salad, a bruschetta appetizer with butternut squash and coat cheese with a lemon preserve. The first bite was a bit odd, but it grew on me as I ate it, and overall I would say it was pretty good. My husband was not a fan. The burger though, was excellent. Perfectly cooked rare, and not greasy at all. The fries were also delicious and perfectly cooked. They also start the meal with delicious deep fried chick peas which were yummy. Skip the desserts though. The apple crumble was barely baked and very dry. The chocolate molten cake also dry and not much "lava" We will go back, but be prepared. Service is slow! read more

Wish I had found this place sooner! Will be coming back many more times. The food was excellent, fresh, tasty, great menu choices. Met friendly staff as soon as walked in as they were setting up a fire pit for s'mores for guests both staying at the lodge and diners. Then you get inside and the history of the place is outstanding. The unique setting so cozy. Came here with some girlfriends from out of town and absolutely fell in love with the rustic atmosphere of the Stagecoach Tavern! The staff was amazingly nice and helpful and the food was incredible -- we highly recommend the burger and the beef stew. Great little getaway place and make sure you check out the basement area on live music nights. Would definitely come again and recommend to others. read more

The drive there, the ambiance,the food everything was magical. Hands down one of the best chicken dishes I've ever eaten (sorry mom) I loved the decor, and the home away from home vibe, I didn't like where we were seated there were about 20 open tables and the hostess chose to sit us at a microscopic round one right by the door with strange seating. I could immediately tell who owned the place because they were perpetually staring at my boyfriend and I throughout our entire meal and asked us how we were right in the middle of both of our mouths being full... awkward-the wait staff was a little silly/giggly but sweet and sort of attentive but other than that everything was perfect. I feel like if there was a little tweaking this place would KNOCK even the most arrogant food critic off his feet. I want to give them the 5 stars the food and atmosphere deserves but have to dock the star for a few minor (could turn major) mishaps. We just confirmed that tonight this is our "new spot" after I was pining over that delicious chicken and polenta dish I had last night. Maybe next time will be a 10 star rating, could easily turn to a 1 though, keep that in mind. read more

Four of us had dinner at The Stagecoach Tavern 5/27/16. My spouse and I had cheeseburgers with fries (cheese, onions, and bacon.) I asked them to hold the bacon and to put a slice of tomato on top. When our meal arrived I was told they had no tomatoes!! The burger and bun size were disappointing. The burger was about 3" in diameter and the bun was about 5" in diameter. Allegra has done a phenomenal job with the Stagecoach! I don't get there nearly as often as I'd like but when I do, it's a treat. The atmosphere is especially cozy in winter with blazing fires and the old low ceiling and tavern feel. Beautifully rustic restaurant next door to the Race Brook Lodge. A bit out of the way, but absolutely worth the ride out. Wonderful candlelit ambiance. I went here on a Thursday night with my dad. To start we had the Curry Dusted Fried Chick Peas which were delish. We could not stop eating them! My entree was the Acorn Squash Stuffed with Wild Mushroom Risotto. This dish took me to another place! The flavor was so rustic, so divine! My father had the Herb Roasted Chicken Breast with Haricots Verts and Roasted Potatoes. The chicken was very moist and flavorful. My dessert was the Chestnut Creme Brûlée. It was a small portion but it definitely hit the spot. An all around good time. I would've licked my plate if I could've gotten away with it! Even the water was great! My husband said his Manhattan was the best he's ever had. The best meal we had during our trip to the Berkshires (out of several very good ones) was at the Stagecoach Tavern in Sheffield. The place is great -- nice decor, comfortable seating and very friendly and attentive service. And the food was wonderful. There were a couple of us, and we got to taste most of the menu. Everything was delicious. My favorite dishes were the short ribs and the scallops, both as good as anything back home in San Francisco. I even loved the fish tacos, something I never would have ordered on my own. Every dish was tasty, with its own distinct flavors, You could tell that the ingredients were high quality and that a lot of creativity and care went into the preparation. We had the pleasure of enjoying a wonderful meal at the Tavern. My husband had the shortribs, I had the scallops. The shortribs were delicious and tender, and my scallops were cooked to perfection! Our friends who ate with us were equally pleased with their selections, the salmon(done to her instructions) and the steak was done exactly as asked. The plates are all served with lots of fresh vegetables, cooked just right.Our waitress was knowledgeable and friendly.
