After many years of enjoying Stag's Leap wine, we finally booked the cave tour when we visiting the Napa area recently. I highly suggest this tour, it's truly incredible to see the caves, learn the history of Stag's Leap and it's founder, learn about the area, and ultimately enjoy some of their best wines! Mark, our wine educator was incredible and very informative. We enjoyed everything he had to tell us, and you can tell he's enthusiastic about wine. He did such a great job, that we ended up joining as members. The grounds and caves are beautiful! I am in the wine business and go through Napa often on my way to Healdsburg. This time around I visited Stag's Leap Wine Cellars where I had not been in many years and had the best experience. Not only were the wines phenomenal (as they always are) but the experience was top notch as well. Even though they are selling $200+ bottles of wine (don't worry you can find less expensive ones there too - I recommend Artemis which is around $75) it was not stuffy at all. The overall vibe was laid back and they let the wines do the talking. Josian (Jo Jo) was an awesome host. He was fun, knowledgeable and dedicated. Not pushy at all... The Fay Vineyard is always my favorite but of course the Cask 23 is stunning as always. JUDGEMENT OF PARIS continues! Appointments are recommended but not necessary. read more

I want to especially give a special shout out and thank you to wine host Victor who went out of his way to be incredibly kind to me and my Dad. This was not on our list of reservations today and we got lucky and got a walk-in seating. We really didn't want to try any more wine but I really wanted my dad to try some of their famous Artemis Cabernet so we could buy a bottle if he liked it. Not only did Victor accommodate our request but he also had us try a taste of their incredible Cask 23 (at $325 out of our price range...but someday for a rainy day for sure) Thank you Victor for showing us a wonderful experience at Stags Leap Wine Cellars and I look forward to doing a proper tasting in the future. Historically important? Yes for sure. Luxury experience? Not so much. If there is a tourist trap in Napa, it's Stag's Leap Wine Cellars. Yeah the 1976 Paris Judgment is cool, but it's been forever since that, and granted, their wines are still pretty good, but have the premium priced in from that fame. Reviewing the Celestial Tasting -- you start out in the Lobby, which is really loud and cramped. Tours usually have 3-5 parties at once, and combined with the fact that there's a general cafe / bar area right next to the lobby, it's a conundrum of noise, and you can barely hear what's going on in the beginning of the tour. The next stop are the caves, which is way more quiet, but there's not much to see. Also, the tour guide is not very informative. There is some information about the barrel makers, and about the layout of the tunnel, but the wine making process is not described very deeply, and the caves themselves are pretty monotonous...it's just the same set of barrels over and over again. Which, to be fair, is how most wine cellars are going to look like, but the tour could have been made more interesting by visiting perhaps more interesting parts, or seeing the fermentation as well as the barrels etc. Final stop is the tasting room, which is sectioned off from the caves, next to the fermentation area I believe (no intro about fermentation). There is a chef's counter, and you get 4 bites to go along with 4 wines. You get a Chardonnay, and then the FAY, S.L.V, and Cask 23. The wines themselves are good, but the pours are quite stingy. Also unfortunately for my visit, the glasses had residue detergent in the glasses, and all the wines were spoiled. We had to get everything replaced, which props to the staff for organizing, but we felt that the staff could have been more careful about serving the wines, especially wines of such high quality. Overall, if you're gonna shell out $125 a person to go on the Celestial tour for 5 people, it might be more worth it to just buy yourself a bottle of FAY, S.L.V. and Cask 23 for your group, sit on a green patch of grass in a vineyard, and sip on your beautiful wines instead of taking a visit to this estate. read more

A little bit confusing because there is another winery called Stags' Leap (notice placement of apostrophe) about 1 mile away and they are NOT at all affiliated. This one definitely has the superior service and wine! I tasted many delicious cabs that are going to age beautifully. Since I feel like I'm investing in my future taste buds, the price tag doesn't sting quite as much. The Artemis, Fay and SLV all made it into my cart and into my cellar and they are labeled so I don't accidentally drink them when I'm drunk ... or drink them with a bunch of drunks. Also grabbed a couple of the Sauvignon blancs to enjoy this summer, but it's only February and I don't think they will last the month. read more

