Everything is on display so you can see what you're getting without entering inside. They seem well known for their bread which I did not get but I ended up getting the chocolate chip cookie, chocolate rye cookie, and raspberry galette. The cookies are a bit soft for my liking. Varied selection of breads and boules, muffins and pastries, all looking delicious behind the safety glass. I got an apricot galette (thick sweetcrust pastry with a pocket of jam, more crust than fruit and more jammed than fresh as expected from the name but yum anyway), and a blueberry buckle (like a perfectly moist muffin with proper fruit under a crunchy streusel ish lid) - not too sweet, great as dessert breakfast or actual dessert dessert. I came in at 4pm and was sad to find out that they ran out of all of their savory pastries, including the pizza bread. Apparently they stop selling the pizza at 2pm. I'm not a big fan of sweets or plain bread loaves without eating it as a sandwich with savory toppings, but since I was only in Portland for a day and had heard great things about the place, I got a chocolate chip cookie for the road. The cookie was on the slightly sweeter side for me, but it might be just right for those with a sweet tooth. I loved that the cookie wasn't completely soft or completely crispy and was just the right amount of chewy in the middle but crunchy and firm on the sides. The chocolate to dough ratio was also very excellent. I'm glad I tried it but am looking forward to returning when I can try their other offerings! read more

Just like I found Two Fat Cats, I found Standard Baking Co. from another PBS show, A Few Good Bakeries. I am so easily influenced! Since we arrived in Portland earlier than expected we decided to explore it during the quiet morning hours before it got too crowded. So as we are walking down the waterfront, we found ourselves passing by Standard so had to pop in for their morning buns to enjoy the next morning. They have a limited lot that is shared with the hotel next door that you can use while at Standard with a person monitoring when you leave so you do not overstay your welcome. There are also a couple of picnic tables outside to enjoy your baked goods and a doggie water dish that I unexpectedly found when I practically stepped into it trying to take a pic of the sign. Outstanding bakery that can match the hype. Parking kinda bites and you can easily miss this place, so just make your way to the Hilton Garden Inn and find the place next door. I liked the financier, with the sun-shaped cake moist and scattered chocolate bits inside. The lemon tart was fantastic, with the right amount of smooth lemon custard that wasn't too tart. The plain croissant was legit and could match any place I've been to in New England. The vanilla madeleine was pretty nice, though probably weaker than the other three. The morning glory bun, while liked by many, was just okay. Maybe I've been brainwashed by Joanne Chang/Flour into thinking her version of a breakfast bun is the only way. Overall the prices of everything were pretty decent and reasonable. Service was terrific, as the young lady was patient and helpful. If you don't want pancakes/eggs/toast/bacon for breakfast and want pastry, this is a fantastic location. read more

Had to try this place after all the hype and I can't say I was that blown away. Pretty tiny bakery and it was very busy when I went in. It would be helpful to have signs posted high up so you had time to figure out what to get. Instead I had to wait when I was up next and in front to see what was available and then feel rushed due to the line. I got a cranberry scone and a small Asiago loaf of bread. I also got one of the pre packaged bags of cookies. The bread was delicious, the scone did not have much flavor. And after trying the cookies later, I was surprised at how hard they were. In recent years, Portland has had a dirth of new and superb bakeries open. Then there are the places which have long been a staple.....for damn good reason. Standard lives up to the bame and bar they have set themselves. Pastries are always flaky and flavour packed. The breads have perfect crunch (best baguettes hands down) and distinct crumb textures and flavors. They offer beverages as well. The lines have always been an issue and you have to be willing to wait. That said, you get what you pay for and waiting for this place is time well spent. (Just be sure to PLAN for the time!) The new policies that the world's implosion has brought about mean 2 customers at one time and no more (unless kids) so if pals tag along, they wait their turn or stay outside. Well , I mean its a pastry shop . The pastries are not fantastic , they are not out of this world . They are decent thats all. But I will say that they are not bad just very common nothing special at all . They make you wear a mask still (like really) its stupid but it's a private business and it's their choice . They are kinda rude inside as they make you line up , make you stand in line for no reason outside when the store is empty. I arrived at 8:30 AM and they was a line. Waited about 25 minutes on the line. The cashier was super friendly and nice. I asked her about the sourdoughs and also asked around how long they would keep. We considered coming by tomorrow to get the sourdough so I told her I would order online and she gave me the option to make the order for tomorrow for pickup right away, which was super convenient. We ordered a morning bun, a raspberry gallete, 2 fruit buckles, and the Olive and Onion Foccacia for today and got the Mishe and an almond crossaint for tomorrow. We had the morning bun with our coffee and it was delicious. It was sweet and very light on the cinnamon. The fruit buckles were like filled muffins and somewhat crumbly and the raspberry gallete was also yummy. The Olive and Onion Foccacia was also tasty with our Lobster that we had later that day. The next day, the pickup was very easy. I just went up to the counter and gave my name. We ate the almond crossaint right away and it was nice and flaky with a lot of sliced almonds. On our most recent trip to Portland, we stopped in TWICE. First stop, later in the day, we picked up a small snack of Blackberry Galette. These small 4-5 bite galettes were complete heaven.