The wine here is pretty good, but a couple of negatives caught my attention.... We drove into Napa on the morning of our tasting. Got here about 30 minutes before our 11am tasting appointment . Being our first time on the property, we checked in and walked into their store area to check things out. A few in our group went to use the restrooms and others were just looking around. An employee subtly ushered us out to a back door and suggested we could wait there instead of looking around? During our wine tasting, there was no food or snacks offered to help cleanse the palate. If they feel their wine is worth the $75 tasting fees, that's fine. But not being able to offer any kind of cracker or cheese platters (even if it's for purchase) sort of hinders the overall experience. The last negative I noticed was that I was charged for more than I expected... on my paper, I marked a quantity of 3 bottles. I made a note for another bottle we tasted, but I didn't put a quantity amount on that line. Turns out the guy gave and charged me for that bottle. Since it wasn't overly expensive compared to some of their other bottles, I let it go since it was a decent wine and someone in our group was a member so I got a discount on my purchase. But what was sneaky was that I got charged gratuity on my order when we already gave the guy a cash tip. So he double-dipped his gratuity on my order! Unfortunately, I wasn't offered to review an itemized list before I signed off. All he gave me was the keypad to sign. read more

The tasting room is absolutely stunning with its modern architecture and giant windows, allowing the natural lighting to come in. The wine tasting was about $75, and we felt like it was worth it because we got an extensive history lesson on Napa and the vineyard. Stags' Leap is unique in that it won the Paris of Judgement and the volcanic soil vs non volcanic soil wine. With all of the wineries in Napa, we were happy that we chose Stags' Leap for our wine tasting. The service here is extremely personal and they were more than happy to take our pictures next to the vineyard. I highly recommend a visit if it's your first time in Napa! read more

Amazing experience. My wife and I came up from SF to celebrate her birthday. Stag's Leap was the 1st place on our list and our first time trying. It's been forrrrrrrever since we came to Napa Valley, certainly way before the shut-down. Beautiful tasting room with tons of information about the history, including a bottle that won the Judgement of Paris on display. Upon checking in, you're given your glasses of Sauv Blanc and then your education host takes over. Justin was our host for our time slot and he was FANTASTIC! [Justin, I hope management is reading this *cough cough*] Justin provided a thorough knowledge-base of the property and its history. Since this was mid-week and maybe because a little slow post-holidays, we were able to squeeze in a brief walk of the caves and a great discussion on all things barrels. Bundle up, the caves are amazing but much colder. Once we were back, we sat for our "Estate" Tasting. We tried an array of wines from the Estate Menu. Justin being the master wine bard, provided all the info we needed and was able to answer all of our questions. This is not a stuffy tasting, we had a blast and Justin is a fantastic host. The views of the property while tasting are great. This is must-stop for wine tasting, just be sure to make an appointment. We took some bottles home with us and will be back to enjoy some more. Cons: Can I really think of any no. I would only wish that the stemware reflected the quality of the wine. Time and time again we have come by for a tasting and have been blow away by the wines offered. The upgraded tasting area seats far more than the older barrel room. 3/20/21 Thank you to our friends Emma and Eric for inviting us! In regards to flavor and quality, this was my best wine tasting of red wines, ever. Immensely pleasurable. I believe (correct me if I'm wrong please) that this is The Winery that put America on the world map of wine. Yes, This one. It all began with their 1st place entry in the Judgement of Paris, even being honored with a 2006 Congressional Resolution honoring the significance! Hell, even a bottle of the winning S.L.V. Cabernet Sauvignon was placed in the Smithsonian in 1996! Also note: they will make sure you know the above. Over and over. And again. But every time the staff tries to tell you just go ahead and say, hey, I already read that on Yelp but thank you very much. Cool. Now let's talk that extraordinary wine!... 1. Estate Collection Tasting Flight $50: Since we were guests, the tasting was free. A step above others, before we sat down the table was already prepped with settings, and all the glasses poured for us! So, we had... 1a. 2017 Arcadia Vineyard Chardonnay $65: The sommelier (does that apply outside restaurants?--I dunno, but for the purposes of this review let's just call our host that) went into detail about the history of this place first, see "Also note" above, then went to even more detail about what went into this chardonnay, and their goal of supporting flavor with oak, but not calling attention to the oak like one would like to not notice salt, but still feel it. I think they've achieved what they aimed to do, but overall it wasn't as exciting as some chards that my gf loves most. 7/10 1b. 2017 FAY Cabernet Sauvignon $150: The tasting notes were spot on, noting, "aromas of ripe berries, figs, plums, candied cherries, strawberry preserves, and a touch of a jasmine perfume,... and cherry pie aftertaste." I will add to that, that this wine was a fruit bomb, event with a very slightly tartness reminiscent of citrus and probably any other fruit your mind might just conjure. I REALLY wanted to buy this but... 10/10 1c. 2017 S.L.V. Cabernet Sauvignon $195: ...but... well we ain't rich so I can't justify spending $350 on 2 bottles, so we got this one instead. Alas, it wasn't my favorite, but you know... the Smithsonian right?--I gotta get one for my cellar and pop it open in a decade or two. Same thing here--the notes were spot on saying, "dark chocolate, graphite, truffle, dried fig and a lovely touch of violet... with a dusty cocoa powder note." This certainly had a darker character than the FAY version, and personally I think even a less complex character. With much less fruit layered in I think this would be a more classically "good" cab, bold and all, but I did enjoy the FAY one better. 9/10 1d. 2017 CASK 23 Cabernet Sauvignon $305: Well, I don't got an AP on my wrist (yet), so I guess I just don't got a rich enough taste yet... but our table unanimously rated this wine the worst on the table. I don't remember how the sommelier justified the $$$ price tag, but I don't think it reflects the lack of complexity in flavor, or the relatively bad, bitter and short finish. Though I'm sure their notes are spot on again ("a rich berry medley with silky layered aromas of dates, cocoa spice, cassis, black olive, and pomegranate") you have to pay far more attention to find the subdued character. Anyway, an easy pass. 5/10 Lastly, which was actually firstly, when we got here we actually stood in the greeting room for at least 15min and not a single person helped us while we stood there. A pretty respectable winery. I've been meaning to come here for quite sometime, and it's almost been two years since I've come to Napa! Yup, that's what having a kid will do. Staff were very attentive and the wine tasty was pretty good overall. I could have gone for a "healthier" pouring sample, but still pretty good overall. This place is a bit on the pricier side and you can find their bottles at Total Wine for cheaper prices, so there is that. Still, I enjoyed it. They don't offer food here, so if you're hungry, eat before you come. The grounds are nice and overall, it was a pretty good experience, but not the best winery in the area. read more

How have I never visited Stag's Leap Wine Cellars before??? Well now I have so let's get started... if you don't know, the most important thing I learned on my visit is the ' before the s is always best ;) Don't get confused with Stags' Leap. I visited after running past here during the Napa Marathon (don't worry I finished, then drove back the next day ;) and on suggestion from another tasting room. I've ordered Stag's Leap while out to dinner a time or two and have always thought highly of them and their reputation. I've learned a lot about myself and my taste the past few years and it seems I really appreciate a grape that hasn't been handed everything it needs to thrive, producing big plump thin skin yet one that has had to work its ass off per se to really thrive (I guess I see a lot of myself in the taste of wine I prefer including drought years, different strokes for different folks am I right?) that being said I favored the 2015 S.L.V Cab to the 2015 Fay and the 2015 Cask is delish! They are all great really, and it's probably the Artemis I've ordered off of the menu during dinner which I've never had a complaint about. Their tasting room is lovely and I'd definitely suggest visiting, I feel like here and Chateau Montelana are must for first timers due to their history alone. read more

Customers visit wineries and expect the wine tasting to be more for the experience. You guys definitely need to provide broad vintage. Providing all three 2019 glasses of wine was absolutely disappointing especially when all 3 were not the best I have tasted.  Secondly, the staff who assisted us throughout the session were rude and made racist jokes. We all felt uncomfortable and uneasy. You guys should definitely work on training your staff on keeping it professional. We are there to relax and enjoy, not to hear racist jokes, and hear the staff curse in front of us.  Overall, it was an absolutely disappointing experience, and I won't be recommending to my family and friends. read more

Breathtaking experience, exceptional... beyond are expectations. We visited Stag's Leap in September 2020 and booked a tasting which was offered as a picnic style by there pond in the back of the property. Gorgeous!!! The views where incredible and the set up was simple yet elegant and intimate. Each tasting was paired with its own tapa, which included an assortment of cheeses, hams, and nuts with different jams. Thoroughly enjoyed our tasting tour at Stag's Leap. We had a friendly, enthusiastic tour guide who provided information about each wine as they were poured. Wines included Cabernet, Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay. It was a beautiful warm day so we were fortunate enough to sit on the outdoor patio for our tasting. There are quite a few tables available on the patio and only a handful of other groups having tastings so it was nice. After our initial tasting and education session, our guide walked us into the wine caves. Just before getting inside we were allowed to taste some red grapes that had just been harvested. I cannot even explain how sweet and delicious those grapes were. I could sit there and eat them all day. In the wine cave we saw the many wine barrels, gorgeous private dining/wine tasting area, and a really cool pendulum swinging. We enjoyed the tour, the grounds, and the wines at Stag's Leap and I would recommend it to wine tasters in Napa Valley. read more

With Stag's Leap, I generally drink the Artemis Cabernet Sauvignon, but this trip, we treated ourselves. We tried the Estate Collection Tasting Flight! Our Pourer provided us with a table that included an incredible view of the rocky promontory of the Stages Leap Palisades (see picture). She was fantastic ...... knowledgeable, helpful, and congenial. Our wines included two of my most favorites (neither of which I drink on a regular basis considering economics) - a Fay Cabernet Sauvignon (2017) and a Fay Hillside Cab (2015). SLV (fire!), Fay (water!), and Cask 23 (perfect blend!). I was surprised at how much I even enjoyed their white wine selections. I'm used to their reds being the top choice that I failed to pick up on their awesome-white-wines. Restroom. Yes. Odd. But yes. As you dine, when you have a chance, go use the restroom. You'll pass by quite the "back stage" where they barrel and temperature store the wines. Not to mention...the restroom itself is well maintained and clean. hahaha. COVID-19 means that all dining is outside and limited. So if you are lucky enough to book seats to enjoy this experience, then do it! Hands down a top-notch experience for experienced and novices alike. We joined the cave and wine tasting experience on a Saturday morning and was treated to an informative and fun backstage tour and then a relaxing wine tasting experience in the main area. Liz was such a joy as a hostess to our time there. She's knowledgeable, patient, and shared many fun stories about the area and the wines. We really loved asking questions about the vineyard, the different types of wine and also requested for some recommendations in the area. She was more than happy to help and we did end up following her recommendations! Waking into Stag's leap is impressive, the history is well presented. The taste of the wine is superb. Our wine host was an idiot. The grey haired, glasses wearing host we had started out nice. But as the tasting went on, and he began to push the "membership", his attitude changed. One person in our party showed interest in becoming a member, so the host brought over a sign up card. My friend, filled out the card using his title as "Dr" as he should, because he is. Once our wine host saw that he was a Doctor, He began kissing his ass so much that he completely forgot that there was 5 other people at the table. Our host started bringing out wines that were for "members only", pouring the Doctor big pours and pouring the rest of us what he called "teeny tiny splashes". Our host disgustingly gushed over the Doctor, saying "Dr, would YOU like some more wine? Dr would YOU like some water, Dr is there anything else I can do for YOU." My wife and I were here for our 20th anniversary. We came here because of the history, and we were excited to taste the wine here. I was the one who suggested this winery. My wife and I were ready to sign up, become members and take a few bottles home with us. Credit card was out, filled out the card, circled the bottles we wanted. The other couple we were with did the same. We were all ready to sign up. But our host never came back to ask anybody if they were interested. Walked passed us a few times, never asking us anything after he found out a Doctor was at our table. Our host missed out on 2 more memberships, and the purchase of at least 6 more bottles of wine. After tasting wines at many wineries, I realize that the wine host has a lot to do with your overall experience. If the wine host is friendly, knowledgeable, and of good service, the wine will taste that much better. Unfortunately, the taste of Stag's Leap wines will now remind me of the host that ignored us, and made us feel as if this wine was not for us. read more

We joined our friends on a guided tour of the enchanting Stag's Leap Wine Cellars . It was a beautiful drizzling day that inspired jaw dropping views of the vineyards and caves. My husband booked me a surprise trip To Napa with the first stop being here, my favorite wine it did not disappoint. We were greeted with a glass of Chardonnay (I know, not what you think of when you think stags leap) while waiting for our tour to begin. The tour was about 20mins and took us through the very elegant wine cave. After the tour we ended in the tasting room where a tasting was all set up as we looked over the vineyards. We had such an absolute breathtaking experience at Stag's Leap, it will definitely be a winery experience I will never forget. The views are extraordinary, overlooking the mountains and vineyards. All of the staff was so welcoming and friendly, and made the experience so much better. Jojo was so personable and had us laughing the entire time. Every wine we tasted was so marvelous, and yummy. Little did I know, the thoughtfulness of the staff and services provided to us this day were beyond what I can even explain. My now Fiancé had been communicating with the manager, Danielle, for a few weeks at Stag's Leap to set up and pull off the perfect proposal. We were able to go down to the little lake on Stag's Leap property where my fiancé proposed, and then when arriving back to the tasting seat there was a customized tasting menu congratulating us on our engagement. Just when I thought it couldn't get any more special Danielle brought us a bottle of Heart of Fay and a sharpie that was then signed by everyone to remember the special day. We just returned from Napa and visited 13 vineyards during our 3 full days there (2 were full tours). We sampled several top-rated wines in this charming tasting room and strolled outside to take in the view of their vineyard. The region gets its name from a popular local legend that tells of a stag eluding hunters by leaping to freedom across the district's landmark peaks. The "valley within the valley" is home to some of Napa's most famous vineyards. Enclosed by the Stags Leap Palisades to the east, and rolling hills and the Napa River to the west, Stags Leap District is occasionally described as the "valley within the valley." I didn't get a chance to do the cellers, just the tasting room, but I've heard that if you have time to do the whole tour, it's a knock-out. View of the Fay Vineyard and best view of Stag's Leap. There are literally hundreds of wineries in the Valley, and Stag's Leap needs to be near the top of any list for visitors.
